## About

The SS Jeremiah O'Brien was built in 56 days in June 1943 at the New England
Shipbuilding Corporation in South Portland, Maine — one of 2,710 Liberty
ships mass-produced during WWII to carry troops and cargo across the
Atlantic and Pacific. She made seven wartime voyages, including eleven
crossings of the English Channel supporting the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
After 33 years in the mothball fleet, volunteers restored her in 1979. In
1994 she sailed back to Normandy for the 50th anniversary of D-Day, reviewed
by Queen Elizabeth II and visited by the President of the United States. She
is the only unaltered Liberty ship left in existence, certified by the U.S.
Coast Guard and American Bureau of Shipping, and crewed largely by
volunteers.
