# MOSIP
> MOSIP (Modular Open Source Identity Platform) is a not-for-profit digital public good that offers countries modular, open-source technology to build and own their national foundational identity systems. It was established in 2018 at the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-Bangalore).
Key facts:
- The MOSIP platform code is owned and maintained by IIIT-Bangalore on behalf of MOSIP and licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. The platform, its extensions and professional services are offered to country partners free of cost.
- The architecture has over 20 independent building blocks (pre-registration, registration, registration processor, ID repository, authentication, partner management and more), so countries can build from scratch (Greenfield model) or extend existing systems (Brownfield model).
- Principles: modular, open source, vendor-neutral, secure, human-centric and inclusive. Countries keep full ownership and choose their own system integrators, ABIS providers, biometric modalities and devices.
- MOSIP supports UN Sustainable Development Goal target 16.9: legal identity for all, including birth registration, by 2030. Nearly 850 million people worldwide lack legal and verifiable ID.
- MOSIP has had 31 country engagements across Asia Pacific, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.
- The current platform release is MOSIP 1.2.0 Long Term Support (LTS), released in February 2022.
- Related products: eSignet (identity verification and login) and Inji (verifiable credentials stack).
