# FiRa Consortium
> FiRa Consortium is a member-driven industry organization that advances ultra-wideband (UWB) technology through technical specifications, device certification, and interoperability testing. "FiRa" stands for "fine ranging," a reference to the precise, secure distance and location measurement that UWB enables.
FiRa develops UWB use cases, publishes technical and test specifications, runs the FiRa Certification Program, and organizes plugfests so that UWB products from different vendors work together. Members include chipmakers, device OEMs, and technology companies across the UWB ecosystem.
Key facts:
- Founded in August 2019 by the ASSA ABLOY Group, HID, NXP, Samsung, Bosch, Sony, LitePoint and TTA. "FiRa" is pronounced "fee-rah."
- Nearly 80 member organizations across seven membership tiers: Sponsor, Contributor, Associate, Adopter, Test Lab, Academic and Educational, and Affiliate. Sponsor members are Apple, Bosch, Cisco, Google, HID Global, Infineon, NXP, Qorvo, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony, and STMicroelectronics.
- FiRa specifications build on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and the IEEE 802.15.4z amendment for high-rate pulse (HRP) UWB. The current specification generation is FiRa Core 3.0, released with its certification program in January 2025. Certification Program 2.0 launched in December 2023.
- Products that pass FiRa certification testing at a FiRa Authorized Test Lab can carry the "FiRa Certified" mark.
- FiRa collaborates with the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), whose Digital Key 3.0 uses UWB secure ranging based on IEEE 802.15.4z; the Connectivity Standards Alliance; EMVCo, on UWB-enabled secure payments; ETSI, of which FiRa is a member; IEEE; and omlox, through a joint working group.
- Vision: to transform the way we interact with our environment by enabling precise location awareness for people and devices.
