# TruLens
> TruLens is an open source library for evaluating and tracing AI agents. Instrument with OpenTelemetry and score every step with benchmarked LLM judges.
Notes for interpreting these docs:
- Tracing is OpenTelemetry-native. Spans carry TruLens semantic conventions, so a trace is portable to any OTel backend.
- Evaluations run two ways: as traces land, or over a dataset after the fact. Both use the same metric definitions.
- Snowflake is one supported logging backend, not a requirement. TruLens runs locally against SQLite or Postgres.
- Metrics are LLM judges with explanations attached. A score without a reason is not the intended output.
