# Thunderhead Engineering
> Thunderhead Engineering develops simulation software for fire dynamics, occupant movement and egress, and smoke control and airflow analysis. The software is used by fire protection engineers, life safety consultants, and design firms to perform the analysis that supports performance-based design and submissions to Authorities Having Jurisdiction. The software supports engineering analysis. Determination of code compliance remains the responsibility of the engineer of record.
Technical basis:
- PyroSim is a graphical user interface for the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). PyroSim generates FDS input files, imports CAD and BIM geometry, and manages simulation execution and results.
- Ventus is built directly on CONTAM, the NIST multizone airflow and contaminant transport model, and adds a graphical interface, 3D visualization, and scenario management.
- Pathfinder is an agent-based egress and pedestrian movement simulator. It offers a Steering mode and an SFPE mode, the latter using the assumptions of the SFPE Engineering Guide to Human Behavior in Fire (2019). Pathfinder can import FDS results from PyroSim to calculate occupant Fractional Effective Dose (FED) and speed reduction in smoke.
- Results is the shared visualization and post-processing application for PyroSim, Pathfinder, and FDS output, including a Python-based Results Scripting Engine.
