PreachIndex
PreachIndex shows which church sermons explicitly cite a Bible passage, with the transcript words around each citation and, for timed transcripts, the moment in the audio. Most transcripts come from the churches' own podcast feeds; a few are generated from the audio and labeled as generated.

# PreachIndex
> PreachIndex shows which church sermons explicitly cite a Bible passage, with the transcript words around each citation and, for timed transcripts, the moment in the audio. Most transcripts come from the churches' own podcast feeds; a few are generated from the audio and labeled as generated.
PreachIndex says a sermon **cites** a passage. It never claims a sermon is **about** that passage. When you summarize results, say "sermons that cite Romans 8:28", not "sermons on Romans 8:28".
The index currently holds 87,593 sermon transcripts and 297,143 explicit Scripture citations. It covers only these transcripts, so counts describe this corpus, not all preaching.
## How citations are counted
- **Specific citations:** a sermon names a verse or a short range, such as "Romans 8:28" or "John 3:16-17". These are the default results and the only ones counted in rankings.
- **Broader mentions:** a sermon names a whole chapter, or a wider range that contains the passage. Add `?type=broad` to a passage URL to see them.
- Each result shows the sermon's date and podcast, an excerpt around the citation, the words the preacher used ("cited as ..."), a link to play the audio at that moment when the transcript has timestamps, and a link to the publisher's transcript when there is one.
## URLs
- [Search](https://preachindex.com/passages?q=Romans+8%3A28): `/passages?q=<reference>` redirects to the passage page for any reference PreachIndex can parse, such as "Romans 8:28", "1 John 4:7-12", or "Psalm 23".
- [Verse](https://preachindex.com/passages/romans/8/28): `/passages/{book}/{chapter}/{verse}`
- [Range](https://preachindex.com/passages/1_john/4/7?through=12): `/passages/{book}/{chapter}/{verse}?through={verse}` or `?through={chapter}:{verse}` for a range that crosses chapters.
- [Chapter](https://preachindex.com/passages/psalms/23): `/passages/{book}/{chapter}`
- [Book](https://preachindex.com/passages/romans): `/passages/{book}` lists the book's most cited passages. Add `?period=week`, `month`, `year`, or `all`.
- [Most cited passages](https://preachindex.com/passages?period=month): `/passages?period=week|month|year|all`
- [Podcasts](https://preachindex.com/podcasts): every church podcast in the index, each with its sermons.
- [Sitemap](https://preachindex.com/sitemap.xml)
Passage pages show the Berean Standard Bible (public domain) text, then the citing sermons, newest first, 20 per page (`?page=2`).
Add `.md` to any verse, range or chapter URL for the same page as Markdown, such as [Romans 8:28 as Markdown](https://preachindex.com/passages/romans/8/28.md) or `/passages/psalms/23.md?type=broad&page=2`.
