Pocket Science
Citizen science needs people, not just software. Pocket Science combines scientific methods with creative, distinctive participant experiences. The invitation, simple task, tailored feedback, science communication, outreach and continuing care matter as much as the app. Well-guided observations, measurements or classifications can then become a useful distributed dataset. Serious science underneath; no rocket science for the user. No future audience size is guaranteed.

Pocket Science builds and operates tailor-made citizen science apps and complete observatories, plus other science-backed public apps. Any organisation with a credible public-science goal can commission the work—including research teams, public agencies, policymakers, NGOs, foundations and community organisations. Water quality is a prominent specialist route through Mini Secchi and iSPEX2.
Primary routes: [citizen science apps](https://pocket.science/citizen-science-apps/), [water-quality sensors and methods](https://pocket.science/water-quality-sensors.html), and the [evidence and project portfolio](https://pocket.science/case-studies/).
Science is always involved, but the portfolio categories remain distinct: citizen science, crowd science, science-backed public apps and professional research instruments. Aware Hero and Digital Diversity Wheel were science-backed apps made for Oxfam Novib, not necessarily citizen-science projects. Transit of Venus was crowd science: its experiment tested whether a worldwide crowd could repeat the historic method; producing a scientifically new value for one astronomical unit was not the intended outcome.
