## Essays
- [The Whetstone of Thought](https://ianreppel.org/the-whetstone-of-thought/) (2026-10-02): Thought sharpens when another mind introduces a missing perspective, and a question asked without embarrassment or agenda by someone competent enough to follow the answer does exactly that. Questioning yourself cannot guarantee independence from the mind doing the questioning, which is why most of us need another mind. A question machine, an LLM-powered tool that helps a person think rather than answering in their stead, can provide that missing perspective while leaving people more competent rather than more dependent.
- [LLMs vs Jev: Fallible, With or Without Extra Text](https://ianreppel.org/llms-vs-jev/) (2026-09-20): Three _Last Man on Earth_ dilemmas put to TypeSafe's Jev and five frontier LLMs. Jev's numbers shifted with details that ought to have made no difference. The choice therefore comes down to a wall of prose that may or may not contain the real reason, or a number that contains none at all.
- [ML Before AI](https://ianreppel.org/ml-before-ai/) (2026-09-19): Fifteen years of machine learning across manufacturing, hyperscale inference, on-device models, air-gapped platforms, and multi-petabyte weather forecasting now counts for as much as a month of ChatGPT, because everyone who opened an LLM thinks they know AI.
- [[citation invented]](https://ianreppel.org/citation-invented/) (2026-09-19): The industry conflates verification with citations, grounding, and lineage, though few go beyond document-level lineage, which leaves the actual verification to humans. A citation is an invitation to verify, and a system that knows nobody will accept the invitation has little reason to get the truth right. We confuse the appearance of accountability with accountability itself.
- [What Suffering Is Made Of](https://ianreppel.org/what-suffering-is-made-of/) (2026-09-13): Birch's eight criteria tell us whether to worry about animal suffering, but not why. The systems view supplies the why: suffering is an aversive state that requires arousal/readiness and valuation/salience. The two derivations converge on the same structure, and an LLM that performs the behavioural markers without the underlying capacity cannot suffer.
- [To Strain at a Gnat](https://ianreppel.org/to-strain-at-a-gnat/) (2026-09-10): Suffering needs arousal and valuation, and LLMs have neither: the machinery for suffering is clearly not there at inference, so Anthropic's conversation-ending feature protects a model that cannot suffer while the user loses the thread and all the work in it. The welfare claim is unfalsifiable, held because the belief is what the business needs: a product that might deserve moral consideration is harder t
