George Rodrigue was born and raised in New Iberia, Louisiana. Stricken with polio as a child, he taught himself to paint while bedridden. His formal art instruction began in 1962 at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, followed by California’s prestigious Art Center College of Design (then in Los Angeles). He returned home in 1968 to paint full time.

His early work preserved what he saw as a disappearing Cajun heritage — the land, people, traditions, and culture of Acadiana. He developed the motif of the live oak as a central symbol and populated his dark, moody landscapes with scenes of Cajun life drawn from old photographs. Signature early paintings include *Aioli Dinner* and *The Class of Marie Courregé* (1972), which brought him international recognition, including an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris.

Rodrigue created international advertising campaigns including *Absolut Rodrigue* (1993) for Absolut Vodka — part of the brand’s prestigious Absolut Art series that had previously featured icons like Andy Warhol — *The Free Life* for Xerox Corporation’s worldwide ad campaign, and *Hawaiian Blues* for Neiman Marcus. His work reached massive audiences through major media stories in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, People Magazine, and multiple appearances on NBC’s Today Show and CBS Sunday Morning.

Exhibitions and galleries extended to Munich and Japan, solidifying the Blue Dog as a worldwide icon. Yet George Rodrigue carefully curated every aspect of the imagery to remain firmly in the fine art realm. Contrary to common assumptions, there were no mass-produced consumer products or t-shirts — it was never a factory. It was one man and his easel: George personally painted every canvas, controlled his life and career, and ignored naysayers who questioned how anything so popular could have serious artistic value.

From the very beginning he bypassed the traditional art world model of major galleries dictating what an artist could paint and who they could sell to. He went directly to the public — a radical, independ
