# Figma Developer Documentation
> Documentation for building on Figma's developer platform. Covers the Plugin API, Widget API, REST API, Code Connect, Figma MCP Server, and Embed Kit.
Figma is a collaborative design tool used by millions of designers and developers. The developer platform lets you extend Figma with plugins, create interactive on-canvas widgets, build external integrations via the REST API, connect design components to code with Code Connect, and provide Figma context to AI coding agents via the MCP Server.
Choosing the right API:
- **Plugin API**: Build editor extensions that read and write to the currently open Figma file. Plugins run in-browser alongside the editor and are written in JavaScript/HTML. Best for automating design tasks, importing content, or extending the editor UI.
- **Widget API**: Create interactive objects that live on the Figma or FigJam canvas. Widgets are visible to all file viewers and support multiplayer state. Built with a React-like declarative API using TypeScript and JSX.
- **REST API**: Access Figma data from external tools, scripts, and apps. Mostly read-only, with write access for comments and reactions, variables, dev resources, team and folder creation, file duplication, and team members. Uses Personal Access Tokens, plan access tokens, or OAuth2 depending on the endpoint. Base URL: `https://api.figma.com`. Subject to rate limits.
- **Code Connect**: Bridge your codebase and Figma Dev Mode by mapping design components to code components. Supports React, HTML/Web Components, SwiftUI, Jetpack Compose, and Storybook. Available via CLI or directly in Figma UI.
- **MCP Server**: Provide Figma design context to AI coding agents via the Model Context Protocol. Supports reading designs, extracting variables, and leveraging Code Connect mappings.
- **Embeds**: Embed live Figma files and prototypes in external websites and apps using iframes or the Embed Kit JavaScript SDK.
Authentication: The REST API uses Personal Access Tokens (for scripts and personal use) or OAuth2 (for apps that act on behalf of users). Plugin and Widget APIs do not require authentication as they run within the editor context. The MCP Server uses its own authentication flow during setup.
Rate limits: The REST API enforces rate limits that vary by endpoint and plan tier. See the rate limits documentation for details. Plugin and Widget APIs are not rate-limited but are bounded by the editor session.
