## How Fedi Works (The Fedimint Protocol)

Fedi's wallet services run on Fedimint — a Bitcoin e-cash protocol. Fedimint-based wallets are called Federations and are governed by Guardians (trusted community members).

Fedimint solves the custody problem that sits between two bad options:

- **Self-custody** is expensive, technically difficult, and results in permanent loss if keys are lost
- **Third-party custody** (e.g. exchanges) gives full control to a company, removes privacy, and risks frozen funds
