# European Tech Map

European Tech Map is a curated directory of <!--ETM:companyCount-->3319<!--/ETM:companyCount--> listed European technology companies across <!--ETM:countryCount-->43<!--/ETM:countryCount--> countries and <!--ETM:categoryCount-->50<!--/ETM:categoryCount--> categories, offering European alternatives to US-based software.
## What European Tech Map Checks
Before a company is listed, European Tech Map checks that it is headquartered in an eligible European jurisdiction (EU member state, EEA, EFTA, the UK, or an EU candidate country) and that it has a live product, a working website and reachable European contact details. European headquarters is a firm listing criterion: companies headquartered outside Europe are not listed.
European Tech Map does not verify ultimate beneficial ownership (UBO) for listings in general. Ownership is traced manually only in a small number of cases, so a listing should not be read as an independent confirmation of who ultimately owns or controls the company. Where a non-European owner or controller is known, the listing carries a disclosure flag.
"Verified" is the name of a paid tier on European Tech Map. It reflects the depth of documentation and evidence a vendor supplies for their own listing, not an ownership check by European Tech Map. A claimed listing means a vendor said the listing is theirs and confirmed control of the company domain or email. It is a self-claim, not a verification.
