> Design Mode is the open-source browser visual editor for AI coding agents. It lets you edit a rendered webpage visually, records the exact changes, and hands them to Claude Code, Cursor or another compatible coding agent as Markdown or through Model Context Protocol (MCP).
## Verified facts
- Product: desktop browser extension for Chrome/Chromium, Firefox and Safari on Mac.
- Licence: MIT.
- Current repository version: 3.1.0. That is the version in this source tree as of 16 October 2026; it is not a guaranteed Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons listing version.
- Author: Sandeep Baskaran.
- Source: https://github.com/SandeepBaskaran/design-mode
- Website: https://designmode.app
- Chrome listing: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/design-mode/ighgobegfcmjagombgnfhgioflinojih
- Firefox listing: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/design-mode-add-on/
## Product boundary
Design Mode changes the rendered page in the browser and records style, text, DOM and comment changes. It does not update production source code or deploy a website. Copy as Prompt creates a portable Markdown specification. Send to Agent exposes the session to a connected MCP client; that coding agent must have separate repository access and must implement and verify the source-code change.
Browser-internal pages, extension stores and other protected surfaces cannot be scripted by browser extensions. Localhost, staging and already-logged-in tabs work when the page is a normal scriptable webpage; the editor does not bypass login, SSO or publisher access controls.
## Browser support
- Current Chrome-family desktop browsers with Manifest V3 side panels. The extension manifest does not declare an exact Chrome minimum.
- Firefox 121+ through its native sidebar.
- Safari on Mac: manual install of designmode-for-safari.zip from the latest GitHub release (https://github.com/SandeepBaskaran/design-mode/releases/latest).
- Core editing, the Changes tab and agent hand-off work in both builds.
- Pop-out, Document Picture-in-Picture and the screen EyeDropper remain Chromium-only.
- Chrome toolbar clicks and Alt+D open the launch surface selected in Settings (Side panel by default, Floating, or a Pin-on-top opener). Firefox always opens its sidebar.
## Agent hand-off
1. Inspect an element and make the intended visual edit.
2. Review the recorded selectors, properties, old/new values, text edits, DOM changes and comments.
3. Choose Copy as Prompt, or connect an MCP client through Cloud, Local or Self-hosted mode.
4. Review the coding agent's source diff and rendered result.
Cloud, Local and Self-hosted expose eight session tools: `get_changes`, `apply_changes`, `set_change_status`, `clear_changes`, `mark_comment_resolved`, `get_session_summary`, `export_cha
