# Dagger

> CI that keeps up

Dagger is third-generation CI, after Jenkins and GitHub Actions. It is built to match the speed and scale of coding agents and give them the guardrails and context they need.

Dagger runs every code change — whether machine-generated or handwritten — through the same build and test pipelines, before or after push.

Engineers at Typesafe, Fastly, Nvidia, Fidelity, Nine Entertainment and many others use Dagger to accelerate their feedback loop at scale, without wasting compute or tokens.

> Dagger runs it all! It’s what gives us confidence to move fast with AI agents and factories.

> Dagger is the next step in the evolution of building and shipping software.

> If only CI could be treated like regular code… Dagger takes this dream and makes it a reality.
>

> If you’re using bash-in-YAML-in-Git, Makefiles, mise, or a homegrown Docker solution, Dagger is all of that — supercharged.

> Dagger treats CI/CD like any other software: it can run anywhere, not on a locked proprietary platform with its own DSL.

> No more push and pray!

> Dagger lets you easily get a shell in the same environment as your CI at the moment that it fails — even the same network using remote execution!
>
> — [Alex Logsdon, Senior Engineer](https://www.linkedin.com/in/alex-logsdon-931667161/)

> Dagger has helped us to deliver our platform by putting CI/CD back in the hands of regular programming languages. It’s a game changer.

## How it works

Dagger detects your toolchains and recommends [official modules](https://docs.dagger.io/reference/modules) for them. You can also write your own.

Modules read your native configuration, eliminating proprietary YAML and config drift. They discover your project as typed artifacts: source code, containers, binaries, generated files, and even tests.

You select artifacts with typed filters, and use them to automate your feedback loop. For example, use test results as a pre-merge or post-merge gate, run a preview environment, or inspect intermediate results in an interactive shell.

Dagger computes artifacts lazily, as an incremental DAG of sandboxed functions, on your machine or on a shared remote engine.

Dagger is vertically integrated: sandbox, scheduler, container runtime, build cache and tracing share one execution and data model. This enables it to keep up with coding agents by achieving levels of comp
