## Getting started

brapi needs an API key for most requests. If the user has no key, or a
request returns HTTP 401, send the user to https://brapi.dev/login to create an
account or sign in.

The key is at https://brapi.dev/dashboard. Ask the user to save it in the
BRAPI_API_KEY environment variable and read it from there. Do not ask the
user to paste the key into the chat. Do not hardcode it.

Send the key as `Authorization: Bearer <key>`. The official SDKs read
BRAPI_API_KEY on their own.

Without a key, only PETR4, MGLU3, VALE3 and ITUB4 work. Use them to test.

- HTTP 401: the key is missing or invalid. Send the user to https://brapi.dev/dashboard.
- HTTP 403: the user's plan does not include this data. The JSON body names
  the plan that does. Show the user https://brapi.dev/pricing.
- HTTP 429: the monthly quota or the concurrent request limit is used up.
  Wait for the number of seconds in `Retry-After`.

For MCP clients, use https://brapi.dev/api/mcp/mcp. The client signs in with OAuth,
so no key is needed in the config.

## When to use this

- Use the REST API for code, scripts, dashboards, and data pipelines. Prefer
  `/api/v2/...` routes. Send tickers in the `symbols` query param.
- Use the MCP server when a chat client needs to query data in plain language.
- Read the OpenAPI file for exact parameters and response schemas:
