# The AI Survival Guide

> A free online book by Ace Eddleman on surviving AI and automation: which jobs are at risk, why this wave is different from past ones, and what to do so you end up on the winning side.

Written by Ace Eddleman. First published in 2017 and revised after the arrival of ChatGPT and other large language models. Free to read online. The book is for non-technical readers: it explains how modern AI works, gives a framework for judging which jobs are likely to be automated (predictable patterns, existing frameworks, data availability, ambiguity, and Moravec's paradox), lays out the economic consequences (job scarcity, falling credential value, gains flowing to capital), and finishes with a personal survival strategy (use AI tools, experiment, adapt, protect your attention, learn persuasion, think strategically).

## Introduction

- [Welcome](https://www.aisurvival.org/welcome/): A free online book by Ace Eddleman on surviving AI and automation: which jobs are at risk, why this wave is different, and what to do to end up on the winning side.
- [Why You Should Read This](https://www.aisurvival.org/why-you-should-read-this/): AI will create winners and losers. This guide cuts through the hype and gives non-technical readers a structured roadmap for protecting their income from automation.
- [We All Might Be Screwed](https://www.aisurvival.org/we-all-might-be-screwed/): What AGI and superintelligence would mean for work, why AGI timelines shrank from decades to years, and why today's AI is already enough to threaten your livelihood.

## Foundational AI Knowledge

- [What Is Artificial Intelligence?](https://www.aisurvival.org/what-is-artificial-intelligence/): AI, machine learning, reinforcement learning and LLMs like ChatGPT explained in plain English: what they can do, where they fail, and why that matters for your job.
- [A Brief History of Automation](https://www.aisurvival.org/a-brief-history-of-automation/): From the Luddites to ATMs to factory robots: how automation always shifted power from workers to owners, why it paid off long term, and why machine learning breaks the pattern.
- [The Rise of Machine Learning](https://www.aisurvival.org/the-rise-of-machine-learning/): Machine learning uses data to write its own programs. How supervised learning, reinforcement learning and generative AI moved automation from narrow tasks to cognitive work.
- [The Role of Data](https://www.aisurvival.org/the-role-of-data/): Why raw data and compute beat human expertise in AI (Richard Sutton's Bitter Lesson), why internet-scale data is a commodity, and why proprietary datasets hold the real edge.
- [Are You Replaceable?](https://www.aisurvival.org/are-you-replaceable/): Three questions that predict whether AI will automate your job, applied to truckers, fast food, programmers, copywriters, lawyers and police. Includes an interactive self-test.
