> A community-edited catalogue of programming languages designed for AI agents to author code. 48 projects organised around three philosophical camps: syntactic (strip ambiguity from the surface), verification (make contracts mechanically checkable), orchestration (constrain how agents coordinate), plus adjacent and unclassified buckets.
The catalogue is descriptive, not promotional. Inclusion is based on whether a language's designers explicitly target LLMs or agents as authors — through token-friendly syntax, mechanically checkable contracts, agent-coordination primitives, or first-class effect declarations for model calls. Tools that *use* an LLM at runtime (chatbots, autocomplete plug-ins, IDE assistants) are out of scope.
Originally catalogued in a post ["Three camps alike in dignity"](https://negroniventurestudios.com/2026/05/20/three-camps-alike-in-dignity/) written for the Negroni Venture Studios blog. Maintained by Alasdair Allan.

- [llms-full.txt](https://agentlanguages.dev/llms-full.txt): Every entry concatenated into one machine-readable file. 48 languages, full prose, design DNA cross-references, and timeline events.
## Syntactic camp (16)
Languages whose distinctive move is at the level of syntax — token-friendly surfaces, structural representations, IR-as-source.
- [Axis](https://agentlanguages.dev/languages/axis.md): Backend API language for small LLMs (1B/3B/7B). Twelve top-level constructs cover a production backend; LL(1) grammar and prefix-only expressions ship per-state logit masks for constrained decoding.
- [B-IR](https://agentlanguages.dev/languages/b-ir.md): A Jason Hall blog post on three attempts at an LLM-optimised language: B-IR with unicode opcodes, TBIR with control characters the model rewrote into English keywords, and Loom with pre/postconditions and stable error codes.
- [Canlang](https://agentlanguages.dev/languages/canlang.md): A language for AI agents to build custom business software, with browser forms and MCP tools derived from declared operations and independently authored examples that check their behaviour.
- [Codong](https://agentlanguages.dev/languages/codong.md): Designed for AI to write, with one canonical way to express every operation. Nine bundled modules, structured JSON errors with fix/retry fields, ? operator for propagation. Compiles to Go IR, then native via go build.
- [Faber Romanus](https://agentlanguages.dev/languages/faber.md): Typed compute language designed for coding agents to author and for humans to read. Mechanical syntax; the project states its English keywords were chosen by a multi-model council for the most stable, highest-probability hit on each concept; other locales render the same HIR.
