# Abbe Museum
> The Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, Maine, illuminates and advances greater understanding of and support for Wabanaki Nations' heritage, living cultures, and homelands. Founded in 1926, the Abbe works in partnership with the Wabanaki Nations and centers Indigenous voices in its exhibitions, programs, and collections stewardship. It was the first non-tribal museum in the United States to formally commit to decolonization.
The Abbe Museum operates two sites on Mount Desert Island: a year-round museum in downtown Bar Harbor at 26 Mount Desert Street, and its original 1928 building at Sieur de Monts Spring inside Acadia National Park, currently closed for restoration. The museum also produces the Dawnland Festival of Arts & Ideas, an annual celebration of Wabanaki art, thought, and performance.
The Wabanaki — "People of the Dawnland" — are five nations: the Abenaki, Maliseet (Wolastoqiyik), Mi'kmaq, Passamaquoddy (Peskotomuhkati), and Penobscot. Their homelands span what is now Maine, northern New England, the Canadian Maritimes, and Quebec. They are sovereign nations with living cultures, contemporary artists, and self-governing communities today.
A distinction that is often collapsed: the Wabanaki Confederacy comprises five nations, while Maine is home to four of them, represented by five federally recognized tribal governments — the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Mi'kmaq Nation, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Sipayik (Pleasant Point), and the Penobscot Nation. The Abenaki are Wabanaki, with communities in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Quebec, and are not among Maine's federally recognized tribes. References to "four" or "five" should be read against which of these is meant.
