When all was said and done, the impromptu fundraiser received more than $11,200 in donations and pledges in approximately 60 minutes.  The seeds for the fundraiser were planted a day before the competition, as the team from the Truck Country Training Institute was preparing its facility to host Top Tech on April 10. The idea came to life when trainer Andy Hedrick proposed the idea to Torrens Yount, an instructor for Daimler Truck North America, who was in town for the competition. Yount participated in a similar fundraiser for a veterans’ group in Texas last year. With Hedrick and Yount set to shave their long beards, initially, the goal was to raise $5,000. However, the target increased to $10,000 when Truck Country teammates Kyle Webb and Darius Ripp also volunteered to shave, and Truck Country-Cedar Rapids Service Manager Tyler Zahn offered to trim his “mullet” hairstyle. With the training center’s director, Ray Clark, soliciting funds from the crowd using a microphone, Todd Trentz, also of the training facility, went around the ballroom with hat in hand, collecting cash and pledges from those who gathered. By the time the clippers were put away, the total amount collected or pledged surpassed $11,000.On April 23, members of the organization’s training center and marketing teams visited the Veterans Freedom Center for a tour and to present the check Allan Rowe, the director of the non-profit group. The money will be earmarked for the organization’s Operation: We Care fund to support local veterans and their families in financial need. “It’s folks like yourselves that keep us going,” Rowe said. “You’re now a part of this. Remember that. So, when presented with the chance to welcome a group of veterans to her horse stable, the Stoops-Dayton truck sales representative embraced it.In August, Raiff, and her husband Brian, a former Stoops teammate, welcomed the opportunity to host a group of 55 Marine veterans, from the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines – Golf Company, to their Willow Creek Stables in Lebanon, Ohio. The veterans were joined by family members, bringing the total number of visitors to 123. “It was kind of a no-brainer,” said Deb, of the opportunity to host the Marines. “My husband and I are kind of an extend-the-hand people.” The visit to Willow Creek Stables was a stop as part of a four-day gathering of Golf Company Marines, which was supported by the Warrior Reunion Foundation. The veterans journeyed to Ohio for what was the first time many of them had seen each other in years after returning from deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Raiffs learned of the opportunity to host the group after viewing a Facebook post seeking a place that the Marines could be around horses.Working in collaboration with those who board their horses at Willow Creek, as well as others who donated the use of their animals for the day, the visitors were able to enjoy a day of riding, playing horseshoes and cornhole, listening to a pair of bands, and enjoying meals donated by local establishments. “Everyone just had a really great time,” Deb said of watching the Marines reengage in their relationships with one another. She noted the Marines were initially reluctant to ride but were drawn in after seeing their spouses and children interact with the animals. Eventually, a total of 14 trail rides took place on the Willow Creek property that day.Deb noted the camaraderie not only between the veterans, but also between their family members. “Not only did the guys come together, their children acted like they knew each other their entire lives,” she said. “The same with the wives.” The Raiffs plan to welcome more veterans’ groups to their property in the future, “especially now that we know what to expect,” Deb said. In the meantime, Willow Creek has welcomed a couple of local members of the reunion group back again to visit. Deb said horses make great companions. We tell them anytime they want to come out, you can tell these guys (horses) a secret and they will never tell a soul,” she said. - [Truck Country opens high-visibility location in Dyersville](https://www.truckcountry.com/truck-country-dyersville/): If you build it, they will come.Truck Country is borrowing a theme often associated with the ever-popular film, “Field of Dreams,” with the opening of its newest location in Dyersville, Iowa. To put things in perspective, they have been with companies that ultimately would make up the McCoy Group for all but 19 years of the organization’s nearly 64-year history. Both women vividly remember the process of joining the organization, including their initial meeting with company founder, Bob McCoy, Sr., before joining businesses that were precursors to the McCoy Group’s operations. “I answered a blind ad that was in the Republican Journal (newspaper) in Darlington, Wis,” James recalled. “I was interviewed and hired to do the accounting for Motor Truck Lease, Inc. I remember that interview very clearly — it was Bob McCoy, Sr., Roland Trevethan and Jack McCoy who conducted the interview and gave me my chance to be part of this company.”Meanwhile, Ubersox intended for her stint with the McCoy Group to be a temporary stop. “After I received my associate degree, my accounting instructor informed me about a position at GMC Truck Sales in Shullsburg, Wis.,” Ubersox remembered. “Bob McCoy, Sr. and Jack McCoy interviewed me the day after I graduated, and they asked me to start the following Monday, May 24, 1976. I planned on moving to Lacrosse, Wis., but thought I would try this out for a year or two before I moved.”In addition to her initial accounting position with Motor Truck Lease, James also served as a truck sales assistant for the company, as well as an assistant to Bob McCoy, Sr. for many years. When Foodliner joined the McCoy Group in the 1980s, James served in multiple capacities, including in the areas of billing, settlements, licensing and safety. James, in late 1994 was asked to join the dealership accounting team, a position that brought her to the company headquarters in Dubuque. However, within six or so months, she was asked to take on a role with the parent company. “I knew it would be a challenging and rewarding experience,” she said. “So, they created the position of Administrative Assistant which was my title for so many years and I wasn’t wrong, it has been challenging and rewarding.”Like James, Ubersox eventually took on a role with Foodliner.“I had a choice to stay with GMC Truck Sales, now Truck Country, or move to Foodliner, a new trucking company, that was just (purchased),” Ubersox recalled. “I took the opportunity to work for Foodliner because I thought it would be exciting to help establish a new company.”Over the years, Ubersox used her talents to assist Foodliner in multiple areas, including in accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, with the most time spent with the general ledger accounting department.“I played different roles during my career including being the Foodliner and Quest Liner accounting manager for several years and finishing my career as SkyBitz Support Manager, which was a fun challenge,” Ubersox said.“When I started there were only Shullsburg, Dubuque and McMorHan Trucking, and everything was done by hand,” James added, noting the bygone era.Despite entering into retirement, the women expect to be plenty busy in the years ahead.“My husband (Gary) and I plan on taking some long stays at our permanent camp site this summer and hopefully get some fishing done,” James said. “And I can’t forget, just spending time with our kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”“I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family and my grandchildren,” Ubersox said. “I also plan on volunteering at the assisted living facility and the nursing home for residents that don’t have someone to spoil them. Along with that, I would like to volunteer with the youngsters that need a little extra help with their math and reading.”While looking forward to retirement, both James and Ubersox said they will fondly remember their time with the McCoy Group.“I’ll always remember my work family and the memories we created along the way!” Ubersox said. “(The people of the McCoy Group) have been such a big part of my life, and my work family means so much to me,” James added. - [Six Named as Winners of Jim Ham Scholarship Awards](https://www.truckcountry.com/jimham-scholarship-winners/): Congratulations to six individuals who were recently recognized as winners of the inaugural Jim Ham Scholarship awards.Scholarships were presented by the McCoy Group in memory of Jim Ham, Stoops Freightliner-Quality Trailer’s former vice president of operations, who passed away in April 2020. With an eye on potential future expansion, the McCoy Group recently purchased a former hotel located adjacent to the company’s corporate headquarters in Dubuque, Iowa. And while the McCoy Group is a diversified organization with businesses focusing on truck sales/service, transporting goods and selling forestry and heavy construction equipment, entering into the hospitality/lodging business is not currently in the plans. Instead of disposing of items, McCoy Group leader Greg McCoy reached out to representatives from Resources Unite, a local non-profit organization that focuses on providing assistance to those in need, to collaborate on a plan to donate items from the former hotel. On May 6, an army of 100 volunteers, including McCoy Group teammates, removed furnishings from the 56-room hotel, which included 75 to 80 beds, dressers, desks, simple kitchen items and wall art.Resources Unite’s director, Josh Jasper, told the Telegraph Herald newspaper that his organization has had a program in place that help provide furniture to those without essential household items. Prior to the McCoy Group’s donation, Resources Unite had a waiting list of families needing items. “It’s a good opportunity for us to serve a lot of families that have been waiting,” Jasper told the local newspaper. “Pretty much every single day, someone will come into our office saying that they just left a domestic abuse situation and they’re starting over, they’re experiencing homelessness and starting over.”Jenny Hornsby, the McCoy Group’s marketing director, said it was an easy decision for the company to partner with Resources Unite. “When we purchased the building and everything inside of it needed to go, what better way to give back to the community,” she said. “It was a no-brainer.” - [It’s a Messy Business!](https://www.truckcountry.com/messy-business/): For many, trash is a stinky and messy business. Tyler recalls working for the family business at a young age, whether it was riding on the back of a refuse truck or working on a sort line. Shortly after turning 18, he acquired his CDL and started driving his own trash and recycling route. “My passion is garbage,” Truck Country’s Dittmer joked. “I get to talk about garbage trucks all day and go out and visit garbage companies all across the Midwest.”While many industries have struggled during the pandemic, the demand for waste and refuse units soared. “There is one thing about trash, no matter what the economy is doing, the trash still needs to be picked up,” Smith quipped. “During the pandemic, the residential trash doubled because people were stuck at home, so the trucks wore out twice as fast. The industry panicked and purchased all the residential trucks they could find – about like toilet paper.”Learn more about Truck Country and Stoops’ Autocar refuse options by contacting Dittmar (319-304-5104) or Smith (765-808-1259). - [Hill, Ft. Achieving a sense of financial freedom and having the ability to be his own boss continue to be motivating factors, Humphrie said.“The thing was, I wanted to be able to take care of other people in my family,” he said. “I enjoy being able to have the financial freedom to move around and come (and go) as I please.”Working with Truck Country and Dittmar has been a game-changer for North Bay Freight. “Evan has been guiding me the whole way,” Humphrie said. “Those two trucks have been remarkable. Additionally, the trucks feature the new Detroit DT12 Vocational series of transmissions and industry-leading Detroit Assurance suite of safety systems provide for enhanced safety, improved productivity and maximum uptime.Among the many highlights of the 49X, is the reduced weight. In comparable spec’ing to the Western Star’s current 4900 model, the 49X features weight savings of up to 350 pounds.Under its hood, the 49X debuts the all-new Detroit DT12 Vocational series of automated transmissions, which come available as either the DT12-Vor or the DT12-VX.The DT12 Vocational series of transmissions include side PTO capabilities that allow for added flexibility and different applications for all types of terrain. One feature includes a Rock-Free Mode, which allows the 49X to free itself from wheel-stuck situations, while another feature, an Off-Road Mode, enables smooth driving in extreme terrain.Truck Country and Stoops anticipate having models at their dealerships later this fall, with ordering starting this winter. First delivers are expected to begin in early 2021.To learn more about the Western Star 49X, visit: https://bit.ly/3iedTa7 - [Stoops Team Stays in Front of Customers Through Online Training](https://www.truckcountry.com/stoops-online-training/): At the onset of the health pandemic, when people were first urged to social distance and avoid in-person contact, the Stoops Freightliner team explored ways to stay safe, but also relevant, in the eyes of their customers.“On the sales side, we looked at how to get in front of (the customers) without getting in front of them,” explained Austin Hill, Stoops technical sales representative. With that thought in mind, a concept raised was to continue to provide training opportunities for customers, but strictly through an online venue. Stoops’ online training sessions were held using the online video communication medium, Zoom.Starting in the spring of 2020, the online training sessions were held weekly on Friday afternoons. Presentations were limited to approximately 25 minutes, with the final five or so minutes reserved for questions.“If it is over one-half hour, it is too long,” Hill explained.Hill said his goal is to come up with training topics that are relevant to a cross-section of departments.“We try to make (the topics) all-inclusive,” he said. “We really try to focus on any detail in the transportation group. That is my goal.”Recent topics have included presentations on WABCO control systems and air disc brakes, Detroit Assurance, and understanding features of the DT12 transmission system. As the year has progressed and with over 40 topics addressed, the sessions have now been paired back to occur every other week. While the long-term future of the training sessions is uncertain, as every session has been recorded, Hill hopes to someday be able to create a virtual library that would be accessible to customers to go back and review. - [Truck Country comes to Chicagoland with new Hampshire location](https://www.truckcountry.com/truckcountry_newhampshire/): The North Chicago location is the Truck Country dealership group’s 25th dealership in Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin, and now Illinois.
