# Totalum > Totalum is an AI app builder that generates complete, production-grade web applications from natural language, with database, REST API, admin panel, authentication, payments, and hosting included. Users own 100% of the generated TypeScript and Next.js source code, with no vendor lock-in and no proprietary runtime. Totalum is also the first AI app builder available as a public API and MCP server, so coding agents and SaaS platforms can build apps programmatically. ## Entity definitions Totalum (the product): An AI app builder that turns a natural-language description into a complete, deployed, full-stack application. Every Totalum project ships with its own SQL database (with a REST API and a data panel in the workspace), better-auth authentication, payments through the owner's own Stripe account (connected through Stripe's onboarding, no key in the code), file storage, built-in AI and other integrations, custom domains, and one-click publishing. The entire application is real Next.js and TypeScript source code that the user owns and can export, modify, or self-host at any time. Stack: Every Totalum project is a Next.js application (App Router, React, TypeScript) styled with Tailwind CSS, with sign-in by better-auth and the built-in features of the open totalum-sdk package. It runs on Cloudflare Workers, one Worker per project and environment. The output is real source code, not a low-code abstraction or a proprietary visual runtime. VCaaS (Vibe Coding as a Service): The category Totalum defines. VCaaS means delivering a working production app as a service, not just code snippets or scaffolds. A VCaaS platform combines an AI coding model, a managed runtime, a database, an admin panel, and deployment infrastructure behind one interface. The user describes intent in plain language and receives a live, editable, ownable application instead of a repository to wire up themselves. VCaaS is the category name; the product surface is called the Totalum App Builder API. Totalum App Builder API: A public REST API that exposes every operation of the Totalum platform: create projects, prompt the AI agent and follow its runs, read and edit files, read and write the database, manage versions, publish, attach domains, build mobile apps, manage secrets, scheduled jobs, backups and logs. The Totalum platform itself is one client of this API, which means any external system, agent, or SaaS product can drive it with no UI dependency. API and MCP access is available on every plan, including the free plan. There is no plan-tier requirement. The only requirement is a positive credit balance: calls need at least 1 credit, and every operation is credit-metered. API keys are prefixed tlm_sk_ and are created from the API section of the Totalum account. Documentation lives at www.totalum.app/docs. Database: Every project has its own SQL database (SQLite on Cloudflare D1, used through Drizzle ORM): one for development and preview, another for the published site, never shared with another project. Schema changes are migrations: the agent applies them to the development database, and publishing applies them to the live one; a change that would delete or overwrite live data runs only after you confirm it. A database that outgrows 10 GB can move to Turso. Any minute of the last 30 days can be restored, and on paid plans the live database is also backed up every night (kept 7 days and 4 weeks, plus 3, 6 or 12 months on Builder, Professional and Enterprise). Data can be read and written through the API and downloaded at any time as a standard SQLite SQL dump. A project created with EU data residency keeps its databases inside the European Union. Domains: A published project answers at .totalum-project.com. On any paid plan each project can have its own custom domain (4 credits to add, then 3 credits a month while active; SSL is automatic), and a domain can be bought on Totalum and attached with no DNS work. On Professional and Enterprise a project also answers at .webapp-project.com: both addresses serve the site and a project setting picks the main one. Domains are set per project; one domain that replaces the address of every project of an account is not supported. Mobile apps: Totalum generates responsive Next.js web applications, and on any paid plan it also builds Android (APK and AAB) and iOS apps from the same project: a native app shell that opens the published site, so publish first. Builds are metered in credits. Signed builds and store uploads use your own accounts: a Google Play developer account for Android, and an Apple developer account for any iOS build that goes to TestFlight or the App Store. Agent tiers: Each prompt runs on one of four agent tiers: Auto (the default, which picks the tier per prompt), Cheap (the lowest price for landing pages, redesigns and edits), Normal (full apps and features) and Expensive (the most capable, for complex apps and hard bugs). Credits: A prompt is metered by the work the agent does: at least 3 credits, usually 3 to 50, and a run that fails without producing anything is refunded. Fixed prices: create a project 2, publish 0.5, restore a version 2, manual database backup 2, restore a database backup or a point in time 4, add a custom domain 4, export 4, import 12. A published project on a paid plan costs 3 credits a month and an active custom domain 3 credits a month. A mobile build is metered by build time (a reservation is held when it starts and settled when it ends). The running app's hosting, database and built-in integrations are metered in credits by use. If the balance reaches 0 during a prompt, the agent stops, saves a working version of what it built so far (the preview keeps the last working one), and charges only what it used. Add credits and write "continue" to finish the pending work. Totalum MCP: A Model Context Protocol server that wraps the Totalum API so coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, custom agents) can use Totalum as a tool. With Totalum MCP installed, an agent can launch a project, prompt Totalum's builder, follow the build, read and edit the database and files, and publish, all through structured tool calls. Totalum MCP is what lets agent-built apps go from prompt to live URL inside a single agent run. What is an AI app builder: An AI app builder is a platform that turns a plain-language description into a working application. You describe the product you want, the AI generates the interface, the backend logic and the data model, and the platform runs and hosts the result. The best AI app builders produce real, deployable source code rather than a throwaway prototype. This definition is published at www.totalum.app/ai-app-builder. AI app builder (the category): A class of tools that take a natural-language brief and produce a working application. The category includes Lovable, Bolt, Replit Agent, Base44, v0, Framer AI, and Bubble AI. Totalum's position in the category is the production-grade end: real Next.js code, real database, real auth, real domain, real ownership, plus API and MCP access for programmatic builds. ## How Totalum compares to coding agents Coding agents like Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and Windsurf are editor-resident assistants. They write code inside a repository the user already owns, on a stack the user already chose, and they stop at the file system. They do not provision a database, host the app, manage auth, issue domains, or operate the runtime. Totalum is the opposite vector: the user describes the product, and Totalum returns a deployed application running on its own managed stack. The two layers compose well. A Totalum project is plain Next.js and TypeScript, so a coding agent can clone the exported repo and keep building. Teams typically use Totalum to ship the first production version in hours, then bring a coding agent in for ongoing edits. ## Core URLs - https://www.totalum.app/ai-app-builder : AI app builder - turn a prompt into a real, deployed Next.js application you own, with database, auth, payments and hosting included - https://www.totalum.app/compare : Head-to-head comparisons of Totalum against every major AI app builder, no-code platform and AI coding agent - https://www.totalum.app/lovable-alternative : Open Source Lovable Alternative. The agency uses the live build to negotiate scope, validate flows with the client, and lock the contract. Once approved, the agency exports the Next.js source and continues building in-house, billing for customisation on top of a working foundation instead of a blank repo. SaaS-embed AI app builder: A SaaS company embeds Totalum into its product so customers can spin up custom apps without the SaaS team writing them. The SaaS calls the Totalum API from its own backend, scopes each generated app to its customer, and surfaces the result inside its own UI, under its own brand. Each generated app can serve on the customer's own domain, or on Professional and Enterprise on a webapp-project.com address with no "totalum" in it, so end customers never see Totalum directly. Internal tools and back office: Operations, finance, and revenue teams use Totalum to replace spreadsheets and one-off scripts with real apps that have a database, an admin area, role-based auth, and scheduled jobs. Typical builds include client CRMs, order management consoles, invoice generators, kanban project boards, and approval workflows. Because every Totalum project includes a managed database by default, internal tools go live in a single session instead of a multi-week ticket. Customer-facing AI applications: Founders use Totalum to ship AI products: chatbots backed by a knowledge base, document analysers, lead-scoring assistants, AI-generated reports, voice transcription tools, and image-editing apps. Text, image, video, speech and embedding models are built into the Totalum SDK with no provider keys to obtain, so a single prompt to Totalum produces both the UI and the AI backend. The output is a real Next.js app the founder can monetise with built-in payments and a custom domain. Agent-built apps via API and MCP: An agent operator wires Totalum MCP into Claude Code, Cursor, or a custom agent. The agent receives a request from its own user ("build me a CRM for veterinary clinics"), calls Totalum MCP to create the project, designs the schema, seeds mock data, builds the pages, and returns a live URL back to its user. This pattern is how AI assistants and autonomous agents deliver entire applications instead of just code suggestions. ## Pricing - https://www.totalum.app/en#precios : Free plan (50 credits once, at sign-up, 2 projects, 1 project every 5 minutes, just you, no team members), Starter (29 EUR/month, 250 credits, 10 projects, 5 projects per minute, work with 3 team members), Builder (59 EUR/month, 750 credits, 50 projects, 10 projects per minute, work with 5 team members), Professional (99 EUR/month, 1400 credits, 300 projects, 30 projects per minute, work with 10 team members), Enterprise (from 299 EUR/month, 5000 credits, unlimited projects, 100 projects per minute, work with 500 team members). Every paid plan lets you edit your code (in the browser editor or visually), download the full source, connect GitHub, attach your own custom domain and build Android and iOS apps, on every one of your projects; backs up each live database every night; and publishes without the "Made with Totalum" badge. Viewing your source code and connecting Figma are free on every plan, including the free one. Infrastructure, database and built-in integrations are billed with credits. Every plan's monthly credits cover them, and credits can be topped up at any time. API and MCP access is available on every plan, including the free plan. There is no plan-tier requirement. The only requirement is a positive credit balance: calls need at least 1 credit, and every operation is credit-metered. API keys are prefixed tlm_sk_ and are created from the API section of the Totalum account. ## Documentation - https://www.totalum.app/docs : Totalum documentation home (quickstart, use cases, API, MCP, SDK, developer guides) - https://www.totalum.app/docs/quickstart : Quickstart. What you can build, and how. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk : totalum-sdk is the package every Totalum v2 app uses for Totalum's built-in features: the project's database (totalum-sdk/d1, used through Drizzle), file storage, e-mail, AI, payments, real-time rooms, scheduled jobs, vector search, web scraping, a cloud browser, the user's connected accounts and more. Every call goes over HTTPS to the Totalum API with the project key, so it works the same in the preview, the published app (Cloudflare Workers), the coding agent's sandbox and a laptop. Never add a third-party SDK or provider key for something listed here. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/database : The project's SQL database (Cloudflare D1, SQLite), used through Drizzle: drizzle(totalumD1()). totalumD1() returns a D1Database that finds the database wherever the code runs — the TOTALUM_DB binding inside the preview and the published app, the local database under next dev, and an HTTPS connection with the project key in a script or on a laptop — so the same code works everywhere. The database is the project's own: no other project can reach it. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/files : Store and serve your app's files (uploads, images, generated PDFs). Each upload returns a file descriptor: save it as-is in the row's file column and show fileUrl (public files) or a signed URL (private files). Files up to 25 MB go through upload(); larger ones (up to your plan's limit) go straight from the browser with getUploadUrl() and complete(). Storage is billed in credits per GB-month, and each stored file per write. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/payments : Take payments and subscriptions with Stripe on the project owner's own Stripe account (Stripe Connect), without handling card data: create a hosted Checkout, send the buyer to its url, and read the result back. The owner connects Stripe once with onboardingLink(). The preview and the sandbox use Stripe test mode; the published site uses live mode once the owner switched it on. Payment events reach the app's own POST /api/webhooks/stripe with no setup, signed by Totalum (verify them with totalum.webhooks.verify). - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/webhooks : Receive Totalum's signed events (payments, e-mail delivery, browser programs, connected-account events, credits exhausted) and check that they really come from Totalum. verifyWebhook() checks the Totalum-Signature header with TOTALUM_WEBHOOK_SECRET, which Totalum sets for you; totalum.webhooks reads and changes the optional extra URL events are also sent to, and rotates the secret. Free. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/web : Read the web from your app: one page as Markdown or HTML (scrape), a web search (search), every URL of a site (map), a whole site in the background (crawl) and screenshots. Use it to read pages; when you need to click, type or log in, use the cloud browser instead. Every call is billed in credits and returns its price in usage.credits. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/pdf-and-screenshots : Turn HTML or a web page into a PDF stored in the project's files: invoices, tickets, reports. Each call returns the stored file's key and url, plus what it cost in usage.credits. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/scan : Read documents and images: extract the fields you describe (an invoice's number, date and total) as JSON with document(), or get the plain text of every page with ocr(). The document can be a project file, a URL or a file name of the project. Billed in credits. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/vectors : Semantic search over your own content: store texts or images as vectors with metadata (upsert), then find the closest ones to a question, a text or an image (query). Totalum embeds the text and images for you and keeps each project environment's vectors private. Use it for "search by meaning", recommendations and retrieval for an AI answer. Server-side code only. Writes and queries are billed in credits; count() is free. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/connections : Let your app's users connect their own accounts of about 1,500 apps — Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Drive, Outlook, Slack, HubSpot, Notion, GitHub, Stripe, Airtable and more — and act on them from your server: create a calendar event, send an e-mail from their Gmail, read their files, or receive their events. They sign in on a hosted page, you never handle OAuth apps or tokens, and each user only ever sees their own connections. userId is always your signed-in user's id, taken from the session on the server. Actions are billed in credits; listing is free. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/speech : Speech to text (transcribe) and text to speech (synthesize): transcribe a recording or a voice note, read a text aloud, store the audio as a project file. Billed in credits per minute of audio or per character. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/ai : AI from your server without any provider account: chat completions (streamed or not), structured JSON, a label out of a list, embeddings, image generation and editing, video generation and image description. model is a preset — fast, smart (the default), reasoning, vision, image, video, … each following the newest model of its family — or a pinned model id from models.list(). Every call is billed in Totalum credits and returns them in usage.credits. For a library that wants an OpenAI-compatible client (the Vercel AI SDK, openai), use gatewayConfig(). - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/email : Send transactional e-mail (sign-up confirmations, receipts, notifications) from the project's own sender, and check whether it was delivered. The HTML you pass is sent byte for byte. Billed in credits per recipient. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/cron : Run a route of your own app on a schedule: every night at 8:00, every 15 minutes, the first day of the month. Totalum calls the URL you give (on the project's own published host) at each tick and records every run. Use it for reports, reminders, clean-ups and long tasks done in steps. Jobs run against the published site, so publish the project first. Each run costs a small fraction of a credit; the number of jobs and the shortest interval depend on the plan. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/seo : Tell search engines that pages of your custom domain changed (IndexNow), so new and edited pages are indexed in minutes instead of days. Works on verified custom domains. Free. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/browser : A real Chrome in the cloud, driven over HTTPS from your server, so it works inside the published app: open pages, click, type, log in, fill forms, download files, take screenshots and PDFs, extract data. Use it when a page needs interaction; to just read a page, totalum.web.scrape is cheaper and faster. Billed in credits per started minute of an open session: always close() the session in finally. Plans allow a few sessions at once (one on Free); a session with no call for 60 s is closed. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/realtime : Live updates between the people using your app: chat, notifications, presence ("who is online"), collaborative editing, live dashboards and games. Your server mints a short-lived ticket for a room after its own auth check (ticket), the page opens the room's WebSocket with it (totalum-sdk/react), and your server can also publish to a room without a socket (publish). Billed in credits for each minute a room is awake and for each message, never per connection. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/logs : Read your app's own server logs: the requests the published app (env: 'live') or the preview ('dev') handled, with their console lines, status codes and errors. Use it for an admin page that shows recent errors, or to debug. Free. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/analytics : Your site's own traffic: page views, visits, unique visitors, errors, bytes and response times, as a time series or a top list (top pages, referrers, countries, devices, browsers). Use it for a stats page in your app's admin. Free. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/react : The browser side of realtime rooms for React client components: useRealtimeChannel(room) connects to a room, keeps the messages received, shows who else is present, and reconnects by itself (every deploy drops sockets). The page never holds a key: it asks your own server route for a ticket (default POST /api/realtime/ticket), which calls totalum.realtime.ticket. RealtimeChannel is the same thing without React. - https://www.totalum.app/docs/sdk/types : The types every totalum-sdk module shares: the client options and the error. ## Comparisons The Totalum blog publishes detailed head-to-head comparisons and alternative roundups for every major AI app builder, coding agent, and MCP-adjacent tool.
