It works in three ways. Engagements run from a four-week assessment to multi-year partnerships. ### Technology Partnership Senior technology leadership on retainer, for organizations without a CTO or leaders who want a peer. Brian Dote works with the executive team on technical direction, vendor oversight, architecture and security reviews, and reporting to the board. ### Platforms & Applications Custom platforms, mobile apps, and AI-integrated systems, from architecture through production. Mobile apps ship on iPhone, iPad, and Android, with cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter where one codebase serves both. ### Web & Digital Presence Custom websites, audited against WCAG 2.2 AA and kept current with hosting, security updates, and content changes after launch. ### Where engagements begin - A new build, when an organization knows what it needs and doesn't have it yet. - A modernization of systems that work but hold the organization back, done in phases. - A rescue of a stalled project or a legacy system that needs a new owner. ### How the practice works Brian Dote leads the technical work on every engagement and stays hands-on in the code. Design comes from Hawaiʻi agencies, led by iQ 360 (iq360inc.com). Development capacity comes from US-based partners Tapiki has worked with for nearly 20 years, led by TechRiver (techriver.net). Clients own their code and accounts from day one, on standard, documented stacks. WCAG 2.2 AA is the accessibility baseline for everything Tapiki builds. ## About Brian Dote Founder and Principal. For the Metro Station Guide, Tapiki led requirements, design, and development of a web application for iPad, iPhone, and touchscreen kiosks in Metro stations, with Zehner Group and Slickage Studios. - Result: The Station Guide and its Information Tower kiosks launched at Union Station’s 75th anniversary celebration in May 2014. The redesigned metro.net served millions of riders. - Role: Web development and technical program management #### Department of Land and Natural Resources · Explore Outdoor Hawaiʻi Gold, Best of the Web – Government Agency. - Page: https://tapiki.ai/work/explore-outdoor-hawaii - Challenge: Hawaiʻi’s Department of Land and Natural Resources needed one place where residents and visitors could find recreation information, apply for licenses and permits, and reserve state parks, along with guidance on the state’s cultural, historical, and natural resources. - Solution: Tapiki developed Explore Outdoor Hawaiʻi as a subcontractor to Tyler Technologies, which created the site for DLNR. It brings boating, camping, commercial activities, filming, fishing, hiking, hunting, and state park reservations into one site. - Result: Launched in July 2024. The site won gold in the Best of the Web – Government Agency category at the 2024 Horizon Interactive Awards, announced by DLNR in February 2025. - Role: Web development, as a subcontractor to Tyler Technologies #### Hawaii Department of Transportation 139 issues documented. A three-phase plan the agency could fund. - Page: https://tapiki.ai/work/hdot - Challenge: A state agency needed to know where its public web presence fell short of accessibility law. - Solution: Tapiki audited a public-facing department web property against WCAG 2.1 and documented every issue, with the page, the criterion, and the fix. - Result: 139 issues documented, and a prioritized three-phase remediation plan the department could fund and act on. - Role: Accessibility audit and remediation planning #### Tapiki StormWatch A free app with Hawaiʻi’s weather warnings, forecasts, and outages in one place, built and run by Tapiki. - Page: https://tapiki.ai/work/stormwatch - Challenge: Hawaiʻi had no single live view of its emergency weather. Warnings, forecasts, and conditions were spread across agencies and sites. - Solution: Tapiki built and runs one, drawing on National Weather Service, National Hurricane Center, USGS, and Pacific Tsunami Warning Center data across iPhone, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and the web. - Result: A free public service Tapiki operates year-round, with Live Activities and community outage reports added for the 2026 season. - Role: Product, design, and engineering. Tapiki runs it. ### Financial Services #### Bank of Hawaii A redesigned boh.com that works on every device. - Page: https://tapiki.ai/work/boh - Challenge: Bank of Hawaii needed a public website built around its customers, one that worked on phones, tablets, and desktops. - Solution: Brian co-led the redesign of boh.com in partnership with Hero Digital (now part of Huge) and Work & Co. The site was rebuilt from scratch, with every page designed for phones, tablets, and desktops. - Result: The redesigned boh.com launched in November 2019. - Role: Co-lead, with Hero Digital and Work & Co ### Health & Science #### Ecobot Field reporting moved from paper to the phone. - Page: https://tapiki.ai/work/ecobot - Challenge: Environmental professionals conducting wetland delineations relied on paper forms, spending 30 to 60 minutes per form turning field notes into regulatory documentation, entirely separate from GIS. - Solution: As founding mobile engineer, Brian built the first version of Ecobot’s iOS app. It captures wetland delineation data, vegetation surveys, and hydric soil observations on the device, with offline entry, automated USACE dominance calculations, GIS mapping, and Regional Supplement references built in. - Result: Form processing dropped from hours to minutes. Ecobot has grown into a leading platform for wetland delineation, used by field ecologists and environmental consultants across the country. - Role: Founding mobile engineer, iOS #### iFirst Medical Technologies An iPhone app measures cartridge fill levels from the camera, with no new hardware. - Page: https://tapiki.ai/work/ifirst - Challenge: Medical device cartridges needed a reliable, non-invasive way to report fill percentage without adding sensors or hardware, using only the device’s existing camera. - Solution: Tapiki built an iOS application that analyzes live camera frames with Core ML and edge detection, finds the cartridge boundary, and calculates fill percentage in real time. The model runs entirely on the device, so no patient data leaves it. - Result: Clinicians get fill-level data from a device that previously offered none, with no change to the physical hardware. - Role: Chief Engineer, advanced AI and application development #### Wayvy Face recognition and health data that never leave the phone. - Page: https://tapiki.ai/work/wayvy - Challenge: People losing weight watch the scale move faster than the mirror. Progress photos show the change but sit unsorted among thousands, and finding someone in their own library meant building face recognition without sending a face or a weight to any server. - Solution: Wayvy, Tapiki’s own iPhone app, pairs each weigh-in from Apple Health with a photo of the user from the same day. Face recognition runs entirely on the phone. Apple Vision finds and aligns faces, and a deep learning model converted to Core ML matches them against a few reference photos. - Result: Health records and biometric data stay on the device. There is no account, no server, no analytics, and no third-party code, and recognition takes about 30 milliseconds per photo. - Role: Product, design, and iOS development ### Hospitality & Community #### Pūlama Lānaʻi · Love Lānaʻi One gallery for everything a visitor can do on Lānaʻi. - Page: https://tapiki.ai/work/love-lanai - Challenge: Pūlama Lānaʻi’s visitor site needed its directory of island resorts, restaurants, shops, transportation, and activities rebuilt as a responsive gallery that works on every screen. - Solution: Working with iQ 360, which supplied the copy and photography, Tapiki designed and then built a filterable masonry gallery on the WordPress site. Each business has a card with its logo, photography, description, and links to discover or reserve, and visitors filter by resorts, dining, retail, transportation, experiences, and culture and the arts. The page went through alpha testing with iQ 360 and beta testing with Pūlama Lānaʻi before launch. - Result: A single, responsive guide to the island, live on lovelanai.com and part of Tapiki’s ongoing work for Pūlama Lānaʻi in collaboration with iQ 360. - Role: Design, WordPress development, and testing #### Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaiʻi The website and a virtual lantern app, since 2013. - Page: https://tapiki.ai/work/shinnyo - Challenge: A cultural event with global attention, presented by the Nā Lei Aloha Foundation, needed a digital presence that could carry it year-round, then through a pandemic. - Solution: Tapiki has managed the site since 2013, including updates, WCAG accessibility work, and technical guidance. When the beach was closed, Tapiki built a virtual lantern app so people could still take part. - Result: Thirteen years in. While the beach was closed, people floated lanterns in the app instead. - Role: Web management, accessibility, and app development ### Enterprise & National #### Sling TV, Times Square A live counter that ran around the clock above Broadway. - Page: https://tapiki.ai/work/sling - Challenge: Sling TV’s Times Square campaign centered on a live savings counter on one of the most watched screens in the world. The Clear Channel Outdoor display renders a dedicated web zone, so the counter had to be a web page that ran without fail, day and night. - Solution: Tapiki built the page behind the animated odometer counter to Clear Channel Outdoor’s specifications for the screen’s high-resolution URL zone, engineered for continuous unattended playback. - Result: The counter ran live in Times Square, ticking past $1.2 billion in viewer savings. - Role: Web development #### Mission Management Company An AI parcel classifier and automated audit reports, designed and built by Brian as CTO. - Page: https://tapiki.ai/work/mmco - Challenge: Church organizations needed to assess, classify, and plan for property portfolios across dozens of locations, with data instead of case-by-case judgment. - Solution: As CTO, Brian designed and built the platform behind the Rapid Renewal Framework. It includes readiness surveys of up to 78 questions for pastors, financial managers, and leadership teams, the MMCo Score for financial, organizational, and property readiness, automated 20-page audit reports, and a classification engine that scores every parcel by property potential and community impact, drawing on census data within a 1.5-mile radius and the Claude API. - Result: In production. Church leaders use the scores and reports to decide what to do with their properties, and Brian continues as CTO. - Role: Chief Technology Officer ## Futures + Field Notes - [What a hurricane season taught me about quiet failures](https://tapiki.ai/field-notes/what-a-hurricane-season-taught-me) (2026-09-30): In StormWatch’s first hurricane season, a tsunami feed was pointed at the wrong ocean and nothing looked broken. - [One paragraph to add to your website RFP](https://tapiki.ai/field-notes/one-paragraph-for-your-website-rfp) (2026-09-17): Six lines to put in a website RFP so you own the domain, hosting, code, and passwords when the project ends. - [Five questions for the AI vendor](https://tapiki.ai/field-notes/five-questions-for-the-ai-vendor) (2026-04-14): What I’d ask an AI vendor if I were still on the buying side, including where the data goes and what it costs in month twelve. - [139 issues. A scanner found 48 of them.](https://tapiki.ai/field-notes/a-scanner-found-48-of-them) (2026-02-20): I audited a state agency’s site against WCAG 2.1. The scanners found 48 problems. Testing without a mouse found 91 more. ## Client list ### Government and public sector - Department of Hawaiian Home Lands - Department of Land and Natural Resources - Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority - Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority - Minority Business Development Agency - Oregon Manufacturing Extension (OMEP) - State of Hawaiʻi ### Education - Academy for Healthcare Innovation - Curriculum Research Development Group - Education Incubator - Harvard Graduate School of Education - Hawaiʻi Online Portal for Education - HiFusion Ed - Kamehameha Schools - Mid-Pacific Institute - Pewa Project - Stanford Leadership In Focus - Think Training - Tinker & Do ### Healthcare - AlohaCare - Hawaiʻi Pacific Health - iFirst Medical Technologies - Kuakini Health System - Lunalilo Home - Mental Health America of Hawaii - MVP Rehab - Ruth Health - Straub Benioff Plastic Surgery - United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii - WePrescribe ### Financial services - Bank of Hawaii - Central Pacific Bank - Charles Schwab - Estate Planning Partners - Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union - HTH Asset Management - Investment Instruments, Corp. - Island Insurance - Swell by CPB ### Nonprofits, foundations, and community - Estria Foundation - EV Ohana - Formation Church - Friends of Kid’s First - Fur-Angel Foundation - Great Aloha Run - Hapalua - Hawaii Food Industry Association - Hawaiʻi Agriculture Foundation - Hawaiʻi Baptist Foundation - Hawaiʻi Food Bank - Hawaiʻi Institute for Public Affairs - Hawaiʻi United Okinawa Association - HT Hayashi Foundation - ISOC Hawaii - Lanakila Pacific - Made in Hawaii Festival - Malama Pono Foundation - Na Koa Foundation - Nā Lei Aloha - Ocean Safety Ohana - Paʻa Pono - Parents And Children Together - Partners in Development Foundation - Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaiʻi - Sugar Museum Maui - The Gift Foundation - The HOME Project - United Way of Metropolitan Nashville ### Hospitality, food, and agriculture - Abundant Forests - Aloha Tofu - Aqua-Aston Hospitality - Atlantis Adventures - Crow’s Nest Half Moon Bay - Grand Wailea Maui - Halekulani - Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company - Hello Again - Kaptain K Sailing Charters - Lānaʻi Air - Leonard’s Bakery - Nabeya Maido - Pacific Coffee Research - Parc Waikiki - Pūlama Lānaʻi - Rainbow Drive-In - Tai Shan Farms - TastyBite ### Real estate and retail centers - Aikahi Park Shopping Center - Avalon Group - Gateway at Mililani Mauka - Hammer Companies - Hokulei Village - Island Colony - Kailua Town - Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center - Kualono Upcountry Living - Kunia Shopping Center - Lanihau Kona - Manoa Marketplace - Napili Plaza - Pearl Highlands Center - PVT Land Company, LTD. - Stanford Carr Development - The Shops at Kukuiula - Topa Financial Center - Vornado Realty Trust - Waianae Mall - Wailuku Town - Waipio Shopping Center ### Business, technology, and media - Alexander & Baldwin - Asia Pacific Films - C.M.
