However, that’s how it is being used. Leaders express alarm if the GDP—the value of all goods and services produced within a nation in a given year—falls. Countries are ranked by GPD or GDP per citizen, implying that countries with higher rankings are doing better overall than countries with lower rankings. What nonsense. We need a better metric for improved quality of life and progress. We need a Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) that accounts for not only monetized economic wealth but, more importantly, includes vital environmental and social factors. Here are five reasons why it’s time we replaced the GDP with a GPI. - [Beyond Best Price: Best Value](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2026/04/14/beyond-best-price-best-value/): New | - [Net-Zero Procurement Toolkit](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2025/09/26/net-zero-procurement-toolkit-2/): The four tools in the Net-Zero Procurement Toolkit expedites Net-Zero Procurement. - [AI-Updated Employee Benefits in Sustainability Business Cases](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2025/07/07/ai-updated-employee-benefits-in-sustainability-business-cases/): A new quantification of employee productivity, hiring and retention benefits - [Comparison of Supplier GHG Status Questionnaires](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2025/05/19/comparison-of-supplier-ghg-status-questionnaires/): The four tools in the Net-Zero Procurement Toolkit expedites Net-Zero Procurement. - [Net-Zero Procurement Toolkit](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2025/02/23/net-zero-procurement-toolkit/): The four tools in the Net-Zero Procurement Toolkit expedites Net-Zero Procurement. For fifteen years, I have been writing and speaking about how corporations can capture the 4 carrots of emerging business opportunities, while reducing their negative environmental and social footprints. I've decided to click into a different gear and to lead with a "burning platform" stick of environmental and social risks that businesses must mitigate if they want to be fit for the future. There are 5 reasons that it's time for me―and perhaps other frustrated sustainability champions―to change tactics. - [3 Strange Signs Our Government Doesn't Want Corporate Taxes](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2015/09/01/3-strange-signs-our-government-doesnt-want-corporate-taxes/): "This government is not that interested in increasing the government's capacity to do anything about anything. They are not interested in raising more revenue." I remember thinking when I read that quote in a recent article in the CCPA Monitor, "Surely, that can't be true!" When employees are engaged in a company’s social and environmental initiatives, people see that the company is more than a bank throwing money at random causes in an effort to buff up its image. They see the company as made up of people who care about tough social and environmental issues. Its employees bring their talent, time, and energy to causes that they personally care about and which align with their company’s mission. Who would have thought that a surprise co-benefit of the company’s support for these projects is the volunteers’ higher level of engagement and productivity in the workplace? - [4 Fixes for Risky Income Inequality](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/04/29/4-fixes-for-risky-income-inequality/): A companion debate to how much employees should be paid (see my last blog) is what the ratio of CEO pay to average worker pay should be. The debate usually centers on three questions: what is the ratio now, what should it be, and what steps can be taken to get us closer to what it should be? There may also be a fourth question: how large can the ratio become before the inequity damages economic growth and social cohesion? In this blog, I'll discuss 4 fixes for this risky income inequality. - [Future-Fit Companies Require Future-Fit Boards](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2015/03/17/future-fit-companies-require-future-fit-boards/): The FFBB takes a different approach, more in keeping with the long-term view the board must maintain. Building on best-available science, the FFBB tackles two key questions. First, what would a truly sustainable, fit-for-the-future business look like? And second, how might we measure progress toward that point? The answer to the first question takes the form of a suite of future-fit goals, covering all major environmental and social issues. These goals define the performance threshold beyond which the company stops simply being 'less bad' and starts contributing to society in a net positive way. In a recent article, Helle recommended five things that boards can do to improve their support for sustainability. Here’s how the FFBB can help with each one: - [CO2 - Why 450 ppm is Dangerous and 350 ppm is Safe](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/01/07/co2-why-450-ppm-is-dangerous-and-350-ppm-is-safe/): The only thing missing is political leadership to make it happen. How long will we tolerate that witting abdication of responsibility? When threatened by terrorist bombings, countries declared a War on Terror. When threatened by rampant drug addiction, countries declared a War on Drugs. Climate change is biggest threat ever faced by humanity. Isn’t it time we declared a War on Climate Destabilization? - [Stranded Assets or Stranded Humanity - Choose one](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2013/10/29/stranded-assets-or-stranded-humanity-choose-one/): Ban Ki-Moon’s strident comment is backed up by the math. We can only add 565 gigatons more carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere before we reach that dangerous 450 ppm concentration. But we have at least 2,795 gigatons of CO2 trapped in proven fossil fuel reserves. That’s about five times more CO2 that we are allowed to add before we reach the tipping point: 5 x 565 = 2,825. That means we must leave 80% of our known fossil fuel reserves in the ground as stranded assets or there is a 50% probability that we will destabilize our climate by 2030. Any questions? - [Five ESG Standards Will Awaken Capital Markets](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2013/05/07/five-esg-standards-will-awaken-capital-markets/): Last week’s blog outlines my four strategies to help capital markets embed environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies into the mindset of executives. I briefly referenced five concurrent ESG standards initiatives that are in play in capital markets to make this happen. They will lead to an ESG mindset in lenders and investors. Following the axiom that “what interests capital markets fascinates executives,” this will precipitate an ESG mindset in company executives. - [3 More Ways to Reframe Sustainability for CEOs](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/07/06/3-more-ways-to-reframe-sustainability-for-ceos/): As sustainability champions, we need to respect executives’ current priorities and help them save face if they “have no time right now” for sustainability. We need to find out what executives do have time for. Then, reframe our proposals as enabling strategies to help them address their urgent, pressing challenges— rather than as one more goal to worry about. Agree with their priorities. Meet them where they are. Honor their terminology and mindset; and suggest how sustainability-based strategies will help to achieve their current goals. In my June 22, 2010 blog, I outlined how sustainability-related strategies address five long-term challenges which are anticipated by CEOs within the next five to ten years. There is a misperception though: that sustainability strategies only apply to long-term goals and aren’t much help with short-term, recession-driven pressures on the bottom line. That’s wrong. Here are three, near-term challenges faced by CEOs, and the accompanying sustainability-based strategies that can help each one: - [4 Contributors to Revenue from Services and Leasing](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/09/20/4-contributors-to-revenue-from-services-and-leasing/): In my last two blogs, we looked at how company sustainability efforts can help generate more revenue because of its enhanced brand image as a responsible corporate citizen, as well as more revenue from new products and new markets. This week, we will look at additional revenue from selling services and leasing products. - [4 ESG-Friendly Findings about Borrowing Rates](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/07/26/4-esg-friendly-findings-about-borrowing-rates/): So the credit standing of borrowing firms is influenced by legal, reputational, and regulatory risks associated with environmental accomplishments. Companies with weaker environmental performance pay a premium for debt financing and companies with better scores pay less for debt. The study found that spread can be as much as 64 basis points (0.64%) and it is growing. - [Aligning ESG Benefits with the Income Statement](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/05/29/aligning-esg-benefits-with-the-income-statement/): We need to make it easy for CEOs, CFOs, and others in the C-suite to see how embedding sustainability strategies into the company’s strategies and operations will contribute to the firm’s success. That is, we need to connect the dots between typical financial statements and the benefits that can be realized from smart environmental, social, and governance (ESG) approaches and programs. Aligning ESG benefits with income statement elements helps executives see the relevance of sustainability initiatives to their current financial priorities. - [A Better Business Model: B Corporations](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/02/08/a-better-business-model-b-corporations/): Our current economic and financial systems sanction obscene excesses at the expense of society. It’s easy and therapeutic to rant. It’s more helpful, but more challenging, to propose viable alternatives. In my last three blogs, I reviewed Hazel Henderson’s, Michael Moore’s, and David Korten’s thoughtful proposals on how to repair our economic and financial systems. We also need more responsible business models, like Benefit Corporations (B Corps).B Corps are a new kind of company which uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. - [3 Videos About the Power of a Few](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/11/30/3-videos-about-the-power-of-a-few/): Sustainability issues can be overwhelming, depressing, and almost traumatizing. At times we may feel powerless to make a difference. In The Cult of Impotence: Selling the Myth of Powerlessness in the Global Economy, author Linda McQuaig provocatively suggests that helplessness is exactly what some large institutions want us to feel, so that they can get away with solutions that are more in their interests than ours. She encourages us to take more personal responsibility for global sustainability challenges. The following three videos strongly support our capitalizing on our ripple effect. - [3 Recent Guides for Sustainability Champions](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/09/07/3-recent-guides-for-sustainability-champions/): In my bibliography at the end of The Sustainability Champion’s Guidebook, I list “20 Good Books on Transforming to a Sustainable Enterprise.” Happily, that list of resources for agents of transformation keeps growing. Here are three more excellent, free, downloadable resources that came out in the last year which I would welcome to my previous list of 20: 1. Planning for Sustainability, from The Natural Step 2. Making Your Impact at Work, from Net Impact 3. Greening your Business, from the RBC Royal Bank - [An Elephant in the Sustainability Room: Growth](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/08/24/an-elephant-in-the-sustainability-room-growth/): In today’s business model, growth is a given—an imperative. “Grow or die” is the undisputed maxim of business leaders. The stock market punishes companies that do not meet growth expectations. Growth is good. However, continuous growth appears to be at odds with sustainability principles. Growth is the 'un-discussable' elephant in the board rooms of companies aspiring to a sustainable business model. - [4 Reasons our Current Business Model is Unsustainable](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/08/03/4-reasons-our-current-business-model-is-unsustainable/): Sooner or later, there is a tough message that sustainability champions need to deliver to harried business leaders—the business game they are playing can’t continue. It’s been fun, but if they keep playing the game the way they are, everyone will lose. The rules need to be updated— quickly. That contention is probably not the best conversation-opener with a senior business leader. But, at some point along the line, sustainability champions should be ready to gently help them see that their current model of doing business is not sustainable. - [Sustainability Business Case # 3: Share Price](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2012/10/30/sustainability-business-case-3-share-price/): The Domini 400 Social Index, Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Sustainalytics’ Jantzi Social Index (JSI), and the Financial Times (London) Stock Exchange Index all track companies rated as sustainability leaders. These indices perform as well as, or slightly better than, indices for the rest of the market. Sustainability leaders do not seem to sacrifice financial market value for their efforts, nor are others missing market gains. - [12 News Services That Help Sustainability Champions Stay Credible](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/06/22/12-news-services-that-help-sustainability-champions-stay-credible/): We must earn the right to lead the sustainability transformation. Leadership is about influence and relationships based on trust and credibility. Staying up to speed on sustainability-related happenings, stories, studies, reports, and progress helps us live up to our image as credible sustainability experts. On the other hand, the more you know, the more you know you don’t know. Sometimes I am introduced as a “sustainability guru,” a flattering but daunting title. I am comfortable with the business case for sustainability and with how to lead an organizational transformation to a culture aligned with sustainability principles. - [7 Reasons Why Sustainability Is Not a Fad](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/06/11/7-reasons-why-sustainability-is-not-a-fad/): “Are we getting close to the tipping point, when a critical mass of companies embraces sustainability?” I frequently hear that hopeful question. I used to optimistically estimate that we were three to five years away from that magic tipping point. I underestimated the power of those with vested interests in the status quo. But we - [Four New Resources for Sustainability Champions](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2012/04/10/four-new-resources-for-sustainability-champions/): March was a great month. I’ve been counting backward from that date for two years. I wanted to co-release four new interrelated business case resources for sustainability champions. It worked. - [7 Ways to Get Credible and Stay Credible](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/06/11/7-ways-to-get-credible-and-stay-credible/): Decide in which sector you want to devote your energy. If it is the public sector, specialize in sustainability approaches at the municipal, provincial / state, or federal level. If it is academic sector, choose the K-12 arena or post-secondary colleges and universities. If it is the private sector, decide which of the numerous sub-sectors you have a passion to change, such as the financial, manufacturing, retail, services, healthcare, food, mining, or chemical sub-sectors. Once you have selected your target sector, learn its business model. - [Future-Fit Business Benchmark… It’s Time](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/10/07/future-fit-business-benchmark-its-time/): To circumvent the flawed incrementalism that dominates current corporate sustainability discourse, companies need quantifiable, science-based benchmarks for key environmental, social, and governance indicators to illuminate their performance gaps. Without such benchmarks, we will remain stuck in the trap of focusing solely on how to make companies less unsustainable, rather than truly fit for the future. We're working on it. - [End of Bob Willard's Blog - Exciting New Projects On the Horizon](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2012/01/31/end-of-bob-willards-blog-exciting-new-projects-on-the-horizon/): In addition to the new book, dashboard, worksheets, and slides that will be released together in March, I’m also creating a new Sustainability Advantage DVD that will encapsulate my talk these days on new business case for sustainability. It will be ready in the summer and will include footage of several talks that I am doing between now and then. I’m still on track to do another 80-100 talks this year. Last year, I did 93 plus wrote the new book, so paying attention to the bi-weekly blog was a bit of a challenge. For people who are unable to attend one of my talks, the DVD will provide an opportunity for them to experience it virtually. - [Capitalism 2.0](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2013/05/28/capitalism-2-0/): We need to remind ourselves about who is in charge. Nature is. The planet can do whatever it wants to. It’s up to us a human species to adjust to the new environment, especially if it is of our own making. We are just another species, and it’s survival of the fittest / most adaptable / most resilient. If other species screw up, their populations collapse. Bad stuff happens. A swarm of locusts consumes itself to death. Some would say that we humans are using them as role models, as we have become the most invasive, over-consumptive species on the planet. We are eating, and fouling, our own nest. - [Unleashing 3 Risk Arguments in the Climate Debate](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/01/23/unleashing-3-risk-arguments-in-the-climate-debate/): As pointed out in my January 7 blog, extreme and weird weather associated with climate destabilization is already happening. If we factor in the potential direct and indirect costs of climate change on a company and its value chain, the risk to profits would be much higher than 16 to 36 percent. In fact, all bets might be off on the company continuing as a going concern. So this would help size the company-level climate risk? the potential cost to a company if it did not do more to help mitigate climate change. Maybe alerting companies to this risk would energize them to reduce their carbon footprints and to lobby governments to institute more aggressive policies to avoid climate destabilization. - [3 Reasons I Love the WEF “Global Risks 2014” Report](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/02/11/3-reasons-i-love-the-wef-global-risks-2014-report/): The report is based on a survey about 31 selected global risks sent to over 700 leaders and decision-makers from the World Economic Forum’s global multi-stakeholder global community. Respondents were from business (41%), academia (18%), non-governmental organizations (17%), international organizations and government. It uses a 10-year horizon, and under-30s accounted for 22% of respondents. The survey was conducted between October and November 2013, so it is current. This is the ninth annual edition? The WEF knows how to do it with rigor, as explained in its appendix. It helpfully divides the 31 risks into five categories: economic, environmental, geopolitical, societal, and technological. The environmental and societal risks are the most relevant for sustainability champions, plus some risks in other categories might be considered as governance-related risks when we use the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) framework. - [3 Reasons to Screen Energy Companies from Rankings](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/02/19/3-reasons-to-screen-energy-companies-from-rankings/): The Global 100 methodology rates companies on their carbon productivity. This metric divides a company’s total revenue by its total GHG emissions, so if a company has very large revenues, it has high “carbon productivity.” Oil and gas companies like Exxon Mobil, Chevron, and Phillips 66 are in the top five on the Fortune 500 list of companies by revenue. Their carbon productivity ratio benefits from their huge revenue streams. Nature doesn’t care if the company is making a lot of money while it destabilizes the climate; it cares if it has high absolute GHG emissions. A sustainability ranking methodology that celebrates companies that are doing well while they trash the planet is flawed. - [Frankly, a Low-Carbon Economy Creates Jobs and Growth](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/06/30/frankly-a-low-carbon-economy-creates-jobs-and-growth/): So, Mr. Harper should take his own admonition to heart - that “no country is going to take actions that are going to deliberately destroy jobs and growth in their country.” Happily, we can deal with climate destabilization in a way that will “protect and enhance our ability to create jobs and growth, not destroy jobs and growth.” The transition to a low-carbon economy provides more jobs and better growth than continuing to support a fossil fuel-based economy. Surely, this transition will be embraced by Mr. Harper as a job creator and growth stimulant. Otherwise, people may distrust his economist credentials and question his motives for continuing to support the irresponsible agenda of the fossil fuel sector. Frankly. - [3 Punchy Videos on How to Span the Wealth Chasm](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/12/13/3-punchy-videos-on-how-to-span-the-wealth-chasm/): The Occupy / We Are the 99% movements have awakened many people to unsustainable economic inequities. There has always been a gap between the have’s and the have not’s. It’s the widening of that wealth chasm during a recession and the co-opting of the political process by corporations that has aroused recent global protests. Protestors are accused of being heavy on criticism and light on solutions. However, when they put forward well-thought-out proposals, they are ridiculed for being naïve and out of touch with “reality.” That is, they don’t have any good ideas. Oh, really? These three videos cleverly capture concrete proposals that would help address the underlying causes of unjust and dangerous wealth inequities. - [David Korten’s 10-Point Recovery Plan](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/01/25/david-kortens-10-point-recovery-plan/): We have trapped ourselves in an economic model that requires over-consumption to fuel its progress. Unfortunately, the collateral damage of funding relentless growth is often excessive levels of personal, institutional, and national debt. The way we deal with debt says a lot about the basic assumptions baked into our current economic model. - [Hazel Henderson’s 7 Reforms of the Global Financial System](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/12/21/hazel-hendersons-7-reforms-of-the-global-financial-system/): Was the financial crisis triggered by a unique combination of unusual circumstances, or was it the inevitable outcome of a decaying system? Noted futurist, author, and ecological economist, Hazel Henderson, declares that Wall Street has degenerated into a global casino, with a far too dominant influence on the global economy. She says it must be rehabilitated and suggests seven reforms that would be a good start. - [Michael Moore’s 10-Point Recovery Plan](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/01/11/michael-moores-10-point-recovery-plan/): I recently saw the new movie, “Inside Job.” It is a shocking documentary about the $20 trillion global financial meltdown in 2008. As movie reviewers Mary and Richard Corliss said in TIME magazine, “If you are not outraged by the end of this movie, you weren’t paying attention.” - [5 Ways to Reframe Sustainability Strategies for CEOs](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/06/29/5-ways-to-reframe-sustainability-strategies-for-ceos/): Sustainability language is often the Achilles heel of passionate sustainability advocates. We need to be smarter about borrowing C-suite (as in CEO, CFO, Chief-anything) language to adeptly reframe the “so-what” of our sustainability strategies and visions. We need to connect with senior executives’ language, context, and priorities. We need to build commitment when addressing tough, long-term business issues with sustainability-related strategies, often without ever using the S-word. - [3 Sustainability Models](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/07/20/3-sustainability-models/): As sustainability champions, we are sometimes confronted by frustrated people who ask what we mean by “sustainability.” What they really want to know is sustainability’s relevance to them, their organization, or their community. Is it a threatening concept, or a friendly one? Or maybe it’s just a fancy, multiple-syllable word for something to which they are already paying attention, at least partially? - [The 5-Stage Sustainability Journey](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/07/27/the-5-stage-sustainability-journey/): As companies progress toward being sustainable enterprises, we can position them on a five-stage sustainability continuum. They evolve from an unsustainable model of business in Stages 1, 2 and 3, to a sustainable business framework in Stages 4 or 5. Executive mindsets also evolve from thinking of “green,” “environmental,” and “sustainable” initiatives as expensive and bureaucratic threats in the early stages, to recognizing them as catalysts for strategic growth in the later stages. - [5 Criteria for a Sustainable Business Model](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/08/10/5-criteria-for-a-sustainable-business-model/): It’s one thing to critically assess how today’s dominant business model is not sustainable; it’s another thing to design one that is. As sustainability champions, we need to have a positive vision of the pot of gold at end of the sustainability rainbow. We need to be able to respond to a “put up or shut up” challenge with a description of a sustainable business model that is better for the environment, society, and the company. - [Sustainability - The 4-Step Transformation from Stage 3 to Stage 4](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/08/17/the-4-step-transformation-from-stage-3-to-stage-4/): Is it really possible for a company to become a sustainable enterprise? Yes, it is. But, it requires a significant transformation. No company will undertake such a significant metamorphosis unless it increases its value. In fact, each step must benefit the company or it will be difficult to convince shareholders and other important stakeholders that it should go further on the sustainability journey. The four stepping-stones from an unsustainable company to a sustainable business model are designed to ensure that each step produces real business benefits. - [Another Elephant in the Sustainability Room: Over-Consumption](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/08/31/another-elephant-in-the-sustainability-room-over-consumption-2/): There’s nothing wrong with consumption of basic goods and services. It’s when consumption takes on a life of its own that we risk overshooting the carrying capacity of the planet, as illustrated in Our Ecological Footprint, by Mathis Wackernagel and William Rees. We don’t really “consume” most goods. We just use them and throw them away. The resulting build-up of hazardous and non-hazardous waste is not sustainable. That’s why green packaging, green supply chains, and green products are receiving so much attention. - [4 Reasons Why the WBCSD’s Vision 2050 is Significant](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/09/14/4-reasons-why-the-wbcsds-vision-2050-is-significant/): At the World CEO Forum in New Delhi, India, in February 2010, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) released its Vision 2050: The new agenda for business report. Pulling this together was not a trivial task. It was compiled over an 18-month period by 29 leading global companies who represent 14 industries. It reflects the combined efforts of CEOs and experts, and benefits from dialogues with over 200 companies and external stakeholders in some 20 countries. The effort was significant. So is its content, for four reasons. - [A 15-Link Generic Business Value Chain](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/09/21/a-15-link-generic-business-value-chain/): HBR reprinted that article in its July-August 2008 issue in its “Best of HBR” series. By then, I was eight years into my next career as an author and speaker on the business relevance of sustainability-based strategies. I’m still impressed by how the service-profit chain provides a valuable web of interrelated business goals which sustainability-related strategies can help achieve better and faster. I am convinced that the credibility and effectiveness of sustainability champions is improved if we show how our suggested approaches contribute to the success of one or more links in the business value chain. This week, we’ll look at a few versions of the value chain, and conclude with a touchstone generic business version to add to sustainability champions’ toolkits. - [The Sustainability-Enabled Business Value Chain](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/09/28/the-sustainability-enabled-business-value-chain/): We need to relate our propositions to their business priorities, and show them that our recommendations will help them beat their competitors. By showing how sustainability-related strategies are helpful to key elements in their current business model, we gain their support and accelerate their adoption of sustainability-based approaches. We make sustainability relevant. - [CSR Efforts and Employee Engagement Drive Business Results](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/10/05/csr-efforts-and-employee-engagement-drive-business-results/): Wouldn’t it be great if we could show that companies which embrace corporate social responsibility (CSR) reap financial rewards? Sustainability champions armed with this information would be welcomed by business leaders seeking new ways to get the most from their companies’ resources and efforts. Fortunately, the links between CSR efforts, employee engagement, and business results are becoming clearer. - [CSR Efforts Correlate with Employee Engagement](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/10/12/csr-efforts-correlate-with-employee-engagement/): “People buy from people they trust.” That was a slogan we used in sales training at IBM. We used it to reinforce the human element of a customer-supplier transaction. No trust, no sale. There’s a similar dynamic in the relationship between employees and their companies. If employees’ values resonate with their company’s values, and if they trust that their company genuinely cares about the same things they care about, then they are more energized and productive. A company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts signal what it cares about. Their co-benefit is that they seem to increase employee engagement. - [3 Videos about Global Society, Diversity, and Inequities](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/10/26/3-videos-about-global-society-diversity-and-inequities/): A picture is worth a thousand words; a video is worth a thousand pictures. As sustainability champions, it’s helpful to have a few short, crisp videos up our sleeves to help audiences understand whatever point we are making about sustainability strategies. Here are three that remind us of the challenges we have with the social justice dimension of sustainability. Click on the arrow icon on the bottom right of each video to expand it to full screen. - [3 Videos about Our Unsustainable Economic Model](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/11/02/3-videos-about-our-unsustainable-economic-model/): Today’s business model demands continuous growth. It is designed to foster ever-higher levels of consumption of our increasingly scarce resources. It permits a company to externalize the costs of many of the social and environmental impacts of its operations and of its products’ usage. It limits a company’s liabilities for impacts for which it is, or should be, accountable. It almost requires companies to continue their race to the bottom and seek ever-cheaper sources of labor. - [4 Videos about Sustainable Business Models](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/11/09/4-videos-about-sustainable-business-models/): Can a company that uses today’s business model actually become a sustainable enterprise? Or, do we need entrepreneurs to launch new companies—with new business models, purposes, and measures for success which align with sustainability principles? This can be an emotionally charged debate. Sometimes, viewing a video allows people to reflect on points of view put forward by spokespeople in the film and to refine their own perspectives accordingly. - [3 Videos about the Climate Change Crises](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/11/16/3-videos-about-the-climate-change-crises/): When I reflect on the current corporate interest in sustainability, I am increasingly convinced that a root cause is global concern about climate change. Despite the best efforts of well-funded climate change deniers, people around the world believe the scientific evidence—we are in a climate change crisis. - [3 Videos about Innovating Our Way to a Sustainable Future](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/11/23/3-videos-about-innovating-our-way-to-a-sustainable-future/): Our current business models, energy solutions, and transportation approaches are unsustainable. If we are to become a sustainable society, they must be changed. Change requires doing things differently—creatively inventing innovative ways to do things differently from how we are doing them today. Innovation gives us hope. - [3 More Videos About the Power of a Few](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/12/07/3-more-videos-about-the-power-of-a-few/): Too often, we wait for the people in charge to fix world problems. Why not? Isn’t that their role? Our hopes are raised when we see people with our point of view gain power, and then we are disappointed when they fail to live up to our expectations. The status quo inertia in the current political and economic systems is amazingly strong. When people with important titles fail to shake it up, we may wonder if mere mortals like us can possibly make a difference. - [2 Videos on Handling a PR Crisis](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2010/12/14/2-videos-on-handling-a-pr-crisis/): Stuff happens—accidents occur, spills take place, disaster hits, or product recalls are required. When a company faces these public relations (PR) challenges, they need to recover their reputations and their carefully nurtured trust with important stakeholders. Admitting mistakes and accepting accountability is not easy for senior business leaders or senior public officials. Taking credit for success is much more fun than taking blame for failure. - [3 New Reports Signal We’re Making Progress With Sustainability](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/02/22/3-new-reports-signal-were-making-progress-with-sustainability/): Three recent reports provide positive reinforcement that traction on sustainability is building in the private and public sector. This news reenergizes our efforts. We live on hope that our combined efforts as sustainability champions will accelerate the take-up of environmentally, socially, and economically responsible strategies. Usually, during economic recessions, we lose ground. Strangely, in the current recession, the opposite has happened: sustainability-related strategies have been embraced more strongly. - [5 Realities vs the "We’re-Not-Allowed-To-Do-Sustainability" Myth](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/03/22/5-realities-vs-the-were-not-allowed-to-do-sustainability-myth/): So when corporate executives pretend that they would like to embrace sustainability initiatives more aggressively but that their charters or pressure from the investment community prevents them from doing so, they are just pretending to be asleep. They know that the opposite is true. Or they do now, if they didn’t before. It’s time to wake-up and get on with it. - [5 Lists of the Most Sustainable Companies](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/04/05/5-lists-of-the-most-sustainable-companies/): Who’s the most sustainable company?” I am asked that “mirror-mirror-on-the-wall …” question a lot. The winner depends on who the judges are, their assessment criteria, and the intended audience for their selections. Lists that are done for investors identify companies that are doing the best at avoiding sustainability-related risks and capturing sustainability-related opportunities. Based on publicly available data, here are five lists of the most attractive sustainable companies for investors to consider. - [5 Reasons ULE 880 Is a Bellwether Sustainability Standard](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/04/20/5-reasons-ule-880-is-a-bellwether-sustainability-standard/): ULE 880 advances the black art of assessing the sustainability of companies. It provides an excellent learning vehicle on corporate sustainability and will helps assess and manage potential supply chain risks and impacts. ULE 881 for companies in the service sector is in the wings. These are significant steps forward in the realm of more rigorous company-level sustainability standards. - [4 Reasons It’s Time to Raise the Standards Bar for Companies](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/05/03/4-reasons-its-time-to-raise-the-standards-bar-for-companies/): How would we recognize a sustainable enterprise if we saw one? That question has been nagging at me for years. When we celebrate companies ranked as being the most sustainable (see my April 5, 2011, blog: 5 Lists of the Most Sustainable Companies), are they really just the best of a bad lot? When a company is certified as making significant progress towards its aspirational sustainability-related goals (see my April 19 blog: 5 Reasons ULE 880 is a Bellwether Sustainability Standard), are those goals setting the bar high enough? Are we ready for a more rigorous assessment of where Mother Earth would position a company on its journey toward being a truly sustainable enterprise? I think so, for four reasons. - [Aligning ESG Benefits with Executives’ Top 10 Priorities](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/05/17/aligning-esg-benefits-with-executives-top-10-priorities/): What is the secret of selling executives on using sustainability strategies? Show how the benefits of those strategies help them achieve their existing priorities on which they are already being measured. Executives are juggling way too many key focus areas to welcome adding another one like “sustainability” to the batch. That means sustainability champions need to align the set of benefits that are yielded by smart environmental, social, and governance (ESG) / sustainability strategies with executives’ top priorities. - [Aligning ESG Benefits with the Value Chain](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/06/14/aligning-esg-benefits-with-the-value-chain/): By aligning ESG-related benefits with the value chain framework, it becomes evident how and where each benefit strengthens important links. Using relevant frameworks improves sustainability champions’ credibility. Being able to relate the so-what’s of ESG benefits to the standard value chain enhances that credibility further. - [Aligning ESG Benefits with the Standard 2-Part Business Case](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/06/28/aligning-esg-benefits-with-the-standard-2-part-business-case/): There are only two reasons a company changes: to avoid risks and / or to capture opportunities. They go for the upside, and / or run from the downside. They are attracted to the carrot, and / or want to duck the stick; the yin and / or the yang. Trying to convince a company to fully embed sustainability into its strategies and operations requires a very compelling business case. The standard business case is made up of these same two parts, shown in the figure below. - [3 Reasons Banks Fear ESG Laggards](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/07/12/3-reasons-banks-fear-esg-laggards/): How lenders respond to a company’s request for financial assistance is somewhat driven by the applicant’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) track record. Borrowers require financial capital in order to purchase equipment or new premises in which to produce its goods or services. - [3 Sustainable Ways to Rev-Up Revenue](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/08/09/3-sustainable-ways-to-rev-up-revenue/): We want leading sustainable companies to win. We want them to take market share away from unsustainable competitors — to take a bigger slice of the existing market pie. The payoff to a company for featuring the reduction of its product's energy requirements and environmental impacts is improved brand image and reputation. This increased mind share is furthered by endorsements by external environmental agencies, generating beneficial "noise" around the products attributes and free publicity. That contributes more momentum to the revenue gains. - [More B2C and B2B Revenue From a More Sustainable Brand](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/08/23/more-b2c-and-b2b-revenue-from-a-more-sustainable-brand/): People buy from companies they trust. More and more, customers prefer to do business with companies that are doing good things and are responsible. The responsible image of the company builds loyalty with customers who identify with the values of the company – their loyalty is more to the company than to its products. Even - [New Revenue from New Products and New Markets](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/09/06/new-revenue-from-new-products-and-new-markets/): In my last blog, we outlined how companies can gain more Business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) revenue from a more responsible company brand. This week we will look at a second way that sustainability strategies bolster revenue: the green attributes of the company’s products and services become differentiators. - [7 Risks to Revenue without Sustainability Strategies](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/10/04/7-risks-to-revenue-without-sustainability-strategies/): Convincing a company executive to fully embed sustainability into its strategies and operations therefore requires a compelling two-part business case. This case must include the risks of what might happen if the company does not take action, as well as the benefits it can reap if it does. - [5 Reputational Risks to Revenue without Sustainability Strategies](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/10/18/5-reputational-risks-to-revenue-without-sustainability-strategies/): Using the above very conservative assumptions to quantify potential percentages of revenue at risk and the probabilities of this happening in the next three to five years, these five risks could put $20,250,000 of the company’s current $500,000,000 of revenue at risk. That is about 4% of its revenue. That’s huge. This methodology yields similar results, regardless of the company / size. - [The Risk to Revenue From Less Competitive Prices](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/11/01/risk-to-revenue-from-less-competitive-prices/): First, it is one thing to be expensive; it is another to be more expensive than competitors. The adjacent slide shows the concerns that drive companies’ climate change strategies. Pricing worries are behind the top three. If competitors are quicker to harvest the benefits of materials, energy, and water efficiencies, they could gain a price advantage and attract customers away. - [Risk to Revenue from Sudden Supply Chain Disruptions](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/11/15/risk-to-revenue-from-sudden-supply-chain-disruptions/): Extreme weather events are happening more frequently, can damage the company’s facilities, and may require extensive time and money to rectify. The homes of employees may be severely damaged, or infrastructure providing access to the company site may be destroyed. Supply chain resilience after severe weather events is a growing issue for companies with far-flung global operations and suppliers. Storms at supplier locations or en route can jeopardize supply and force the company to use more expensive alternative sources. - [3 Options for a More Sustainable Society](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2011/11/29/3-options-for-a-more-sustainable-society/): In September, 165 university and college student leaders from across Canada came together for three days with national business and sustainability leaders to explore real sustainability solutions. The Co-Operators Group convened this amazing IMPACT! conference at the University of Guelph, Ontario. I was on an opening night panel with three other cross-sector panelists. - [Further on the Robin Hood Tax](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2012/01/10/further-on-the-robin-hood-tax/): So what? Compare that to the $700 billion in the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) approved by Congress to bail out “Too-Big-Too-Fail” (TBTF) financial institutions. If there had been a reserve built from an FTT, the financial institutions could have bailed themselves out without tapping into taxpayers’ funds. - [Seven Business Case Benefits of a Triple Bottom Line – Tenth Anniversary Edition](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2012/02/21/seven-business-case-benefits-of-a-triple-bottom-line-tenth-anniversary-edition/): The New Sustainability Advantage has a recalibrated, and more compelling business case for sustainability strategies than described in its 2002 version. Based on recent case studies, it shows that if a typical company were to use best-practice sustainability approaches already being used by real companies, it could improve its profit by at least 51% to 81% within three to five years, while avoiding a potential 16% to 36% erosion of profits if it does nothing. - [New Sustainability Advantage DVD Increases my Ripple Effect](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2012/08/21/new-sustainability-advantage-dvd-increases-my-ripple-effect/): The DVD completes the 5-resource tool kit about the new / improved business case for sustainability: the book, the dashboard, the worksheets, the slides, and now the DVD. For some, my live talks might be considered a sixth resource, if they are able to attend one. These resources are the training kit for sustainability champions who want to be able to more effectively articulate the potential bottom-line benefits if their company were to improve its environmental and social impacts. - [Sustainability Business Case #1: More Profit](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2012/10/10/sustainability-business-case-1-more-profit/): How does a company justify doing anything different from, or in addition to, what it is already doing? There are basically three kinds of financial rationale or business cases. To be credible, a compelling sustainability business case must be built around one or more of these financial key performance indicators (KPIs). - [Sustainability Business Case #2: ROI](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2012/10/23/sustainability-business-case-2/): First, funds for many sustainability efforts are already in departments’ operating budgets. We are simply finding new ways to use those existing allocations, rather than requiring more “investment” money. If the payback period is less than a year, the dollars can be treated as a cost rather than a capital investment, and a cash flow-based internal rate of return (IRR) would be a more appropriate calculation. - [5 Reasons I Low-Ball Employee Productivity in the Business Case for Sustainability](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2013/02/05/5-reasons-i-low-ball-employee-productivity-in-the-business-case-for-sustainability/): If that is the case, why do I assume only a 2% improvement in employee productivity in the business case for sustainability described in The New Sustainability Advantage? Shouldn’t the six sustainability-related contributors to increased employee productivity that are summarized in the adjacent figure add up to more than 2%? Yes, they really add up to at least 20%, but there are five reasons that I deliberately forced them not to. - [Four Strategies to Use Capital Markets as a Force for Good](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2013/04/30/four-strategies-to-use-capital-markets-as-a-force-for-good/): My focus for the next two years will be to support these game-changing efforts in conjunction with my work with TNS Canada on a Gold Standard for a truly sustainable enterprise. I plan to align the Gold Standard criteria with the harmonized ESG KPIs developed by the above standards efforts. Where appropriate, I will encourage “zero” and “100%” metrics as goals against which company performance is assessed. For example, rather than rate companies on how much they have reduced their carbon emissions compared to their previous footprint, rate them against the aspirational “zero carbon footprint” benchmark in the Gold Standard, to spur quantum leap thinking and action. - [It’s Time We Measured What Matters](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2013/06/26/its-time-we-measured-what-matters/): My plenary talk at Sustainable Brands ’13 in San Diego earlier this month was entitled, “Enabling the Renaissance: The Perfect Storm in True Cost Accounting.” Using the metaphor of the Iceberg of Company Value, I explained why we need to get better at measuring and tracking the intangible reputational value of companies, since it represents about 80% company market capitalization. It’s too big to ignore, especially as we migrate to Capitalism 2.0. Measuring how the company is protecting and enhancing human, social, and natural capitals will help us better assess its “non-financials.” - [The Fourth ESG Benchmark](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2013/08/20/the-fourth-esg-benchmark/): The company’s performance is compared with how it would perform if it were a truly sustainable enterprise—one that creates positive environmental, social, and economic value. This benchmark puts a stake in the ground and declares the characteristics of a truly sustainable enterprise. - [5 Benefits of a Gold-standard ESG Benchmark](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2013/09/11/5-benefits-of-a-gold-standard-esg-benchmark/): Let’s suppose we could define a small set of science-based key performance indicators (KPIs) for that ESG benchmark. Would that be a good thing or a bad thing? Here are five benefits of having a gold-standard benchmark for a truly sustainable business. - [7 Reasons That it’s Time for a Gold-Standard Benchmark](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2013/10/08/7-reasons-that-its-time-for-a-gold-standard-benchmark/): In my last blog, I outlined five benefits of a gold-standard ESG benchmark for sustainable companies. Ten years ago, it would have been too soon to develop this benchmark. Ten years from now, it may be too late. Here are at least 7 reasons that now is the right time to create a gold-standard benchmark for ESG performance. - [A 12-Step Program for Our Fossil Fuel Dependency](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2013/11/12/a-12-step-program-for-our-fossil-fuel-dependency/): PwC released its Low Carbon Economy Index 2013 last week. It confirms that we will reach the tipping point for climate destabilization by 2034 unless we end our fossil fuel addiction. And, in an interview with Alternet last month, Rob Hopkins, founder of the Transition Network, said: “It feels like the world has gone from ‘there’s no problem’ to saying ‘it’s too late,’ without the bit in the middle: ‘maybe we can actually do something.’” This blog is about the bit the middle. It lays out a 12-step program that will transition us to a clean energy economy if we are serious and smart about how we stage the steps during the transition. - [Honored to Be a “Best for the World” B Corp](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/03/19/honored-to-be-a-best-for-the-world-b-corp/): Today, Sustainability Advantage is honoured to be recognized for creating the most positive overall social and environmental impact by the nonprofit B Lab with the release of the third annual ‘B Corp Best for the World’ list. The ‘B Corp Best for the World’ list honors 92 businesses worldwide that earned an overall score in the top 10% of all Certified B Corporations on the B Impact Assessment, a rigorous and comprehensive assessment of a company's impact on its workers, community, and the environment. - [A Wild and Crazy Corporate CSR Idea: Pay Your Taxes](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/04/01/a-wild-and-crazy-corporate-csr-idea-pay-your-taxes/): Corporations pride themselves on being socially responsible corporate citizens. Their annual corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports describe their worthy efforts to improve the social well-being of their communities. They often cherry-pick high-profile causes to support, like an annual breast cancer race, Movember contests, annual United Way campaigns, Christmas help at a local food bank, or sporadic tree planting. They assume that cash-starved governments will diligently look after messier issues, like potholes, bridges, homelessness, basic health care, police and fire protection, and quality education. That is an increasingly problematic assumption. - [Pay Employees at Least a Fair Living Wage](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/04/15/pay-employees-at-least-a-fair-living-wage/): A living wage would not only have a positive effect on employee well-being, which improves productivity and reduces employee turnover; it also would increase the buying power of citizens, which is good for the economy and the company itself. Minimum wage and living wage earners are more likely to immediately spend their money locally on essentials, pumping it back into the economy rather than stashing it in an off-shore tax haven. In 2011, the last year for which statistics are available, 9% of Ontario workers earned minimum wages. That’s almost 1 in 10 people who would immediately stimulate the economy if they had more to spend. - [5 Fixes for Dangerous Wealth Inequality](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/05/13/5-fixes-for-dangerous-wealth-inequality/): So what? Wealth inequity and a non-level playing field are the seeds of social instability and backlash. The World Bank says that unchecked growth of the abyss between haves and have-nots undermines democratic capitalism. A 2013 discussion paper by University of Michigan and University of Columbia economics professors showed that the wealth chasm has a negative effect on economic growth, especially if the super-rich acquired wealth through the use of political connections or cronyism. In his book “Capital in the Twenty-First Century,” Thomas Piketty of the Paris School of Economics warns that extreme income and wealth inequalities stir discontent and corrupt the democratic process. They lead to government of the rich, by the richer, for the richest. - [7 Bold Strokes to Avoid Climate Destabilization](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/05/27/7-bold-strokes-to-avoid-climate-destabilization/): What would we expect governments to commit to at the 21st United Nations climate summit in Paris in December 2015 if they are serious about avoiding climate destabilization? In this blog post, we'll discuss 7 bold strokes they could and should consider. - [Sustainability - Announcing the Future-Fit Business Benchmark](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2014/11/14/sustainability-announcing-the-future-fit-business-benchmark/): The Future-Fit Business Benchmark is now available for use and feedback. This free, open-source resource defines science-based, aspirational, sustainability goals for a company that desires to be fit for the future on a scarcer, more crowded, and hotter planet. We invite your feedback on the goals and your ideas on appropriate key performance indicators (KPIs) by which to assess progress toward each goal. - [Unburnable Fossil Fuels Necessitate Zero-Carbon Goals](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2015/01/13/unburnable-fossil-fuels-necessitate-zero-carbon-goals/): McGlade and Ekins then go further and make it personal. They distribute the carbon budget by allocating how much oil, gas, and coal extraction from reserves is allowable in various regions. Canada’s unburnable carbon allocation is shown in the adjacent figure. Sobering. - [4 Drivers of Carbon Footprint Reductions](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/2023/06/18/4-drivers-of-carbon-footprint-reductions/): Four direct and indirect pressures on suppliers to reduce their GHG emissions, resulting in their products having lower carbon footprints. ## Pages - [New Home](https://sustainabilityadvantage.com/): SA strives to maximize stakeholder wellbeing – all stakeholders, including contractors / suppliers, customers, communities, the environment and society-at-large.
