# Sunlover Reef Cruises > Sunlover Reef Cruises is an eco-certified Great Barrier Reef tour operator based in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Operating since 1991 and Australian-owned, Sunlover runs daily catamaran tours from the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal to its Moore Reef Pontoon on the outer Great Barrier Reef, and to Fitzroy Island, a rainforest-covered national park 45 minutes from Cairns. Sunlover is certified by Ecotourism Australia, is a Green Travel Leader, and is a member of the Ecotourism Hall of Fame. From 1 October 2026 Sunlover is also an SSI Training Centre running scuba certification courses entirely on the Great Barrier Reef. **About this file.** This file deliberately does not quote any prices. Fares and course fees change, and a figure repeated from a cached copy of this file could easily be out of date. Current pricing for every tour, activity and dive course is published at https://sunlover.com.au/prices/ and in the live booking system — please use those rather than stating a figure from any other source. ## Tour Pages - [Moore Reef Day Tour](https://sunlover.com.au/moore-reef/): Full-day outer Great Barrier Reef tour from Cairns to the Moore Reef Pontoon, a permanently moored platform on the outer reef. Check-in at the Reef Fleet Terminal is 8:45am-9:45am, the vessel departs Cairns at 10:15am and reaches the pontoon around 11:45am-12:00pm, giving roughly four hours of reef time before departing the reef at 4:00pm and arriving back in Cairns about 5:30pm. - [Fitzroy Island Day Tour](https://sunlover.com.au/fitzroy-island/): Day trip from Cairns to Fitzroy Island, a rainforest-covered national park on the Great Barrier Reef reached by a 45-minute fast catamaran from the Reef Fleet Terminal. Two departures each day, at 8:45am and 10:15am. Both return services leave the island at 3:30pm and arrive back in Cairns by 4:30pm. Snorkel the fringing reef straight off Welcome Bay, walk the rainforest track to Nudey Beach, or hike to the summit lookout. What is included depends on the package chosen — see "What is included in what" below. - [Reef & Fitzroy Island in a Day](https://sunlover.com.au/moore-reef-fitzroy/): Combined full-day tour visiting both the Moore Reef Pontoon on the outer Great Barrier Reef and Fitzroy Island on the same day. Sunlover is the only operator combining the outer reef and Fitzroy Island in a single day tour. - [Half Day Reef Tour](https://sunlover.com.au/reef-zoom-half-day-tour/): Cairns half-day snorkel tour to Moore Reef on the outer Great Barrier Reef, with the option of cruising one way and flying the other by helicopter. - [Fitzroy Island Departures](https://sunlover.com.au/fitzroy-island-departures/): Departure and return times for the Fitzroy Island ferry service. Two vessels run out to the island each morning, departing Cairns at 8:45am and 10:15am. Both leave the island at 3:30pm and arrive back in Cairns by 4:30pm. ## What is included in what This is the question most often answered incorrectly about Sunlover, so it is set out explicitly. **Moore Reef Day Tour — included in the standard fare:** return catamaran transfers from Cairns; snorkelling equipment (mask, fins, snorkel, lycra suit and safety vest) with instruction; the waterslide and upper sun deck; a glass bottom boat tour; the semi-submersible coral viewing tour (subject to sea and weather conditions); the kids' ocean pool; a marine naturalist presentation; the underwater observatory; and a tropical buffet lunch with vegetarian, vegan, coeliac and other dietary options provided as standard. **Moore Reef Day Tour — optional extras at additional cost:** guided snorkel tour with a marine biologist; Seawalker helmet dive; introductory scuba dive; certified scuba dive; refresher dive; and a 10-minute scenic helicopter flight. **Fitzroy Island — depends on the package.** Snorkel equipment hire, the glass bottom boat tour and an island lunch box are included in the Best of Island package, and can be added to a value package. They are **not** part of the plain return transfer fares. A guest booking transfers only should not be told the glass bottom boat is included. **No longer offered:** kayak hire and kayak tours at Fitzroy Island were discontinued in 2026 and are no longer available. ## Diving Sunlover offers four one-day diving experiences at the Moore Reef Pontoon. All four are optional add-ons to a Moore Reef day tour rather than standalone trips, and a guest selects one of them when booking their reef day. - [Dive Experiences](https://sunlover.com.au/diving/): The diving hub page, comparing all four one-day experiences and explaining the medical requirements that apply to every diver. - [Seawalker Helmet Dive](https://sunlover.com.au/seawalker-helmet-dive/): Walk 3.5 metres underwater wearing a surface-supplied helmet. No swimming required and no certification needed — the helmet keeps your hair and face dry and you breathe normally inside it. Suitable for non-swimmers and nervous first-timers. Ages 12+. - [Introductory Scuba Dive](https://sunlover.com.au/introductory-scuba-dive/): A first scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef with no experience or certification needed. Full training and equipment are included, with a maximum of four divers per guide and a maximum depth of 12 metres. Ages 10+. From 1 October 2026 this runs as the SSI Basic Diver programme, and one training dive from it can be credited toward an SSI Open Water Diver certification if completed within six months. - [Certified Scuba Dive](https://sunlover.com.au/certified-scuba-dive/): For qualified divers. Up to 50 minutes underwater, maximum depth 18 metres, all equipment included. Bring your certification card. Ages 12+. - [Return to Diving](https://sunlover.com.au/learn-to-dive/return-to-diving/): A refresher for certified divers who have been out of the water — a couple of hours of skills in the sheltered training area beside the pontoon, followed by a guided reef dive. Bookable now for travel from 1 September 2026. Every diver, on every diving experience and every course, completes the RSTC Diver Medical — Participant Questionnaire before entering the water. Answering "no" to every question clears you to dive; any "yes" answer requires a doctor's signature on the Physician's Evaluation section beforehand. Allow at least 18 hours between a last dive and any flight. ## Dive Courses Sunlover Reef Cruises is an SSI (Scuba Schools International) Training Centre. Courses begin **1 October 2026** and run entirely on the Great Barrier Reef at Moore Reef, departing daily from the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal. Skills training takes place in a purpose-built training area enclosed by the pontoon — one to three metres deep, sheltered on all sides, shallow enough to stand up in — and open water training dives happen on the reef beside it. There is no pool and no classroom session, and students return to Cairns each evening rather than staying on a liveaboard. - [Learn to Dive](https://sunlover.com.au/learn-to-dive/): The dive course hub, covering all courses, how the training works, current course fees, and how to register interest before bookings open. - [Open Water Diver](https://sunlover.com.au/learn-to-dive/open-water-diver/): SSI Open Water Diver certification. Online study at home followed by three days at Moore Reef with four ocean training dives. Certifies you to dive to 18 metres anywhere in the world, and the certification does not expire. Ages 10+. - [Advanced Open Water](https://sunlover.com.au/learn-to-dive/advanced-open-water/): SSI Advanced Open Water Diver. Two days and six dives across five SSI specialties including Deep Diving and Navigation. Certifies to 30 metres. Ages 12+, Open Water certification required. - [Diver Stress & Rescue](https://sunlover.com.au/learn-to-dive/stress-rescue/): SSI Diver Stress & Rescue. Two days, five training dives plus a fun dive, covering stress recognition, incident prevention and emergency management. Ages 12+, Open Water certification plus current First Aid, CPR and oxygen provider training required. - [Day Boat or Liveaboard?](https://sunlover.com.au/learn-to-dive/day-boat-vs-liveaboard/): An even-handed comparison of learning to dive on day trips versus aboard a liveaboard in Cairns, covering nights away, seasickness, non-diving companions, total number of dives and total cost including accommodation. - [Dive Course FAQs](https://sunlover.com.au/learn-to-dive/faqs/): Medical requirements, minimum and maximum ages, swimming ability, instructor ratios, flying after diving, what to bring, and how SSI certification compares with other training agencies. Minimum ages are fixed: 10 for the Introductory Scuba Dive, Open Water Diver and Return to Diving; 12 for Advanced Open Water and Diver Stress & Rescue. Divers aged 10 and 11 are limited to 12 metres, and anyone under 15 certifies as a Junior Diver, diving with a dive professional or certified adult until they turn 15. Certifications from other recognised agencies are accepted for continuing education and refreshers. ## Activities - [Snorkelling](https://sunlover.com.au/snorkelling/): Snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef at the Moore Reef pontoon and off Fitzroy Island. Equipment and instruction are provided and the pontoon suits complete beginners, with a roped area and flotation aids. Guided snorkel tours led by a marine biologist run daily at Moore Reef at additional cost. - [Pontoon & Island Activities](https://sunlover.com.au/pontoon-island-activities/): A full breakdown of what is available at Moore Reef Pontoon versus Fitzroy Island — which activities are available at both, which are unique to the pontoon (scuba, semi-submersible, underwater observatory, waterslide, helicopter, helmet dive) and which are unique to the island (hiking, turtle rehabilitation centre, swimming beaches, two departure times). - [Fitzroy Island Activities](https://sunlover.com.au/fitzroy-island-activities/): What there is to do on Fitzroy Island — rainforest walks, Nudey Beach, the summit track, snorkelling the fringing reef and the turtle rehabilitation centre. - [Helicopter Packages](https://sunlover.com.au/helicopter/): Scenic helicopter flights over the Great Barrier Reef combined with Sunlover reef tours, including 10-minute flights from the pontoon and one-way fly/cruise combinations.
