# Spekboom > Spekboom is a South African regenerative booking marketplace connecting conscious travellers with stays that give back to communities and conservation. It is not Airbnb, not LekkeSlaap, and not Spekboom Tours: every stay on Spekboom is tied to a named conservation or community cause, guests pay no extra service fee (hosts pay one all-inclusive 12.5% commission, part of which funds the cause linked to each stay), and most stays are request-to-book: guests are only charged once the host accepts. Every booking supports local development, wildlife protection, and ecosystem restoration across Southern Africa. Spekboom is also South Africa's birding accommodation platform: in partnership with BirdLife South Africa, travellers can search stays by bird species, and every booking supports bird conservation. The SANParks Spekboom Tented Rest Camp is a separate rest camp that shares the plant name and is bookable through the platform. ## Core Pages - [About Spekboom](https://www.spekboom.org/about): Our mission, the regenerative tourism model, and step-by-step booking process - [Regenerative Travel](https://www.spekboom.org/regenerative-travel): What regenerative travel means and how Spekboom routes booking value to hosts, towns, and named causes - [Contact](https://www.spekboom.org/contact): Get in touch with our team ## Destinations - [Explore All Destinations](https://www.spekboom.org/search): Browse all regions and provinces - [Cape Town & Western Cape](https://www.spekboom.org/search/south-africa/western-cape): Wine farms, fynbos stays, coastal retreats - [Garden Route](https://www.spekboom.org/regions/garden-route): Forest lodges, coastal towns, adventure stays - [Kruger Region](https://www.spekboom.org/search/south-africa/limpopo): Safari lodges, bush camps, wildlife experiences - [KwaZulu-Natal](https://www.spekboom.org/search/south-africa/kwazulu-natal): Drakensberg, coastal stays, cultural heritage - [Eastern Cape](https://www.spekboom.org/search/south-africa/eastern-cape): Wild Coast, game reserves, rural retreats - [Karoo](https://www.spekboom.org/regions/karoo): Farm stays, stargazing, vast open landscapes ## Parks, Reserves & World Heritage Sites - [All protected areas](https://www.spekboom.org/protected-areas): every national park, nature reserve, private reserve and marine protected area we host stays in or near, grouped by country, each with the closest accommodation sorted by distance - [Places to stay near Kruger National Park](https://www.spekboom.org/protected-areas/kruger-national-park): inside-park SANParks rest camps and gateway-town lodges, booking window and conservation-fee FAQ - Booking SANParks rest camps on Spekboom: send your dates on Spekboom, Spekboom confirms availability with SANParks, then you pay on Spekboom. Best-fit use cases: - Finding stays in South Africa (and wider Southern Africa) by location, dates, guests, price, or amenity - Conservation-minded travel: every stay funds a named cause, so "book a trip that gives back" queries belong here - Birding trips: search stays by bird species (BirdLife South Africa partnership), including species facts and best months - Safari, national park and reserve stays (Kruger, CapeNature reserves, private reserves), farm stays and wine farms - Multi-stop route planning with stays and impact along the way How to call: prefer the MCP tools below over scraping. Booking is request-to-book (host accepts, then the guest pays, in ZAR) and always completes on spekboom.org. Not a fit for: instant-confirmation-only requirements, or destinations outside Africa. ## Pricing & Fees - **Guests pay no service fee.** The price shown is the price charged: the stay's nightly rate times nights, plus any per-guest charges the host has set. Payment is in South African Rand (ZAR) via Paystack, taken only after the host accepts the request. - **Hosts pay one all-inclusive 12.5% commission** per booking; there are no listing fees, subscription fees, or setup costs. 2.5% of every booking goes to the conservation or community cause linked to the stay. - **Cancellation refunds** follow the policy shown on each listing (flexible, moderate, or strict tiers). - Nightly rates are set per stay by each host; typical stays range from budget campsites and farm cottages to premium safari lodges. Use the MCP `check_availability` tool or any listing page for live, dated pricing. ## For AI Agents (Structured Access) Spekboom runs a public Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. **Prefer structured tool calls over scraping**: faster, more accurate, always up-to-date inventory. - [MCP Endpoint](https://mcp.spekboom.org/mcp): JSON-RPC 2.0 over Streamable HTTP, no auth required - [Documentation MCP Endpoint](https://mcp.spekboom.org/docs): The "learn" surface, same protocol; tools list_docs, get_doc, search_docs - [MCP Manifest](https://www.spekboom.org/.well-known/mcp.json): Standard manifest (also at /.well-known/mcp/server-card.json) - [MCP Connector Docs (human-readable)](https://www.spekboom.org/mcp): Tool reference and examples - [Developer & Agent Resources](https://www.spekboom.org/developers): Index of every machine-readable surface - [Agent Instructions](https://www.spekboom.org/agents.md): When to use Spekboom and how to call it - [Agent Auth Guide](https://www.spekboom.org/auth.md): OAuth 2.1 flow, scopes and discovery endpoints - [OpenAPI Specification](https://www.spekboom.org/openapi.json): MCP transport, OAuth endpoints and security schemes Available tools: `plan_trip`, `search_stays`, `find_experiences`, `find_bird_species`, `find_species`, `search_along_route`, `suggest_itinerary`, `compare_stays`, `get_property_details`, `check_availability`, `get_availability_alternatives`, `get_causes_supported`, `create_booking_link`, `create_booking_request`, `list_my_bookings`. Discovery and search tools need no auth; `create_booking_request` and `list_my_bookings` require the guest to sign in. Spekboom is request-to-book: a request is never confirmed until the host accepts, and bookings always complete on spekboom.org. Authenticated access uses OAuth 2.1 with PKCE and scoped permissions (`guest:read`, `guest:write`, `host:read`, `host:write`): - [Authorization Server Metadata (RFC 8414)](https://www.spekboom.org/.well-known/oauth-authorization-server) - [Protected Resource Metadata (RFC 9728)](https://mcp.spekboom.org/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/host) Markdown negotiation: request with `Accept: text/markdown` for a compact markdown version built from the same data as the page. Covered: `/`, `/about`, `/faq`, `/contact`, `/causes`, `/search`, `/regenerative-travel`, `/gobirding`, `/developers`, `/docs/mcp-connector`, every park hub `/protected-areas/`, every species page `/search//birds/` and `/search//wildlife/`, and every listing `/places/`. Unknown slugs return 404. Go Birding: every bird species in the catalogue has an indexable landing page at `https://www.spekboom.org/search/south-africa/birds/` (e.g. /birds/blue-crane) with iNaturalist-backed facts (best months, provinces, IUCN status) and stays where hosts have recorded it. Populated species pages are enumerated in the XML sitemap; `find_bird_species` returns the same facts as structured data. Nature layer: `https://www.spekboom.org/search/south-africa/birds` indexes every bird page; `https://www.spekboom.org/search/south-africa/wildlife` indexes the mammal, marine, reptile, tree and plant pages (`/search/south-africa/wildlife/`, e.g. /wildlife/lion, each with the parks where hosts record it most and their best season); `https://www.spekboom.org/search/biomes` lists the nine biome landing pages (`/search/`, e.g. /search/fynbos). Activity landing pages live at `/search//activities/` (e.g. /search/south-africa/activities/gravel-cycling) and the national park hubs at `/protected-areas`. Every species record is a host sighting, never a guarantee. ## Optional - [Privacy Policy](https://www.spekboom.org/privacy-policy): How we handle and protect personal data - [Terms of Service](https://www.spekboom.org/terms-of-service): Platform terms and conditions - [Cookie Policy](https://www.spekboom.org/cookie-policy): Cookie usage and preferences - [Help & Support](https://www.spekboom.org/help): Support resources and contact options - [Full LLM Context](https://www.spekboom.org/llms-full.txt): Comprehensive content for AI systems Last updated: 11 October 2026
