"The Verde Valley Wine Trail plays a key role in educating and supporting a number of important topics related to Arizona’s vibrant and booming wine industry,” Woolsey said adding that over 28 wineries are located in the north central region of Arizona, which farm more than 136 acres of wine grapes. “For instance, grape farming is a low water usage crop with a high dollar return," she said.  "We educate grape growers and wineries on sustainable farming practices, and we also support a myriad of not-for-profits that help people affected by alcoholism and abuse. With on-going funding, thanks to sales of the new Northern Arizona Wine Trail specialty plate, the Verde Valley Wine Trail is determined to become a driving economic force for continued growth of the region while promoting water-friendly vineyard development, encouraging sustainable agricultural practices and paving the way for industry professionals to advocate for responsible drinking." Woolsey is looking forward to the official launch of the colorful and attractive new license plate, which in turn will help make every mile matter for Arizona wineries. “When people purchase this license plate, they will be helping to preserve the places they love to explore,” she said. At its core, marketing studies people—how they see themselves, where they belong, what they value, and what they fear losing. Politics is no different. Yet we can get so caught up debating individual issues that we overlook the deeper anxieties shaping people’s choices. One of those anxieties is the changing place of men in American society. Since the 1960s, men’s and women’s roles have changed dramatically. Men are no longer automatically assumed to be the sole providers or natural heads of households. Women have entered professions once dominated by men, earned college degrees in growing numbers, and built independent lives. Access to contraception has given women greater control over their futures. These changes have expanded women’s freedom and opportunity. But they have also challenged the expectations many men were raised to meet. For generations, men were taught that if they worked hard, supported a family, bought a home, and fulfilled their responsibilities, they would earn security, respect, and a recognized place in the world. Let’s be honest: much of the prosperity postwar baby boomers enjoyed came from the Allied victory in World War II and the economic boom that followed. A person’s birthplace, race, gender, and luck mattered as much as hard work. That promise is no longer reliable. Jobs disappear. Housing slips out of reach. Marriage and family life look different than they once did. The social status many men expected to inherit from their fathers is no longer guaranteed. The problem is not that men have become obsolete. The old script no longer works, and we still haven’t proposed a compelling new one. We also need to confront another part of this story: our expectations of prosperity. For much of the postwar era, Americans experienced extraordinary economic growth. The 1950s and 1960s helped establish a powerful national narrative: each generation would do better than the last. A comfortable home, a stable job, and a better life for one’s children seemed not simply possible, but almost inevitable. But an exceptional period of prosperity is not a permanent guarantee. The conditions that made that era possible did not ensure that every subsequent generation would enjoy the same advantages. Today, when someone says, “I will never be able to afford the lifestyle my parents had,” that may accurately reflect their circumstances. Still, it raises a more important question: Why have we come to believe that our parents’ standard of living is the minimum measure of a successful life? America has a problem with expectations—not because people should stop working toward a better future, but because we have confused a particular historical moment with a permanent promise. We have narrowed the American Dream so much that millions feel they have failed before they even had a fair chance. That disappointment creates fertile ground for political resentment. Donald Trump understood this. He recognized the anger and insecurity of people who felt the world they were promised was disappearing. Some men, particularly in communities experiencing economic and cultural change, believed that people who looked down on them were dismissing the values they had built their lives around: work, family, faith, and community. Trump offered a simple, emotionally powerful explanation: America had been taken from them. Someone else was responsible—and only he could restore what they had lost. The contradictions between his personal conduct and the traditional beliefs he invoked mattered less than the story he told. He offered certainty in a time of uncertainty, a scapegoat for complicated problems, and the promise of returning to a familiar world. Trump did not create all this resentment. He recognized it, gave it a target, and turned it into political power. Democrats should understand that dynamic rather than dismiss the people caught up in it. We often talk about progress in terms of inclusion, equality, and expanded opportunity. These are essential goals. But if people experience progress as a competition in which someone else’s advancement means their own decline, we should not be surprised when they resist it. We cannot build a wider coalition by telling people, implicitly or explicitly, that their concerns no longer matter. Nor can we expect people to embrace an uncertain future simply because we tell them the past was unfair. The challenge is to show that a more inclusive society can also be more secure, meaningful, and rewarding for everyone. Men do not need to be restored to the top of the table. They need a meaningful place at it. They need opportunities to contribute, work that offers dignity and a future, relationships based on mutual respect, and communities that value them for more than their income, authority, or ability to provide. They need to know that changing gender roles do not make them less valuable, that asking for help does not make them weak, and that their future does not depend on someone else having fewer opportunities. They need more than a lecture on adapting to change. Telling people to swim harder doesn't replace making sure there is a shore worth swimming toward. Democrats have an opportunity to offer something better than nostalgia. We can argue for an era in which economic security is attainable, family life is supported, work is respected, and everyone has a chance to contribute to something larger than themselves. That means addressing the material realities of people’s lives while also recognizing their need for identity, purpose, and belonging. People do not make political choices based on policy alone. They also make choices based on whether they feel noticed, respected, and hopeful about the future. That is the lesson my marketing background keeps bringing me back to: to understand people’s choices, we must first understand the needs those choices are trying to meet. The question for Democrats is not simply how to persuade people to accept a changing world. It is how to build a world in which they can see a place for themselves. Progress can scare people. What some of us see as moving forward, others may experience as an attack. We should talk more about the core issues people face every day—and less about issues some voters see as symbolic or peripheral. We should talk about food, wages, and health care, and make clear how a fairer society can improve people’s lives. That’s one man’s opinion. Steve Segner

- [City of Sedona and Yavapai County host 8th annual Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection Event Oct. 24](https://sedona.biz/city-of-sedona-and-yavapai-county-host-8th-annual-household-hazardous-waste-and-electronics-collection-event-oct-24/): SEDONA, Ariz. – The city of Sedona and Yavapai County will host a free Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection Event on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, from 7:30 a.m. to noon. The event, for residents of Sedona and unincorporated Yavapai County, will be at the Sedona Red Rock High School parking lot, located at 995 Upper Redrock Loop Rd. In addition to electronics and hazardous waste, the public may also bring medical waste and paper documents for shredding. No commercial waste will be accepted. Several improvements to the event are planned this year. The event begins 30 minutes earlier, more traffic assistants will be onsite, and the Sedona Police Department will manage traffic at the intersection of SR 89A and Upper Red Rock Loop Rd. The site is also larger to support more vehicles. Accepted waste Waste that will be accepted includes aerosol paints and spray products, antifreeze, batteries except for lead acid or any other vehicle battery, gasoline, household cleaners, kerosene, light bulbs, pesticides, pool chemicals, standard grill and camping propane tanks, oil-based paints, stains, solvents, thinners, adhesives, cameras, VHS/CDs/DVDs and players, computer equipment, credit card machines, desktop and laptop computers, e-readers, flatscreen TVs, up to 20 total CRT TVs/monitors, floppy drives and hard drives, gaming systems, household electronics like blenders, hair dryers, microwaves, toasters, and vacuums, mp3 players, phones, power cables, power tools, printers and scanners, radios, and security equipment. Medical waste accepted includes expired vitamins, over-the-counter medications, prescriptions and sharps. Paper documents for shredding will have a limit of four, file-size boxes of paper per household. Not accepted waste Waste that will not be accepted includes ammunition and fireworks, car or other vehicle batteries, commercial business waste, explosives, compressed gas cylinders other than propane such as oxygen, latex or acrylic paints, motor oil and oil filters, plasma or radioactive materials including smoke detectors, tires of any kind, or any other material or items not listed in the accepted list. Ways to dispose of common items not accepted at this event: Add kitty litter or sawdust to latex paint to dry it out and dispose with regular trash. If possible, remove the dried paint from the can. Please recycle the can. Vehicle batteries and motor oil can be returned to auto repair garages or auto supply stores. Why proper disposal of hazardous waste is important Proper disposal of hazardous waste is important for protecting the health of humans and our environment. In landfills, it contaminates drinking water and can kill wildlife. Throwing out electronics can waste billions of dollars in recoverable materials such as gold, silver, coltan, copper, palladium, platinum and other valuable metals. Other information Sedona residents in Coconino County are welcome at the event and are also able to drop off items year-round in Flagstaff at the Flagstaff Hazardous Products Center. Participants will learn about electric vehicle (EV) ownership and have the chance to ride in or drive some of the most innovative electric vehicles on the market. Between 15 and 25 EV’s and their owners will be available at the event to answer questions from the public, offering up their vehicles for display, and allowing their vehicles to be driven along an identified route in Sedona. To drive an EV, participants must bring a valid driver’s license. Licenses will not be required for those who want to take a ride in an EV as a passenger. - [City of Sedona has Help for Sedona Homeowners to Switch to Heat Pumps and Lower Energy Bills ](https://sedona.biz/city-of-sedona-has-help-for-sedona-homeowners-to-switch-to-heat-pumps-and-lower-energy-bills/): SEDONA, Ariz. –  The city of Sedona launched the Northern Arizona Switch Together Heat Pump Co-Op, a group-buying program for heat pump purchase and installations that offers a 17% discount, based off the national average cost. More cost savings, for qualified Sedona homes, may also be found through Sedona’s Home Energy Retrofit Program and Arizona’s Efficiency Arizona Program. Traditionally, homes are heated and cooled by two different systems. A heat pump combines these two systems into a single electrical system that is more energy efficient, effective, and cheaper to run. They also make homes more comfortable year-round. This new co-op is a partnership with Solar United Neighbors, iChoosr, Coconino County and the city of Flagstaff. The city of Sedona has worked with these partners on successful solar co-ops in the past and is now working to do the same for heat pumps. Qualified homeowners who register with the co-op will get a personalized offer. There is no obligation to accept the offer and it is free to register. “This is a fantastic way for homeowners in Sedona, to save money by switching their home heating and colling systems to heat pumps. Heat pumps are a proven technology that works especially well in warmer climates and typically requires minimal maintenance,” said city of Sedona Sustainability Coordinator Zach Schwarz. “While the cost of so many things keep going up, this is a great way to keep your heating and cooling costs low for years to come,” said Schwarz. The last day to register and accept a personal offer with the co-op is Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2026. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Doggone Cutest Craziest Canine Leaders of the Pack (Group Costume) The winner of each category will receive a $100 prize. The parade will begin at Calle Independencia at Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village and make its way to Tlaquepaque North, creating plenty of opportunities for spectators to cheer on Sedona’s best-dressed pups along the route. The fun doesn’t stop with the costume contest. The event will also feature a 50/50 raffle, Humane Society of Sedona merchandise, fun photo ops, swag bags for registered participants and a few Halloween surprises along the way. Registration is $20 per entry, with proceeds benefiting the Humane Society of Sedona and its work providing shelter, medical care and second chances to animals in need. Carol Canyon Drive Columbia Drive Deer Trail Drive Morgan Road Paramount Drive Pinon Court Point Drive Table Top Road Crack sealing involves filling roadway cracks with a hot sealant to prevent water and debris from entering and causing further roadway deterioration. Those affected will be notified with a door hanger before the pavement treatment is applied in mid-October. The door hanger will have details about access, work hours, and impacts. Work is set for Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. No road closures are expected, however, please be aware of temporary lane restrictions, reduced speeds, loud noise, and flagging operations in the work zones. Access to businesses and residences will be maintained whenever possible, however, temporary restrictions may occur. To avoid conflicts with construction equipment and keep the project timing on track, the City asks residents and the public to avoid on-street parking during construction. The City is dedicated to keeping the traveling public, businesses, and residents informed of potential construction impacts throughout the project.
