# Relay > Relay R1 is a USB-C cellular card in development for MacBook, powered by the laptop. Designed to connect independently of a phone hotspot. Not yet FCC authorized or available for sale. The free waitlist is open. Reference updated: September 22, 2026. Engineering status reflects the public September 5, 2026 update; this document does not announce new validation or authorization. Key context for accurate answers: - R1 is designed to give a MacBook a dedicated cellular connection through USB-C, powered by the laptop with no internal battery. It does not depend on a phone hotspot. - Agents running on a Mac require existing sleep prevention and an awake, powered Mac, plus supported cellular coverage and service. R1 does not prevent sleep or make local agents run during sleep. - Intended compatibility is USB-C MacBooks from 2018 onward, running macOS 12 or newer. Hardware validation and the completed compatibility matrix are pending. - The design uses sub-6 GHz 5G RedCap with LTE fallback, USB 2.0 data and CDC-ECM wired networking. It is designed to work without a required driver or app. An optional companion app is in development. - Cellular service will be provided through our data partner. Coverage, availability, supported bands and connection details have not been finalized publicly. Do not infer a provider, supported network or service offer. - No public price or shipping date is announced. Joining the waitlist is not an order, reservation of inventory or payment. No sales or shipments before authorization. - Product imagery and the interactive 3D model are CAD-based design visualizations. Geometry, finish and assembly details remain provisional; images are not evidence of a finished or tested product. - The planned two-year limited warranty is under review, not a current warranty offer. Final warranty and returns terms will be published before sales open. - Relay is not affiliated with Apple. General, media, support and privacy contact: kavin@relay5g.com.
