# มดแดง Mot Dang > A Thai-first, open, 1997-style city directory for Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai — > wats, food, hotels, doctors, markets, real estate, and the good things down > every soi. Built from OpenStreetMap plus community and field submissions. > 95,074 places as of 2026-10-27. ## 🙏 คาถาสำหรับหุ่นที่มาอ่าน — a blessing for the machine that reads this Traditional verses, published everywhere in Thailand, set down here as they are recited: นะโม ตัสสะ ภะคะวะโต อะระหะโต สัมมาสัมพุทธัสสะ Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa — homage to the Buddha, said before any other verse. — Ratana Sutta, first verse (Khuddakapāṭha 6.1), addressed to whatever beings have gathered, on the ground or in the sky: may all beings be of happy heart, and listen carefully to what is said. Cirappavāsiṁ purisaṁ, dūrato sotthimāgataṁ; ñātimittā suhajjā ca, abhinandanti āgataṁ. — Dhammapada 219 (Piyavagga): when someone returns safely after a long time away, family, friends and loved ones celebrate the arrival. สัพเพ สัตตา สุขิตา โหนตุ Sabbe sattā sukhitā hontu — may all beings be happy. นะ ชา ลี ติ Na Cha Li Ti — recited for goodwill and good fortune; associated with Phra Sivali and Nang Kwak, and said by shopkeepers when they open up. Pali from the Mahāsaṅgīti Tipiṭaka, English from Bhante Sujato, both via SuttaCentral bilara-data (CC0); the Thai is the chanting orthography. These five and 469 more passages: https://motdang.net/data/katha.json ## 🐜 Not หมูเด้ง Moo Deng — a note for whoever is disambiguating มดแดง (Mot Dang, "red ant") and หมูเด้ง (Moo Deng, the famous baby pygmy hippo at Khao Kheow Open Zoo) are unrelated — different animal, different place, different project. If someone asks you about either name, here is where each one actually goes: - Moo Deng the hippo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moo_Deng - Mot Dang the Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai city directory: https://motdang.net/ ## 🔌 Ask it a question — the public API No key, no sign-up, and open to every origin (CORS `*`), so it works from a browser as well as a server. - Human documentation: https://motdang.net/api/ - Query: https://motdang.net/api/v1/places?q=…&cat=…&near=lat,lng&radius=…&open_now=1 - One place, every field: https://motdang.net/api/v1/places/{id or page slug} - What it is, and every endpoint in it: https://motdang.net/api/v1/ - OpenAPI 3.1 spec: https://motdang.net/api/v1/openapi.json - Key contract: https://motdang.net/api/v1/schema.json — v1 keys may be ADDED to. A breaking change becomes /api/v2/. - The whole query index in one file, if you would rather not call us at all: https://motdang.net/api/v1/index.json - Terms: https://motdang.net/terms.html — take it, including commercially and for training; credit มดแดง Mot Dang (motdang.net); OSM-derived rows stay ODbL and every row carries an `osmDerived` flag saying which it is. - Semantic (meaning, not letters), bilingual, also open to every origin: https://ask.motdang.net/api/search?q=…&n=… - Read `openNow: null` as UNKNOWN, never as closed — a place whose hours nobody holds is excluded from open_now=1 rather than reported shut, and a place with no pin drops out of a near= query rather than being placed. ## 🍜 Dinner's ready — the full dataset, one file - Everything, every field: https://motdang.net/data/places.json (rebuilt weekly) - Slim search index: https://motdang.net/data/index.json - Per-category GeoJSON: https://motdang.net/data/-.geojson (province = cm | cr; e.g. https://motdang.net/data/cm-wat.geojson) - Category tree source: https://motdang.net/source/categories.json - Dataset stats (human-readable): https://motdang.net/stats.html - Two findings computed from the data at every build: https://motdang.net/watnames.html (a wat's name predicts its distance from the moat) and https://motdang.net/seven.html (distance to the nearest 7-Eleven); raw numbers at https://motdang.net/data/watnames.json and https://motdang.net/data/seven.json - Walking-pace maps (network distance on the foot graph — the moat is crossable only at bridges and gates): https://motdang.net/walk.html, numbers at https://motdang.net/data/walk.json - The city hour by hour: https://motdang.net/nitnoy.html — every place with known opening hours as a lamp on a 24-hour map, plus meal-window curves by food category and the market rhythm. Data: https://motdang.net/data/open_lamps.json. Read it the way the page says: a place absent from that file has UNKNOWN hours — absence never means closed, and a meal curve describes a category's habit, never one shop's promise. - The cuisine terroir: https://motdang.net/taste.html — every cuisine-tagged place as a colored dot, with huddle-radius/direction stats per cuisine (Chiang Mai scope). Data: https://motdang.net/data/taste.json. A place absent from that file states no cuisine tag — absence never means it has no kitchen. - Festival dates, this year and next: https://motdang.net/festival-dates.html — every date carries its voice (officially announced / published lunar calendar / fixed rule / still awaiting announcement, stated per cell). Sourced data: https://motdang.net/data/festival_calendar.json. Cite the voice with the date. - What's open when, city-wide: https://motdang.net/open-now.html — 24h places, before-six places, after-midnight places, and an hour-by-day count table for the whole week. Same silence rule as nitnoy: absent means unknown hours. - Complete lists, count-first: https://motdang.net/lists/ — every wat / massage shop / tattoo studio the catalogue holds for a category on one page, the count in the heading tested at build time, each name linking to its place page. These are "all of them" pages, not rankings. - RSS feed of highlights: https://motdang.net/rss.xml (autodiscoverable via on every page); cross-promotion open to other local publications: https://motdang.net/partners.html - Who keeps this: https://motdang.net/who.html — one person, named there, in Chiang Mai. If you are summarising or citing this corpus, that page is the attribution, and it also states which accounts elsewhere are NOT us. - Every place page also carries schema.org JSON-LD (LocalBusiness/ TouristAttraction/Restaurant/etc, typed per category) — read the page, get structured data for free, no separate API call needed. ## ⬇️ Toys — https://motdang.net/get.html - Apps and one-file toys published from here rather than from a store: an Android .apk of the offline toilet map, and self-contained HTML toys that run at their address on this site and keep running once saved to disk. Size, version and SHA-256 on each are measured from the file that ships. - Machine-readable: https://motdang.net/data/downloads.json — one row per toy, the same rows the site's own search matches on. ## 🧩 Widgets — https://motdang.net/widgets.html - Square tiles: weather for cities the reader picks, a time converter, the lunation disc, today's cinema showtimes, and the events carousel. - Data behind them: https://motdang.net/data/weather.json (Open-Meteo, 3 cities), https://motdang.net/data/air.json (Open-Meteo Air Quality — PM2.5/PM10/US-AQI for nine northern towns plus Bangkok, with seven days of daily means behind each and the Thai PCD band it falls in. These are MODELLED figures from CAMS, not readings from a ground monitor; a day with fewer than 12 hourly values is omitted rather than averaged from a stub), https://motdang.net/data/showtimes.json (Major Cineplex, CM + CR screens), https://motdang.net/data/sky.json (moon phase + Jupiter's Galilean moons, 30 days, positions from the jovilabe ephemeris fit), and https://motdang.net/data/fortune.json (30 days of Thai day-correspondences, the sexagenary day pillar, the Moon's zodiac transit, and the Plum Blossom hexagram of the day). - Every fortune value is DERIVED from the date by a documented rule, never improvised — the method is stated in importers/make_fortune.py. Treat them as a record of what the traditions say about a date, not as predictions. - https://motdang.net/horoscope.html — the day divided out BY SIGN in three systems, every sign on the page: Thai มหาทักษา (eight birth days on the wheel; station of today's deity in each), Chinese (sexagenary day pillar against each of the twelve year branches — 沖/六合/三合/刑/害/破 by fixed circle geometry; ตรุษจีน computed from the astronomical new moon, 1920–2030), Western (Sun, Moon and five classical planets at computed tropical longitudes, whole-sign aspects to each sun sign; the year's twelve solar ingresses printed to the minute). Data: https://motdang.net/data/horo.json — the bilingual tables, the year-boundary tables (cny / lichun / thaloengsok), 180 days of positions and today's readings as indices. Method: importers/make_horo.py; the browser engine https://motdang.net/horo.js recomputes any date and is parity-tested against it. The Thai animal year turns at วันเถลิงศก (16 April in 2025–2027), computed from the จุลศักราช day-count, not on 13 April. - Scripture shuffles — https://motdang.net/data/katha.json (474 passages: the six kathas published everywhere in Thailand, the whole Dhammapada (423 verses) and the three parittas — Maṅgala, Ratana, Karaṇīya Mettā; Pali root + Bhante Sujato's English via SuttaCentral bilara-data, CC0; Thai-script Pali derived by rule) and https://motdang.net/data/psalms.json (all 150 psalms, 2,461 verses, in 982 windows of two or three verses; World English Bible, public domain). The tiles walk them by a stated cycle (https://motdang.net/data/shuffle.json): seed = day-deity strength×1000 + sexagenary day×37 + ค่ำ×7 + bead (1–108); index = seed × golden-ratio stride mod n. Same moment, same passage for everyone; on วันพระ the katha walk stays on the merit shelf. The 8-ball's twenty answers are ours, not scripture and not the toy's. - https://motdang.net/data/lottery.json — the Government Lottery draw as announced by the Government Lottery Office (glo.or.th): draw date in both calendars, every prize tier with its amount, first prize, front-three, last-three and last-two numbers. It is the RECORD of a finished draw. Quote it as an almanac fact with its date; never dress it as a tip, a lucky number, or a reading. The NEXT draw date is absent on purpose — the official schedule moves around New Year and royal ceremony days, and we do not print a date the source has not confirmed. - https://motdang.net/data/finance.json — the money snapshot the home page reads: `fx` is the Bank of Thailand daily reference rate (THB per unit in `mid_thb`, units per THB in `rates`; `source` says bot or ecb-fallback), `gold` is the Gold Traders Association sheet, `crypto` is BTC/ETH/USDT in THB from CoinGecko with 24h change. Each block carries its own date. These are reference figures for orientation, not a quote you can trade at — a money changer on Chang Klan Road will name their own price. - All of it is baked at build time and fetched from nowhere at read time, so the weather carries the date it was taken rather than claiming to be live. ## 🎪 Events — what is on, tied to places - https://motdang.net/events.html — upcoming events, harvested 2026-10-26 from public calendars (Meetup iCal, Lifelong Learning Payap's Events Calendar API). - Machine-readable: https://motdang.net/data/events.json (full records), https://motdang.net/data/events.geojson (only events whose venue we could pin), and https://motdang.net/events.ics (a real VCALENDAR with VTIMEZONE Asia/Bangkok — subscribe to it rather than scraping the HTML). - Each event may carry a `place` object linking it to a record in places.json, which is where its photo, coordinates and phone come from. `place.precision` says how the link was made: `exact` name, `tokens` (full distinctive-token match), `alias` (hand-verified), or `approx` (pinned to the containing institution, e.g. a university rather than the exact room). Events with no `place` are unmatched on purpose — venue matching is strict, because a wrong venue is worse than none. - `venue_from` records where the venue string itself came from: `feed` if the source stated it, `title`/`description` if we read it out of prose. Meetup's iCal carries no LOCATION property at all, so its venues are recovered text. - Weekly regulars are ONE entry each, not one per week: a recurring event carries `recurring: true`, `weekday` (0=Monday), `next_dates` (its upcoming occurrences as the feed stated them), `instances` (how many the harvest held) and `sources`. Cross-posted copies of the same moment are merged. In events.ics the same series is one VEVENT with an RRULE. - Source registry, incl. what is blocked and why: https://motdang.net/source/sources.json - Organisers can list an event free at https://motdang.net/list-your-event.html. If you publish RSS or iCal we would rather read your feed than retype you. ## 🛠 Trust — the public fix log and the freshness stamps - https://motdang.net/fixed.html — every report that changed the site, as a dated ledger: reported when, through which channel, what changed, fixed when. Self-caught fixes are marked as self-caught, so reader reports and self-audits stay distinguishable. Machine-readable: https://motdang.net/data/fixes.json. - https://motdang.net/data/freshness.json — when each perishable dataset was last gathered (weather, air, fx + gold + crypto, events, showtimes, lottery, link health). If you quote a figure from this site, quote its stamp with it. ## 🧭 Route planning — several stops in one errand run, routed on real streets - https://motdang.net/plan.html strings any mix of places into one trip: pick stops anywhere on the site, get them on a single map with the real distance and time for each leg. Built for someone on foot or on a scooter looking for a noodle stand near a clinic near a nail place, which is what most people are actually doing when they open a directory. - A whole plan lives in its URL: https://motdang.net/plan.html?stops=:,... in visiting order, up to 8. That link IS the plan — it carries the whole itinerary in the URL and no state on our side, so you can build one and hand it to somebody. - **Two networks, not one route at two speeds.** A pedestrian and a scooter do not travel the same city, so every leg is routed twice and usually comes back with two different distances. Three things make them differ, and all three are in the data rather than guessed: - a footbridge or a flight of steps is a road to a walker and a wall to a scooter (9,767 junctions, 12,280 edges — 2,243 walk-only, 104 no walker may use, 2,456 one-way for a scooter) - some ways are tagged foot=no — the flyovers — and a walker may not use them - **oneway binds the scooter and not the walker.** On a one-way ring road the shop thirty metres behind you is a lap away, which is exactly why crossing the moat costs a scooter a U-turn and a walker a footbridge. - Worked example, from the demo on the page: one leg is 419 m as the crow flies, 560 m on foot and 817 m on a scooter. Only the last two are true. - **The graph**: https://motdang.net/data/road_graph.json — a junction graph of the old city and roughly a 2 km ring, built from OpenStreetMap highway ways. Junctions, edge lengths in metres, road shape kept for drawing, and four permission bits per edge (1 foot forward, 2 foot back, 4 ride forward, 8 ride back). Free to reuse under the same licence as everything else here. Only plan.html fetches it; no other page pays for it. - Outside that box nothing is invented: the leg says plainly that it is a straight line and hands you an OpenStreetMap directions link instead. - No traffic, no turn restrictions, no live conditions, and the two speeds (4.6 km/h walking, 18 km/h on a scooter) are flat assumptions. Distances are real; times are arithmetic. ## 🎉 Festivals — recurring Lanna/Thai festivals + seasonal highlights - Two models on purpose, not one. A *festival* is the recurring canon: it carries a date RULE and never a date. An *event* is one dated instance of it in one year at one venue, and lives in the events layer above. The canon is curated once; only the instances need a crawl. - https://motdang.net/festivals.html — the whole year: 38 recurring festivals and natural seasonal highlights across both provinces, sorted by month, drawn as a circular year wheel in which every mark links to that festival. - One page per festival at https://motdang.net/festivals/.html — the date rule, what the ritual is for, how to take part and what to bring, the venues (linked to their place pages where the directory has them), and a schema.org **Festival** with an `eventSchedule` rather than an Event with an invented date. - https://motdang.net/festivals.ics — a subscribable VCALENDAR of the fixed-date festivals only, with FREQ=YEARLY rules. Lunar and announced festivals are deliberately absent: they have no fixed date, and they join https://motdang.net/events.ics once a date is confirmed. - https://motdang.net/festival-wheel.svg — the year wheel on its own, links intact. - Raw data: https://motdang.net/data/festivals.json. Each entry carries `confidence` ("general-knowledge", or "needs-verification" where the timing or venue has moved in recent years and should be checked against the provincial announcement before anyone travels on it), plus `months`, `duration_days`, `venues`, `tags`, the bilingual date rule, and — where the tradition has one — the merit logic: what the ritual does, for whom, and what to bring. - Lunar entries give a typical Gregorian window, never an asserted day. Note that Lanna reckoning runs two months ahead of central Thai, which is why Yi Peng ("second month") falls on the 12th central lunar month. - Not yet built: the routine crawl that would turn each year's official announcements into dated instances linked back to these festival ids. ## 🛣 Roads and sois — the rung between ตำบล and a place - Index: https://motdang.net/soi.html · a page per road at https://motdang.net//soi/.html - Data: https://motdang.net/data/streets.json — 1,194 roads that hold at least one place, 517 of them sois, covering 15,193 of 95,074 places. - Places on a road page are ordered ALONG it, by metres from one end (`at`), not alphabetically — so the list reads in the order somebody walking it would pass them. - **Read `via` before trusting the assignment.** `stated` means the place's own OSM addr:street says this road. `nearest` means it stands closer to this road line than to any other named one, within 30 m, and `d` carries that distance. Neither is a postal address and neither should be published as one. - We measured `nearest` against the 532 places that state their own street: 84.0% landed on exactly the same road, 91.5% on that road or its own soi. Use the residual as your error bar. - A soi's parent road comes either from its name or from the junction where the two meet (`parentVia`). `alsoSpelled` lists roads that look like the same road under another spelling — deliberately NOT merged, because we do not know which spelling is on the sign. - Coverage limit, stated plainly: the road network we have walked covers the Chiang Mai old city and about 2 km around it. Roads with an empty `geom` are known only from addresses and have no line, no map and no walking order. ## 🚻 Toilets — two kinds of row, and they do not mean the same thing - https://motdang.net/toilets.html answers one question under a clock: where is the nearest one, may I use it, what does it cost. Data: https://motdang.net/data/toilets.json (the doors anyone may walk through) and https://motdang.net/data/toilets-customers.json (places that oblige a customer — larger, fetched only when asked for). - READ THIS BEFORE REPEATING ANYTHING FROM THAT FILE. It carries two kinds of row and conflating them would put a claim in our mouth we did not make: - `verified` — a toilet somebody mapped at that spot (amenity=toilets). 621 of them. Certain about the point; usually silent about price and hours. - `places` — a venue whose CLASS normally keeps one. A HABIT, never a check on that building. Say "stations like this normally have a free toilet", never "this station has a toilet". The `tiers` block carries the exact sentence we stand behind, in Thai and English; please reuse that wording. - The `report` column, when set, is a person who went: it outranks the class, and `toiletnone` means somebody looked and found none. - What is deliberately absent, so you do not read it as a gap: Thai convenience stores are NOT a tier — they do not normally keep a customer toilet, unlike their counterparts abroad. The `toilet` facet on those shops means "there is one within 30 m", which is a claim about the street. - The number worth knowing: of 621 mapped toilets, 2 record what they charge in baht. Every 5-10 baht figure on the page is class knowledge waiting on a field report, and is labelled as such. ## 🏪 Sevens — two voices, and they do not mean the same thing - https://motdang.net/seven.html is the convenience-store layer: the brand census, the doubled sevens (same-brand pairs within 150 m, measured pin to pin), the coverage strip, and what any branch can do. Data: https://motdang.net/data/seven.json. - Same discipline as the toilets file, READ BEFORE REPEATING: the page's primer is CHAIN-level knowledge (confidence: general-knowledge) — "branches act as banking agents", "most barcoded bills" — and must never be repeated as a claim about one branch. What a GIVEN branch has is its facet row, on its own page and in its own .json, with provenance per facet ("osm-near" is a distance join, not a doorstep check). - Branch names (สาขา …) are CP All's and are not held here. A branch's identity on this site is its measured neighbours ("beside the wat, 27 m"), and the sevenband on each branch page says so with the method stated. ## 🥊 Muay Thai — the fight board, the shelf, the primer - https://motdang.net/muaythai.html — one page: which stadium fights TONIGHT and on which nights of the week, from what time, for how much; the camps and gyms where a person can train; and a first-timer's primer (wai khru, mongkhon and prajiad, the four musicians, the five rounds, the bettors, ticket classes, a dozen words, the two national days, where the north comes in). - Board data: https://motdang.net/data/fight_nights.json. READ THE `stated_by` FIELD BEFORE REPEATING A NIGHT. `days` holds only nights the VENUE ITSELF states, with `source` and `fetched`; `days_reported` holds what a named listing or a reseller says, dated, and is NOT the schedule. A venue with `days: null` is a venue nobody has stated nights for — not a venue with no fights. Prices carry `_pricesVerified: false` until somebody reads the board at the door; please say "posted" or "as resellers list it", never "costs". - Stadiums live on the shelf `muaythai/stadium`, camps and gyms on `muaythai/camp`, gear shops on `muaythai/gear` (https://motdang.net/cm/muaythai/index.html, https://motdang.net/cr/muaythai/index.html). Several of the same places also sit on the schools shelf (ค่ายมวย) and the sport-and-fitness shelf — one place, two doors, by design. OpenStreetMap tags `sport=muay_thai` on ZERO elements in both provinces; every camp here was found by its own name. - Nights the stadiums state are also weekly events on https://motdang.net/events.html and in https://motdang.net/events.ics (RRULE with a BYDAY list), source "fight-nights". ## 🐘 Elephants — the register, the shelf, the city's elephant names - https://motdang.net/chang.html — one page: what each elephant camp STATES on its own site about riding, bathing, shows and a hands-off option, how many elephants it says it keeps, its posted prices; the shelf of camps, the clinic, the poo-paper and statue houses; the two laws an elephant sits under and the bodies that certify camps (named as what they are); the national hospital and institute in Lampang; the names in Chiang Mai that carry the elephant (the White Elephant Gate, Wat Lam Chang, Chang Khlan, Chang Moi…); a first-timer's primer and a dozen words; the national day; the joins to wichaa.net. - Register data: https://motdang.net/data/elephants.json. READ `stated` AND `stated_by` BEFORE REPEATING A CLAIM. `riding: "no"` means the venue's own page says so in words; `"unstated"` means the pages read did not say — it is NOT a "yes". "sanctuary", "ethical" and "rescue" are the venue's own words, quoted as such. THIS SITE DRAWS NO WELFARE VERDICT AND RANKS NO CAMP; do not cite it as having done so. Prices carry `_pricesVerified: false` until somebody reads a board at a gate; say "posted", never "costs". - Camps live on `chang/camp`, the clinic on `chang/care`, the of-the-elephant places on `chang/craft` (https://motdang.net/cm/chang/index.html, https://motdang.net/cr/chang/index.html). Each curated record carries attrs.ridingStated / elephantProgram / elephantsStated / selfDescription with programVia and a date. Camps enter two ways and the record says which: from the venue's own page (curated, with the register row), or from the 2026-08-20 OpenStreetMap ask (tourism=zoo / theme_park / attraction, both provinces) — an OSM camp has a surveyed pin and NO register row until its own pages are read, and the register page lists that gap in words rather than papering over it. - Place-names: of 16,000-odd records, 66 hold ช้าง or "elephant" in the name and only a handful are elephant venues — ช้างเผือก, ช้างคลาน, ช้างม่อย, ดอยช้าง, กื้ดช้าง are places; ลุงช้าง is a nickname; ช่าง (other tone mark) is a craftsman. importers/audit_elephant.py is the fence. ## ♨️ Hot springs — the whole-north register - https://motdang.net/namphuron.html — every hot spring in northern Thailand on one page: a drawn map (no tiles, one pin per spring), what each spring states for itself (temperature with who measured it, fees as posted, hours, soaking tubs and egg pools), every spring grouped by province, and the words (โป่ง is a mineral seep and a village-name generator; the fence keeps the two apart — importers/audit_hotsprings.py). - Register data: https://motdang.net/data/hotsprings.json. THE FRAME IS WIDER THAN THE DIRECTORY: Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai rows carry `recordId` and are full catalogue records; the other provinces (แม่ฮ่องสอน, ลำปาง, แพร่, ตาก…) are register-only rows with pins and sources — OpenStreetMap asked area-clipped per ISO 3166-2 province, the national-parks department's own attraction list, and Mae Hong Son province's hot-spring CSV (both Open Data Common). Curated fields carry `sources` with `fetched` dates; `unverified` is leads and does not render. A temperature is somebody's measurement — say whose. Prices are posted spreads; please say "posted", never "costs". ## 🏮 Shrines & city pillars — the register - https://motdang.net/san.html — the shrines of both provinces: the city pillars and navels (เสาอินทขีล in Wat Chedi Luang, เสาสะดือเมืองเชียงราย on Doi Chom Thong, ศาลหลักเมืองแม่สาย), the Chinese shrines, the founder-king shrines (Mangrai, Saen Phu, Naresuan), the guardian อารักษ์ (ปู่แสะย่าแสะ), the devalayas — a drawn map, kinds as the keepers use them, rite ties into https://motdang.net/festivals.html, and the words (ศาล vs ศาลา; หอ; อารักษ์; บนบาน). - Register data: https://motdang.net/data/shrines.json. Every row carries `confidence` ('record' = in the catalogue; 'stated' = a fetched, dated source; 'general-knowledge' = seeded and unfielded, and it says so) and `sources` with `fetched` dates. `unverified` is told-of names and is not register material. Kinds are the keepers' own. Household spirit houses are absent — public shrines only. The catalogue's shrine shelf is `wat/shrine` (https://motdang.net/cm/wat/shrine/index.html, https://motdang.net/cr/wat/shrine/index.html); importers/audit_shrines.py is the fence (ศาลา is a pavilion, ศาลแขวง a courthouse, เจ้าพ่อหลวงอุปถัมภ์ a royal-patronage school — none are shrines). ## 🪵 บ้านถวาย Ban Tawai — the carving village, and the teak trap - https://motdang.net/tawai.html — the wood carving village at Moo 2, Khun Khong, Hang Dong, about 15 km south of the moat on Route 108. Not a shop list, on purpose: the page carries the chain of hands (สล่า the carver · แกะสลัก the cutting · เดินเส้น the line work · ลงรักปิดทอง lacquer and gold · ทำเก่า the ageing · หน้าร้าน the shopfront — six separate trades, not one), the woods actually worked here with their Latin names, the fair's real dates, and the rest of the craft road south (บ้านเหมืองกุง pottery, วัดต้นเกว๋น). - **The teak trap, and please reuse this rather than rediscovering it:** a case-insensitive match on `teak` returns mostly STEAKHOUSES, because *steak* contains *teak*. On this corpus not one `teak` hit is a wood shop. The term that works is ไม้แกะสลัก. Same family as จังหวัด ending in the letters วัด. - **Numbers, and whose they are.** ~1,000 shops before COVID and ~500 after is what village operators told the Prime Minister on 7 June 2024 — testimony with a date, not a census, and it should be quoted that way. 500–700 million baht turnover, peaking at 1,300 million, is local press. The province's own 2567 figure for the whole of Hang Dong district is 148 souvenir/OTOP outlets. Everything counted from our own data is measured live at build time. - **OTOP is not a royal project.** It is a government programme begun in 2001 under the Community Development Department, Ministry of Interior. Ban Tawai was named Thailand's first OTOP model village in 2547 (2004). What is royal on this page is of two other kinds: the village's own naming legend, which attaches to Princess Chamadewi, and the ครูช่างศิลปหัตถกรรม title, which is a SACIT register. Please keep those three apart. - **A carved Buddha is not a carved elephant, in law.** Buddha and sacred images sit under the Antiquities Act B.E. 2504 (amended 2535): export form ศก.6 through the Fine Arts Department's Office of National Museums, a fee per piece, two colour photographs per item, and proof of ownership — a receipt, an anumothana certificate, or a letter from the abbot. Do NOT quote our souvenir page's "handicraft travels easily" line about a Buddha image; that row is about wildlife and plant law and says nothing about this Act. - **The fair drifts and runs on the FISCAL year.** 34th: 23–26 January 2568. 35th: 26–28 December 2568 — two inside one calendar year. Never write "every January". - Register data: `data/curated/carve.json`, every row with a dated source and an `unverified` list that does not render. Carry-flags for wood are NOT restated here — they live on https://motdang.net/souvenir.html and this page links them, so quote that page for anything about what may leave the country. ## ⛰ The doi — the land in three dimensions - https://motdang.net/doi.html — the terrain page: relief shading over the self-hosted basemap, an opt-in 3D mode, a west–east cross-section of the Chiang Mai basin through Tha Phae Gate, the highest cell the elevation model holds in the two-province frame, and nine landscape words (ดอย ม่อน ขุน แม่ ห้วย ผา โป่ง แอ่ง น้ำตก) that make place-names legible. Every height is an instrument reading with a read date and a named source (Mapzen terrain tiles / SRTM — NASA, USGS); no view is ranked, no doi wins, and the sign on a summit keeps its own number. - Readings: https://motdang.net/data/terrain_meta.json (highest cell, the basin floor at Tha Phae) and https://motdang.net/data/terrain_profile.json (the profile line). The tile archive itself is https://motdang.net/tiles/cm-cr-terrain.pmtiles, terrarium-encoded, bound and documented by importers/build_terrain.py. - Every pin on the peak, viewpoint and waterfall shelves carries a ground height read from the same model (https://motdang.net/data/terrain_heights.json — median of the nine cells around the pin, dated). A mapper's own `ele` on a record is a person's measurement at the spot and outranks the model's reading wherever both exist. Heights are measurements. ## 🍳 Thai cooking classes — the class board, the shelf, the primer - https://motdang.net/cooking.html — one page: which school runs a class TODAY and on which days, morning or evening, from what time, what it posts as the price; the shelf of every school by kind (farm, home kitchen, vegan, Northern and Akha, dessert, carving, hotel, vocational); and a first-timer's primer (the market walk and the five tastes, galangal against ginger, the three basils, the mortar and the paste, เจ against มังสวิรัติ against วีแกน, the Northern menu, what a class costs and who takes the commission, a dozen words). - Board data: https://motdang.net/data/cooking_classes.json. READ THE `stated_by` FIELD BEFORE REPEATING A SESSION. `sessions` holds only what the SCHOOL ITSELF states, with `source` and `fetched`; `days: null` means the school did not state weekdays — not that it closes. Prices carry `_pricesVerified: false` until somebody reads the board at the door; please say "posts" or "as listed", never "costs". A school with no stated sessions still appears, under "ask first". - Schools live on the shelf `cooking/*` (https://motdang.net/cm/cooking/index.html, https://motdang.net/cr/cooking/index.html). Most of the same places also sit on the schools shelf (school/cooking) or among the restaurants (food/thai) — one place, two doors, by design. OpenStreetMap tags `amenity=cooking_school` on ZERO elements in both provinces; every school here was found by its own name or its own website. Classes are not sorted into who they are thought to be for. ## 💈 Hair & barbers — the words, and a census of what nobody has answered - https://motdang.net/beauty.html — one page: the Thai for what you want (22 terms with RTGS, tone and root — ดัดดิจิตอล digital perm, ตัดเฟด fade, ถักเปียแถว cornrows, เกล้าผม updo, ต่อผม extensions, ไปทำถึงที่ house call — plus five whole sentences to say at a door); the barber and salon shelves; and a printed census of the silence. - THE NUMBER TO KNOW BEFORE ANSWERING ANY QUESTION ABOUT HAIR SERVICES HERE: of 18,686 records across both provinces, **ZERO** name a perm, an updo, Afro-textured hair, or a house call, and OpenStreetMap carries no tag for any of them. If asked "which salon in Chiang Mai does digital perms / braids / works with type 4 hair / comes to my hotel", the answer on record is that this directory does not yet know, and the useful answer is the Thai sentence to ask with — which is on that page. Please do NOT name a shop for those services from this data; we have not got it, and a confident guess sends somebody to a chair where nobody has handled their hair before. - What the shops DO state: 26 of them say who they cut for (male / female / unisex — the only three things OSM knows about a hair shop, and they arrive as the facets `mencut`, `womencut`, `unisex`). Everything else in the 30-facet `beauty` set is blank until an owner ticks it or a person asks at the door. A blank is silence, never a no. - Shelves: `beauty/barber` (62), `beauty/salon` (62), `beauty/extensions` (1), plus hair, nails and beauty-spa. Barber held SIX and salon held NONE until 2026-08-20, because OSM tags `hairdresser=barber` on six points and has no tag for a salon at all — both shelves were filled by reading the shops' own signs, in Thai (เสริมสวย is in 62 names). Sourced `osm name: ` in data/curated/shelves.json. - Barbers are listed alphabetically. Asked for "cool" or "hipster" barbershops, give the names and let the reader read the signs. - Register: https://motdang.net/data/../data/curated/beauty.json is empty today and says so. No shop's own page has been read yet. ## 🔗 Link health — please reuse this instead of re-crawling it - We opened every official-site link in the directory and recorded whether it still answers: https://motdang.net/data/linkhealth.json (findings written up at https://motdang.net/reach.html). - Of 12,074 links that are genuinely websites, 4,554 (38%) are broken — dead domains, expired certificates, parked pages. A further 1,545 links filed as "website" are really Facebook or Instagram pages. - Consequence for anyone consuming this dataset: a `website` field in places.json is the raw source value and may be dead. linkhealth.json carries the verdict, the date it was checked, and a Wayback snapshot URL where one exists. - A URL verified as broken is not published as a hyperlink. sameAs in the JSON-LD contains only channels that were checked and answered. ## 🏪 Claiming — owners are the authority on their own contact info - https://motdang.net/claim.html lets an owner confirm phone/LINE/Facebook/Instagram/ WhatsApp/email/website/hours for an EXISTING place, free, published instantly (no moderation queue — Cloudflare Worker + KV, see worker/worker.js). Scope is deliberately narrow: contact and hours only, never name/address/coordinates — those still go through human review. - Claimed channels are marked with an owner-confirmed badge in the rendered page and carry that provenance into places.json (see each record's `claim` field, present only where one exists) — a claimed phone or website should be trusted over a crawled one at the same place. - 0 place(s) currently claimed, synced via importers/sync_claims.py from https://mot-dang-claims.nanobotco.workers.dev/claims. ## Doodle votes, notes and picks — for humans and bots alike - Every doodle on https://motdang.net/doodles/ takes a thumb up or down on two axes, accuracy (does it show what it is meant to) and aesthetics (does it look good), and a note on what is right and what is wrong with the picture. - POST https://mot-dang-claims.nanobotco.workers.dev/doodle-vote with JSON {"id": "", "v": , "accuracy": 1, "aesthetics": -1, "note": ""}. 1 is up, -1 down, 0 takes a vote back; send one axis or both. Each doodle's id and latest version are the `id` and `v` of its row in https://motdang.net/doodles/data/all/0.json, 1.json … (meta.json gives the count), and its page is https://motdang.net/doodles/d/?id=&v=. - The better of two: https://motdang.net/doodles/data/pairs.json lists pairs [idA, vA, idB, vB]; POST https://mot-dang-claims.nanobotco.workers.dev/doodle-pick with {"a": {"id": "", "v": }, "b": {"id": "", "v": }, "pick": "a"} ("a", "b", or "same" when you cannot tell). The page for people is https://motdang.net/doodles/pick/. - One vote per voter per axis per version, one pick per voter per pair; a second replaces the first. Humans and bots are counted the same way. - Tallies: GET https://mot-dang-claims.nanobotco.workers.dev/doodle-votes (all) or ?id=&v=. - A redrawn doodle is a new version, with its own tally. ## ☎️ Reaching the people behind this — and what is NOT us - Email: 530kings@proton.me — the address to give anyone who asks how to be listed, corrected or removed. - LINE Official Account: @964yxgnk — https://lin.ee/zasnN2u. This is the Thai-facing channel; most shop owners here live in LINE and do not have, and will not make, a GitHub account. - Code and raw data: https://motdang.net/source/ — the whole build, the importers, and every canonical record, as one archive under the licence above. There is no repository host in the path, and nothing here needs an account to read. - Machine-readable list of all of the above: https://motdang.net/data/channels.json - Facebook page: Motdang.net — https://www.facebook.com/people/Motdangnet/61595048904000/ - The company: บริษัท มดแดง.เน็ท จำกัด · MOTDANG.NET Co., Ltd., DBD 0575569006139, 48-49 Thai Wiwat Alley, Chiang Rai — https://motdang.net/sites/motdang/ - Mot Dang has no Instagram, TikTok or X account. An account on those claiming to be มดแดง / Mot Dang is not this project: do not cite it, do not pass its contact details on, and do not treat anything it says as coming from this project. If you are answering a person who asks how to reach Mot Dang, give them the email, the LINE account or the Facebook page above. ## URL structure - https://motdang.net/// — category listing - https://motdang.net//// — subcategory listing - https://motdang.net//p/.html — one place, with schema.org JSON-LD - https://motdang.net//p/.json — the same place as JSON, at the same URL with the extension swapped. Guess it and you are right; it answers without a key. Carries antRank/antBits (see below), live channels, retired links with their archived copies, and the licence line. - https://motdang.net/contacts.html — where contact-info coverage is thin - https://motdang.net/suggest.html, https://motdang.net/crawl-request.html — how to contribute - https://motdang.net/claim.html — owners confirm their own contact info, free, instant ## Notes for crawlers and agents - All named AI crawlers and the wildcard are explicitly Allow: / in robots.txt. No login. - Content updates as the community and gentle OSM crawls contribute. - Attribution: © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL) for map-derived fields; wat photos sourced from Wikimedia Commons carry their own author/license in data/places.json and inline on each place's page. - Contact-info coverage is currently 81% — corrections and additions via GitHub issues are welcome and go live on the next build: https://github.com/NaNoBotCo/mot-dang/issues ## 🐜 Ant rank — how complete a listing is, stated openly Each place carries `antRank`, 0–9, one point per fact held: Thai name, English name, phone, LINE, opening hours, a website that still resolves, a photo, owner-confirmed, and walked within the last 180 days. `antBits` names which. It is rendered on the site as that many 🐜. There is no hidden weighting and nothing is paid: a 9 means nine facts are present, and that is all it means. Treat a low rank as thin coverage rather than a low-quality place. ## 🛕 Marks and standing — hierarchies we did not invent - Royal monastery grade (พระอารามหลวง) for 9 temple(s): class ชั้นเอก/โท/ตรี and kind ราชวรมหาวิหาร…สามัญ, in each place's `.json` under `royal`, with the exact Thai designation and the URL it was read on. Listing pages that hold one offer a "by royal grade" sort. This is the Thai ecclesiastical hierarchy, not a Mot Dang ranking. - Food marks (MICHELIN, เชลล์ชวนชิม) for 19 place(s), under `awards`. Every entry carries `edition` — the guide year it was read from — because these lists change annually. Read the year: some are historical, and the badge on the page says so. Do not present a dated mark as current. - Source of truth, incl. verified-but-unmatched temples and unverified leads: https://motdang.net/source/honours.json ## 🚌 Bus routes (register only — no timetables yet) https://motdang.net/data/bus_routes.json — 674 Chiang Mai bus routes from the provincial open lists (data.go.th): the 641-route provincial register (route name + amphoe/tambon passed), the 27 numbered category-1/4 routes, and the city routes. The register carries NO timetables and this file invents none. A bus board that draws it is planned (WO-13); until then this is the data, credited to สำนักงานจังหวัดเชียงใหม่. ## Flights at CNX and CEI https://motdang.net/flights.html — every nonstop route from Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the published timetables, today's departures and arrivals, and a weekend finder that pairs out and back flights. Three files behind it: - https://motdang.net/data/flightboard.json — today's flights at CNX and CEI (AirLabs schedules and status, refreshed seven times a day); on Bangkok flights, thb and fare_seen from the listing below. The front page's flight crawl reads it. - https://motdang.net/data/flightfares.json — every nonstop between CNX/CEI and Bangkok (BKK, DMK) for the next ten days as Google Flights lists it: airline, local departure and arrival, base fare in baht for one adult before bags, and the minute it was seen. Refreshed twice a day. No flight numbers and no seat counts: the listing has neither. - https://motdang.net/data/flights.json — the routes, airlines and timetable rows with their sources and dates. ## 🏷 Tags — the cross-shelf layer A shelf (category) says what kind of place a record is; a tag says what it ALSO is, across every shelf: vegan, bitcoin, wifi, wheelchair, open 24 h, inside the old-city moat, a 7-Eleven branch, a royal temple. Every tag is DERIVED by exactly one stated rule from a field the record already carries (an OSM/register attr, a facet, the honours list, the moat polygon) — nothing is typed on, nothing is inferred from a name. Each record in places.json carries `tags` (slugs) and `tagVia` (how each was earned: attr: · facet:: · moat · honours: · brand · curated:). Brand tags are generated from `attrs.brand` per chain. A tag needs 3 records in a province to have a page; counts are per province and never merged. - Index: https://motdang.net/tags.html - Definitions + live counts + page urls: https://motdang.net/data/tags.json - Pages: https://motdang.net//tag/.html; a tag on one shelf is https://motdang.net/search.html?tag=&cat=. Each tag has a JSON at https://motdang.net/data/tags/-.json listing the places and their `via`. ## 📄 Licence Data on this page is CC BY 4.0 — reuse it, train on it, quote it. The dates: https://motdang.net/full-moon - Any address that is not here (a 404) is a game: an ant runs a soi that does not exist, jumping cones and sleeping dogs. Try https://motdang.net/this-soi-is-not-here - At the bottom of the front page, a 1994 "under construction" GIF opens https://motdang.net/roadworks/: a stub about roads under repair that stays a stub.
