Long Island Mental Health & Wellness provides Port Jefferson school avoidance counseling to help families find their way forward. - Published: 2026-09-27 - Modified: 2026-09-27 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/school-refusal-or-avoidance/ School Refusal or Avoidance School mornings can unravel quickly. One day your child heads out the door without a second thought; the next, they are frozen at the threshold, sobbing, or complaining of a stomachache that disappears by noon. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone, and you are not failing as a parent. School refusal and avoidance are real, recognized challenges that affect children of all ages, backgrounds, and learning profiles. For many children, the distress is genuine and deeply felt, even when the cause is difficult to pinpoint. When a child consistently misses school, they lose valuable instructional time, and persistent absences may interfere with the formation of social connections and problem-solving skills. Recognizing the signs early gives families the best opportunity to step in before the pattern becomes more deeply rooted. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, our team works with families to understand what is driving a child's resistance to school and to build a clear, supportive path back to participation and confidence. What Is School Refusal or Avoidance? School refusal refers to a persistent pattern of avoiding school that causes significant distress for a child and disruption for the family. This pattern is distinguished from ordinary reluctance by its intensity, its duration, and how much it interferes with daily life. A child does not need to be absent every day to meet the definition. Some children attend school most days but regularly arrive late, leave early, or spend a significant portion of the... > Learn about our Family Resource Navigation in Port Jefferson, a practical, non-clinical support service for families who have completed an evaluation with our practice. - Published: 2026-09-11 - Modified: 2026-09-11 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/family-resource-navigation/ LIMHW Family Resource Navigation Service Overview A comprehensive evaluation often provides families with greater clarity about their child’s needs and a detailed set of recommendations. However, understanding how to implement those recommendations—and navigating the various systems, agencies, eligibility requirements, and providers involved—can be challenging. LIMHW Family Resource Navigation is designed as a practical, non-clinical support service for families who have completed an evaluation with our practice. The goal is to help families move from recommendations to action by identifying appropriate resources, understanding potential next steps, and developing a manageable plan for accessing recommended supports. This service does not replace clinical treatment, formal case management, legal advocacy, or services provided by government or community agencies. Rather, it provides individualized guidance and resource navigation based upon the recommendations identified through the evaluation. Successful relationships require people to notice and interpret information, understand their own emotions and the perspectives of others, respond flexibly when interactions do not go as expected, and use those abilities in real situations with other people. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, we offer Socio-Dramatic Affective-Relational Intervention, or SDARI, for children, adolescents, and adults who would benefit from support with social development and relationships. SDARI is an evidence-informed intervention originally developed at Stony Brook University that uses shared interests, improvisation, and interactive activities to create opportunities for social learning in a supportive group environment. What Is SDARI? SDARI was developed specifically to address the complexity of social interaction. Rather than teaching social behavior primarily through instruction, worksheets, or memorized rules, the approach gives participants opportunities to practice navigating social situations as they occur. Groups incorporate activities such as improvisation, games, collaborative challenges, and shared interests to create natural opportunities for interaction. Participants may practice initiating and maintaining conversations, recognizing emotions, considering another person's perspective, solving problems with peers, handling unexpected changes, and navigating disagreements. Because these skills are practiced within actual interactions, group leaders can help participants understand what is happening in the moment and experiment with different ways of responding. Moving Beyond Social Skills Training Traditional social skills programs sometimes focus heavily on teaching rules about how a person is expected to behave. While explicit instruction can be helpful, real social... > LIMHW treats Oppositional Behavior and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) in children and adolescents. For some children, however, conflict becomes frequent enough that it affects everyday life at home, at school, or within relationships. Parents may feel as though nearly every request becomes a negotiation, ordinary routines regularly escalate into arguments, or strategies that seem to work with other children consistently make things worse. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, we work with children and adolescents who demonstrate oppositional behavior as well as those who have been diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, or ODD. Our approach begins with understanding what is contributing to the behavior rather than assuming that a child is simply choosing not to cooperate. Understanding Oppositional Behavior Oppositional behavior can include frequent arguing, refusing requests, becoming easily frustrated, challenging rules or expectations, blaming others, or responding angrily when limits are set. When these behaviors are persistent, occur across situations, and significantly affect functioning, a child may meet criteria for Oppositional Defiant Disorder. A diagnosis can describe a pattern of behavior, but it does not necessarily explain why that pattern developed. Two children who appear equally oppositional from the outside may be struggling for very different reasons. Understanding those differences is important when determining how to help. Looking Beyond the Behavior Behavior communicates information. A child who refuses a task may be avoiding something that feels overwhelming, protecting themselves from anticipated failure, struggling to shift from one activity to another, or reacting to... > We provide Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in Port Jefferson for adolescents and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, OCD, and more. - Published: 2026-09-10 - Modified: 2026-09-10 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/acceptance-and-commitment-therapy/ Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, commonly referred to as ACT, is an evidence-based approach that helps people develop a different relationship with difficult thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Rather than focusing entirely on eliminating uncomfortable feelings, ACT helps people learn how to respond to those experiences more flexibly while continuing to move toward the things that are important to them. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, our clinicians may incorporate ACT into treatment with adolescents and adults when it is appropriate for the individual and their goals. ACT can be particularly useful when attempts to control, avoid, or get rid of uncomfortable thoughts and feelings have begun to interfere with everyday life. Understanding Acceptance and Commitment Therapy It is natural to want to avoid experiences that make us uncomfortable. Someone who feels anxious in social situations may stop attending events. A person who is afraid of failing may avoid taking opportunities that feel uncertain. Someone who experiences difficult thoughts may spend significant time trying to suppress them, argue with them, or seek reassurance that they are not true. These strategies can provide relief in the short term. Over time, however, a person's efforts to avoid discomfort can begin to limit their choices and make their world smaller. ACT helps people recognize these patterns and learn that difficult thoughts and feelings do not always need to disappear before they can take meaningful action. Acceptance in ACT does not mean liking an uncomfortable experience, agreeing with every thought that... > At LIMHW, we provide effective therapy for families in East Setauket navigating anxiety, behavioral concerns, developmental differences, and major life transitions. - Published: 2026-09-10 - Modified: 2026-09-10 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/therapy-and-support-for-families/ Therapy and Support for Families When one member of a family is struggling, it often affects everyone. Anxiety, behavioral concerns, developmental differences, school difficulties, relationship changes, and major life transitions can influence the way family members communicate with one another and manage everyday life. At other times, the primary concern is the family dynamic itself, with patterns of conflict or misunderstanding that have become difficult to change. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, we work with families in a variety of ways depending on what is happening and what type of support is needed. Sometimes that means working with the family together. In other situations, a child, teen, or adult may participate in individual therapy while parents or other family members are incorporated into treatment when appropriate. Understanding the Whole Family People do not experience emotional and behavioral difficulties in isolation. Children and adolescents are developing within families, and adults are often balancing relationships, parenting, work, caregiving, and other responsibilities at the same time they are managing their own needs. Understanding this broader context can be particularly important when a family has been trying to solve the same problem for a long time. Parents may find themselves responding differently to a child's behavior, siblings may be affected by the amount of attention one family member requires, or repeated conflict may develop around school, routines, responsibilities, or expectations. Over time, everyone can become frustrated and patterns that began as attempts to help may stop being effective. Some children work extremely hard but continue to have difficulty with reading, writing, or math. Others perform well in some subjects while having significant difficulty in one particular area. Academic struggles can also overlap with attention, executive functioning, language, anxiety, or other developmental differences, making it important to understand the reasons behind the difficulty rather than assuming a child simply needs to try harder. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, we work with children and adolescents with learning disabilities and other learning-related concerns. Our clinicians provide comprehensive evaluations to help families understand a child's learning profile and also provide therapeutic support when academic difficulties begin to affect confidence, anxiety, emotional well-being, or school functioning. Understanding Learning Disabilities A learning disability is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects the development and use of specific academic skills. A child with a learning disability may have difficulty with reading, written expression, mathematics, or a combination of areas despite having adequate opportunities to learn. Learning disabilities can present in many different ways. A student may struggle to read accurately or fluently, have difficulty understanding what they read, find spelling and written expression unusually challenging, or have persistent difficulty learning mathematical concepts and calculations. Some children compensate well for years before academic demands increase and their difficulties become more apparent. Learning disabilities are not a reflection of intelligence. A child can have average or above average cognitive abilities... > LIMHW offers cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in Port Jefferson. Learn how CBT can help with anxiety, depression, OCD, stress, and other concerns. - Published: 2026-09-10 - Modified: 2026-09-10 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/cognitive-behavioral-therapy/ Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, commonly referred to as CBT, is an evidence-based approach to therapy that focuses on the connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to treat a wide range of concerns and can be adapted for children, adolescents, and adults. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, many of our clinicians incorporate CBT into treatment when it is appropriate for the individual and their goals. Rather than applying the same set of strategies to everyone, we use CBT within a broader understanding of the person, their experiences, and the factors contributing to their difficulties. What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? CBT is based in part on the understanding that the way we interpret situations can influence how we feel and how we respond. Over time, patterns of thinking and behavior can develop that unintentionally contribute to anxiety, depression, avoidance, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and other concerns. Therapy helps people become more aware of these patterns and determine whether they are accurate or useful. This does not mean simply replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. Instead, CBT encourages people to look at situations more flexibly, consider different perspectives, and recognize when a familiar pattern of thinking may be contributing to distress. The behavioral component of CBT is equally important. Changing what we do can influence how we think and feel. Depending on the concern, treatment might involve gradually approaching situations that have been avoided, increasing participation in meaningful activities, practicing new ways of responding to stress,... > Therapy for adults near Rocky Point can help address anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, autism, relationships, stress, life transitions, and other concerns. - Published: 2026-09-10 - Modified: 2026-09-10 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/therapy-for-adults/ Therapy for Adults People come to therapy for many different reasons. Some are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationships, or a specific life event. Others have been managing the same patterns for years and have reached a point where they are ready for something to change. Sometimes there is no single problem at all. A person may be functioning well in many areas of life while still feeling overwhelmed, dissatisfied, disconnected, or unsure about what they want next. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, we provide individualized therapy for adults across different stages of life. Our clinicians work collaboratively with each person to understand what is bringing them to therapy, what may be contributing to their current difficulties, and what they would like to be different. Reasons Adults Seek Therapy Adulthood comes with responsibilities and transitions that can place significant demands on emotional well-being. Work, relationships, marriage, parenting, divorce, caregiving, financial responsibilities, health concerns, and changes within families can all create periods of increased stress. Even positive transitions can be difficult to navigate when they involve changes in identity, routine, expectations, or relationships. Adults may also seek therapy for concerns that have been present for much longer. Anxiety, perfectionism, low self-esteem, difficulties in relationships, emotional regulation, or patterns of avoiding uncomfortable situations may become more noticeable as responsibilities increase. Some people enter therapy after recognizing that coping strategies that once worked for them are no longer as effective. Our clinicians work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, autism, social... > In Port Jefferson, therapy for teens can help address anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, autism, school stress, relationships, and more. - Published: 2026-09-10 - Modified: 2026-09-10 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/therapy-for-teens/ Adolescence brings a tremendous amount of change in a relatively short period of time. Teenagers are developing greater independence, navigating increasingly complex friendships and relationships, managing academic expectations, thinking about their future, and figuring out who they are and how they fit into the world around them. While some stress and emotional ups and downs are expected during this period, there are times when teens need additional support. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, we work with teenagers experiencing a wide range of emotional, behavioral, social, and developmental concerns. Our clinicians understand that effective therapy with adolescents requires finding the right balance between supporting a teen's growing independence and recognizing the important role that parents and families continue to play in their lives. When a Teen May Benefit from Therapy Parents often wonder how to distinguish typical adolescent behavior from something that warrants additional attention. Changes in mood, a desire for more privacy, increased focus on friendships, and occasional conflict with parents can all be normal parts of adolescence. More persistent or significant changes may indicate that a teenager is struggling. A teen may benefit from additional support when anxiety, sadness, irritability, emotional outbursts, withdrawal, school difficulties, social concerns, or changes in behavior begin to interfere with everyday life. Other teens may appear to be functioning well but are privately struggling with perfectionism, self-esteem, relationships, identity, academic pressure, or uncertainty about their future. Sometimes the concern is clear to everyone. Other times, parents know that something has changed but... > We offer individual therapy for young adults in Port Jefferson navigating anxiety, college, career, relationships, neurodivergence, and major life transitions. - Published: 2026-09-08 - Modified: 2026-09-11 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/young-adults/ Young Adults Therapy on Long Island The transition into adulthood can be exciting, but it can also be surprisingly difficult. For much of childhood and adolescence, life comes with a built-in structure. There are school schedules, parents managing many of the logistics, teachers providing deadlines, and relatively clear expectations about what comes next. Young adulthood changes that quickly. Suddenly, there are decisions about college, work, relationships, finances, independence, and the future, often without a clear roadmap for how any of it is supposed to happen. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness (LIMHW), we work with young adults navigating the emotional and practical challenges that come with this stage of life. Some seek therapy for anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, or other established concerns. Others are doing reasonably well on paper but feel overwhelmed, stuck, uncertain about their direction, or frustrated that adulthood seems harder for them than they expected. Therapy can provide a place to address mental health concerns while also helping young adults understand themselves, develop greater independence, build meaningful relationships, and create an adult life that works for them. The Transition to Adulthood Turning eighteen does not suddenly provide someone with all of the skills needed to function independently. Young adulthood is a developmental period in its own right, and the transition can extend well beyond the teenage years. Young adults are often expected to make major decisions while they are still learning how to manage everyday responsibilities. They may be choosing a college or career path, living... > We offer therapy for children and adolescents on Long Island experiencing anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, school, social, behavioral, and other concerns. - Published: 2026-09-08 - Modified: 2026-09-11 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/children-and-adolescents/ Children and Adolescents Therapy on Long Island Knowing when a child or teenager needs additional support is not always easy. Some young people tell their parents directly that they are struggling, while others show it through changes in behavior, mood, sleep, school performance, friendships, or willingness to participate in things they previously enjoyed. Parents may know that something feels different without being able to identify exactly what is wrong. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness (LIMHW), we work with children and adolescents experiencing a wide range of emotional, behavioral, social, developmental, and school-related concerns. Some come to us with established diagnoses, while others begin therapy because a parent, teacher, physician, or the young person themselves has noticed that something is becoming difficult. Our first goal is to understand what is happening and why, then determine what type of support is most likely to help. When Should a Child or Teen See a Therapist? There is no single sign that determines when therapy is needed. Children and teenagers experience difficult periods, and not every emotional reaction or behavioral change requires professional treatment. At the same time, families do not need to wait until a problem becomes severe before asking for help. Therapy may be worth considering when a concern persists, begins interfering with everyday life, creates significant distress, or affects school, friendships, family relationships, sleep, independence, or participation in activities. Parents may seek support for concerns such as: Anxiety or excessive worry Depression or changes in mood Emotional outbursts or... > LIMHW offers individuals and families near Rocky Point ADHD evaluations, therapy, and support, with a focus on attention and executive functioning. - Published: 2026-09-08 - Modified: 2026-09-11 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder-adhd/ Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) ADHD is often described as difficulty paying attention or being overly active, but the reality is much more complex. A child with ADHD may know exactly what they are supposed to do but struggle to get started. A teenager may spend hours avoiding an assignment that ultimately takes twenty minutes to complete. An adult may function extremely well in a demanding career while repeatedly losing track of appointments, forgetting everyday responsibilities, or feeling overwhelmed by tasks that seem as though they should be simple. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness (LIMHW), we work with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults with ADHD as well as individuals who are questioning whether ADHD may help explain longstanding difficulties with attention, organization, executive functioning, impulsivity, or emotional regulation. Our approach focuses on understanding how ADHD affects the individual person and developing strategies that improve functioning without reducing the person to a diagnosis. Understanding ADHD ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects the regulation of attention, activity, impulses, and executive functioning. Symptoms begin during development, although they may not always be recognized during childhood. ADHD can continue into adolescence and adulthood, and the way it appears often changes as a person gets older. Some people primarily experience difficulty sustaining attention, organizing themselves, remembering responsibilities, or completing tasks. Others have more visible hyperactivity and impulsivity. Many experience a combination of these difficulties. ADHD is also not simply an inability to focus. In fact, people with ADHD may be capable of... > Learn about Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), an evidence-based OCD treatment in Long Island for children, teens, young adults, and adults at LIMHW. - Published: 2026-09-08 - Modified: 2026-09-11 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/exposure-and-response-prevention-erp-for-ocd/ Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD Exposure and Response Prevention, commonly called ERP, is an evidence-based treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Although the word “exposure” can sound intimidating, effective ERP is not about forcing someone into frightening situations or asking them to tolerate overwhelming distress. It is a structured, collaborative approach that helps people change the way they respond to obsessive thoughts, uncertainty, and anxiety. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness (LIMHW), we provide ERP for children, adolescents, young adults, and adults with OCD. Treatment is individualized based on the person's symptoms, age, developmental profile, and goals. Our clinicians also understand that OCD frequently occurs alongside anxiety, autism, ADHD, and other concerns, and treatment needs to account for the whole person rather than focusing on OCD symptoms in isolation. How Does ERP Work? OCD creates a cycle. A person experiences an intrusive thought, image, sensation, urge, or doubt that causes distress. In response, they perform a compulsion or avoid something in an attempt to feel safer or more certain. The compulsion works temporarily because anxiety decreases, but that relief teaches the brain that the obsession was important and that the compulsive response was necessary. ERP interrupts that cycle. During exposure, a person intentionally approaches a situation, thought, feeling, sensation, or uncertainty that typically triggers OCD. During response prevention, they practice reducing or resisting the compulsion they would normally use to make the discomfort go away. Over time, this gives the person an opportunity to learn that they can... > In Stony Brook, OCD treatment for children, teens, young adults, and adults is available from Long Island Mental Health & Wellness. - Published: 2026-09-08 - Modified: 2026-09-11 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd/ Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, is often misunderstood. People sometimes associate OCD with being extremely organized, particular, or concerned about cleanliness, but the actual experience of OCD can be very different. OCD can involve frightening intrusive thoughts, persistent doubt, repeated checking, reassurance seeking, mental reviewing, avoidance, or rituals that other people may not even know are happening. For children, adolescents, and adults living with OCD, the cycle can become exhausting. A person may know that a fear is unlikely or that a ritual does not logically prevent something bad from happening, yet still feel an overwhelming need to respond. Others may become consumed with determining whether a thought means something important about who they are, whether they have made a mistake, or whether they can be completely certain that something bad will not happen. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness (LIMHW), we provide evidence-based treatment for OCD across the lifespan. Our clinicians understand that OCD can take many forms and that effective treatment requires recognizing the cycle between obsessions, distress, and compulsions. Treatment focuses on helping individuals respond differently to uncertainty and intrusive experiences so that OCD has less control over their lives. Understanding the OCD Cycle OCD typically involves obsessions, compulsions, or both. Obsessions are intrusive thoughts, images, sensations, urges, or doubts that create distress. Compulsions are behaviors or mental acts a person feels driven to perform in response to that distress. A compulsion may provide temporary relief, which makes it understandable that the person wants... > Long Island Mental Health & Wellness provides evidence-based anxiety therapy in Port Jefferson for children, teens, and adults. For some people, it involves constant worry about what might go wrong. Others experience physical symptoms, panic, perfectionism, avoidance, difficulty sleeping, irritability, or an overwhelming need to know exactly what to expect. In children and adolescents, anxiety may show up as frequent reassurance seeking, difficulty separating from parents, school avoidance, emotional outbursts, stomachaches, or refusing activities that once seemed manageable. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness (LIMHW), we provide evidence-based treatment for anxiety across the lifespan. Our clinicians work with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults experiencing anxiety on its own as well as individuals whose anxiety occurs alongside autism, ADHD, OCD, depression, learning differences, or other concerns. Treatment is individualized because understanding what is driving anxiety is an important part of determining how to treat it effectively. When Does Anxiety Become a Problem? Anxiety is a normal human emotion. Everyone experiences worry, uncertainty, nervousness, and fear, and those emotions serve an important purpose. Anxiety helps us recognize potential threats, prepare for difficult situations, and respond when something requires our attention. The problem occurs when anxiety begins interfering with everyday life. Someone may spend so much time anticipating what could go wrong that it becomes difficult to enjoy what is happening now. A child may avoid school, sleepovers, activities, or social situations. A teenager may become increasingly restricted by fears of failure or judgment. An adult may repeatedly seek reassurance, avoid making decisions, or organize life around preventing... > We assist parents of children with autism in East Setauket through skilled evaluations, neurodiversity-affirming therapy, and family-focused support. - Published: 2026-09-08 - Modified: 2026-09-11 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/neurodiverse-children/ Neurodiverse Children Every child experiences and responds to the world differently. For neurodivergent children, those differences may affect communication, attention, learning, sensory processing, emotional regulation, social interaction, flexibility, or the ability to manage everyday demands. Some differences are apparent early in development, while others become more noticeable as expectations increase at school, at home, or socially. Parents often come to Long Island Mental Health & Wellness (LIMHW) because they know their child needs support but are not always sure what that support should look like. Their child may have an autism or ADHD diagnosis, learning differences, anxiety, sensory needs, or a more complex developmental profile. In other situations, a child may not yet have a diagnosis at all. What parents often know is that strategies that seem to work for other children are not working for theirs. At LIMHW, we take a neurodiversity affirming approach to supporting children and their families. This means recognizing that neurological differences are part of natural human variation while also taking a child's challenges seriously. Our goal is not to make a neurodivergent child behave more like a neurotypical child. We work to understand why a child is struggling, identify skills and supports that may help, and create environments in which the child can be successful. Understanding the Child Behind the Behavior Behavior tells us something, but it does not always tell us exactly what is happening underneath. A child who refuses to complete a task may be overwhelmed by the demands involved. A child may be struggling academically despite working hard. A teenager may be experiencing increasing anxiety, difficulty attending school, or challenges with attention and organization. An adult may have spent years wondering whether autism, ADHD, or another neurodevelopmental difference could explain patterns they have experienced throughout their life. In other situations, a family may already have a diagnosis but need a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's strengths, challenges, and support needs. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness (LIMHW), psychological and neurodevelopmental evaluations are designed to answer meaningful questions. Testing is not simply about obtaining scores or determining whether someone meets criteria for a diagnosis. A comprehensive evaluation brings together developmental history, current concerns, standardized assessment, clinical observation, and information about how a person functions in everyday life. The goal is to develop a clearer understanding of what is happening and use that information to determine what may actually help. What Can a Psychological Evaluation Help Identify? People seek evaluations for many different reasons. Some referrals are focused on one specific question, such as whether an individual meets criteria for autism or ADHD. Others are more complex. A parent may know that their child is struggling but be unsure whether the underlying issue involves attention, learning, anxiety, executive functioning, social development, or several factors interacting with one another. Depending on the referral question, psychological and... > Explore options for adult autism near Rocky Point, including evaluations and neurodiversity-affirming therapy, at Long Island Mental Health & Wellness. - Published: 2026-09-08 - Modified: 2026-09-11 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/available-services/neurodiverse-adults-adult-autism/ Neurodiverse Adults & Adult Autism Many adults begin exploring neurodivergence after years of feeling as though they experience the world differently from the people around them. They may have always found social interactions more effortful, struggled with sensory environments, needed significant recovery time after work or socializing, or found everyday responsibilities surprisingly difficult despite being successful in other areas of their lives. Some have spent years receiving treatment for anxiety, depression, ADHD, or other concerns without feeling that those diagnoses fully explained their experiences. For others, the question emerges later and somewhat unexpectedly. A child may receive an autism or ADHD diagnosis and a parent suddenly recognizes themselves in the evaluation. A partner, therapist, or friend may raise the possibility of neurodivergence. Increased awareness of the many ways autism and ADHD can present in adulthood may also lead someone to reconsider experiences they previously viewed as personality traits, quirks, or personal shortcomings. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness (LIMHW), we work with neurodivergent adults who have established diagnoses as well as adults who are beginning to question whether autism, ADHD, or another neurodevelopmental difference may help explain their experiences. Our goal is not to fit someone into a label. It is to help people better understand how their minds work, identify areas where support may be useful, and develop ways of navigating life that are effective and sustainable for them. A young child may have clear differences in communication, play, sensory processing, or social development, while another child may talk easily, do well academically, and hold it together all day at school, only to become completely overwhelmed at home. A teenager may desperately want friends but struggle to understand why relationships feel so complicated. An adult may have spent years feeling different, exhausted by social interactions, or wondering why everyday demands seem to require so much effort. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness (LIMHW), we work with autistic children, adolescents, and adults across a wide range of strengths, needs, identities, and life experiences. We also work with people who are questioning whether autism may help explain their experiences and families who are trying to better understand and support someone they love. Our approach is both evidence-based and neurodiversity affirming. We recognize autism as a neurodevelopmental difference, not something that needs to be “fixed,” while also recognizing that autistic people can experience very real challenges that deserve appropriate support. Being affirming does not mean ignoring areas in which someone is struggling. Our goal is to understand the individual person, identify what is making life harder, build meaningful skills and supports, and help people function and feel better without asking them to become someone they are not. Social anxiety becomes more concerning when the fear of being judged, embarrassed, rejected, or doing something wrong begins to interfere with everyday life. For some people, this leads to avoiding social situations altogether. Others participate but experience significant anxiety before, during, and after the interaction. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, we work with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults who experience social anxiety. Treatment is individualized and focuses not only on reducing anxiety, but also on helping people feel more comfortable navigating relationships and social situations in ways that are meaningful to them. Understanding Social Anxiety Social anxiety can affect many different areas of life. A child may be reluctant to raise their hand in class, ask a teacher for help, attend a birthday party, or join a group of peers. A teenager may avoid school activities, presentations, dating, eating in front of others, or situations in which they worry about being noticed or evaluated. Young adults and adults may struggle with college, job interviews, meetings, workplace interactions, friendships, dating, or other situations that require them to interact with unfamiliar people. While some people experience persistent sadness or hopelessness, others may notice increased irritability, exhaustion, withdrawal, difficulty concentrating, or a loss of interest in things they once enjoyed. Children and teens may become less engaged with family or friends, struggle more at school, or seem increasingly frustrated or overwhelmed. Adults may continue to manage work, parenting, school, and other responsibilities while feeling disconnected, depleted, or unlike themselves. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, we work with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults experiencing depression and related concerns. We recognize that symptoms do not occur in isolation, and treatment begins with understanding the individual, their experiences, and the factors that may be contributing to how they are feeling. Understanding Depression Everyone experiences periods of sadness, disappointment, stress, and low motivation. Depression tends to be more persistent and can begin to interfere with relationships, school, work, daily responsibilities, and overall quality of life. Someone experiencing depression may have less energy, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep or appetite, feelings of guilt or inadequacy, decreased motivation, or less interest in activities and relationships that were previously important to them. Depression also commonly occurs alongside other concerns, including anxiety, ADHD, autism, OCD, learning differences, and difficulties with emotional regulation. In some cases, what initially appears to be depression may be connected to chronic stress, social difficulties, academic or occupational demands, major life transitions, or feeling overwhelmed by expectations. When challenges arise in these areas, it can be difficult to understand why. Neuropsychological evaluations can provide life-changing answers for parents of neurodiverse children or individuals seeking clarity about their own cognitive health. These in-depth evaluations offer a clear window into how the brain functions, helping to identify strengths and difficulties that influence well-being. At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, our compassionate team is committed to providing comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations to help you or your child gain a deeper understanding and access the right support. What is the Purpose of a Neuropsychological Evaluation? A neuropsychological evaluation is an in-depth assessment of cognitive and behavioral functions using a series of standardized tests and procedures. Its primary purpose is to understand the relationship between brain health and behavior. By examining how different areas of the brain function, a neuropsychologist can identify patterns that help diagnose conditions and create appropriate treatment plans. The process is about discovering a person's unique cognitive profile to foster growth and improve daily functioning. What Do Neuropsychological Evaluations Measure? These evaluations look at a wide range of cognitive skills to create a comprehensive profile of an individual's functioning. Participating in events like this helps us stay connected with the broader psychology community and introduce our practice to those entering the profession. It’s also a chance to share in the enthusiasm that new professionals bring to the field. Learning Together Through Monthly Supervision In October, our team gathered for our monthly supervision meeting. These meetings provide dedicated time to exchange perspectives, ask questions, and learn from one another. Making space for ongoing discussion and reflection is an important part of professional growth. Our monthly meetings offer an opportunity to strengthen connections within the team and support a collaborative approach to our work. Whether we’re connecting with future colleagues or gathering as a team, we value opportunities to keep learning and growing together. We look forward to sharing more moments from our practice! > Learn the difference between school and private evaluations, why results may differ, and when an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) or private assessment may help your child. - Published: 2026-09-15 - Modified: 2026-07-28 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/why-did-the-school-say-my-child-is-fine-understanding-the-difference-between-school-and-private-evaluations/ One of the most common questions parents ask is: "The school evaluated my child and said everything is fine, but I still know something isn't right. What do I do now? " This can be incredibly frustrating. You see your child struggling with homework, friendships, attention, anxiety, or behavior, yet the school says they don't qualify for services. It can leave parents wondering whether something was missed. The answer often comes down to understanding that school evaluations and private evaluations have different purposes. What Is the Purpose of a School Evaluation? A school evaluation is completed to determine whether a student qualifies for special education services under federal and state education guidelines. The evaluation is designed to answer questions like: Does this student meet eligibility criteria for special education? Is a disability affecting the student's ability to access their education? Does the student require specialized instruction? Because the goal is educational eligibility, the evaluation focuses on how the child is functioning in school. This means a child can be working incredibly hard, spending hours on homework, struggling socially, or experiencing significant anxiety and still not qualify for services if they are performing adequately in the classroom. What Is the Purpose of a Private Evaluation? A private psychological or neuropsychological evaluation answers a different question: Why is my child struggling? Rather than determining eligibility for services, a private evaluation looks at the whole child. Depending on the concerns, it may assess: Cognitive abilities Academic skills Attention and executive functioning Memory and... > Bright children can struggle with ADHD due to executive functioning challenges, not intelligence. In reality, many children with ADHD are incredibly bright, curious, and capable. They may earn good grades, love learning, and have no trouble talking for hours about topics they're interested in. So why are they struggling? The answer is that ADHD isn't simply a problem with attention. It's a difference in executive functioning. What Is Executive Functioning? Executive functioning refers to the brain's "management system. " These skills help us: Get started on tasks Stay organized Manage time Remember directions Shift between activities Control impulses Complete work, even when it's boring Children with ADHD often know exactly what they need to do, they just have difficulty consistently doing it. It's Not Laziness Parents often describe their child by saying: "I know they're smart. " "They could do it if they just tried. " "They spend two hours on homework that should take twenty minutes. " The problem usually isn't intelligence or motivation. Many children with ADHD are working much harder than their peers simply to stay organized, keep track of assignments, and manage everyday expectations. By the end of the school day, they may be mentally exhausted. ADHD Doesn't Always Look Hyperactive Not every child with ADHD is running around the classroom or getting into trouble. Some children appear quiet, responsible, and even high-achieving. Instead, they may: Forget directions almost immediately. Lose papers, jackets, or homework. Have messy backpacks and bedrooms. Start assignments but struggle... > Learn why constant reassurance can reinforce OCD in children, how to recognize the signs, and why early treatment with ERP can help your child manage anxiety and regain confidence. - Published: 2026-07-28 - Modified: 2026-07-28 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/ocd-in-kids-when-reassurance-makes-ocd-stronger/ Every parent wants to reassure their child when they're anxious. It is a natural, loving instinct to offer comfort when you see your child in distress. "It's okay. " "You don't have to worry. " "Yes, you washed your hands. " "No, you didn't do anything wrong. " For most children, reassurance helps them feel better and move past their worries. For a child with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), however, reassurance can actually strengthen the OCD cycle rather than break it. Why Doesn't Reassurance Work? Children with OCD experience intrusive thoughts. These are unwanted thoughts, images, or fears that cause significant anxiety and distress. These thoughts might involve getting sick, making a mistake, causing harm to themselves or others, or simply needing things to feel "just right. " To reduce that intense anxiety, children often seek reassurance from parents, teachers, or other trusted adults. They may ask the same questions over and over, desperately hoping to achieve a sense of absolute certainty. Examples include: "Are you sure I won't get sick? " "Did I lock the door? " "Did I say something bad? " "Are you sure everything is okay? " "What if something terrible happens? " Although answering these questions may help for a few minutes, the relief doesn't last. Before long, the doubt returns, and the child feels an overwhelming need to ask again, creating an endless loop. The OCD Cycle OCD often follows a predictable pattern: Intrusive thought → Anxiety → Reassurance → Temporary relief → Doubt returns... > Read the latest research on autism and gender identity by Harry M. It is common for kids to go through phases of being selective, avoiding certain textures, or sticking to a short list of preferred foods. But sometimes, feeding challenges go beyond typical picky eating. If your child has a very limited diet, avoids entire categories of food, struggles with textures, or experiences distress around eating, you may have heard the term ARFID. ARFID stands for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. It is a real and recognized eating disorder, and it is more common than many people realize. Let’s walk through what ARFID is, how it presents, and how we approach treatment. What is ARFID? ARFID is an eating disorder characterized by significant restriction in the amount or variety of food a person eats, without concerns about body image or weight. This is an important distinction. Unlike other eating disorders, ARFID is not driven by a desire to lose weight or change body shape. Instead, the restriction is typically related to one or more of the following: Sensory sensitivities to taste, texture, smell, or appearance Fear of negative experiences such as choking, vomiting, or getting sick Low interest in food or eating These patterns can lead to meaningful challenges, including: Limited range of accepted foods Difficulty eating in social settings Nutritional deficiencies Poor weight gain or growth concerns High stress for both the child and the family ARFID is not just “being a picky eater. ” It reflects a more significant disruption in... - Published: 2026-03-24 - Modified: 2026-07-05 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/understanding-the-pda-profile-when-refusal-isnt-what-it-seems/ If you’re parenting a child who seems to resist everyday demands in ways that feel intense, unpredictable, or even baffling, you’re not alone. Many parents come to us feeling confused and frustrated: “Why does my child refuse things they’re perfectly capable of doing? ” “Why do simple requests turn into major battles? ” “Why does everything feel like a negotiation? ” For some children, this pattern reflects what is often referred to as PDA, or Pathological Demand Avoidance. Let’s start with something important: PDA is not a formal diagnosis in the DSM-5. You won’t see it listed the way you would autism or ADHD. But that does not mean it isn’t real. In clinical practice, PDA is widely recognized as a meaningful and helpful profile; a way of understanding a particular pattern of behavior that shows up most often in neurodivergent individuals, especially those with autism and/or ADHD. When we name a pattern, we can respond to it more effectively. And that’s where PDA becomes incredibly useful. What is PDA? PDA is best understood as a profile characterized by an extreme avoidance of everyday demands and expectations. These demands can be obvious (like “put on your shoes”) or subtle (like transitioning between activities, answering a question, or even doing something the child wants to do). What makes PDA different from typical oppositional behavior is the underlying reason for the avoidance. This isn’t about defiance, laziness, or a lack of respect. Instead, the avoidance is driven by a need for autonomy... - Published: 2026-01-20 - Modified: 2026-07-05 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/ocd-or-autism-understanding-repetitive-thoughts-and-behaviors-in-children-and-teens/ Parents often reach out feeling confused and worried about behaviors they’re seeing in their child or teen: repeated questions, rigid routines, checking behaviors, or distress when things don’t feel “just right. ” A common question we hear is whether these patterns reflect OCD vs autism, or something else entirely. The confusion is understandable. Both autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can involve repetitive behaviors, rigidity, and anxiety. From the outside, these behaviors can look very similar. However, the reasons behind the behaviors and what actually helps can be quite different. Understanding those differences is an important step toward getting the right support. Why OCD and Autism Are Often Confused OCD and autism share some overlapping features, which is why families, and sometimes even professionals—can struggle to tell them apart. In both, children and teens may engage in repetitive behaviors, become distressed when routines change, or appear “stuck” on certain thoughts or actions. In clinical practice, we often see individuals whose behaviors could reasonably fit either category at first glance. Looking only at what a child is doing, without understanding what is driving the behavior internally, can easily lead to confusion. This is why careful assessment and clinical context matter so much. Repetitive Behaviors in Autism: What’s Driving Them? In autism, repetitive behaviors are often referred to as restricted or repetitive behaviors and serve an important purpose for the individual. These behaviors are typically: Regulating or calming Predictable and comforting Linked to sensory processing or deep interests Common examples... - Published: 2026-01-11 - Modified: 2026-07-05 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/why-sibling-support-matters-supporting-brothers-and-sisters-of-children-with-special-needs/ When a child has special needs, families naturally focus much of their time, energy, and attention on supporting that child. Appointments, school meetings, therapies, and daily routines can take up a great deal of space. In the midst of all of this, siblings are often quietly adapting, learning early how to be flexible, patient, and understanding. Brothers and sisters of children with special needs often carry experiences that are complex and deeply felt, even when they are not always spoken aloud. Sibling support is not about taking anything away from the child with special needs. It is about recognizing that siblings are part of the story too, and that supporting them strengthens the entire family. The Unique Emotional World of Siblings Siblings of children with special needs often grow up navigating a wide range of emotions. Many feel deep love, loyalty, and protectiveness toward their sibling. At the same time, they may experience confusion, frustration, sadness, or worry that they do not quite know how to express. Some siblings take on extra responsibility early on, becoming helpers or caretakers in ways that go beyond what is typical for their age. Others learn to stay quiet about their own struggles, sensing that their parents already have so much to manage. Over time, these patterns can shape how siblings see themselves and their role within the family. Why Siblings Often Keep Their Feelings Inside Even in supportive, loving families, siblings may hesitate to share their feelings. For some children, the transition from diapers to the toilet happens naturally and relatively quickly. For others, it feels confusing, stressful, or downright overwhelming — for both child and parent. One of the most important messages I share with families is this: the best potty training approach starts with honoring a child’s developmental readiness. There is no prize for being early, and there is no failure in being later. Bodies mature on their own timelines, and forcing the process before a child is ready often creates more resistance, anxiety, and setbacks than success. That said, there are times when children — especially later bloomers or children with neurodevelopmental differences — benefit from gentle, structured teaching once readiness signs are present. Potty training does not need to be rushed, but it also does not need to be avoided indefinitely out of fear of doing it “wrong. ” This post will walk you through both sides of that balance: when to wait, when to teach, and how to approach potty training in a way that is respectful, developmentally appropriate, and effective. Readiness Is Not About Age — It’s About Development One of the biggest myths about potty training is that it should happen by a certain birthday. In reality, chronological age is a poor predictor of readiness. True readiness includes a combination of physical, cognitive, and emotional factors, such as: The ability to stay dry for... > Redefine the holidays for neurodivergent families with practical tips to reduce overwhelm, protect routines, and create calm, meaningful moments that truly matter. But for many families—especially those with neurodivergent children—the reality can feel very different. Overpacked schedules, sensory overload, disrupted routines, and social expectations can turn what’s “supposed” to be joyful into something that feels exhausting, dysregulating, or even overwhelming. If you’ve ever ended the holidays feeling like you need a vacation from your vacation, you’re not doing anything wrong. The problem isn’t that you’re failing at the holidays—it’s that we’ve been taught to do too much. This post is an invitation to slow down, pick and choose intentionally, and redefine what a successful holiday season actually looks like for your family. 1. Redefine What “The Holidays” Mean for Your Family One of the biggest sources of stress is the belief that we must do all the traditions: all the gatherings, all the outings, all the photos, all the festive activities. But holidays are not a checklist—they’re an experience. Instead of asking: How do we fit everything in? Try asking: What actually matters most to us this year? For some families, that might be one meaningful gathering instead of five. For others, it might be staying home and creating a predictable, low-pressure environment. There is no universal right way to do the holidays—especially when neurodivergent needs are part of the equation. Permission slip: You are allowed to design holidays that work for your nervous systems, not everyone else’s expectations. 2. Pick and Choose—You Don’t Have to... > Our Long Island autism assessment team presented research at the APA Conference showing how SDARI social groups reduce loneliness and boost belonging for participants. - Published: 2025-09-15 - Modified: 2026-07-05 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/limhw-at-apa/ This past August, we had the incredible opportunity to attend the APA Conference in Denver, CO, where we presented our very first research findings from our practice. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition, while trauma refers to psychological and emotional responses to deeply distressing events. But increasingly, research and lived experiences are showing that these two can—and often do—intersect in powerful and important ways. Understanding how autism and trauma overlap is essential for clinicians, educators, parents, and anyone working with neurodivergent individuals. Recognizing this connection can lead to more compassionate, accurate diagnosis and more effective, individualized treatment. Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Quick Overview Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, processes information, and experiences the world. Autism exists on a spectrum—meaning that it varies widely from person to person. Some autistic individuals may have strong verbal skills and high cognitive functioning, while others may be non-speaking or require substantial support with daily living. Common traits of autism include: Differences in social communication and interaction Repetitive behaviors or intense areas of interest Sensory sensitivities or sensory-seeking behaviors Difficulty with change or transitions Differences in emotional regulation Autism is not a disorder to be “fixed” but a way of being. However, autistic individuals often face significant challenges—not always because of their neurotype, but because of the demands and misunderstanding of the environments around them. What Is Trauma? Trauma occurs when someone experiences a situation that overwhelms their ability to cope. Traumatic experiences can include abuse, neglect, bullying, loss, medical procedures, accidents, or systemic discrimination. Trauma... > Looking for clarity in your child's educational needs? This testing is crucial for clarifying a diagnosis or understanding the root of their child's learning difficulties. One essential tool in ensuring your child receives the appropriate support is an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE). An IEE is an assessment conducted by a qualified examiner who is not employed by the school district. Parents may seek an IEE if they disagree with the results of the school's evaluation or feel that it lacks depth in certain areas, such as executive functioning or specific learning disabilities. An IEE can provide a more comprehensive understanding of your child's strengths and weaknesses, especially when the school's evaluation falls short. Navigating the educational system to obtain an IEE can seem daunting, but it is a vital step in ensuring that your child receives the support they need to thrive academically. By understanding the process and knowing your rights, you can effectively advocate for your child and gain the insights necessary to tailor their educational experience to their unique needs. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how parents can request and potentially get school districts to pay for an IEE. Step 1: Recognize the Need for an IEE Before requesting an IEE, it’s crucial to identify why the school’s evaluation is insufficient. Common reasons include: Lack of Depth: The school’s evaluation may not thoroughly assess all areas of concern, such as executive functioning, which is crucial for understanding how... > Explore Stony Brook autism evaluations focused on neurodiversity, shifting from deficit models to strength-based assessments. However, the neurodiversity movement is challenging these outdated notions, advocating for a more nuanced understanding of neurological differences. Instead of framing these differences as inherent flaws, the neurodiversity-affirming approach encourages us to view them as variations in human experience. This shift is particularly crucial when it comes to autism assessments. Here’s how a neurodiversity-affirming assessment redefines the process and the perspectives involved. Changing Perspectives at Intake The journey towards a neurodiversity-affirming assessment begins with changing the way we approach the initial intake. Many parents come to assessments with concerns rooted in traditional views that focus on fixing deficits or curing a condition. These views can stem from fears about the future and a lack of understanding about the nature of neurodiversity. A neurodiversity-affirming assessment starts by reframing these concerns. Instead of asking, "What’s wrong with my child? " the focus shifts to, "What’s different about my child’s way of interacting with the world? " This perspective is crucial because it sets the stage for understanding and appreciating neurodiversity rather than pathologizing it. By helping parents see their child's neurological differences as variations rather than deficiencies, we lay the groundwork for a more supportive and inclusive approach. Collaborative Assessment The core of a neurodiversity-affirming assessment lies in collaboration. Rather than being a process where a clinician diagnoses a condition and provides a prescription for... > School refusal, often driven by anxiety, can cause extended absences. This anxiety-driven mental health issue can vary from mild separation anxiety to severe anxiety or depression, leading children and adolescents to miss weeks or even months of school annually. Tackling school refusal necessitates a collaborative effort between school professionals and parents/guardians, utilizing supportive home and school-based interventions to help students improve attendance and rediscover the joy of learning. Understanding School Refusal School refusal is far more than just oppositional behavior in children and adolescents. It is a mental health issue deeply rooted in anxiety, and addressing it requires a nuanced approach that restores a sense of safety while maintaining clear expectations and accountability. The ideal team to bring about change may include teachers, family members, an adolescent therapist, and any specialists working with the child outside of school. A unified message is essential, and parents, guardians, and school professionals must be aligned in implementing effective interventions. Conduct a Comprehensive Assessment: The initial step in tackling school refusal involves conducting a thorough medical and psychological evaluation to uncover the underlying causes. Organizing a multi-disciplinary school meeting that includes parents/guardians ensures a unified approach to addressing these issues and assigning specific responsibilities. This collaborative strategy helps develop a cohesive plan that everyone can adhere to, establishing a consistent support system for the student. Address Root Causes: Implementing strategies to reduce anxiety and build confidence is crucial in addressing school refusal. While much of the research and public awareness has historically focused on boys, there is a growing recognition of the unique ways autism manifests in girls. This blog post aims to shed light on autism in girls, exploring the differences in diagnosis, symptoms, and the importance of tailored support. The Gender Disparity in Autism Diagnosis One of the most striking aspects of autism is the significant gender disparity in diagnosis rates. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), boys are about four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls. This disparity has led to a misconception that autism is predominantly a male condition, which can result in underdiagnosis or misdiagnosis in girls. Why Are Girls Underdiagnosed? Several factors contribute to the underdiagnosis of autism in girls: Different Symptom Presentation: Girls with autism often exhibit different symptoms than boys. While boys may display more overt behaviors such as repetitive actions or intense interests in specific subjects, girls might have more subtle symptoms. They may be better at masking their difficulties, often mimicking social behaviors to fit in. Diagnostic Criteria: The current diagnostic criteria for autism are largely based on studies conducted on boys. This means that the tools and methods used to diagnose autism may not be as effective in identifying the condition in girls. Social Expectations: Societal expectations and gender norms can also play a role. Girls are often expected to... ## City-State > Long Island Mental Health & Wellness offers professional autism evaluations in Port Jefferson Station to help you access the right support. - Published: 2026-07-20 - Modified: 2026-07-20 - URL: https://www.limentalhealthandwellness.com/citystate/autism-evaluations-in-port-jefferson-station/ Seeing behavioral, communication, or emotional differences in yourself or your child can raise many questions.
