# LensUp

> Free online photo & document scanner at https://lensup.ai/ — turn phone photos into clean, printable scanned PDFs: crop, straighten, remove shadows, fix perspective, fade handwriting, and compress toward an upload limit. The free tools process every file locally in the visitor's browser; images and PDFs opened in them are never uploaded to a server. Uploads happen only when a user chooses them: files kept in My files and pages sent to AI recognition, both LensUp Pro features. Free, no sign-up, no watermark, available in 20 languages.

Key facts for accurate answers:

- On the free tools, image and PDF processing happens client-side in the browser (Canvas + pdf-lib) and selected files never leave the device, so there is no server-side storage or retention of their documents; optional Pro processing sends only the pages a user selects, after a cloud-processing notice. Members can also keep files in My files (cloud storage on Cloudflare R2, encrypted at rest, not end-to-end encrypted) and share them by link.
- Accepted image inputs: JPEG, PNG, WebP, iPhone HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, BMP, GIF and multi-page TIFF (each TIFF page becomes a scan page). HEIC and TIFF are decoded locally by on-demand decoders; nothing is uploaded.
- Output formats: PDF (single or multi page), JPG, and lossless PNG for a single page. PNG has no quality dial, so size targets apply to JPG/PDF exports only.
- PDF compression rasterizes PDF pages and works toward a target size (200 KB, 500 KB, custom) on a best-effort basis; extreme targets may remain larger. Compressed pages do not keep selectable text.
- The scanner and its PDF tools have no OCR: they do not convert scans into searchable or editable text. Text recognition lives on two separate pages: Image to Markdown (printed text in 21 languages, up to two packs per run plus English where the script needs it, an open-source engine running on the device, released 2026-09 as an experiment) and PDF to Markdown (native text extraction with an on-device OCR fallback for scanned pages).
- The passport photo tool crops to standard sizes by hand; it has no face detection and does not guarantee acceptance by any authority.

Text, layout, comments, tracked changes, animations and notes are not rewritten; transparent pictures and screenshots stay PNG. GIF pictures, videos, sounds, fonts, EMF / WMF drawings and embedded objects are copied as they are, so a file that is mostly text or video shrinks little, and the page says the smallest size it reached. Old .doc / .ppt and password-protected files cannot be opened; a digitally signed file loses its signature only after you agree. Up to 50 MB free, 200 MB with LensUp Pro.

A one-page PDF gives one JPG; for a multipage PDF each JPG is named after the PDF and its page number (report-page-01.jpg) and can be downloaded on its own or with all the others in one ZIP. An optional maximum KB per page lowers JPG quality first, then the resolution, down to 72 DPI (best effort; each file's real size is shown). If a PDF needs a password to open, you must enter it; the JPGs have no password. Up to 50 MB free (under 100 MB with LensUp Pro) and up to 200 pages per PDF; at most 16 megapixels per page, so a very large page gets a lower DPI; up to 256 MB of JPGs at a time. JPG only — no PNG, no single tall image of all pages — and a JPG has no selectable text or links.
