A pianist with 22 albums and another on the way, her restorative style of music streams to 60 million online listeners. She breeds champion poodles, and writes children’s books. Then the National Symphony Orchestra commissioned her to compose a new work to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The Florida Orchestra performs the piece American Promise in mid October.  - [Jeneba Kanneh-Mason: part of the family redefining classical music](https://floridaorchestra.org/jeneba-kanneh-mason-part-of-the-family-redefining-classical-music/): Please note: Pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason has withdrawn from concerts due to a minor injury. Copland’s Appalachian Spring Suite replaces Florence Price’s Piano Concerto. - [Afterthoughts: Sold-out concert wraps up a Florida Orchestra season of high notes](https://floridaorchestra.org/afterthoughts-sold-out-concert-wraps-up-a-florida-orchestra-season-of-high-notes/): The coda of any Florida Orchestra season is often a stirring affair, an emotional tug-and-pull to celebrate all the classic moments from the past eight months. This was the case last year, when the group closed with an epic performance of Mahler’s Third Symphony, and the year before, with another Mahler crown, the Resurrection. They still reverberate. - [Triple your pleasure with U.S. premiere of concerto for three trombones](https://floridaorchestra.org/triple-your-pleasure-with-u-s-premiere-of-concerto-for-three-trombones/): As a listener, it’s always intriguing to hear a new work, more so when it features an instrument that rarely solos on stage: the trombone. - [Meet our first new principal timpanist in 40 years: Hamza Able](https://floridaorchestra.org/meet-our-first-new-principal-timpanist-in-40-years-hamza-able/): When Hamza Able wields the mallets to launch the scherzo from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony this weekend (March 27-29), lots of ears will perk up. That’s because something will be different: Able isn’t the familiar face we’ve known for nearly 40 years. - [Oh, the joy of performing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony](https://floridaorchestra.org/oh-the-joy-of-performing-beethovens-ninth-symphony/): Demanding. Strenuous. Complex. And ultimately rewarding. - [TFO principal oboist’s never-ending quest for the perfect reed](https://floridaorchestra.org/tfo-principal-oboists-never-ending-quest-for-the-perfect-reed/): Mitchell Kuhn would have made a good auto mechanic – he’s an expert at tuning up. But he chose a different path as a musician, recently landing a new position as principal oboe with The Florida Orchestra. - [TFO embraces the intoxicating power of Bruckner](https://floridaorchestra.org/tfo-embraces-the-intoxicating-power-of-bruckner/): Is there such a thing as a cathedral in music? - [Pianist’s strategy for Mozart: Don’t overthink it](https://floridaorchestra.org/pianists-strategy-for-mozart-dont-overthink-it/): Imagine you’re a classical pianist in demand all over the world. Every time you walk on stage, your job is to reawaken a work of art and make it sound fresh for an audience. - [Afterthoughts: Holiday Brass concert brings bold beauty to 100-year-old church](https://floridaorchestra.org/afterthoughts-holiday-brass-concert-brings-bold-beauty-to-100-year-old-church/): For 100 years, music has echoed through the nave of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Clearwater, a historical space of serenity since opening in 1925. Countless groups have performed under its vaulted ceiling, and last weekend The Florida Orchestra’s Holiday Brass concert entertained a sold-out, receptive crowd that braved an evening rainstorm. - [Handel’s Messiah proves enduring value of music in the community](https://floridaorchestra.org/handels-messiah-proves-enduring-value-of-music-in-the-community/): Two hundred and eighty-four years is plenty of time for something to go out of style or be swept under the rug of history.  - [TFO brass brings a crescendo of holiday cheer](https://floridaorchestra.org/tfo-brass-players-tune-up-a-festive-prelude-for-the-holidays/): Consider it a brassy affair. - [USF and The Florida Orchestra unite to advance music education and community connection](https://floridaorchestra.org/usf_and_the_florida_orchestra_unite/): Credits: Michelle Sabo-Sherwood, College of Design, Art & Performance; Kelly Smith, Chief Communications Officer, The Florida Orchestra; Photography and Video by Bryce Womeldurf, College of Design, Art & Performance - [Pianist finds more than Ode to Joy in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy](https://floridaorchestra.org/pianist-finds-more-than-ode-to-joy-in-beethovens-choral-fantasy/): If you were lucky enough to have a ticket to the concert at Vienna’s Theater-an-der-Wien on Dec. 22, 1808, the stub would one day be worth a fortune at auction. It was, after all, a night unlike any other in music history: a four-hour extravaganza that gave birth to some of Beethoven’s most beloved masterpieces. - [Timpanist’s final bows end 30-year percussion brotherhood](https://floridaorchestra.org/timpanists-final-bows/): John Bannon is laying down the sticks. - [Pianist, poet, bodybuilder: Tzimon Barto retunes classical conventions](https://floridaorchestra.org/pianist-poet-bodybuilder-tzimon-barto-retunes-classical-conventions/): Aaron Copland’s majestic Third Symphony anchors The Florida Orchestra’s latest Hough Family Foundation Masterworks program, but all eyes and ears will be on Tzimon Barto as he sits down this weekend (May 9-10) to play Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F. - [Hollywood meets classical in Korngold’s Violin Concerto](https://floridaorchestra.org/hollywood-meets-classical-in-korngolds-violin-concerto/): Erich Korngold may be best known as a composer of Hollywood film scores from the 1930s, but his Violin Concerto has grown into a cult favorite for its unabashed lyricism. Korngold, who left Austria for California before the Second World War, earned a reputation as a musical swashbuckler, and rightly so: He pioneered the symphonic approach and use of leitmotivs in movies, inspiring generations that followed, including John Williams. - [Sax goes classical in jazzy concerto honoring Coltrane](https://floridaorchestra.org/sax-goes-classical-in-jazzy-concerto-honoring-coltrane/): We don’t associate the great jazzman John Coltrane with the symphony orchestra, but the two find common ground this weekend in an imaginative piece by Guillaume Connesson, composer in residence at the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. - [Afterthoughts: Yo-Yo Ma delights sold-out house in annual TFO fundraiser](https://floridaorchestra.org/afterthoughts-yo-yo-ma-delights-sold-out-house-in-annual-tfo-fundraiser/): Some use the words gob-smacked or mesmerized to describe a musician with preternatural talent, but Yo-Yo Ma renders such adjectives useless. In fact, the world’s most popular cellist commands an emotional response free of description, as his performances are best appreciated without the clutter of words in their wake. - [Dig into a choral masterpiece with TFO: Belshazzar’s Feast](https://floridaorchestra.org/dig-into-a-choral-masterpiece-with-tfo-belshazzars-feast/): Expect a full course in sound. - [It takes a fine ‘chef’ to program a delicious musical meal](https://floridaorchestra.org/it-takes-a-fine-chef-to-program-a-delicious-musical-meal/): Like a chef at a good restaurant, an orchestra conductor creates a meal plan, a diet of music to sustain the players, audiences and box office. - [How to pursue perfection: Geneva Lewis tackles Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto](https://floridaorchestra.org/how-to-pursue-perfection-geneva-lewis-tackles-mendelssohns-violin-concerto/): Geneva Lewis has one of the toughest jobs in town this weekend. In two Hough Family Foundation Masterworks performances with The Florida Orchestra, she will try to capture perfection in what is often considered a flawless piece of music: Felix Mendelssohn’s beloved Violin Concerto. - [Discovering Dawson’s powerful Negro Folk Symphony](https://floridaorchestra.org/discovering-dawsons-powerful-negro-folk-symphony/): When the Czech composer Antonin Dvořák visited the United States in 1892, he believed the future of its so-called classical music should embrace an original source: Black spirituals. - [TFO teaches violin, cello to teens in detention centers](https://floridaorchestra.org/tfo-teaches-violin-cello-to-youths-in-detention-centers/): For over 57 years, The Florida Orchestra has shared the beauty of music with audiences in Tampa Bay, showcasing music’s power to move, connect and inspire. Driven by a commitment to serve the whole community, the orchestra has brought music to unexpected places — hospitals, parks, airports and even the Super Bowl. Now, it is extending its reach further through its new Detention Center Strings Program, which offers violin and cello lessons to detained teens at Tampa Residential Facility. You can experience the results this Friday (Nov. 22) in a lobby performance before TFO’s concert at the Straz Center in Tampa. - [Playing by memory: Do soloists ever forget onstage?](https://floridaorchestra.org/playing-by-memory-do-soloists-ever-forget-onstage/): Imagine you’re a famous pianist performing a concerto in a sold-out hall. You know the piece by heart because you’ve played it dozens of times without a score. - [Afterthoughts: Hearing Beethoven through the mind of Mahler](https://floridaorchestra.org/afterthoughts-hearing-beethoven-through-mahler/): Why mess with perfection? - [Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5: Intensity personified](https://floridaorchestra.org/beethoven-5-intensity-personified/): Those famous four notes first burst into our world 216 years ago and they’ve been reverberating ever since. - [For Florida Orchestra drummer, Bolero beats eternal](https://floridaorchestra.org/for-florida-orchestra-drummer-bolero-beats-eternal/): Classical music, despite its pleasant tempo, has its share of endurance tests. Just ask the drummer playing Bolero. - [TFO Soundwaves: The joy of a smaller Mahler](https://floridaorchestra.org/tfo-soundwaves-the-joy-of-a-smaller-mahler/): Gustav Mahler was a guy who thought big. - [Auditioning for All-State? The Florida Orchestra can help](https://floridaorchestra.org/auditioning-for-all-state-the-florida-orchestra-can-help/): Note: It’s that time of year when students return to class – and realize All-State auditions are just around the corner. The Florida Orchestra is here to help, with plenty of audition tips and practice videos. Read this letter from TFO Associate Principal Bass Paul Nemeth to music students. - [My summer teaching string instruments to middle schoolers](https://floridaorchestra.org/my-summer-teaching-string-instruments-to-middle-schoolers/): By Sebastian Stefanovic TFO Violist In May, I played my last concert of the Florida Orchestra’s season — Gustav Mahler’s epic Second Symphony, “Resurrection.” - [All 13 mystery pieces unveiled](https://floridaorchestra.org/all-13-mystery-pieces-unveiled/): For the first time, this season every Hough Family Foundation Masterworks concert had a surprise inside. Music Director Michael Francis dubbed them mystery pieces, short works personally chosen by him to enhance the program in a unique way. Some were showstoppers. Others were lighthearted fun – one starred Cora, a musician’s dog. Many sparked great conversations. And most were really, really hard not to divulge ahead of time – like a gift we couldn’t wait for you to unwrap. - [Afterthoughts: Season finale resurrects the magnificence of Mahler](https://floridaorchestra.org/afterthoughts-season-finale-resurrects-the-magnificence-of-mahler/): Many music lovers, myself included, have been afflicted by an incurable condition known as Mahleria, contracted from listening to the symphonies of Gustav Mahler. The symptoms are pronounced: euphoria, occasional despair and physical and mental exhaustion. - [Double your pleasure with Brahms Double Concerto](https://floridaorchestra.org/double-your-pleasure-with-brahms-double-concerto/): It seems odd, or ironic, that the last major orchestral work by Johannes Brahms is among his least played and appreciated, a piece many people admire rather than love. Unlike his four symphonies, this creation spends more time on the shelf than on stage, making us wonder if Brahms had run out of gas 10 years before his death − or simply wrote something listeners fail to grasp. - [A lullaby of heavenly peace in Faure’s masterpiece](https://floridaorchestra.org/a-lullaby-of-heavenly-peace-in-faures-masterpiece/): The Requiem of Gabriel Fauré has been called a “lullaby,’’ an apt description of music far removed from the hellfire of other treatments of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead. - [Chamber Series Afterthoughts: Intimate yet powerful experience](https://floridaorchestra.org/chamber-series-afterthoughts-intimate-yet-powerful/): As a concert experience, the Sunday matinee is a preferable choice for many Florida Orchestra patrons, as the leisurely pace, lack of traffic and lure of an early dinner make for a nice wrap on the weekend. - [Violist Sarah McElravy brings universal language of Mozart](https://floridaorchestra.org/violist-sarah-mcelravy-brings-universal-language-of-mozart/): We all remember the 1984 movie Amadeus, which depicts the creative and tragically short life of Mozart. In one scene, the composer leans over a pool table, rolling a ball back and forth against the side rails as he jots notes on a sheet of paper. The resulting masterpiece could have been a symphony, concerto, or the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola. - [Betting on Beethoven: Which is greater, the Eroica or Ninth Symphony?](https://floridaorchestra.org/eroica-or-ninth/): What is the most influential piece of music of all time? What work changed everything after its first performance and forced the world to take notice? - [Can a performer get in the way of a composer?](https://floridaorchestra.org/can-a-performer-get-in-the-way-of-a-composer/): Years ago, I attended a concert at the University of South Florida Sun Dome, a lavishly advertised appearance by the late, great tenor, Luciano Pavarotti. The place was packed, some seats selling at $500 a pop, and his fans swooned over every note. - [Afterthoughts: Classical blends with jazz for riveting, rousing Rhapsody in Blue and more](https://floridaorchestra.org/afterthoughts-classical-blends-with-jazz-for-riveting-rousing-rhapsody-in-blue-and-more/): It was 100 years ago this month when a slim, well-dressed 25-year-old man walked on stage at New York City's Aeolian Hall, sat at the piano, and altered the course of American music. - [Michael Francis is here to stay through 2030](https://floridaorchestra.org/michael-francis-is-here-to-stay-through-2030/): - [Violinist tunes up a rarity for Barber concerto](https://floridaorchestra.org/violinist-tunes-up-for-barber-concerto/): We all know Samuel Barber through his famous Adagio for Strings, arguably the most-performed piece of music by an American composer. But Barber, who died in 1981, rued its pervasiveness in concert and on radio and television, in part because so many of his other scores took back seat. - [From Mozart to Tchaikovsky: Violinist Gluzman’s secret for balance, strength](https://floridaorchestra.org/gluzmans-secret-for-balance-strength/): You don’t want to ask Vadim Gluzman if he has a favorite violin concerto among the dozens he plays all over the world. He will just answer your question with an equally perplexing one. - [Why is Handel’s Messiah so popular after nearly 300 years?](https://floridaorchestra.org/why-is-handels-messiah-so-popular-after-nearly-300-years/): Could any single piece of music be more popular and performed than Handel’s Messiah? - [Is Brahms’ First Symphony the best first?](https://floridaorchestra.org/is-brahms-first-symphony-the-best-first/): Of all the hundreds, if not thousands, of composers over the centuries who wrote symphonies, all have one thing in common: They began with a first. Some would write two or three, others more than a hundred, but all started out of the gate with an initial No. 1. - [Baritone Jubilant Sykes shares the simple gift of spirituals with TFO](https://floridaorchestra.org/baritone-jubilant-sykes-shares-the-simple-gift-of-spirituals-with-tfo/): Consider it a simple gift. - [Opening night afterthoughts: The big bang of percussion, The Planets](https://floridaorchestra.org/opening-night-afterthoughts-the-big-bang-of-percussion-the-planets/): Boy, am I feeling old. The opening of every music season takes me yet another year from my very first Florida Orchestra concert, when the musicians kicked off the 1981-82 season. They were known as the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony back then, and Irwin Hoffman stood at the podium in the University of Tampa’s old McKay Auditorium. - [TFO welcomes 9 new musicians, including principal oboe and bass](https://floridaorchestra.org/tfo-welcomes-9-new-musicians/): With the new season comes nine new musicians for their first full year with The Florida Orchestra – including two key positions: Mark Debski as principal oboe and Ryan Sujdak as principal bass. - [Chelsea Gallo promoted to resident conductor](https://floridaorchestra.org/chelsea-gallo-promoted-to-resident-conductor/): After a year with The Florida Orchestra, Chelsea Gallo is being promoted to resident conductor. He brings global experience to lead the state’s largest professional orchestra in a new era of growth in Tampa Bay, joining TFO in August. - [A master of Mozart explores the dark side on the piano](https://floridaorchestra.org/a-master-of-mozart-explores-the-dark-side-on-the-piano/): Dejan Lazić knows a thing or two about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. - [Rare chamber version offers ‘mesmerizing experience’ with Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7](https://floridaorchestra.org/rare-chamber-version/): Mention the name Anton Bruckner and you might expect crickets from friends and two-for-one tickets at the box office. Bruckner can be a tough sell, as his colossal, unhurried works require stamina on both sides of the proscenium. - [After 244 years, neglected composer Joseph Bologne makes his TFO debut](https://floridaorchestra.org/joseph-bologne-makes-his-tfo-debut/): “Who?’’ a friend asked. “Never heard of him.’’ - [Afterthoughts: Spellbound by pianist Joyce Yang in Rachmaninoff 3](https://floridaorchestra.org/afterthoughts-spellbound-by-pianist-joyce-yang-for-rachmaninoff-3/): If you had a front-row seat for Joyce Yang’s performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 last Sunday at the Straz Center, you witnessed a bit of magic. Or, more accurately, you were swept up by an artist’s ability to concentrate on a magical level. - [Pianist Joyce Yang: Rachmaninoff is like ‘preparing for an ultra-marathon’](https://floridaorchestra.org/pianist-joyce-yang-rachmaninoff-is-like-preparing-for-an-ultra-marathon/): Joyce Yang hasn’t climbed Mount Everest, but she’ll need plenty of stamina to reach an equally demanding summit over the next two weeks. - [For TFO’s Dee Moses, ‘retirement’ is full speed ahead](https://floridaorchestra.org/for-tfos-dee-moses-retirement-is-full-speed-ahead/): This weekend is the end of an era in TFO’s bass section. After 47 seasons, Principal Bass Dee Moses is “retiring.” Well, more like “refocusing” his life to make more time for what’s important to him and his family. Even after more than four decades on stage, there’s a lot we don’t know about the man behind the double bass. Think motorcycle fanatic. Lead guitar rocker. - [Warm thoughts on Florida, flying with cellos, Elgar concerto](https://floridaorchestra.org/warm-thoughts-on-florida-flying-with-cellos-elgar-concerto/): Maximilian Hornung, the 37-year-old German cellist, makes his living going from one city to another with his instrument, enjoying invitations from many of the world’s top orchestras and chamber groups. - [TFO violinist Nancy Chang tunes up for inner challenges of playing Mozart](https://floridaorchestra.org/tfo-violinist-nancy-chang-tunes-up-for-inner-challenges-of-playing-mozart/): Nancy Chang might have the toughest job in town this week. As TFO’s associate concertmaster, she’s more than busy studying scores, rehearsing and performing with her colleagues. But for the latest Masterworks program, she tunes up for a bigger challenge: standing in the spotlight to bring Mozart to life. - [Announcing TFO’s new podcast for program notes](https://floridaorchestra.org/announcing-tfos-new-podcast-for-program-notes/): The Florida Orchestra is now one of the first orchestras in the country to provide our audio program notes as a podcast. “SoundWaves with The Florida Orchestra” is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music and more, as well as FloridaOrchestra.org. All free. - [A blazing, unforgettable performance of world-premiere concerto and more](https://floridaorchestra.org/a-blazing-unforgettable-performance/): Visceral is an apt one-word description of The Florida Orchestra’s Masterworks performance last weekend, which included a world premiere by a Tampa Bay composer and a blazing rendition of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. - [Tampa native delves into the creative process for TFO’s new Violin Concerto](https://floridaorchestra.org/tampa-native-delves-into-the-creative/): The Florida Orchestra gives a birth of sorts during its upcoming Masterworks program, a musical child who enters the world on stage right before your ears. - [Pianist Alexandra Dariescu champions women composers, their legacy](https://floridaorchestra.org/pianist-alexandra-dariescu-champions-women-composers-their-legacy/): For centuries, classical music has been akin to a private men’s club. Yes, many gifted performers and composers in the past were women, but the male monopoly and misogyny into the 20th century didn’t exactly inspire female musicians to take up the baton, so to speak. - [Swan Lake meets Dracula: Top 10 classical masterpieces in movies](https://floridaorchestra.org/swan-lake-meets-dracula-top-10-classical-masterpieces-in-movies/): Growing up in Los Angeles as a kid, I was hooked on all the Hollywood monster movies that my liberal parents allowed me to watch on late-night television. My traditional favorites were Frankenstein, Wolfman, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and most anything where radiation from an atomic test turned harmless insects into giant creepy crawlies. - [Carmina Burana Afterthoughts: A rousing start to the season](https://floridaorchestra.org/carmina-burana-afterthoughts-a-rousing-start-to-the-season/): If you attended the Tampa Bay Bucs game and a TFO concert over the weekend, you got a supercharged dose of the same music. - [TFO goes fully digital with concert program pages](https://floridaorchestra.org/tfo-goes-fully-digital-with-concert-program-pages/): As we open our 55th season this week, The Florida Orchestra is making a bold and exciting change that will improve your access to a wealth of concert information while reducing our impact on the environment. Now all concert information will be provided via digital program pages. - [Amadeus Live: The genius of Mozart comes alive with TFO](https://floridaorchestra.org/amadeus-live-the-genius-of-mozart-comes-alive-with-tfo/): Not everyone got to know Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by listening to his masterpieces through concerts and recordings. Millions met him in Miloš Forman’s 1984 film Amadeus, a fictionalized vision of genius brought to life in the very real context of his music. - [An extraordinary gift: Nearly 100-year-old Steinway piano starts new life with student](https://floridaorchestra.org/an-extraordinary-gift-nearly-100-year-old-steinway-piano/): The nearly 100-year-old Steinway & Sons piano stood quiet and alone in the living room of Mari Reive’s empty childhood home in St. Petersburg, where it had been the center of her family’s life since 1964. - [Afterthoughts: Enthralling, creative night of Mozart’s Requiem and so much more](https://floridaorchestra.org/afterthoughts-mozarts-requiem-and-so-much-more/): Florida Orchestra listeners went back in time over the weekend, visiting music dressed in Medieval, Renaissance, Classical and 20th century garb. This was no ordinary program: Teaming up with the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, the orchestra presented an ambitious mix of song and symphonic, all leading up to Mozart’s tragically imperfect Requiem. - [900 years later, female composer’s piece sets mood for Mozart’s Requiem](https://floridaorchestra.org/hildegard-von-bingen-stands-the-test-of-time-for-master-chorale-singer/): It’s not often we hear music from a composer who lived more than 900 years ago, about the time of the Second Crusade and the building the Cathedral of Notre Dame. - [The Florida Orchestra names Chelsea Gallo as assistant conductor](https://floridaorchestra.org/tfo-names-chelsea-gallo-assistant-conductor/): The Florida Orchestra has named rising star Chelsea Gallo as its new assistant conductor starting with the 2022-23 season in the fall. Intimate. Lush. TFO musicians shine in wildly different programs](https://floridaorchestra.org/explosive-intimate-lush/): It doesn’t require a lot of evidence to prove The Florida Orchestra performs at a high level, always consistent and well-oiled, whether during a Masterworks program, a pops event or an intimate chamber concert. - [From hypnotic to rollicking fun – TFO, Milos bring it all](https://floridaorchestra.org/from-hypnotic-to-rollicking-fun/): Sitting in the audience at Mahaffey Theater over the weekend offered one of those moments when time slows and your senses percolate. - [Inside the Music: The Maestro reveals the magic of The Firebird](https://floridaorchestra.org/the-maestro-reveals-the-magic/): You’re sitting in a concert hall listening to Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird, the first of his three famous ballet scores. The world he loved was fading, and he struggled with thoughts of suicide. - [Akiko Fujimoto: It’s the music that matters, not the gender](https://floridaorchestra.org/akiko-fujimoto-its-the-music-that-matters-not-the-gender/): When Marin Alsop stepped down as music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra last summer, she left a fraternity. - [Handel’s Messiah: Why it’s still a smash hit after 300 years](https://floridaorchestra.org/handels-messiah-why-its-still-a-smash-hit-after-300-years/): Three hundred years is plenty of time for something to go out of style. - [Open rehearsal: Come inside the workings of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5](https://floridaorchestra.org/open-rehearsal-mahlers-symphony-no-5/): That night 23 years ago will always be remembered as a touching moment in The Florida Orchestra’s history. In November 1998, I sat in a crowded Morsani Hall at what is now the Straz Center, waiting in silence as Music Director Jahja Ling took the podium, looked out over the audience and spoke. - [TFO Afterthoughts: Augustin Hadelich gives intense, intimate performance](https://floridaorchestra.org/tfo-afterthoughts-augustin-hadelich-gives-intense-intimate-performance/): Playing the big symphonic works with precision is a goal of any orchestra, and TFO always makes a point of delivering its sonic punches in detail. - [At the top of his game, violinist talks Harry Potter, Prokofiev, playing by memory](https://floridaorchestra.org/at-the-top-of-his-game-violinist/): Augustin Hadelich is justly regarded as a phenom in the music world, a brilliant violinist who channels his mastery of the instrument and material through a penetrating mind. - [Opening Night Afterthoughts: New music, old favorites shed light on today’s world](https://floridaorchestra.org/opening-night-afterthoughts-new-music-old-favorites/): I first met Michael Ippolito at his parents’ home in Brandon more than 20 years ago, as he sat at the piano crafting his latest creation. - [Chief violinist tunes up for well-seasoned music](https://floridaorchestra.org/chief-violinist-tunes-up-for-well-seasoned-music/): I got on an elevator the other day and piping through a speaker was – you guessed it – Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. - [Live recordings of TFO concerts start this week on Classical WSMR radio](https://floridaorchestra.org/live-recordings-of-tfo-concerts-start-this-week-on-classical-wsmr-radio/): Here is your chance to hear some of The Florida Orchestra’s most talked about concerts this season if you missed them live at the Mahaffey Theater. - [Grant will help TFO musicians create new piece for harp, percussion](https://floridaorchestra.org/grant-will-help-tfo-musicians-create-new-piece-for-harp-percussion/): By Kelly Smith and Anna Kate Mackle, Principal Harpist - [Afterthoughts: A precious season that defied the odds](https://floridaorchestra.org/afterthoughts-a-precious-season-that-defied-the-odds/): Since The Florida Orchestra began playing music in 1968, no season has been like this one, and no experience – including various woes and hurricanes – compares to what Covid wrought over the last year. - [A year in the making: All County Music Festival in the time of Covid](https://floridaorchestra.org/a-year-in-the-making-all-county-music-festival-in-the-time-of-covid/): During a typical school year, students in Pinellas County have an opportunity to come together for the All County Music Festival to make music with their friends from Tarpon Springs to South St. Petersburg, from Pinellas Park to Seminole.
