After losing his father, a San Francisco firefighter who spent 21 years saving lives, many expected him to follow the same path. Instead, he discovered that he could honor his father’s principle of service in a different way: by designing safer vehicles that prevent tragedies before they happen. His passion for engineering began with the Alfa Romeo Spider he inherited from his father, a car he learned to understand inside and out. High school courses in physics, computer science, and electrical engineering deepened that fascination, and tutoring peers in math strengthened his desire to learn and teach. His academic choices reflect genuine curiosity and a drive to master the science behind the machines he loves. - [Krystle Wurster](https://www.firehero.org/scholarship-recipient/krystle-wurster/): Krystle states that pursuing a master’s degree in psychology is deeply personal and rooted in her own journey through grief after losing her husband, a fallen firefighter. Counseling played a crucial role in her healing and in supporting her children, inspiring her to become a grief and trauma counselor for first responder families. She hopes to combine formal clinical training with her lived experience to provide compassionate, evidence based support to those navigating profound loss. Her community involvement—including work with the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, the Gary Sinise Foundation, Tunnel to Towers, and multiple grief support groups—has strengthened her empathy, crisis response skills, and dedication to serving the fallen firefighter community. - [Michael Winter](https://www.firehero.org/scholarship-recipient/michael-winter/): Michael shares that living independently at 24 has taught him discipline, sacrifice, and the importance of taking responsibility for his future. Supporting himself while working fulltime has strengthened his determination to pursue a career in healthcare, beginning with becoming a pharmacy technician and ultimately a licensed pharmacist. He currently works as a Behavioral Health Associate supporting youth facing trauma, mental health challenges, and behavioral struggles—an environment that requires patience, compassion, and calm under pressure. Witnessing how proper medication management can transform a young person’s stability and quality of life inspired him to pursue pharmacy to serve others with precision, empathy, and clinical skills. - [Madisyn Winter](https://www.firehero.org/scholarship-recipient/madisyn-winter/): Madisyn writes that being raised by a single mother taught her responsibility, perseverance, and the importance of hard work—values that shaped her throughout high school and continue to guide her future goals. She plans to attend Itawamba Community College to become a Physical Therapist Assistant and later continue her education to become a licensed Physical Therapist. Her passion for this field comes from a desire to help people regain strength, mobility, and confidence. As a student athlete in softball, she developed discipline, resilience, and strong time management skills, while her four years in the National Beta Club strengthened her leadership, academic focus, and commitment to service. - [Isabella Suarez](https://www.firehero.org/scholarship-recipient/isabella-suarez/): Isabella “Bella” Suarez plans to pursue a degree in exercise science or athletic training with the goal of becoming an athletic trainer or physical therapist. Inspired by her love of sports and the influence of her father, Firefighter Edward Suarez, she hopes to help athletes recover from injuries and reach their full potential. - [Julianna Stanfield](https://www.firehero.org/scholarship-recipient/julianna-stanfield/): Julianna Stanfield plans to attend NC State University to major in Crop and Soil Science. Her long-term goal is to research soil microbiology and improve understanding of how soil health impacts agriculture and the environment. She also hopes to encourage more young women to enter the traditionally male-dominated field of soil science. - [Natalie Sealey](https://www.firehero.org/scholarship-recipient/natalie-sealey/): Natalie Sealey plans to attend Southeast Technical College to earn a degree in business. Her goal is to build a stable career in business administration, with an interest in accounting, marketing, management, and eventually becoming a loan officer. She is motivated to create a secure future for herself and her family following the loss of her stepfather, Captain Nicholas Van Dam. - [Jalyn Rasmussen](https://www.firehero.org/scholarship-recipient/jalyn-rasmussen/): Jalyn shares that pursuing her education is deeply tied to honoring her father, a battalion chief who died in the line of duty when she was three years old. Raised by a single mother who modeled strength, discipline, and perseverance, she learned early to approach every opportunity with responsibility and determination. She has excelled academically through the Running Start program at Wenatchee Valley College, where she maintains a 3.9 GPA and will graduate in 2026 with both her high school diploma and Associate of Arts degree. Balancing college coursework with year‑round athletic training has strengthened her resilience, adaptability, and work ethic—qualities she carries into every commitment. - [Rhenda Perry](https://www.firehero.org/scholarship-recipient/rhenda-perry/): Rhenda writes that service, sacrifice, and community have always guided her life, but these values deepened after losing her husband, a fallen firefighter. His courage and dedication continue to inspire her as she pursues a degree in Criminal Justice and prepares for a career as a Probation and Parole Officer. Inspired by her father, Captain Michael Lyons, she hopes to continue growing as both an artist and mentor. - [Chase Lee](https://www.firehero.org/scholarship-recipient/chase-lee/): Chase shares that losing his father at just eight years old became the defining moment of his childhood—one that forced him to grow up quickly and begin shaping his identity without the guidance he once relied on. His father’s words, “As a young Black man, you need to make yourself stand out,” became a driving force behind his determination to excel academically, personally, and socially. Through hard work, he earned first honors on every report card, was inducted into the National Honor Society, and competed at state and national levels in track.
