New clinical recommendations from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the Eurpean Federation of Periodontology (EFP) urge pregnant women to maintain periodontal health as well. Research has indicated that women with periodontal disease may be at risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, such giving birth to a pre-term or low-birth weight baby, reports the AAP and EFP. Periodontal disease is a chronic, bacteria-induced, inflammatory condition that attacks the gum tissue and in more severe cases, the bone supporting the teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, can lead to tooth loss and has been associated with other systemic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The medical and dental communities concur that maintaining periodontal health is an important part of a healthy pregnancy. "Tenderness, redness, or swollen gums are a few indications of periodontonal disease," warns Dr. Nancy L. Newhouse, DDS, MS, President of the AAP and a practicing periodontist in Independence, Missouri. "Other symptoms include gums that bleed with toothbrushing or eating, gums that are pulling away from the teeth, bad breath, and loose teeth. These signs, especially during pregnancy, should not be ignored and may require treatment from a dental professional." Several research studies have suggested that women with periodontal disease may be more likely to deliver babies prematurely or with low-birth weight than mothers with healthy gums. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), babies with a birth weight of less than 5.5 pounds may be at risk of long-term health problems such as delayed motor skills, social growth, or learning disabilities. Similar complications are true for babies born at least three weeks earlier than its due date. Other issues associated with pre-term birth include respiratory problems, vision and hearing loss, or feeding and digestive problems. Routine brushing and flossing, and seeing a periodontist, dentist, or dental hygienist for a comprehensive periodontal evaluation during pregnancy may decrease the chance of adverse pregnancy complications," –Dr. Newhouse The medical and dental communities concur that maintaining periodontal health is an important part of a healthy pregnancy. The clinical recommendations released by the AAP and the EFP state that non-surgical periodontal therapy is safe for pregnant women, and can result in improved periodontal health. Published concurrently in the Journal of Periodontology and Journal of Clinical Periodontology, the report provides guidelines for both dental and medical professionals to use in diagnosing and treating periodontal disease in pregnant women. In addition, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recently released a statement encouraging pregnant women to sustain their oral health and recommended regular dental cleanings during pregnancy. "Routine brushing and flossing, and seeing a periodontist, dentist, or dental hygienist for a comprehensive periodontal evaluation during pregnancy may decrease the chance of adverse pregnancy complications," says Dr. Newhouse. "It is important for expectant mothers to monitor their periodontal health and to have a conversation with their periodontist or dentist about the most appropriate care. By maintaining your periodontal health, you are not only supporting your overall health, but also helping to ensure a safe pregnancy and a healthy baby," says Dr. Newhouse. When it comes to our little ones, this fear is much more exaggerated. As a result, your child may not be able to relax or sit still long enough to receive proper dental treatment. At Dr. Michael’s Dental Clinic, we understand that dental anxiety can be a stumbling block to ensuring your child’s oral health. That is why we make use of the best, most up-to-the-minute dental technologies available to put your child’s safety and comfort above all. With the dawn of Lasers in Dentistry, the feeling of anxiety can now be well replaced with those of fun and excitement. No shots. No drills. No fear. Dr. Michael’s offers Waterlase, the most advanced technology in laser dentistry. It not only replaces the much-feared drill; it also eliminates the use of needles. In the practice of our pediatric dentist Dr. Imneet Madan, our younger patients feel exceptionally comfortable. A lot of them describe their experience as nothing more than an occasional faint sensation of popping on the tooth. The laser can be related to the feeling of popcorn bursting. Some kids would say they imagine Star Wars-shooting at the bacteria. “The laser can be related to the feeling of popcorn bursting. Some kids would say they imagine Star Wars-shooting at the bacteria,” says Dr. Imneet. This technology uses a unique, powerful interaction of air, water and laser energy that reduces the need for anesthesia (shots) when performing routine dental procedures. Unlike the much-dreaded dental drill, this laser does not require direct contact with the tooth surface. It works at pinpoint precision without heat, vibration or pressure. No Pain. No Trauma. The same technology is applicable to soft tissue procedures where the laser promises precise cutting, faster healing and no bleeding. When it comes to saving severely decayed baby teeth, the use of the diode laser has been pioneered by Dr. Imneet. So far, the success rate of her laser-assisted root canal treatments comes close to 100 percent. She firmly believes in performing this procedure even on baby teeth that would otherwise be indicated for early extractions. Early loss of baby teeth could later on subject a child to more complex orthodontic procedures. We recommend a dental check-up every six months for optimum oral health. With the best technology and providers in hand, we invite you and your child to come and visit Dr. Michael’s Children’s Dental Center, Dubai. Have you ever bothered to check what comes with the water you drink? There’s an escalating controversy about fluoride and general health. On one hand, pro-platforms stand on fluoride being an essential mineral for oral health. On the other, cons expound on fluoride-associated dangers like bone fractures, osteosarcoma and low IQ. Benefits of Fluoride Fluoride strengthens the tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to tooth decay. It reduces the amount of acid the bacteria on your teeth produce.Studies say children with fluoride on their developing teeth developing tend to have shallower grooves in their teeth, making their teeth easier to clean. It helps repair the early stages of tooth decay even before the decay can be seen. The addition of fluoride to water has been researched for over 50 years, and water fluoridation has been proven to reduce decay by 40-60%.The American Dental Association (ADA) continues to endorse fluoridation of community water supplies as safe and effective for preventing cavities. The ADA recognizes that fluoride deficiency places individuals of any age at risk for tooth decay. What happens when one gets too much fluoride? Have you ever wondered what happens when your child swallows toothpaste while brushing? Dental fluorosis is a change in the appearance of the tooth’s enamel, commonly causing white spots that stain the teeth. Fluorosis is triggered by too much exposure to fluoride when the teeth are developing. This can happen when fluoride supplements are taken by children age 8 or younger who live in areas where the water supply is fluoridated. It can also happen when children swallow toothpaste. Remember to teach your child to spit out toothpaste after brushing. Dental Fluorosis Classification by H.T. Dean–1942212 Classification Criteria Description of Enamel Normal Smooth, glossy, pale creamy-white translucent surface Questionable A few white flecks or white spots Very Mild Small opaque, paper-white areas covering less than 25% of the tooth surface Mild Opaque white areas covering less than 50% of the tooth surface Moderate All tooth surface affected; marked wear or biting surfaces; brown stain may be present Severe All tooth surfaces affected; discrete or confluent pitting; brown stain present How much fluoride should parents use to clean their child’s teeth? As recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, parents should use no more than a smear or rice-size amount of fluoridated toothpaste for children less than three years of age and no more than a pea-size amount of fluoridated toothpaste is appropriate for children aged three to six. Is your drinking water fortified with fluoride? Comparison of a smear (left) with a pea-sized (right) amount of toothpaste. People who find time getting fit with sports, workouts or even just running around town do a better job controlling their weight and improving their mood, sleep and energy. For those who eat and breathe sports for a living there could be a downside. A study made by a team of German dental researchers links an increase in cavities and tooth erosion among athletes who trained for long periods of time, multiple days a week. The aim of the research published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports is to give light to the impact of endurance training on oral health, with regard to tooth erosion, caries, and salivary parameters. Your body also needs water to produce saliva which in turn fight germs in your mouth and prevent bad breath. Drink lots of water before, during and after workouts. The study of 35 triathletes and 35 non-exercisers included oral exams and assessments, saliva testing, a questionnaire about eating, drinking and oral hygiene habits, plus training habits, beverage consumption and sports nutrition.Researchers discovered two important things: As the participants’ total weekly training time increased, so did the prevalence of dental erosions; and, according to a subsample of athletes participating in an incremental running field test, saliva flow rates decreased when intensity increased and saliva pH slightly increased. Cornelia Frese, a marathoner and researcher in the Department of Conservative Dentistry at the University Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, tells the Runner’s World Newswire, “The triathletes’ high carbohydrate consumption, including sports drinks, gels, and bars during training, can lower the mouth’s pH below the critical mark of 5.5. That can lead to dental erosion and caries. Also, the athletes breathe through the mouth during hard exercise. The mouth gets dry, and produces less saliva, which normally protects the teeth.”This doesn’t mean you should stop training and engaging in sports to keep your chompers healthy. Here are a few practical things to eliminate a workout’s effect on your teeth. Drink plenty of water. Not only is it important to stay hydrated especially when training; your body also needs water to produce saliva which in turn fight germs in your mouth and prevent bad breath. Drink lots of water before, during and after workouts.Rinse your mouth as often as you can. Sports drinks, gels and bars are a common part of training and exercise. Remember to rinse your mouth thoroughly with plain water afterwards to reduce the amount of acid or sugar lingering in your mouth.Chew sugar-free gum. This helps increase salivary output and prevent dry mouth.Mind your diet. When not in training, stay away from sugary foods and drinks. Experts say that maintaining a limit of around five teaspoons of sugar a day – less than 5% of the daily total calorie intake – will allow you to keep your teeth for life.Brush and floss regularly. Keep your oral hygiene in check. No matter how exhausted you are, never let a day go by without cleaning your teeth. Using an alcohol-free mouthwash can also help prevent tooth decay and bad breath.Visit your dentist regularly. Let your dentist examine your teeth and gums regularly and have him or her address any form of dental problem that may arise right away. Driving a car, turning the heater on or simply printing papers. Everything we do has an impact on nature. Man’s overconsumption of food, material goods and non-renewable resources has taken a great toll on the very place that sustains us all. What happens to us when we run out of fossil fuels to use or when we’ve burned down the last of our vast forests? Did you know that it takes 200 liters of water to produce one latte?{youtube}nDTmjR_GG1w{/youtube} The earth, and everything in it, enjoys a very blessed place in the universe. We get all the energy we need because it’s not too far from the sun and it’s not too close that we’d be seared to ashes. To make sure that these ‘settings’ are kept right, layers of greenhouse gases wrap the earth like a protective blanket. These gases keep us warm and shield the planet from the freezing universe. Carbon dioxide or CO2, is not the most potent greenhouse gas, but because it’s widely the most available (or produced as by-products), it’s considered the biggest contributor to global warming or the greenhouse effect. The more CO2 produced, the thicker the greenhouse layers, the warmer the Earth. It’s already happening, and it’s much worse for those living in poor and underdeveloped parts of the world. Global warming has tremendous and devastating effects such as droughts, floods, storms, heat waves and accelerating sea levels. What can we do to help? KNOW YOUR ENERGY. Use it wisely. Do not put appliances on standby mode, turn them off. Unplug mobile chargers when you don’t use them. Turn computers off – at work and at home. Turn the lights off when you don’t need them on. Save some energy by setting your air conditioner a little higher in summer. Save water. Recycle paper. A lot of people would think that brushing one’s teeth falls under the category ‘basics’, yet a new report says otherwise. In a recent study by the British Dental Health Foundation, seven million Britons admitted to not cleaning their teeth regularly, while one in every seven confessed that they would not pick up their toothbrushes for two whole days.Anyone who regularly skips brushing their teeth morning or night is storing up oral health problems for the future such as tooth decay and gum disease – the biggest cause of tooth loss. BDHF Chief Executive Dr Nigel Carter OBE said: “Anyone who regularly skips brushing their teeth morning or night is storing up oral health problems for the future such as tooth decay and gum disease – the biggest cause of tooth loss.”Dr. Carter said that the last bushing of the day also coats the teeth with fluoride – the only time that fluoride is not washed away through eating or drinking. Brushing at night before we sleep protects our tooth’s surface further during sleep. Gum disease may progress without pain, producing few obvious signs, even in its late stages. To keep our teeth healthy, it’s important to keep our oral hygiene in check. Remember to brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes using fluoride toothpaste. Regular flossing also keeps out food debris stuck in between teeth that could later on cause tooth decay. BDHA also recommends reducing consumption of sugary foods and drinks and scheduling regular dental appointments to keep our teeth and gums healthy. The mouth is like a barometer to our health. If your lips are dry or flaky this usually means you are dehydrated. The easy solution – drink more water. If you suffer from Apthos ulcers regularly this may mean you are low in some vital vitamins or minerals or just run down. These are all early signs you can read from your mouth and act on them to improve your health. Another very important warning sign is bleeding gums. This is perhaps the most common sign that many people choose to ignore. If your arm bled every time you washed it, I am pretty sure you would do something about it. Look at it this way: Healthy gums don’t bleed! You can help your mouth and your general health by allowing a dental hygienist to flush through the difficult to reach areas in your mouth we can help keep you motivated with your flossing and give you helpful tips on your oral hygiene routine because we all need a little motivation every now and then to keep us on the right track. We normally advise, to keep your mouth healthy for life, to visit a dental hygienist minimum of every six months. The main reason why our gums bleed is because of a build-up of plaque bacteria (the soft yellow stuff on our teeth) or a build-up of calculus (the hard yellow or brown stuff on our teeth). We can also help prevent gums from receding, teeth becoming loose, bad breath, brown or yellow stained teeth and general discomfort in the mouth. The main reason why our gums bleed is because of a build-up of plaque bacteria (the soft yellow stuff on our teeth) or a build-up of calculus (the hard yellow or brown stuff on our teeth). Both of these contain hundreds and hundreds of harmful bacteria which can’t wait to attack your gums and get into your blood stream thus affecting other areas of the body, your heart, or an unborn baby. There’s a lot of media hype surrounding teeth whitening or teeth bleaching which does have its place but sometimes a good dental hygiene visit and polish up is all you might need to be really happy with your teeth. So they become cleaner, healthier and whiter. Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the cause of 40% to 80% of oropharyngeal cancers. A new study reports that people with signs of poor oral health like gum disease and missing teeth are more likely to be infected with oral HPV.“Because HPV needs wounds in the mouth to enter and infect the oral cavity, poor oral health, which may include ulcers, mucosal disruption or chronic inflammation, may create an entry portal for HPV,” said Thanh Cong Bui, Dr.P.H., postdoctoral research fellow in the School of Public Health at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston. "The good news is, this risk factor is modifiable — by maintaining good oral hygiene and good oral health, one can prevent HPV infection and subsequent HPV-related cancers." According to the American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates for oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers in the United States for 2013: About 36,000 people will get oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. An estimated 6,850 people will die of these cancers. Periodontal (gum) disease is often silent, without symptoms until an advanced stage of the disease. That’s why, at Dr. Michael’s Dental Clinic, we recommend that you observe effective oral hygiene and visit your dentist every six months for cleanings and check-ups. Cranberry juice cocktail is approximately 26% to 33% pure cranberry juice, sweetened with fructose or artificial sweetener. According to the Harvard School of Public Health a 12-ounce serving of cranberry juice cocktail contains 12 teaspoons of sugar and 200 calories. The debate whether or not drinking cranberry juice does more damage than good is so popular it earned its own caucus in the United States. The Cranberry Caucus kicked off at the time when sugary drinks are put under scrutiny, with health advocates pointing their fingers at large sodas and other drinks for the alarming rate of obesity in the US.Cranberries can be enjoyed, they should be limited to mealtimes only to avoid potential problems. –Dr. Nigel Carter Cranberry Juice and Oral Health Cranberry juice is already known to help prevent UTI (urinary tract infection) by preventing bacteria from clinging to the bladder wall. In 2005, a team led by Hyun Koo, D.D.S., Ph.D., at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that this same trait also holds the same promise for protecting our teeth against tooth decay.Dr. Koo’s team also found evidence that cranberry juice disrupts the formation of the building block of plaque saying, “Something in the cranberry juice disarms the pathogens that cause tooth decay.” But don’t even think about running to the juice aisle in the grocery store to prevent tooth decay, Dr. Koo said. Instead, her team hopes to isolate the useful compounds within the juice and add them into toothpastes and mouthwashes. Cranberry Juice: To drink or not to drink Dr. Nigel Carter chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said: "Cranberries are naturally very acidic, while manufacturers also tend to add sugar to cranberry products.” "Every time you eat or drink something acidic the enamel on your teeth is softened temporarily. "Tooth decay is caused by sugar, and erosion can leave you even more open to this. "So while cranberries can be enjoyed, they should be limited to mealtimes only to avoid potential problems." According to the peer-reviewed journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), some citric acids found in fruit drinks are more erosive than hydrochloric or sulfuric acid—which is also known as battery acid. These refined sugars and acids contained in soft drinks and citrus juices promote wearing away of the teeth’s enamel. Did you know that the average 12 ounce cola contains 10 teaspoons of sugar? Interesting enough, the average 12 ounce of cranberry juice cocktail contains 12 teaspoons of sugar! Learn how much sugar is in soda and other beverages here. Some citric acids found in fruit drinks are more erosive than hydrochloric or sulfuric acid—which is also known as battery acid. When deciding between the many selections available, the AGD suggests choosing brewed tea. Apart from its refreshing good taste, brewed teas are rich in antioxidants which are thought to decrease incidence of heart disease, diabetes and cancers.Kenton Ross, DMD, FAGD, AGD spokesperson says "I would highly recommend patients choose tea as an alternative to more erosive drinks like soda and fruit juice." Experts advise that if you do drink tea, avoid additives such as milk, sugar or lemon because these combine with tea's natural flavonoids and reduce tea’s health benefits. Here are AGD’s tips to decrease tooth erosion: Reduce or eliminate carbonated beverages. Instead, drink water, milk, or tea.Skip the additives such as sugar, lemon, and milk.Drink acidic drinks quickly and through a straw.Chew sugar-free gum to increase saliva flow in your mouth.Rinse with water to neutralize the acids, and wait an hour before brushing. And with 14 million people saying they have bad teeth – that's almost a third (29%) of the adult population that are risking decay to their mental wellbeing, as well as their teeth. Oasis Dental Care carried out the research which cites a reluctance to smile as the most common way that poor dental hygiene impacts lives. 5.4 million (39%*) of those with bad teeth say they try to hide their smile or even avoid smiling altogether. And self-esteem can be eroded too because 4.4 million (31%*) people say that having bad teeth has made them less confident in public. A poorly maintained mouth is making 2.1 million (15%*) feel depressed and is even stopping 400,000 (3%*) leaving the house. 10%* (1.4 million) don't speak as much as they would if they had better teeth and one million (7%*) say their love life has been negatively affected. The study reveals that women are more sensitive to the mental impacts of having bad teeth as almost four-in-five (78%*) women who have bad teeth are affected versus just 63%* of men. That's despite more men than women admitting to having poor oral hygiene (33% of men versus 26% of women). Dentists are clear that maintaining good dental hygiene will help you avoid pain, discomfort and oral diseases which can lead to the loss of teeth; but now we know that it'll also help with your social wellbeing. Julian Perry, clinical director at Oasis Dental Care, said: 'Dentists are clear that maintaining good dental hygiene will help you avoid pain, discomfort and oral diseases which can lead to the loss of teeth; but now we know that it'll also help with your social wellbeing. 'The negative mental impacts of having bad teeth identified in our study go beyond vanity – some members of the public are demonstrating some very serious psychological issues, and we'd urge them to see a dentist. 'The good news for those affected is that there's a solution to almost every dental problem, whether it's to treat pain or whether it's a cosmetic improvement. It's frustrating that most of the complaints we deal with are as a result of neglect and are completely avoidable – so putting more effort into oral hygiene is normally the best solution.' Those in the North East are more likely to suffer the negative mental effects of having bad teeth as 83%* say it's had an impact; whilst those in the East of England are the least affected as just 52%* say it's had an influence on their lives. Although people from Wales claim to have the best teeth, four-in-five (80%*) of those who have poor teeth say that their life has been affected by them. And although those in London and Scotland admit to having the worst teeth, it's less likely to have an impact on their life – 72%* of Londoners and 70%* of Scots say that having bad teeth has affected their lives. Here’s why.](https://www.drmichaels.com/blog/bad-breath-under-your-face-mask-here-s-why): Don’t blame it on the mask. The stench of your ‘mask breath’ actually reveals an existing oral health problem. Bothered by the unpleasant smell of your breath under your mask? If you can smell it in there, the mask isn’t the culprit. It is most likely an existing oral health problem you’ve just become aware of. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, over 80 million people in the world suffer from bad breath or halitosis and most of them don’t know that they have it. Now that we have to constantly wear a mask for protection, it is impossible not to notice the smell of our own breath. Why does my breath stink? "Bad breath normally is caused by different factors. You have external factors like tea, coffee, garlic (food with strong odors) and smoking. And then you have internal factors like poor oral hygiene and plaque”, said Katie Taylor, dental hygienist at Dr. Michael’s Dental Clinic. She further emphasized that dehydration or excessive loss of water in the body can also cause your breath to stink. Problems in the sinuses or the tonsils can be contributing factors, too. In certain cases, however, bad breath could be more than just an oral cavity problem. Hygienist Katie explains: "Your mouth is a like a barometer, like a gauge to the rest of your body. There are so many things connected to the mouth, (and bad breath can be a symptom of) other diseases like heart disease and diabetes." Eliminating factors Since the cause could be anything from eating pungent food to serious diseases, the best way to determine the reason behind your bad breath is through elimination of factors. “You want to eliminate your oral hygiene issues first. Because if your oral hygiene is good but you're still having problems (make sure you have a dental check-up first), that’s when you can check further with the doctor”, said Hygienist Katie. Prioritize oral health Dental professionals constantly encourage everyone to make oral health a priority. Cavities and bacteria in your mouth produce bad breath and could worsen if not given immediate and proper attention. Here’s Hygienist Katie’s advice: “Floss and brush twice daily using fluoride toothpaste. Make sure that you also do tongue brushing as your tongue also has the same plaque as your teeth have.” She further recommended to stay hydrated especially during summer, drinking more water instead of diuretic beverages such as coffee or tea. Lastly, it is imperative to go for regular check-ups with your dentist and hygienist to stay dentally fit and keep that fresh breath, with or without a mask. Though that takes only 240 seconds daily, a lot of people still spend anywhere from 30 seconds to less than a minute brushing their pearly whites. The solution? A 3D-printed toothbrush that promises to give you “perfectly clean teeth” in just six seconds, pretty much like any Vine video. Called the Blizzident, this custom-made 3D-printed toothbrush is lined with around 400 soft, ultrafine bristles attached to an inverse 3D mold of your mouth. To clean your teeth, just insert the Blizzident in your mouth and then bite and grind 15 times. This roughly takes six seconds and you get all your teeth cleaned at once. It even includes a tongue cleaner! Blizzident spokesperson Chris Martin told Mashable, "It was the intention of the designers to make toothbrushing as easy as biting into an apple.” They say the goal is not just to make brushing quick, but to ensure the technique is just as exact as a dentist's. “Because you are brushing all your teeth at the same time, you are brushing extremely quickly. You brush all the difficult-to-reach and interdental regions without even having to think about it.” At the moment, Blizzident costs $300.
