- [Busy as… erm… bees.](https://dowgardens.org/busy-as-erm-bees/): Today started as a cool morning but looking ahead to tomorrow, 85 degrees and rain the rest of the week, I took advantage of the opportunity and got into the hives. Yes, there has been a lot to do lately! Today I completed the course of antibiotics for all hives that were eligible (meaning those
- [Naming Queen bees after someone you love is a risky game!](https://dowgardens.org/naming-queen-bees-after-someone-you-love-is-a-risky-game/): We have been in the habit of affectionately naming hives after ourselves or people we care about. And although we were sad when we realized that queen Tyler died, we had a pretty good laugh about his inability to stand up to disease while queen Debbie thrived and produced honey for days! Queen Debbie was
- [Lonely Superorganism ISO Single (unmated) Lady](https://dowgardens.org/lonely-superorganism-iso-single-unmated-lady/): Now that’s a title for the press! We’ve had a whirlwind spring and neither of us have found the time for writing a blog entry, but we sure have invested time in beekeeping! Both the gardens’ hives and our personal apiaries are buzzing! Summarizing what has happened the past few weeks into interesting tidbits, is
- [A Short Inspection and a Short Article](https://dowgardens.org/a-short-inspection-and-a-short-article/): Spring of 2024 is one for the records books. I am pretty sure all Michiganders notice the early spring and the exceptionally well-timed show mother nature is putting on with the crab apple blossoms right now! Beekeepers know springs like these turn into adventures at every inspection. Strong hives coming out of mild winters are
- [Don’t count your Yellow and Black Chickens before they emerge!](https://dowgardens.org/dont-count-your-yellow-and-black-chickens-before-they-emerge/): When last we left our valiant beekeepers, the season was ending with hope on the horizon. Mites were monitored closely through the year, European Foulbrood had been treated, two of the three hives had plentiful stores and some fall feeding had occurred. We know one hive did not survive. After weeks of hefting to check
- [Hive Inspections and Honey Harvest Plans](https://dowgardens.org/hive-inspections-and-honey-harvest-plans/): When thinking of Michigan and weather, the words unpredictable and widely variable come to mind. For 2023, we started with a mild winter, a wet spring, and a dry summer. WNEM (local TV station) noted that we had the fifth longest drought on record, mid-May through mid-June. Someone’s rain dance worked and mother nature has
- [Installing Nucs](https://dowgardens.org/installing-nucs-2/): Last Thursday started as an early morning, I left the gardens at 5:00 and drove to the beeyard to pick up our 2017 nucs. Yes, this is a little late to be getting bees for installation, so many great flowering nectar plants are done. But we like our supplier, are always happy with the quality, and can acknowledge that this is a slow year and a slow start to bees too is the downside.
- [A Bee-utiful Season](https://dowgardens.org/a-bee-utiful-season-2/): It’s starting to look like a bee-utiful season! Unfortunately, the outlook doesn't seem so good for the Whiting Forest bees as neither of our sister hives showed any activity in early spring. One was still alive, but with a cluster less than the size of a softball I wasn’t very optimistic. I wasn’t very diligent this winter with feeding the bees with the added complication of Whiting Forest being a construction zone, the bees were left to live on their honey stores alone.
- [A New Queen](https://dowgardens.org/a-new-queen-2/): The overwintered hive didn’t start out strong, but boy that queen is an egg-laying miracle! I still have them in one-story, but they’re almost ready to expanded spaces.
- [Expansion](https://dowgardens.org/expansion-2/): Expansion
- [Playing Catch Up](https://dowgardens.org/playing-catch-up-2/): Playing Catch Up
- [Supers are filled with fresh-capped honey!](https://dowgardens.org/supers-are-filled-with-fresh-capped-honey/): Supers are filled with fresh-capped honey!
- [Playing Catch Up](https://dowgardens.org/playing-catch-up/): This morning we fed all hives their third and final round of medicine for American Foul Brood. The bees are doing great! In fact, the two hives with working queens were ready for a second story today. The third hive, the one we requeened last week, is catching up. The queen is definitely out of
- [Summer Bee Progress Update](https://dowgardens.org/summer-bee-progress-update/): Summer Bee Progress Update
- [Spring Mite Control Worked](https://dowgardens.org/spring-mite-control-worked/): Spring Mite Control Worked
- [The drones are a hit!](https://dowgardens.org/the-drones-are-a-hit/): The drones are a hit!
- [Wrapping up the Season](https://dowgardens.org/wrapping-up-the-season/): The season is wrapping up! I believe we have quite a bit of late season nectar being collected, and today expect a good harvest of honey!
- [A New Home for 10,000](https://dowgardens.org/a-new-home-for-10000/): A New Home for 10,000
- [Building her Kingdom](https://dowgardens.org/building-her-kingdom/): Building her Kingdom
- [A Healthy, Growing Hive …](https://dowgardens.org/a-healthy-growing-hive/): Our inspection of the hive today was to see if the bees were making progress on building up their population. The starting population was about 10-12,000 bees (or 3 lbs); by mid-summer her majesty, the queen, and her loyal subjects should have increased the hive population to more than double that number.
- [The  Bees are Back at Whiting Forest of Dow Gardens!](https://dowgardens.org/the-bees-are-back-at-whiting-forest-of-dow-gardens/): The Bees are Back at Whiting Forest of Dow Gardens!
- [The Neighborhood is aBuzzzzz](https://dowgardens.org/the-neighborhood-is-abuzzzzz/): It was a HUGE day for the Whiting Forest hive! As you know from last week’s post, an expansion was in order. When we opened the outer cover of the hive, the bees were overflowing onto the inner cover. The photo shows Elly holding the inner cover with bees on top of it and the overflowing hive below. It was clearly time to put on an addition to their home. We added a second deep box of foundation frames. Together these two levels are known as the brood box.
- [A Hive of a Different Kind](https://dowgardens.org/a-hive-of-a-different-kind/): A Hive of a Different Kind
- [Enter the Queen](https://dowgardens.org/enter-the-queen/): Remember, the last time we were in the Whiting Forest hives, we had Hive #1 – the hive populated using a package of bees at the end of April with an expansion level at this point; Hive #2 – the Nuc hive that was without a queen and the workers were trying to raise a new one; and Hive #3 – the Nuc hive populated with a strong laying queen.
- [Putting the Pollen in Pollinator](https://dowgardens.org/putting-the-pollen-in-pollinator/): Last week was proclaimed as Pollinator Week in the State of Michigan. As stated in the governor’s proclamation: "Pollination plays a vital role in our national forests and grasslands, which provide forage, fish, wildlife, timber, water, mineral resources, and recreational opportunities as well as enhanced economic development opportunities for communities …" We at Dow Gardens know the value of pollination.
- [The Heat is ON](https://dowgardens.org/the-heat-is-on/): After a small break for vacation, we checked in on the hives to see how they were doing. If you remember we have three hives. Hive one is the most advanced (from a population and honey production standpoint) because it was started in late April, hive three arrived with a stable queen situation and was off and running, and Hive two was the hive we had to re-queen. While it fell a little behind, it is doing well now.
- [Combating the Mighty Mites](https://dowgardens.org/combating-the-mighty-mites/): Varroa destructor is a mite that feeds on honeybees and is arguably the single largest driver of the global honey bee health decline. As its species name implies, the varroa mites can DESTROY a hive population if not controlled and monitored.
- [Oh, Honey, Honey](https://dowgardens.org/oh-honey-honey/): These past two weeks, we headed into the hive with the primary goal of checking their available space. We have been seeing an exciting level of honey flow and have added supers again and again. We want to avoid having a HONEYBOUND hive. What is honeybound? Well, as I have learned through this process, a healthy hive must have ample space maintained for the queen to keep producing new bees (brood) in the lower two boxes of the hive. This is the reason we check and treat for mites and inspect for diversity in the age of the brood (eggs and larvae) - all to keep the colony healthy and confident in their queen.
- [Liquid Gold](https://dowgardens.org/liquid-gold/): WOW! This week I had my mind blown by the process of removing honey from the hives. I will say I had never seen this process in action and had NO IDEA what I was in for. As mentioned in the last edition, the hives were bursting with honey and frankly, we were out of new supers to put on the hives.
- [Love Hurts](https://dowgardens.org/love-hurts/): So this is a tough edition to write, as I am still sore, literally and figuratively from being stung at the hive this week. Elly and I decided this might be a good opportunity to discuss times and situations when you should NOT go into your hives
- [Get out!](https://dowgardens.org/get-out/): I am a little behind as fall has been really busy at the Gardens, but I have one crazy thing to share! We went into the hives on September 18th. It wasn’t really feeling much like fall yet, but the bees knew!
- [Color Contrast: Light and Black as Night?](https://dowgardens.org/color-contrast-light-and-black-as-night/): So this has been a year of surprises, but I thought I was beyond the big ones now. As you will remember we harvested the majority of the honey from the hives at Whiting Forest the first week in September. We decided that there was still a lot of nice weather and blooming flowers so we put one honey super on each hive to see what would happen.
- [Honey Crystallization: Why Does it Happen and How to Use It Anyway?](https://dowgardens.org/honey-crystallization-why-does-it-happen-and-how-to-use-it-anyway/): If you have raw honey, from this season (or from previous seasons), it is possible/likely that at this point in the year, it is starting to crystallize. While I know how to temporarily ‘fix’ the problem, I wanted to know more about WHY it happened (scientist in me). I am lucky to have a good source of information – the beekeepers in the area, so I spoke with people who know and also referenced Google. I found a great bunch of articles online; one in particular that I felt gave a concise summary of why and how crystallization happens. From that, I gleaned the most important points for people to understand; I thought this was good information to share.
- [What Do Beekeepers Do in Winter?](https://dowgardens.org/what-do-beekeepers-do-in-winter/): After we hosted a seminar called “Is Beekeeping for Me?," I have decided that yes indeed it is. There is a lot of work to do BEFORE spring comes to get ready to launch my own hive(s). That lead me to ask the question, ‘what do beekeepers do during the winter?’ There are three main
- [Strengthening your Hive](https://dowgardens.org/strengthening-your-hive/): As we all work to just survive these trying times, we will all have days that are highs and lows. But we are like the honeybees, if we all work together (in our case staying apart), we can have a stronger ‘hive’ for it. There are a lot of things that can negatively impact a
- [A Garden for Pollinators](https://dowgardens.org/a-garden-for-pollinators/): About 80-90% of the species in the plant Kingdom are flowering plants. This means that in order to reproduce effectively (exchange genetic information to keep populations strong), they must be pollinated and produce fruit and seeds. Most of these plants (~80%) require animals for pollination. Flower type, shape, color, odor, nectar, and structure all help
- [Preventing the Swarm](https://dowgardens.org/preventing-the-swarm/): The main challenge of every beekeeper is to keep their bees healthy and therefore have a better chance at colony survival (especially through the winter). A colony of bees is a super organism—an animal—and like all domesticated animals, honeybees rely on humans for well being and health. Everything we do, with the exception of harvesting
- [Lessons Learned](https://dowgardens.org/lessons-learned/): The spring started out strong in the Whiting Forest hives. Lots of healthy bees. The novice in me thought that was incredible and we should have an easy season! Well it is incredible these days to have that kind of survival rate, but what I didn’t know were the ramifications of a strong hive coupled
- [The Hive Mind](https://dowgardens.org/the-hive-mind/): Michigan State University recommends before you begin beekeeping, you should at minimum read a book, attend a seminar, be hands-on in a hive, and find a mentor. One of the best things a beginning beekeeper can do is to get a mentor. Work with someone with more experience and knowledge, asking questions, get experience dealing
- [Four Hives at the Orchard](https://dowgardens.org/four-hives-at-the-orchard/): Well, folks, it’s been an exciting year so far. The Dow Gardens orchards started with 2 hives this spring with very mixed progress including one dying out from disease (read previous entries to understand that saga). Only the queen from that hive remains as she was added to a split we made. However, a peek
- [Another year, another heartache.](https://dowgardens.org/6916-2/): Unfortunately, one thing a beekeeper learns to weather is a season of heartache. I know personally I (Elly) get so invested in my bees and have become over confident in my ability to overwinter bees that when I have a season that’s less than great, I feel it! It’s not just the blow to my
- [ISO: Better Bees and Better Ways](https://dowgardens.org/iso-better-bees-and-better-ways/): In an effort to improve bee genetics in our apiary and our technique, we spent last Friday playing hooky from work and experiencing another beekeeper’s apiary. We hit the road on a busy spring Friday and headed downstate. We visited Mike Sautter, located in Romulus. We pulled into the farm and were greeted by the
- [The Importance of Closed Apiaries: Mitigating Disease Risks in Beekeeping](https://dowgardens.org/the-importance-of-closed-apiaries-mitigating-disease-risks-in-beekeeping/): This is an important entry to read in an appropriate order! Please understand why we are making such drastic decisions in the Whiting beeyard. Our previous entry will walk you, reader, through noticing symptoms in our hives that were concerning during an inspection. We went through extensive diagnostic work, research on bee disease, and lots
- [Sometimes things go right and sometimes they go awry](https://dowgardens.org/sometimes-things-go-right-and-sometimes-they-go-awry/): On Wednesday, July 29th we pulled the honey off the Dow Gardens bee hives. We used fume boards to drive the bees down out of the honey supers. This was a much calmer approach than our method of blowing them out of the supers with a leaf blower – last year’s technique. We took our
- [Predators and Pests](https://dowgardens.org/predators-and-pests/): While I wouldn’t say I am perfectly comfortable tending a hive, I am getting more comfortable and confident that I can identify an issue if I come across one. Varroa mites are only one of those issues. We know that mites significantly reduce the health of a population and more so at this time of
- [Fall Season "2020 Style"](https://dowgardens.org/fall-season-2020-style/): Last fall, preparing a hive for winter was new to me, but consisted of making sure the hive had been treated late fall for mites, stores of honey and pollen were plentiful, putting a mouse guard (made of ¼ inch hardware cloth) to prevent nesting invaders, and capping up the hive for the winter. Seemed
- [It's Getting Hot in Here](https://dowgardens.org/its-getting-hot-in-here/): For the beekeeper, winter is filled with anxiety. Did I do everything I could to help them be ready for winter? Were the mites and other pests under control? Did we secure the hive well enough to protect from predators and cold? Do the bees have enough resources to make it through until the spring
- [SOMETIMES LOVE JUST AIN'T ENOUGH](https://dowgardens.org/sometimes-love-just-aint-enough/): It is with sorrow that I share with you our loss of one of the Whiting Forest hives. It was just 3 weeks ago that we had two live hives, so as the weather started to turn warm, it was NOT a good sign that there wasn’t any activity outside of the hive. I don’t
- [What is all the BUZZZZ?](https://dowgardens.org/what-is-all-the-buzzzz/): I am sure you all have times when it is so busy, that you don’t even know where to start. That is how I have felt with starting the season with a variety of hive situations. It is HARD to keep track of all of the details: If the hive didn’t make it, do we
- [NOW WHAT?](https://dowgardens.org/now-what/): When I last reported in, we had one hive that was still hanging on (but not strong)…well, Elly stopped by and determined that we had lost the last hive too. She and her fearless volunteer, Alex, then ventured out the next day, on March 25th to clean the dead out and prepare the hive for
- [As Summer Winds Down](https://dowgardens.org/as-summer-winds-down/): It has been a busy summer at Dow Gardens with programs being back in full swing. We have kept on top of our beekeeping, but I regret that we haven’t shared more of the journey on this blog. We have managed to maintain all 4 hives through the summer, however, the status and progress varies
- [“Take Your Losses in the Fall”](https://dowgardens.org/take-your-losses-in-the-fall/): This is a phrase I have been hearing all too often this year. The concept is, as you evaluate your hives for their preparation for winter, if you identify major issues, you have to decide whether or not to take drastic steps such as requeening so late in the fall. Is it worth it? Will
- [Spring Adventures in Beekeeping](https://dowgardens.org/spring-adventures-in-bee-keeping/): I cannot believe it is June 15th already! Seems like just yesterday we were anxiously awaiting spring and today it is 95 degrees in the shade. That said, we decided an early morning inspection was necessary because of some situations we have happening in one of our hives. The Dow Gardens beekeepers (and bees!) have been
- [After Work Adventures in Beekeeping](https://dowgardens.org/after-work-adventures-in-beekeeping/): Usually our bee blog follows the escapades of the honey bees of Dow Gardens and their beekeepers. This edition, however, is brought on by a rare opportunity provided by social media. We see it all of the time, people trying to figure out how to co-exist with ‘creatures’ great and small. Of late, there have been
- [Thrips: The Insects Hidden Within Dow Gardens](https://dowgardens.org/thrips-the-insects-hidden-within-dow-gardens/): While walking through the winding paths of Dow Gardens, we, the interns from Michigan State University (MSU) St. Andrews research facility, were determined to find and record the wide diversity of pollen that surrounded us. What we didn’t realize when collecting samples, however, was that there was a hitchhiker we often brought with us. When
- [Pollen: The Hidden World of Flowers ](https://dowgardens.org/pollen-the-hidden-world-of-flowers/): Everyone appreciates the world's pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, and more, but when it comes down to giving pollen itself credit, we often fall short. This summer, high school students and recent graduates in the Midland area are taking part in the Michigan State University St. Andrews Research Internship. These students are gaining an interesting
- [Spring has Sprung in Michigan](https://dowgardens.org/spring-has-sprung-in-michigan/): 2023 has brought a fresh start to the sister hives at Whiting, including a new location with more daylight. We are happy with the location, and this year decided to invest in building a hive stand and improve the aesthetics of the location. This week, we relied on our favorite carpenter, jack-of-all-trades Tyler, to help
- [What is wrong with my HIVE?](https://dowgardens.org/what-is-wrong-with-my-hive/): We mentioned that one of the hives at the Gardens had a VERY spotty brood pattern and we were concerned and watching it. After a few inspections, this hive was lagging behind and the brood pattern was not improving. We began to worry there might be a more serious issue. This is where having more
