We had been toying with the idea for quite some time, and quite honestly we had a million ideas for themes that we could do. For our first launch, we settled on a topic that we work with the most - soviet "iconography". - [Schloss Hennersdorf (Pałacu w Jędrzychowicach)](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/schloss-hennersdorf/): Name: Schloss Hennersdorf (Pałacu w Jędrzychowicach)Date of Construction: 1611 (most likely earlier)Status: RuinAddress: Jędrzychowice 54, 59-900 Jędrzychowice, PolandGeo Coordinates: 51.18413457635162, 15.017954278425568Date Of Visit: September, 2025 - [Panzertruppenschule Wünsdorf | Headquarters of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/panzertruppenschule-wuensdorf/): Name: Panzertruppenschule Wünsdorf (Headquarters of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany)Date of Construction: 1933Status: AbandonedAddress: Hauptallee 118, 15806 ZossenGeo Coordinates: 52.164737359656804, 13.480405916348483Date Of Visit: April, 2025 - [Schule für Heeresmotorisierung (Wünsdorf)](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/schule-fuer-heeresmotorisierung-wuensdorf/): Name: Schule für Heeresmotorisierung (Schule Nr. 1 Wünsdorf)Date of Construction: 1933Status: AbandonedAddress: Moscheestraße 7, 15806 ZossenGeo Coordinates: 52.16719225750207, 13.48579502943031Date Of Visit: May, 2025 - [Portola Süßwarenfabrik](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/veb-portola-suesswarenfabrik/): Name: Portola Süßwarenfabrik (Schokoladenfabrik Pflöger & Krause, Candy M.)Date of Construction: 1913Status: Abandoned, partly burnt out (as of 2025)Address: Allerstraße 1, 39126 MagdeburgGeo Coordinates: 52.159933, 11.663800Date Of Visit: April 2025 - [VEB Börde Brauerei Magdeburg](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/veb-boerde-brauerei-magdeburg/): Name: VEB Börde-Brauerei Magdeburg (Brauerei Bodenstein)Date of Construction: 1823Status: Partially demolished, only the malt silo left (as of 2025)Address: Sieverstorstraße 49, 39106 MagdeburgGeo Coordinates: 52.148853, 11.648339Date Of Visit: April 2025 - [The 10 Graves of Adolf Hitler](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/adolf-hitler-grave/): 25 years (almost to the day) after of Adolf Hitlers suicide - his, and the ashes of some of his compatriots - were unceremoniously dumped into the river Ehle outside of Magedburg. One could be forgiven for just giving them a passing glance, but a giant lion statue - especially the "Flensburger Löwe" (Lion of Flensburg) deserves a closer inspection. - [The Winkeltürme of Wünsdorf](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/winkelturm/): The Germans had a knack for building bunkers, from tiny one-man-bunkers to the monstrous U-Boat bunkers in Bremen and Brest. Considering how many different variations of bunkers the Germans built between 1933 and 1945, it would be quite the impossible task to quantify them (though some have floated a six digit number). While a considerable amount of bunkers, and especially air raid shelters had survived the end of the war - many of them aren't visible to us, but there is one bunker type that sticks out like a sore thumb - the Winkelturm. - [The Brandenburg Gates](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/brandenburg-gate/): Few monuments encapsulate the image of Germany (and Berlin) as much as the Brandenburg Gate. Of all the National Monuments in Germany, the neoclassical structure is by far the most recognisable (i'm quite sure it's also the only one that people would be able to name offhand) . While its meaning and symbolism (for the people) has changed over the decades, from symbolising the end of Napoleon's rule, German Reunification, or even just a pretty photo spot for tourists - it continues to be an important backdrop for demonstrations and social events. - [Fort Zorndorf (Fort Sarbinowo)](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/fort-zorndorf/): Name: Fort Zorndorf (Fort Sarbinowo)Date of Construction: 1883–1889Status: Ruin, abandoned since the early 1990s (as of 2023)Address: DK31, 66-470 Kostrzyn nad Odrą, PolandGeo Coordinates: 52.621734, 14.668567Date Of Visit: October 2023Legal Visit: Yes, though signs in Polish warn not to enter the structure - [The Tank Cemetery Aachen](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/tank-cemetery-aachen/): Name: Tank Cemetery Aachen (Panzerfriedhof, Truppenübungsplatz Stolberg-Münsterbusch)Date of Construction: Training area 1937, tanks placed as targets around the mid-1970sStatus: Five tank wrecks on an open military training area (as of 2023)Address: Am Forsthaus, 52078 AachenGeo Coordinates: 50.759910, 6.188670Date Of Visit: 2023 - [The Nazi Eagles of Cologne](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/nazi-eagles-cologne/): Our (historical) search for Nazi eagles continues. Until the early 2000s, the hospital bunker was left more or less as it was, completely stocked with expired medical equipment and instruments, though over the last few years (2021-2023) it seems like it's become a target for trophy hunters and vandals who have picked it clean and smashed up the interior. - [Flugplatz Alt Daber (Wittstock/Dosse)](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/flugplatz-alt-daber-wittstock-dosse/): Name: Flugplatz Alt Daber (Fliegerhorst Wittstock, Аэродром Витшток)Date of Construction: 1934 (glider field), 1938–1939 (air base)Status: Mostly demolished, solar farm, listed buildings derelict (as of 2023)Address: Flugplatzallee, 16909 Wittstock/DosseGeo Coordinates: 53.197350, 12.516054Date Of Visit: June 2023 - [The Twin Villas of Fürstenwalde](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/twin-villas-fuerstenwalde/): Name: The Twin Villas of Fürstenwalde (Russen-Villen)Date of Construction: 1913–1925Status: Abandoned, collapsing, demolition likely (as of 2023)Address: Dr.-Wilhelm-Külz-Straße 12, 15517 Fürstenwalde/SpreeGeo Coordinates: 52.366326, 14.047338Date Of Visit: 2023 - [Brandenburgische Motorenwerke (Bramo Werk)](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/brandenburgische-motorenwerke-bramo-werk/): Name: Brandenburgische Motorenwerke (Bramo Werk) and Zühlsdorfer Motorenwerke (Zümo Werk)Date of Construction: 1938Status: Ruins in the forest, factory sites used by companies (as of 2023)Address: Zühlsdorfer Str. 22C, 16348 WandlitzGeo Coordinates: 52.723558, 13.409092Date Of Visit: 2023 - [Mars La Tour Kaserne Fürstenwalde](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/mars-la-tour-kaserne-fuerstenwalde/): Name: Mars La Tour Kaserne (Radfahrerkaserne) FürstenwaldeDate of Construction: 1937–1943Status: Abandoned, mostly demolished, one building left (as of 2023)Address: Alter Postweg, 15518 RauenGeo Coordinates: 52.347645, 14.039040Date Of Visit: 2023 - [Hotel Fürstenhof](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/hotel-fuerstenhof/): Name: Hotel Fürstenhof Eisenach (Villa Bornemann, Kurhaus Hotel Fürstenhof, Hotel Stadt Eisenach)Date of Construction: 1854 (villa), 1902 (hotel)Status: Ruin, partly collapsed, demolition approved (as of 2023)Address: Luisenstraße 11/13, 99817 EisenachGeo Coordinates: 50.969503, 10.325855Date Of Visit: August 2022 - [The Nazi Eagles of Brandenburg](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/nazi-eagles-brandenburg/): Our (historical) search for Nazi eagles continues. While we've been "blessed" with the temporary introduction of the €9 and €29 Ticket, and a pause in price hikes in 2022 during the peak corona "wave" - the year 2023 greets us with a steep price increase for all public transport fares in Berlin. As we were curious how the public transport fares have increased over the years in Berlin, we decided to dig a little deeper and create a nice little overview how things have changed. - [Hermann Görings Bison Monument](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/wisentdenkmal-eichhorst/): But not much attention is given to his role as Reichsforstmeister (Reichs Forest Master) - which put him in charge of all of Germany's forestry and hunting matters. And as no Nazi story seemingly would be complete without an occult or ultra-germanic undertone, Hermann Görings legacy as "Forest Master" continues to live on in the form of a giant Bison sculpture (Wisentdenkmal) in a tiny Brandenburg village. - [NVA Flugplatz Löpten](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/flugplatz-loepten/): Name: NVA Flugplatz Löpten (Ausweichflugplatz Klein Köris)Date of Construction: 1966–1969Status: Abandoned, munitions bunker used by a disposal firm (as of 2022)Address: 15746 Groß KörisGeo Coordinates: 52.146776, 13.696250Date Of Visit: 2022 - [The Avro Lancaster Crash Site](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/avro-lancaster-crash-site/): Name: Avro Lancaster Crash Site (RAF bomber wreck)Date of Crash: 1944Status: Wing and engine fragments in a field (as of 2022)Address: 15757 Märkisch BuchholzGeo Coordinates: 52.108922, 13.751493Date Of Visit: 2022 - [Julius Fučík Memorial](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/julius-fucik-memorial-berlin/): While many memorials and pieces of public art that were erected during the reign of the German Democratic Republic were removed or altered after German reunification, more than just a handful have seemingly escaped that fate and continue stand in all their glory in the East Berlin district of Pankow. One of the the larger memorials to have stood the test of time is the Julius Fučík Memorial in the Bürgerpark Pankow, dedicated to the antifascist czech writer Julius Fučík. - [Villa Bogensee](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/villa-bogensee/): Name: Villa Bogensee (Waldhof am Bogensee)Date of Construction: 1939–1940Status: Empty, locked, owned by the State of Berlin (as of 2022)Address: Platz der Freundschaft 1A, 16348 WandlitzGeo Coordinates: 52.774173, 13.526243Date Of Visit: September 2022 - [Denkmal für die Gefallenen der Garde Pioniere](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/denkmal-gefallenen-garde-pioniere-kirche-am-suedstern/): While traveling through Brandenburg, one can't fail to notice how the villages and towns take care of their War memorials. Unfortunately the same can't be said for many of Berlin's First World War memorials - a prime negative example being the "Denkmal für die Gefallenen der Garde Pioniere" - the monument to the Pioneer Guards in Kreuzberg, Berlin. - [NVA Flugabwehr-Raketenabteilung 4123 Klosterfelde](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/nva-flugabwehr-raketenabteilung-klosterfelde/): Name: NVA Fla-Raketenabteilung 4123 (FRA-4123) KlosterfeldeDate of Construction: 1960sStatus: Abandoned, partly collapsed (as of 2022)Address: Klosterfelder Weg, 16559 LiebenwaldeGeo Coordinates: 52.810299, 13.448681Date Of Visit: 2022 - [The Bridge of German Soviet Friendship](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/bridge-of-german-soviet-friendship/): The majority of symbols and emblems related to the German Democratic Republic quickly vanished after the German Reunification in 1990. While some East German symbols can occasionally still be found, they tend to be far and few between, so it's always a surprise to find one out in the wild so to speak. Even more surprising when its a giant German-Soviet Logo next to a busy road in remembrance of the "Bridge of German Soviet Friendship". - [The Bülow Pyramide](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/buelow-pyramide-grossbeeren/): Brandenburg is full of lovely architectural and historical discoveries. While the region has a (not always unfounded) reputation for being somewhat dull and unfriendly, almost every village has something unique to see, be it a Kriegerdenkmal, Bismarckturm or in the case of Großbeeren - the Bülow Pyramide. - [The MFS Buchheide – The Stasi Hotel](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/mfs-buchheide-stasi-hotel-templin/): Name: MFS Buchheide (Stasi Hotel, Stasi-Heim)Date of Construction: Mid 1980s–1989 (never completed)Status: Abandoned concrete shell (as of 2022)Address: Zur Buchheide, 17268 TemplinGeo Coordinates: 53.104164, 13.526529Date Of Visit: 2022 - [9 Legal Lost Places to visit in and around Berlin (and 10 that you can’t)](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/legal-lost-places-berlin-brandenburg/): Urban Exploring has become quite a mainstream activity over the years, thanks to its ever growing presence and popularity on sites like youtube, reddit and even tiktok. Even this website contributes to people gaining interest in exploring abandoned factories, soviet military bases and train stations and finding out more about their history. Of course even the city of Berlin has jumped in on the action to cash in on its abandoned places. And to be honest I can't really blame them. The demand is there, and Tourists, Photographers and Urbexers will come and explore the ruins that this city has to offer. - [The Galata Tower of Brandenburg](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/wasserturm-niederlehme/): It seems like no matter where you go in or around Berlin, the scenery is somehow always accompanied by a tower. Be it the picturesque water tower in Prenzlauer Berg, the funkturm in Charlottenburg, the Grunewaldturm in Grunewald - or the iconic TV tower that dominates Berlin's skyline. But there's one tower located on the Berlin Ring Road which has captivated us for years with its distinct architecture - and strange placement - that we just had to visit it: the Wasserturm Niederlehme aka Brandenburgs Galata Tower. - [Kraftwerk Vogelsang](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/kraftwerk-vogelsang/): Name: Kraftwerk Vogelsang (Wernerwerk, Einheitskraftwerk)Date of Construction: 1943–1945Status: Ruin, nature reserve, privately owned (as of 2022)Address: Buchwaldstraße, 15890 EisenhüttenstadtGeo Coordinates: 52.167805, 14.700916Date Of Visit: 2022 - [Flugplatz Rangsdorf](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/flugplatz-rangsdorf/): Name: Flugplatz Rangsdorf (Reichssportflughafen Rangsdorf, Bücker Werke)Date of Construction: 1935–1936Status: Abandoned, partly converted, redevelopment planned (as of 2022)Address: Walther-Rathenau-Straße 91, 15834 RangsdorfGeo Coordinates: 52.283341, 13.429003Date Of Visit: 2015 and 2022 - [Kriegerdenkmal Rahnsdorf](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/gefallenendenkmal-schonungsberg-rahnsdorf/): Rahnsdorf is the easternmost district of Berlin and many people probably associate the area with its picturesque nature, the cute Woltersdorfer Tram, and the canals of Neu-Venedig (and Berlin's smallest ferry). The district of Rahnsdorf has more to offer than just beautiful nature, and in this case we were particularly interested in the Kriegerdenkmal Rahnsdorf - one of the many World War I memorials in Berlin and Brandenburg. - [ Olympiastadion Wünsdorf](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/alter-sportplatz-wuensdorf/): Name: Olympiastadion Wünsdorf (Alter Sportplatz, GSSD Sportplatz)Date of Construction: Before 1920 (parade ground), sports ground from 1924Status: Disused, pitch and track maintained, stands in ruins (as of 2022)Address: Zehrensdorfer Straße, 15806 Zossen (Wünsdorf)Geo Coordinates: 52.192321, 13.466768Date Of Visit: March 2022 - [Jagdschloss Schwarzhorn](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/jagdschloss-schwarzhorn/): Name: Jagdschloss Schwarzhorn (Hotel und Restaurant Jagdschloss Schwarzhorn)Date of Construction: 1897–1901Status: Ruin, fenced in (as of 2022)Address: Schwarzhorner Weg, 15864 Wendisch RietzGeo Coordinates: 52.219781, 14.016312Date Of Visit: 2022 - [Kriegerdenkmal Woltersdorf (bei Berlin)](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/kriegerdenkmal-woltersdorf/): When traveling through the villages of Brandenburg one can always be assured to find at least three things: A bakery, a cemetary, and a "Kriegerdenkmal" - a war memorial. While many of the villages can often be described as rather plain, their war memorials are always beautifully restored and well taken care of. While there was a standard template for a memorial, many of the German Kriegerdenkmäler often added a unique touch to their designs and the Kriegerdenkmal Woltersdorf - also known as the "Fidus Denkmal" - is no exception. But even amongst the other German War Memorials, this one has a feature which makes it stand out from the rest. - [The Abandoned Soviet Training Tank](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/uebungspanzer-wuensdorf/): Name: Soviet Übungspanzer (training tank, modelled on a T-54)Date of Construction: Soviet era, exact date unknownStatus: Abandoned, rusting in the forest (as of 2022)Address: Not disclosedGeo Coordinates: Not disclosedDate Of Visit: 2022 - [Bismarckturm Zehdenick](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/bismarckturm-zehdenick/): While travelling through Brandenburg, it's not uncommon to come across monumental towers made of brick or fieldstones, often in wide open fields or on top of small hills. What might be put off as just another random stone tower (there are quite a few in German), might actually be a Bismarckturm - a stone made symbol of devotion to the deceased "Iron Chancellor". We spotted the Bismarckturm Zehdenick while on route to Fürstenberg, so we decided to take a short detour and have a closer look. - [The Lenin of Fürstenbergs School Nr 27](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/fuerstenberg-lenin/): Name: Lenin bust of the Soviet School Nr. 27 (Школа №27 ГСВГ Фюрстенберг)Date of Construction: Soviet era, exact date unknownStatus: Toppled, lying in the bushes near its old spot (as of 2021)Address: Peetscher Höhe, 16798 Fürstenberg/HavelGeo Coordinates: 53.179589, 13.130177Date Of Visit: 2014 and 2021 - [Cosmonauts, Communists, and the Kremlin in East Berlin](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/leben-heinz-worner/): The district of Niederschöneweide in Treptow-Köppenick isn't an area that we explore much these days, but we couldn't resist when we found out that there was an interesting piece of public art tucked away next to a school behind an S-Bahn depot. We are suckers for overtly socialist pieces of public art, but what heightened out interest was the fact that this piece was created Heinz Worner. - [The Pressecafe](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/pressecafe-berlin/): During the construction Haus des Berliner Verlages, a smaller secondary building was built right next to it - the Pressecafe. The Pressecafe was a two story - low rise cafe and restaurant, and a popular haunt for the journalist working next door, and for those who wanted to glimpse at the foreign publications that were available in the cafe. - [The Nazi legacy of the Grazer Damm](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/grazer-damm/): With all their grandeur and bombast, the Nazis actually only managed to complete very few large-scale housing projects in Berlin - one of them being the "Siedlung Grazer Damm" in Schöneberg - which from its name down to its design is steeped in fascist symbolism. - [The AVUS](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/avus-tribuene-berlin/): Name: AVUS (Automobil-Verkehrs- und Übungsstraße)Date of Construction: 1913–1921Status: Tribüne being converted, Südkurve model neglected (as of 2021)Address: Messedamm 23, 14055 Berlin-CharlottenburgGeo Coordinates: 52.49986763112489, 13.273751523251304Date Of Visit: 2014 and 2021 - [Fürstenbergs Soviet Murals](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/soviet-memorial-droegen-fuerstenberg/): Fürstenberg - or to use its full name Wasserstadt Fürstenberg/Havel - has a long and difficult history. Its founding dates back to at least the middle of the 13th Century, but regardless of its achievements - its history is overshadowed by years of Nazi rule, the Concentration Camp Ravensbrück and nearly 50 years of Soviet military presence. While the most ominous remnants of the Nazis have either been demolished or turned into memorials to its victims, the traces of the Soviet "guests" in and around Fürstenberg have quietly vanished over the years. But the last holdouts of the Soviet legacy can still be found, like the Soviet Mural of Fürstenberg. - [Berlins Chernobyl Memorials](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/berlin-chernobyl-memorial/): 35 years after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the event the aftermath have had consequences that still impact us to this day. The area around (and) Chernobyl itself has become a urbex Disneyland for many adventurers and the catastrophe has been made into an HBO series (where everyone speaks with english accents) recently. The nuclear catastrophe has a morbid allure - though the real life consequences of displacement, death and the fact that 2,600 km2 have been turned into an exclusion zone are mostly glossed over. With the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster on the 26th of April, we decided to see if we could locate any Chernobyl Memorials in Berlin. - [Bunker Wünsdorf Zeppelin | Bunkeranlage Maybach](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/bunker-wuensdorf-zeppelin-maybach/): Name: Bunker Zeppelin (Amt 500) and Bunkeranlage Maybach I and IIDate of Construction: 1937–1940Status: Zeppelin open for guided tours, Maybach I in ruins (as of 2021)Address: Zeppelinstraße 12, 15806 ZossenGeo Coordinates: 52.192398, 13.469752Date Of Visit: 2021 - [Gut Gentzrode](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/gut-gentzrode/): Name: Gut Gentzrode (Herrenhaus and Kornspeicher Gentzrode)Date of Construction: 1858–1877Status: Listed, ruined and fenced off, tower fire in November 2020 (as of 2020)Address: Gut Gentzrode, 16816 NeuruppinGeo Coordinates: 52.978338, 12.796649Date Of Visit: 2020 - [Everything you didn’t know about Berlins Leninplatz](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/leninplatz-berlin/): As the German art critic and author Karl Scheffler once put it - "Berlin is damned always to become and never to be" - and even 110 years later this statement couldn't ring truer. No matter where you go in Berlin, if you just lightly scratch the historical surface of any building or square, you'll most likely dig up 300 year’s worth of politics and regime changes. The square formerly known as Leninplatz is a prime example of Berlins perpetuum mobile-like history. - [Lager Koralle](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/lager-koralle/): Name: Lager Koralle (Headquarters of the Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine)Date of Construction: 1939–1942Status: Ruins, Fernmeldebunker closed off (as of 2020)Address: Lager Koralle, 16359 WandlitzGeo Coordinates: 52.738820, 13.574131Date Of Visit: 2020 - [Kernkraftwerk Greifswald](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/kernkraftwerk-greifswald/): Name: Kernkraftwerk Greifswald (VEB Kernkraftwerk "Bruno Leuschner")Date of Construction: 1969–1973 (Nord I)Status: Being dismantled, reactor 6 open for tours (as of 2020)Address: Latzower Straße 1, 17509 RubenowGeo Coordinates: 54.139101, 13.668027Date Of Visit: 2020 - [Vierter Ring – Hitlers unfinished Autobahn](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/vierter-ring-hitlers-unfinished-autobahn/): "Germania" - the mythical capital of the Third Reich. Looking back at the plans that Albert Speer came up with for Adolf Hitler in 1935, one can only wonder how the Nazis thought they could ever realize their supersized construction plans. From the monstrous Volkshalle with an intended capacity of 180,000 to the gargantuan 117 meter tall Triumph Arch - all of Berlin was to be remodelled into a capital city worthy of an empire not seen since the antiques. It all came differently though, hardly any of Speers and Hitlers plans were ever fully realised, and very little of what was has survived to this day. What has survived though is a sliver of Hitlers Autobahn in Berlin. - [Chemiewerk Rüdersdorf](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/chemiewerk-ruedersdorf/): Name: Chemiewerk RüdersdorfDate of Construction: 1900Status: Partially demolishedAddress: Gutenbergstraße, 15562 Rüdersdorf bei BerlinGeo Coordinates: 52.48395874840753, 13.789423299906186Date Of Visit: 2018 - [Germanys last Lenin](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/lenin-schwerin/): It's been 29 years since the cold war ended. The Soviet Union and its satellite states no longer exist (at least not in their communist form). Decades of frustration and anger were taken out on the physical manifestations of the regimes - mainly on the unpopular statues of Lenin and Stalin, smashing them to bits. After German reunification, a great purge of communist symbols washed over East Germany - and Lenin soon vanished from the public eye. But like the Highlander - one defiant Lenin in Schwerin survived - making him the last Lenin in Germany. - [Heilstätte Grabowsee](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/heilstaette-grabowsee-oranienburg/): Name: Heilstätte Grabowsee (Lungenheilstätte Grabowsee)Date of Construction: 1896Status: Abandoned, legal visits by appointment, housing planned (as of 2021)Address: Malzer Weg 19, 16515 Oranienburg (Schmachtenhagen)Geo Coordinates: 52.786153, 13.292613Date Of Visit: 2020 - [Panzerkaserne Bernau](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/panzerkaserne-bernau/): Name: Panzerkaserne Bernau (Heeresbekleidungsamt Bernau Hauptamt)Date of Construction: 1939–1942Status: Mostly demolished, main building kept for redevelopment (as of 2020)Address: Schwanebecker Chaussee 50, 16321 Bernau bei BerlinGeo Coordinates: 52.669132, 13.580870Date Of Visit: 2013 - [The 12 Soviet War Memorials of Berlin](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/soviet-war-memorials-berlin/): How many Soviet War Memorials are there in Berlin? More than you think! We explore and explain the 12 Soviet War Memorials of Berlin. - [Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Schöneiche](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/sowjetisches-ehrenmal-schoeneiche/): The Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Schöneiche is one of the farthest and most difficult Soviet War memorial in Berlin to get to. Schöneiche bei Berlin as its name suggests is not actually in Berlin, but next to it. Sort of. The grounds that the Soviet War Memorial stands on belongs to both Schöneiche bei Berlin and Berlin. - [Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Treptower Park](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/sowjetisches-ehrenmal-treptower-park/): The Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Treptower Park is both the largest Soviet War Memorial in Germany, as well as quite possibly being the most recognisable. It's not without reason that this memorial is regarded as the central Soviet War Memorial in all of Germany. - [Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Tiergarten](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/sowjetisches-ehrenmal-tiergarten/): Arguably the most important Soviet War Memorial in Berlin (and Germany) is the Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Tiergarten. Its size and central location - in the heart of Berlin - were a deliberate choice by the Soviets to make the grandest statement possible. Whilst its not the largest Soviet War Memorial in Berlin, it is the only one to have been built in a western sector. - [Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Güterfelde](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/sowjetisches-ehrenmal-gueterfelde/): The Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Güterfelde - also sometimes referenced to as the Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Wilmersdorf is arguably the most difficult to reach of Berlins Soviet War Memorials. As you can take from the name, this War Memorial is located in Güterfelde, which is lies in Brandenburg and not Berlin. Like the Soviet Memorial in Schöneiche, this memorial technically still lies in Berlin though as it is located on the Wilmersdorfer Waldfriedhof - a cemetery belonging to the Berlin district of Wilmersdorf-Charlottenburg. - [Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Marzahn](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/sowjetisches-ehrenmal-marzahn/): The Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Marzahn, which sits on the northwestern end of the Parkfriedhof Marzahn - a large cemetery park in Marzahn - was officially unveiled on the 7th of November 1958. - [Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Herzbergstraße](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/sowjetisches-ehrenmal-herzbergstrasse/): The Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Herzbergstraße can be found on the grounds of the Evangelisches Krankenhaus Königin Elisabeth Herzberge in Lichtenberg (Queen Elisabeth Herzberge Protestant Hospital). - [Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Kaulsdorf](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/sowjetisches-ehrenmal-kaulsdorf/): Not much aside from the basic facts are known about the Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Kaulsdorf. When the Soviets marched into Kaulsdorf (back then a district of Lichtenberg), they buried their war dead in the local cemetery in the Bordauer Straße. The Soviets built a memorial in 1946 consisting of an Obelisk and several stone plaques with inscriptions to commemorate those who died and were buried there. The dead were moved to the Sowjetisches Ehrenmal in Treptower Park between 1947 and 1948, despite it not being officially finished until 1949. - [Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Staaken](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/sowjetisches-ehrenmal-staaken/): Spandau must have one of the highest densities of memorials in all of Berlin. Wherever you go, you’ll spot a plaque, statue or memorial dedicated to something or someone. So, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that you’ll find one of Berlins 12 Soviet War memorials here, the Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Staaken. - [Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Rummelsburg](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/sowjetisches-ehrenmal-rummelsburg/): The Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Rummelsburg - or as it is also alternatively known Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Nöldnerstraße or Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Lichtenberg is somewhat shrouded in mystery. It seems like there is very little publicly available information available for this monument. It doesn’t seem to be listed in the Districts Memorial Database, and none of the literature I could dig up seemed to mention anything substantial - [Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Alt-Hohenschönhausen](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/sowjetisches-ehrenmal-alt-hohenschoenhausen/): The Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Alt-Hohenschönhausen, also known as the Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Küstriner Straße or Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Hohenschönhausen is the youngest of Berlins Soviet War Memorials. As with all Sowjetische Ehrenmale in Berlin, its origins date back to the Soviet Invasion of Berlin. The Soviet Troops marched into Berlin on the 21st of April, 1945 and one of the first areas to be completely captured was Hohenschönhausen (On the 25th of April, 1945). - [The Story Behind (Allegedly) Londons Smallest Police Station](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/londons-smallest-police-station/): Trafalgar square might be one of the busiest and well known squares in London. With its giant Nelson Column, the fourth plinth, dirty pigeons and its central location, the square has been a popular meeting spot for decades. Though Trafalgar Square holds many little interesting secretes - its become rather well known for being home to Londons smallest police station, some even say the smallest police station in the UK or even the world. But is that actually true? - [Kuppelkreuz – The cross of the Berlin Cathedral](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/kuppelkreuz-berliner-dom/): Few buildings in Berlin define the "skyline" and the city as much as the Berlin Cathedral. The imposing Neo-renaisance Cathedral is a tourist magnet, only dwarfed in visitor numbers by the Cathedral in Cologne. While many simply enjoy the building from the outside - few realize that you can actually scale the building up to the dome and enjoy a majestic view of the Museums Island. Even fewer realize that you can visit the "top" of the Berliner Dom - the Kuppelkreuz - without having to pay or walk up 270 steps, simply by visiting a local cemetery called the Domfriedhof. - [The abandoned Stadtbad Lichtenberg](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/abandoned-stadtbad-lichtenberg-hubertusbad/): Name: Stadtbad Lichtenberg | HubertusbadDate of Construction: 1919 - 1925Status: Closed, Heritage protectedAddress: Atzpodienstraße 6, 10365 BerlinGeo Coordinates: 52.513207850782955, 13.494129439376508Date Of Visit: September, 2017Legal Visit: Yes. As of 2024, several legal tours and open days have made the Hubertusbad accessible again. - [The Staatsratsgebäude](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/staatsratsgebaeude-berlin-ddr/): With East Berlin becoming the new capital of the newly founded German Democratic Republic, the communists sought to leave their architectural mark over the next 40 years. With German reunification, a new wind swept through the country, slowly removing almost all traces of the former east. But one building in the heart of Berlin which (un)ironically merged the gilded (baroque and) Prussian age with the highest political levels of communism endures to this day: The Staatsratsgebäude. - [Superfest – The (almost) unbreakable East German Glass](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/superfest-ceverit-glass-ddr/): While most can and will consider German reunification a "success story", the merger of the two German states also meant the loss of identity, purpose, and direction for many. There are plenty of articles, books and documentaries out there which deal with the subject of East German identity far better than I ever could - but I inadvertently came across some GDR Lab Beakers which sent me down an East German rabbit hole. I emerged a few days later with a box full of Superfest Gläser - a nearly unbreakable and forgotten glass from East Germany. ## Pages - [Urban Exploration in Berlin](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/facts/urban-exploration-berlin/): Facts about urban exploration and abandoned sites in Berlin: site types, history, legal framework, safety and coverage by Digital Cosmonaut. - [Urban Exploration in Brandenburg](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/facts/urban-exploration-brandenburg/): Facts about urban exploration and abandoned sites in the German state of Brandenburg: site types, history, legal framework, safety and coverage by Digital Cosmonaut. - [Facts](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/facts/): Reference pages with the key facts about the places and topics Digital Cosmonaut documents: urban exploration in Berlin and Brandenburg. - [Faces From The East](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/faces-from-the-east/): The German Democratic Republic - and the over 1,100 Soviet military installations within it - were once home to 500,000 Soviet soldiers and countless military family members. Entire cities sprung up in every, and often the most remote, corners of East Germany. With the collapse of not one but two political systems, an unknown future awaited. - [Urban Exploring Saxony](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/urban-exploring-saxony/): The region of Saxony in Germany boasts a rich and diverse cultural history dating back to the early Middle Ages. Once a powerful duchy and later an electorate within the Holy Roman Empire, Saxony flourished during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, becoming a center of art, music, and architecture. The Kingdom of Saxony in the 19th century further elevated its status, with influence extending into areas that are now part of Poland and the Czech Republic. The landscape is dotted with numerous castles, palaces, and once opulent manors belonging to local nobility and wealthy industrialists-many of which have fallen into disrepair and obscurity over time. - [Nazi Eagles](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/nazi-eagles/): A few years ago, while we were walking through Berlin, we noticed a Nazi Reichsadler sitting atop a building. This wasn't the first Nazi Eagle that we had spotted in Berlin, so we asked ourselves, just how many Nazi era eagles had "survived" in Berlin? So the hunt began - and still continues to this day. While we believe to have uncovered most of the remaining eagles in Berlin, we decided to branch out and document the other eagles we had come across while urban exploring and traveling through Brandenburg, Bavaria,  Hamburg and the rest of Germany.  - [Abandoned Airports](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/abandoned-airports/): Berlin and Brandenburg are home to some of the most iconic airports in the world, with a rich history that spans both military and civilian use. From the early days of aviation to the modern era of air travel, these airports have played a crucial role in shaping the region's history and identity such as the Flugplatz Oranienburg, Flugplatz Rangsdorf and Flugplatz Brandis Waldpolenz. - [Urbex Videos](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/urbex-videos/): We've spent the past decade exploring abandoned places in Berlin and throughout Europe - and for the majority of that time we've documented our urbex adventures with our camera, be it film or digital. Almost every village, community, and city have at least one monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the many violent conflicts Germany has found itself in, from the liberation wars of 1813, the first world war up to the second world war. While the dire economic situation during and directly after the first world war hindered many communities from erecting memorials to their fallen fathers, brothers and sons - a downright boom of memorials happened in the mid to late 1920s when the German economy stabilized again. Communities, together with their local "Landwehrvereine" (Veterans Associations) were encouraged to use local and familiar building materials - giving each memorial a distinct look and feel. - [Explore Brandenburg](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/brandenburg/): 3 months ago - [Urbex FAQ](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/urbex-faq/): I quite often get messages and emails with questions regarding my urban exploring posts - most of them being about locations and tips - so I decided to do a quick summary of them here. Connected to the Berlin S-Bahn its a popular destination for day trippers as well as commuters. The area of what is now Oranienburg has been populated since at least the 12th Century - but saw its most rapid expansion and growth to prosperity in the beginning of the 19th Century with the onset of industrialisation. While Oranienburg has a long and rich history, it is sadly overshadowed for being the location of two Nazi Concentration Camps - the KZ Oranienburg and the KZ Sachsenhausen. - [Urban Exploring Brandenburg](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/lost-places-brandenburg/): The region of Brandenburg in Germany has a rich and diverse cultural history dating back to the 9th century. The region saw its largest expansion from the 18th century onwards thanks the Kingdom of Prussia, with a large part of its territory being located in what is now Poland. The region is dotted with thousands of small castles and once luxurious manors belonging to the various local nobility - of which many have since fallen into disrepair and obscurity.  - [Subscribe to our Newsletter](https://digitalcosmonaut.com/newsletter/): Interested in periodically hearing from us?
