The My Favorite Spacetimes app offers two actions to Siri, Shortcuts, Spotlight and on-device agents: Open Spacetime and Open Chart. The link `myfavoritespacetimes:///
?chart=` opens a spacetime in the app, where section is one of history, maths, graphs or references. - [Spacetimes as JSON](https://damiansowinski.com/data/spacetimes.json): All 190 spacetimes with name, id, description, tags, signature, and for each coordinate chart the coordinates, domains, parameters, line element, metric components and curvature invariants, in LaTeX. - [My Favorite Spacetimes](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/): The interactive catalogue, with diagrams; it chooses a spacetime in the browser, so each entry below links its full data file. - [Bibliography of the catalogue](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/references.json): The references each spacetime cites, keyed as in the data files. - [The A- and B-Metrics of Ehlers and Kundt](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/ab_metrics.json): The static vacuum fields of algebraic type D beside Schwarzschild's, which Tullio Levi-Civita constructed and Jürgen Ehlers and Wolfgang Kundt named in 1962: the A-metrics have a hyperbolic or a flat plane where Schwarzschild's field has a sphere, and the B-metrics exchange the time with an angle. Two of them, A II and B I, are the field of a tachyon, Schwarzschild's mass boosted past the speed of light, with a cone of unbounded curvature between them. - [Aichelburg-Sexl Ultraboost](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/aichelburg_sexl.json): The gravitational field of a massless particle, the Schwarzschild field boosted to the speed of light with its energy held fixed. Spacetime is flat on either side of a single null plane, which carries an impulsive gravitational shock wave with the particle at its centre. - [Alcubierre Warp Drive](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/alcubierre.json): A warp bubble metric that contracts space ahead of a ship and expands it behind, allowing travel that is effectively faster than light without locally exceeding light speed. It requires negative energy density (exotic matter) to sustain the bubble. - [Anti-de Sitter](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/anti_de_sitter.json): The maximally symmetric vacuum solution with constant negative curvature, arising from a negative cosmological constant. Its conformal boundary underpins the AdS/CFT correspondence in theoretical physics. - [Anti-de Sitter Soliton](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/ads_soliton.json): A smooth spacetime of negative energy with no horizon: the planar black hole of anti-de Sitter space with its time and one flat direction exchanged, so that the horizon becomes a tip where a circle shrinks to a point. Gary Horowitz and Robert Myers found it in 1998 and conjectured that it is the ground state of its boundary conditions. - [Black Hole Threaded by a Cosmic String](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/string_black_hole.json): A Schwarzschild black hole with a straight cosmic string through it. Off the axis it is Schwarzschild's vacuum, and around the whole axis, horizon included, a wedge is missing whose angle the string's tension sets, which lowers the horizon's area and the black hole's energy at a fixed mass. - [Bach-Weyl Ring](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bach_weyl_ring.json): The static vacuum field of a thin circular ring of matter in Weyl's class, written down by Rudolf Bach in 1922 in a paper with a supplement by Hermann Weyl. Its Weyl potential is Newton's potential of a hoop, a complete elliptic integral. The ring is a naked singularity that lies a finite distance away from outside and an infinite distance away from inside. - [Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/btz.json): A rotating black hole in three spacetime dimensions with a negative cosmological constant. It has constant negative curvature everywhere, being anti-de Sitter space with points identified by a discrete boost, and it carries a temperature and an entropy that can be computed exactly. - [Bardeen Regular Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bardeen.json): A black hole with horizons and no singularity, which James Bardeen proposed in 1968. A ball of de Sitter space sits where Schwarzschild's singularity would be, and Eloy Ayón-Beato and Alberto García showed in 2000 that the field of a magnetic monopole in a nonlinear electrodynamics is its source. - [Bartnik-McKinnon Soliton](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bartnik_mckinnon.json): A static ball of SU(2) Yang-Mills field held together by its own gravity, with a regular centre, no horizon, and flat space far away. Neither a Yang-Mills field nor gravity makes such a ball alone. No formula is known for it: the solutions are found by numerical integration, one for each number of zeros of the field, and every one of them is unstable. - [Bell-Szekeres Colliding Electromagnetic Waves](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bell_szekeres.json): Two plane electromagnetic shock waves colliding head on in flat space. Where both have passed the spacetime is locally the Bertotti-Robinson universe, and the waves focus each other onto a Killing-Cauchy horizon with the curvature finite everywhere. - [Bertotti-Robinson Electrovacuum](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bertotti_robinson.json): A conformally flat electrovacuum solution with uniform electromagnetic field, geometrically the product of two spaces of two dimensions each (AdS₂ × S²). It appears as the limit near the horizon of an extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole. - [Bianchi Anisotropic Cosmologies](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bianchi.json): A family of spatially homogeneous but generally anisotropic cosmologies classified by the symmetry group of their spatial slices. They generalize FLRW models to study anisotropy in the early universe. - [Big Bounce of Loop Quantum Cosmology](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/lqc_bounce.json): The flat universe of a massless scalar field as loop quantum cosmology has it, in which the big bang is replaced by a bounce: the universe contracts to a greatest density, about 0.41 of the Planck density, and expands again. Abhay Ashtekar, Tomasz Pawlowski, and Parampreet Singh found the bounce in 2006, and its effective spacetime is a flat Friedmann universe whose scale factor is $(1 + t^2/t_b^2)^{1/6}$. - [Big Rip Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/big_rip.json): A flat Friedmann universe filled with phantom energy, whose pressure is more negative than minus its energy density. The density grows as space expands, and the scale factor reaches infinity at a finite time, the Big Rip, pulling apart every bound system on the way. - [Black Hole Fireworks, the Tunnelling of a Black Hole into a White Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/black_to_white_hole.json): A shell of light falls in, makes a black hole, and after a long time comes back out of a white hole, in one spacetime with no event horizon and no singularity. Outside a finite region around the bounce the metric is an exact solution of Einstein's equations, flat inside the shell and Schwarzschild's outside it, glued to its own time reverse. Hal Haggard and Carlo Rovelli built it in 2014, and Carlos Barceló, Raúl Carballo-Rubio, and Luis Garay proposed a bounce of the same shape with a short wait. - [Black Saturn](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/black_saturn.json): A black ring turning in balance around a spherical black hole in five dimensions, the exact vacuum solution Henriette Elvang and Pau Figueras built in 2007 by the inverse scattering method. Rotation alone holds the two apart, each drags the other around, and one mass and angular momentum can be shared between them in a continuum of ways. - [Black String](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/black_string.json): Schwarzschild's black hole extended along one more direction of space, a static vacuum solution of gravity in five or more dimensions whose horizon is a cylinder. Ruth Gregory and Raymond Laflamme showed in 1993 that ripples along it longer than about seven horizon radii grow, and numerical evolutions of that instability end in a naked singularity. - [Bondi-Sachs Radiating Metric](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bondi_sachs.json): The form the metric of an isolated body that sends out gravitational waves takes in coordinates built on its outgoing light cones, given by Hermann Bondi, M. G. J. van der Burg, A. W. K. Metzner, and Rainer Sachs in 1962. In it the mass of the body falls for as long as news of a change in the body reaches infinity, and cannot rise. - [Bonnor Beam of Light](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/light_beam.json): The exact gravitational field of a steady beam of light, which William Bonnor found in 1969, a plane-fronted gravitational wave that keeps pace with the light. A ray moving with the beam feels nothing, a ray moving against it is drawn in, and two beams shining the same way do not attract each other. - [Bonnor's Stars of Charged Dust](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bonnor_charged_dust.json): Stars of dust in which every grain carries just enough charge for its electric repulsion to cancel its gravity, so the dust rests in equilibrium with no pressure, in a ball or in any other shape. William Bonnor built a sphere of it in 1965, and in 1975 he and S. B. P. Wickramasuriya made one whose surface lies as close to its own horizon as one likes, so that light from its centre arrives with a redshift as large as one likes. José Lemos and Erick Weinberg called that limit a quasiblack hole. - [Bonnor's Magnetic Dipole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bonnor_magnetic_dipole.json): The static field of a mass with a magnetic dipole moment, the solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations William Bonnor found in 1966. Roberto Emparan showed in 2000 that its two poles are extremal black holes with opposite magnetic charges, held apart by a strut on the axis between them. - [Bonnor's Rotating Dust Cloud](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bonnor_rotating_dust.json): A stationary, axially symmetric cloud of dust in rigid rotation that thins out to nothing in every direction, found by William Bonnor in 1977. Its total mass is zero, its centre is a singularity of negative mass, and the circles about the axis inside a torus around the centre are closed timelike curves. - [Bonnor-Vaidya Charged Radiating Star](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bonnor_vaidya.json): Vaidya's radiating star with a charge: the field of a spherical body that sends out, or takes in, null dust carrying electric charge as well as energy, found by William Bonnor and Prahlad Vaidya in 1970 as an exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. Its mass and its charge are functions of a null time, and where both are constant it is the charged black hole of Reissner and Nordström. - [Born-Infeld Point Charge](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/born_infeld_charge.json): The gravitational field of a point charge in Born and Infeld's electrodynamics, where the electric field stays finite at the charge, which Banesh Hoffmann found in 1935. With its whole mass in its field the charge is a particle with no horizon and a conical point at its centre, and with more mass it is a black hole with one horizon. - [Boson Stars and Geons](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/boson_star.json): A ball of scalar field held together by its own gravity, the heir of John Wheeler's geon of light, found by David Kaup in 1968 and by Remo Ruffini and Silvano Bonazzola in 1969. The field turns in phase at a frequency $\omega$ while the spacetime stays static, with a regular centre and no horizon. The metric is known only numerically, as a solution of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations integrated outward from the centre, and the heaviest star has $M = 0.633\,M_P^2/m$ for bosons of mass $m$, with $M_P$ the Planck mass. - [Boulware-Deser Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/boulware_deser.json): The spherical black hole of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in five dimensions, which David Boulware and Stanley Deser found in 1985. The curvature squared term of string theory keeps its metric function finite at the centre and leaves a small mass with no horizon, and the same field equations have a second solution that approaches anti-de Sitter space. - [Bowers and Liang's Anisotropic Star](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bowers_liang.json): A static star of uniform density whose pressure across the radius differs from its pressure along the radius. Richard Bowers and Edison Liang solved it in 1974: with the sideways pressure the greater of the two, it holds more mass and reddens its light more than Schwarzschild's star of the same density can. - [Braneworld Cosmology](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/brane_wall_universe.json): A universe with three dimensions of space that is a wall in anti-de Sitter space of five, moving through the static black hole of that space, as Per Kraus and Daisuke Ida set it out in 1999. Those who live on the wall read its motion as the expansion of their universe, with a Friedmann equation that carries the square of the density and the black hole's mass as a term that falls off like radiation. - [Brans-Dicke Static Sphere](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/brans_dicke_sphere.json): The gravitational field outside a static, spherical body in Carl Brans and Robert Dicke's theory of 1961, where a scalar field beside the metric sets the strength of gravity from place to place. With the coupling constant $\omega$ it bends light by $(3 + 2\omega)/(4 + 2\omega)$ of Einstein's value, and where Schwarzschild's horizon would stand its spheres shrink to zero area at infinite curvature, with no horizon to hide them. - [Brill's Time-Symmetric Gravitational Waves](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/brill_waves.json): One moment of a spacetime that holds gravitational waves and nothing else, which Dieter Brill constructed in 1959. It is a single slice of space, three dimensions with no time, at the moment the wave is at rest, and it satisfies Einstein's constraint equations with no matter anywhere. Brill proved its mass positive, a strong enough wave already lies inside its own apparent horizon, and what the wave does afterwards is known from computer simulations. - [Brill's Charged Taub-NUT Spacetime](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/brill_charged_taub_nut.json): Taub-NUT with an electric charge, the solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations Dieter Brill found in 1964 as a closed universe filled with gravitational and electromagnetic radiation. It is the Taub-NUT metric at $r_q = 0$ and Reissner and Nordström's at $l = 0$, it has no curvature singularity while $l \neq 0$, and for $r_q^2 > m^2 + l^2$ it has no horizon either and is a wormhole. - [Bubbling Anti-de Sitter Space](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bubbling_ads.json): Every smooth solution of type IIB supergravity in ten dimensions that keeps half of its supersymmetry and the symmetry of two 3-spheres, each one fixed by colouring a plane black and white. A black disc is anti-de Sitter space of five dimensions times a 5-sphere, a black half plane is the maximally supersymmetric plane wave, and any other pattern of droplets is a new geometry with no horizon. Hai Lin, Oleg Lunin, and Juan Maldacena found them in 2004, with the plane the phase space of free fermions in the dual gauge theory. - [C-Metric Accelerating Black Holes](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/c_metric.json): An exact vacuum solution describing two black holes that accelerate away from each other, driven by a cosmic string or a strut along their axis of symmetry. With the acceleration set to zero it is the Schwarzschild black hole. - [Chandrasekhar-Xanthopoulos Colliding Plane Waves](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/chandrasekhar_xanthopoulos.json): Two plane gravitational waves colliding head on in flat space, each an impulse with a shock wave behind it, their polarizations out of line. Where both have passed the spacetime is locally Kerr's between its horizons, and the waves focus each other onto a Killing-Cauchy horizon with the curvature finite. - [Charged Shell of Dust](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/charged_shell.json): A thin spherical shell of charged dust, with flat spacetime inside it and Reissner-Nordström's field outside. Shrunk to a point at rest it is the classical point charge of Richard Arnowitt, Stanley Deser, and Charles Misner, with a finite mass set by its charge alone. Dropped from infinity with more charge than rest mass it falls through both horizons, turns round inside the inner one, and comes out into another universe. - [Coleman-De Luccia Bubble](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/coleman_de_luccia.json): The spacetime of a false vacuum decaying, found by Sidney Coleman and Frank De Luccia in 1980. A bubble of lower vacuum energy appears by quantum tunnelling, its wall accelerates outward toward the speed of light, and the inside of the bubble is an open universe with no singularity at its start. - [Cremmer-Scherk Spontaneous Compactification](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/cremmer_scherk.json): Minkowski space times a sphere, in six dimensions: the solution of gravity coupled to gauge fields with which Eugene Cremmer and Joël Scherk showed in 1976 that extra dimensions can curl up by the field equations. A magnetic monopole field through the sphere holds it open at one radius, and a cosmological constant of six dimensions keeps the other four dimensions flat. - [Curzon-Chazy Particle](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/curzon_chazy.json): A static, axially symmetric vacuum field whose Weyl potential is Newton's potential of a point mass, found by Jean Chazy in 1924 and H. E. J. Curzon in 1925. Its singularity is a naked ring of infinite circumference, and the curvature there depends on the direction of approach. - [Damour-Solodukhin Wormhole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/damour_solodukhin.json): Schwarzschild's metric with a small constant $\lambda^2$ added to $-g_{tt}$, which Thibault Damour and Sergey Solodukhin wrote down in 2007. The horizon becomes the throat of a static wormhole joining two asymptotically flat regions, and for small $\lambda$ an observer needs a time of order $(r_s/c)\ln(1/\lambda^2)$ to tell it from a black hole. - [Datt-Ruban T-Models](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/datt_ruban_t_models.json): The spherical dust solution that Tolman and Bondi's family leaves out. Every sphere of dust has the same radius $b(t)$, each moment of time is a tube $\mathbb{R} \times S^2$, and the dust is free to differ from shell to shell along it. Cut at a shell and joined to Schwarzschild's vacuum, the tube has the same mass however much dust it holds. - [de Sitter](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/de_sitter.json): The maximally symmetric vacuum solution with constant positive curvature, driven by a positive cosmological constant. It models an exponentially expanding empty universe and describes both inflation and the far future of our cosmos. - [Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger Dilaton Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/dilaton_black_hole.json): The static, spherically symmetric charged black hole of low energy string theory, a solution of Einstein's equations with a Maxwell field and a scalar field, the dilaton, coupled to it. On the plane of time and radius its metric is Schwarzschild's, with one horizon at the Schwarzschild radius for every charge and no inner horizon, and the area of its spheres vanishes at the singularity. - [Schwarzschild Black Hole in a Tidal Field](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/distorted_schwarzschild.json): Schwarzschild's black hole in the quadrupole field of distant matter, a static vacuum solution of Weyl's class that A. G. Doroshkevich, Yakov Zel'dovich, and Igor Novikov gave in 1966, and the simplest of the distorted black holes of Robert Geroch and James Hartle. The tidal field flattens or stretches the horizon and leaves it regular; it grows with distance, so the solution holds between the horizon and the matter that distorts it. - [Double Kerr Solution](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/double_kerr.json): Two Kerr black holes on one axis of symmetry, the stationary vacuum solution Dietrich Kramer and Gernot Neugebauer built in 1980 by two Bäcklund transformations of flat space. The repulsion between the spins does not balance the attraction of the masses, so a strut on the axis between the horizons holds the holes apart. - [The Draining Bathtub](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/draining_bathtub.json): The spacetime that sound travels through in a fluid that swirls as it runs down a drain. Sound cannot stand still against the current inside $r = \sqrt{A^2 + B^2}/c$, an ergoregion, and cannot move outward inside $r = |A|/c$, a horizon, so the vortex is a rotating black hole for sound. It solves no field equation of gravity, and it has been built in a water tank. - [Eguchi-Hanson Space](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/eguchi_hanson.json): A space of four dimensions with no time in it, the gravitational instanton Tohru Eguchi and Andrew Hanson found in 1978: a solution of Einstein's vacuum equations with Riemannian signature and self dual curvature. Space closes on a 2-sphere of radius $a/2$, the bolt, and far away it is flat space with every point identified with its opposite. - [Einstein's Cluster](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/einstein_cluster.json): A static ball of particles on circular orbits in every direction, each held on its circle by the gravity of all the others, with no pressure along the radius. Einstein built it in 1939 to argue that no body can be squeezed inside its Schwarzschild radius, and it now serves as a model for halos of dark matter. - [Einstein Static Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/einstein_static.json): Albert Einstein's cosmology of 1917: dust spread uniformly through a round three sphere of fixed radius and held at rest by a positive cosmological constant. Minkowski, de Sitter, and anti-de Sitter space are each conformal to a region of it. - [Einstein's Static Field of 1912](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/einstein_1912_static.json): Einstein's theory of static gravity from his Prague year: space stays flat and the speed of light varies from place to place, serving as the gravitational potential. Clocks slow near a mass as they do in general relativity, and light bends by half as much. - [Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell Wormhole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/einstein_dirac_maxwell_wormhole.json): A static wormhole held open by an electric field and a pair of massless Dirac fields, the exact solution of Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell theory that Jose Luis Blázquez-Salcedo, Christian Knoll and Eugen Radu found in 2021. Its $g_{tt}$ is the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole's, its charge exceeds its mass, and the electric field runs through the throat from one side to the other. - [Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann Field of Many Bodies](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/eih_many_bodies.json): The gravitational field of $N$ slowly moving bodies to the first order beyond Newton, the order at which the vacuum field equations fix how the bodies move. It is an approximate spacetime with a definite metric, the one the planets and the binary pulsar are timed in. - [Einstein-Rosen Bridge](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/einstein_rosen_bridge.json): The model of a particle that Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen proposed in 1935: two identical sheets of space joined at a smallest sphere, the bridge. The neutral bridge is Schwarzschild's exterior taken twice and joined at $r = r_s$, and the charged bridge is Reissner and Nordström's metric with the sign of the electric term reversed, which needs no mass. - [Einstein-Rosen Waves](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/einstein_rosen_waves.json): Exact vacuum solutions describing gravitational waves with cylindrical wave fronts and a single polarisation, converging on an axis, passing through it and spreading out again. Einstein's equations for them reduce to the flat cylindrical wave equation for one function and a quadrature for a second. - [Elliptic de Sitter Space](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/elliptic_de_sitter.json): De Sitter space with every event identified with the event opposite it on the hyperboloid, $X \sim -X$. One observer's horizon then bounds the whole world and future and past infinity are a single sphere. The spacetime has no closed timelike curves and no global direction of time. - [Ellis-Bronnikov Traversable Wormhole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/ellis_bronnikov.json): A static, spherically symmetric traversable wormhole with zero redshift function, also known as the drainhole metric. - [Erez-Rosen Quadrupole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/erez_rosen.json): Schwarzschild's metric with a mass quadrupole added, a static vacuum field of Weyl's class found by G. Erez and Nathan Rosen in 1959. For every quadrupole parameter $q \neq 0$ a naked curvature singularity stands where the horizon was, which Doroshkevich, Zel'dovich, and Novikov used in 1965 to argue that a collapsing star sheds its quadrupole. - [Exponential Metric of Papapetrou and Yilmaz](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/exponential_metric.json): A static, spherically symmetric metric whose components are exponentials of the Newtonian potential, with no horizon, offered in place of Schwarzschild's and later shown to be a traversable wormhole held open by a scalar field of negative energy. - [Fisher-Janis-Newman-Winicour Scalar Field](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/fisher_jnw.json): The static, spherically symmetric spacetime of a mass that also carries a massless scalar field, found by I. Z. Fisher in 1948 and found again by Allen Janis, Ezra Newman, and Jeffrey Winicour in 1968. For any scalar charge, however small, the sphere where Schwarzschild's horizon would stand has zero area and infinite curvature, and no horizon hides it. - [Freund-Rubin Compactification](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/freund_rubin.json): Anti-de Sitter space of four dimensions times a 7-sphere of twice its radius, a solution of supergravity in eleven dimensions. A field with four indices fills the four large dimensions evenly, and Peter Freund and Mark Rubin found in 1980 that it splits the eleven into four and seven of its own accord. In 1993 Gary Gibbons and Paul Townsend found it again down the throat of the membrane, and Juan Maldacena conjectured that the throat is dual to a conformal field theory. - [Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker Expanding Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/frw.json): The Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric describing a homogeneous, isotropic expanding universe. - [Garfinkle-Vachaspati Travelling Wave on a Cosmic String](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/string_wave.json): A straight cosmic string carrying a wave of arbitrary shape that runs along it at the speed of light, together with the exact gravitational field of the wave. The geometry is a pp-wave whose transverse plane is the string's cone, curved wherever the wave passes while every scalar built from its curvature vanishes. - [Global Monopole and Letelier's Cloud of Strings](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/global_monopole.json): The static, spherically symmetric field of a global monopole, a hedgehog of three scalar fields that forms where a global O(3) symmetry breaks, and of Letelier's cloud of strings running out from a centre. Every sphere about the centre misses the same fraction of its solid angle, so light passing it is bent through one angle whatever its impact parameter, and with a mass at the centre it holds a black hole. - [Gödel Rotating Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/godel.json): An exact solution of Einstein's field equations describing a rotating dust universe with closed timelike curves. - [Gott Time Machine](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/gott_time_machine.json): J. Richard Gott's exact solution of 1991: two straight, parallel cosmic strings passing one another at high speed, flat everywhere off the strings. When each string moves with $\gamma\sin\alpha > 1$, where $2\alpha = 8\pi G\mu/c^2$ is its deficit angle, closed timelike curves circle the pair. - [Gott and Li's Self-Creating Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/self_creating_universe.json): De Sitter space with each event identified with its images under a boost, proposed by J. Richard Gott and Li-Xin Li in 1998. It begins in a region of closed timelike curves of finite spacetime volume, with no earliest event, and a Cauchy horizon separates that region from an inflating universe in which nothing returns to its own past. - [Gowdy Cosmologies](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/gowdy.json): Closed vacuum universes holding gravitational waves that travel along one direction, with two commuting spacelike Killing vectors and space $T^3$, $S^3$, $S^2 \times S^1$, or a space covered by one of them. Einstein's equations for them reduce to two coupled wave equations in one space dimension and a quadrature, and near the singularity each point of space approaches a Kasner universe of its own. - [Mazur-Mottola Gravastar](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/gravastar.json): A star with no horizon and no singularity that passes for a black hole from outside, proposed by Pawel Mazur and Emil Mottola in 2001. A ball of de Sitter space, a vacuum with $p = -\rho$, fills the inside of a thin shell at $R > r_s$, and Schwarzschild's vacuum lies outside it, the three layers Matt Visser and David Wiltshire reduced it to. - [Gravitational Instantons](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/gravitational_instantons.json): Spaces of four dimensions with no time in them, the solutions of Einstein's equations with Riemannian signature that Stephen Hawking, Gary Gibbons, Don Page, and Christopher Pope found in 1977 and 1978. The first is Schwarzschild's black hole in imaginary time, which closes smoothly on its horizon only if that time is a circle of length $4\pi r_s$, the inverse of Hawking's temperature. The others are the two Taub-NUT instantons, the spaces with many centres, the complex projective plane, and Page's space. - [Belinski-Zakharov Gravitational Solitons](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/belinski_zakharov.json): Exact vacuum solutions made by the inverse scattering method of Vladimir Belinski and Vladimir Zakharov, which adds solitons to a known solution by algebra alone. Their wave of two solitons on a Kasner universe that expands alike in two directions is two pulses of gravitational wave, which leave the singularity as one and run apart along the light cone. - [Hartle-Thorne Slowly Rotating Star](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/hartle_thorne.json): The gravitational field outside a slowly rotating star, through second order in its spin: Schwarzschild's exterior, the dragging of inertial frames, and a quadrupole moment set by the star's interior. Far from the star it is the field of Lense and Thirring, whose frame dragging Gravity Probe B measured around the Earth. - [Hayward Regular Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/hayward.json): A black hole with two horizons and a regular centre, Schwarzschild's metric far away and de Sitter space at the core. Sean Hayward wrote it down in 2006 and let its mass change in time, so that a region of trapped surfaces forms, evaporates, and leaves neither a singularity nor an event horizon. - [Hiscock's Evaporating Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/hiscock.json): A black hole that forms and then radiates itself away, built by William Hiscock in 1981 from Vaidya's metric. Inside a surface just outside the apparent horizon negative energy falls in and lowers the mass, and outside it positive energy carries the same mass off to infinity. The event horizon ends after a finite time, and the last point of the singularity is naked. - [Hotta-Tanaka Shock Wave](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/hotta_tanaka.json): The gravitational field of two massless particles in de Sitter space, the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole boosted to the speed of light with its energy held fixed. Spacetime is de Sitter on either side of a single null cone, a cosmological horizon, which carries an impulsive gravitational wave on a sphere of constant area with one particle at each pole. - [Interstellar's Wormhole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/interstellar_wormhole.json): The wormhole Oliver James, Eugénie von Tunzelmann, Paul Franklin, and Kip Thorne designed for Christopher Nolan's film Interstellar of 2014, which they call the Dneg wormhole after the effects studio Double Negative. A cylinder of length $2a$, every sphere along it of radius $\rho$, joins two flat spaces, each through a mouth that flares out over a length set by $M$, and clocks everywhere keep the same time, $g_{tt} = -1$. - [Israel's Collapsing Shell of Dust](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/israel_shell.json): A thin spherical shell of dust falling under its own weight, with flat spacetime inside it and Schwarzschild's vacuum outside. Werner Israel solved its motion in 1966 with the junction conditions he wrote for a surface that carries matter. The event horizon forms at the centre of the flat interior before the shell arrives. - [Israel-Wilson-Perjés Spinning Charged Sources](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/israel_wilson_perjes.json): Majumdar and Papapetrou's balanced charges set spinning: the stationary electrovacuum fields built from a complex solution of Laplace's equation, found by Zoltán Perjés in 1971 and by Werner Israel and Gordon Wilson in 1972. Every source carries a charge equal to its mass, and the family holds Kerr and Newman's spinning body with that charge, a naked singularity, and a charged NUT space. - [Jackiw-Teitelboim Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/jackiw_teitelboim_black_hole.json): A black hole in two spacetime dimensions, in the gravity of Teitelboim and Jackiw, where a scalar field, the dilaton, holds the curvature at $R = -2/L^2$. Every solution is a piece of anti-de Sitter space of two dimensions, and the dilaton tells the black hole from empty space: its value on the horizon is the entropy. The same gravity governs the throat of a nearly extreme charged black hole, and in it the quantum mechanics of a black hole can be solved exactly. - [Kaluza-Klein Black Holes](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kaluza_klein_black_hole.json): The charged black holes of gravity in five dimensions with the fifth dimension a small circle, vacuum solutions that four dimensions see as black holes with an electric charge, a magnetic charge, or both, and a scalar field. The electric hole is Schwarzschild's black string set moving around the circle, and Gary Gibbons and David Wiltshire classified the family in 1986. - [Kaluza-Klein Monopole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kaluza_klein_monopole.json): A static vacuum solution of gravity in five dimensions, four of space and one of time, that Rafael Sorkin, and David Gross and Malcolm Perry, found in 1983: Euclidean Taub-NUT space with a time added. The fifth dimension is a circle that shrinks smoothly to a point at the centre, and seen from four dimensions the twist of that circle is the field of a magnetic monopole. - [Kantowski-Sachs Cosmologies](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kantowski_sachs.json): The spatially homogeneous, anisotropic cosmologies outside Bianchi's classification. Every moment of time is a cylinder $\mathbb{R} \times S^2$, or $S^1 \times S^2$, whose length and whose spheres evolve separately, and the vacuum member is the region inside the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole. - [Kasner Anisotropic Vacuum Cosmology](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kasner.json): An anisotropic vacuum cosmology that expands along some axes while contracting along another, with expansion exponents constrained by two algebraic relations. It is a key building block of the chaotic approach to cosmological singularities. - [Kasner Universe with a Magnetic Field](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kasner_magnetic.json): Kasner's anisotropic universe threaded by a uniform magnetic field along one axis, with no matter in it. The tension of the field pulls that axis to nothing at both ends of time, and the universe passes from one Kasner vacuum at early times to another at late times. - [Kasner Universe with a Scalar Field](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kasner_scalar.json): Kasner's anisotropic universe filled with a massless scalar field, which is also a fluid whose pressure equals its energy density. The field loosens Kasner's second condition, so all three axes can shrink together toward the singularity, and the oscillations of the vacuum come to a stop. - [Kastor-Traschen Colliding Black Holes](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kastor_traschen.json): Any number of charged black holes in a universe with a positive cosmological constant, the exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations David Kastor and Jennie Traschen found in 1993. Each hole has a charge equal to its mass, and the holes ride the expansion or the contraction of the universe, so holes that fall together merge. - [Kerr Rotating Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kerr.json): The exact vacuum solution for a rotating, uncharged black hole, characterized by mass and angular momentum. It features an ergosphere, frame dragging, and a ring singularity, and describes essentially all astrophysical black holes. - [Kerr Black Holes with Scalar Hair](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kerr_scalar_hair.json): A rotating black hole wrapped in a cloud of massive complex scalar field that neither falls in nor escapes, found by Carlos Herdeiro and Eugen Radu in 2014. The field turns at $m$ times the horizon's angular velocity, $\omega = m\Omega_H$, so the metric stays stationary and axisymmetric while the field changes in time and in angle. The family runs from Kerr's black holes to spinning boson stars, and its metric is known only numerically. - [Kerr-Bertotti-Robinson Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kerr_bertotti_robinson.json): Kerr's rotating black hole in a magnetic field that points along its axis of rotation and is uniform far away, the exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations that Jiří Podolský and Hryhorii Ovcharenko found in 2025. It is of Petrov type D, it is Kerr's metric with the field switched off and Bertotti and Robinson's universe with the mass taken away, and the spinning hole carries an electric charge. - [Kerr-de Sitter and Kerr-anti-de Sitter Black Holes](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kerr_de_sitter.json): The rotating black hole in a universe with a cosmological constant of either sign, which Brandon Carter found in 1968 among the spacetimes whose geodesic equations separate. With $\Lambda > 0$ an inner horizon, an event horizon, and a cosmological horizon surround the ring singularity, and with $\Lambda < 0$ its boundary is a rotating Einstein universe. - [Kerr Black Hole in a Magnetic Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kerr_melvin.json): Kerr's rotating black hole inside Melvin's magnetic universe, the exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations that Frederick Ernst and Walter Wild built in 1976 by a Harrison transformation of Kerr's metric. The hole carries the charge $Q = 2amB$ that Robert Wald found for a test field in 1974, and its ergoregion runs out to infinity in a tube beside the axis. - [Kerr-Newman Charged Rotating Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kerr_newman.json): The most general stationary black hole solution, carrying mass, angular momentum, and electric charge. It unifies the Kerr and Reissner-Nordström metrics into a single electrovacuum spacetime. - [Kerr-Taub-NUT Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kerr_taub_nut.json): Kerr's rotating black hole with a NUT parameter, the vacuum solution Marek Demiański and Ezra Newman found in 1966. It is Kerr's metric at $l = 0$ and the Taub-NUT metric at $a = 0$, it carries Misner strings along its axis, and for $|l| > |a|$ it has no curvature singularity. - [Khan-Penrose Colliding Plane Waves](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/khan_penrose.json): Two impulsive plane gravitational waves colliding head on in flat space. Each focuses the other, and the vacuum where both have passed ends in a spacelike curvature singularity. - [Kiselev Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kiselev.json): Schwarzschild's black hole with one more term in its metric, a power of the radius that stands for matter around the hole whose pressure, averaged over directions, is a fixed multiple of its energy density. Valery Kiselev wrote it down in 2003 as a black hole surrounded by quintessence, and Matt Visser showed in 2020 that the matter is neither a perfect fluid nor quintessence. - [Kodama's General Relativistic Kink](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kodama_kink.json): A static wormhole held open by a ghost scalar field with a quartic potential, found numerically by Takeshi Kodama in 1978. The field sits in one vacuum far out on one side of the throat and in the other vacuum far out on the other side, so the throat carries a kink of the $\lambda\phi^4$ model. Both sides are asymptotically flat, the mass is positive, and there is neither a horizon nor a singularity. - [Kopczyński-Trautman Universe With Torsion](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kopczynski_trautman.json): A flat universe of dust whose particles all spin about one axis, in the Einstein-Cartan theory, where the spin of matter gives spacetime torsion as its energy gives it curvature. The spins repel at high density, so the universe contracts to a least size, turns round, and expands, with no singularity. W. Kopczyński found the first such universes in 1972 and 1973, and Andrzej Trautman argued from them in 1973 that spin and torsion may avert gravitational singularities. - [Krasnikov Tube](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/krasnikov.json): A tube of modified spacetime laid down along the path of an outbound ship, flat inside but with its light cones tipped so far open that the trip home can be superluminal. The outbound leg is no faster than light, yet the round trip can be made arbitrarily short by clocks left at home, and holding the tube open takes negative energy density. - [Kundt Waves](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/kundt_waves.json): Exact gravitational waves on plane fronts whose rays turn from one front to the next. In flat space the fronts are half planes rolling round a cylinder that expands at the speed of light, and the cylinder is a singularity that no curvature scalar shows. - [Lanczos-van Stockum Rotating Dust Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/stockum_dust.json): An exact solution to the Einstein field equations describing an infinite rotating cylinder of pressureless dust, exhibiting closed timelike curves beyond a critical radius. - [Lentz Positive-Energy Warp Drive](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/lentz.json): A superluminal soliton whose energy density is positive everywhere for the observers riding with it, sourced by a conducting plasma and electromagnetic fields. Jessica Santiago, Sebastian Schuster, and Matt Visser later showed that other observers still see the energy conditions fail. - [Levi-Civita Static Cylinder](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/levi_civita.json): The static vacuum field with cylindrical symmetry, the field outside an infinitely long straight line of mass, which Tullio Levi-Civita found in 1919. It has two parameters, a mass per unit length and an angular deficit about the axis, and it is flat with no mass and again where the mass parameter is one half. - [Lewis Rotating Cylinder](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/lewis.json): The stationary vacuum fields with cylindrical symmetry, the space outside an infinitely long rotating cylinder, which Thomas Lewis wrote down in 1932. With real constants the field is locally Levi-Civita's static one and the rotation shows only on a trip round the axis; with an imaginary exponent it is static nowhere. Both kinds hold the vacuum outside van Stockum's cylinder of dust. - [Lifshitz Spacetime](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/lifshitz_spacetime.json): A spacetime whose symmetry rescales time and space by different powers, $t \to \lambda^z t$ while $x \to \lambda x$, written down by Shamit Kachru, Xiao Liu, and Michael Mulligan in 2008 as the gravitational dual of a Lifshitz critical point. At $z = 1$ it is anti-de Sitter space, and for $z > 1$ every curvature scalar is constant while the tidal forces diverge on a null singularity at $r = 0$. - [Lindquist-Wheeler Lattice Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/lindquist_wheeler_lattice.json): A closed universe that holds nothing but $N$ equal masses, one at the centre of each cell of a regular tiling of the three sphere, built by Richard Lindquist and John Wheeler in 1957 from pieces of Schwarzschild's geometry. Fitting the pieces together makes the lattice expand and fall back almost as Friedmann's closed universe of dust does. It is an approximate spacetime, and an early test of whether a universe whose matter comes in lumps expands like a smooth one. - [Maitra's Rotating Dust](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/maitra_dust.json): A stationary, cylindrically symmetric universe of dust that turns faster near its axis than far from it, found by Samaresh C. Maitra in 1966. It has no cosmological constant and no closed timelike curves, and its density falls from $c^2/8\pi Ga^2$ on the axis toward zero far away. - [Majumdar-Papapetrou Extremal Black Holes](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/majumdar_papapetrou.json): Any number of extremal charged black holes at rest, the static electrovacuum solution Sudhansu Datta Majumdar and Achilles Papapetrou found independently in 1947. Between every pair of holes the electric repulsion balances the gravitational attraction exactly, so the holes stay at rest in any arrangement. - [Malament-Hogarth Super-Turing Spacetimes](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/malament_hogarth.json): A spacetime construction containing a worldline of infinite proper length that lies within the past of a single event reachable in finite proper time. It provides a relativistic model for hypercomputation that could complete infinite tasks. - [Maldacena-Qi Eternal Traversable Wormhole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/eternal_traversable_wormhole.json): A wormhole in two spacetime dimensions that stays open for ever. It is anti-de Sitter space of two dimensions in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, with its two boundaries coupled to each other: the coupling makes negative energy in the quantum fields between them, which holds the dilaton static, and light crosses from one boundary to the other. Two coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models share its gravitational dynamics. - [Many Black Holes and Wormholes in Three Dimensions](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/btz_multi_holes_wormholes.json): Anti-de Sitter space of three dimensions cut along timelike surfaces and glued back together, which makes any number of black holes joined behind their horizons, or one black hole with a wormhole of any genus inside it. Every exterior is that of a Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole, and the whole spacetime is drawn on Poincaré's disc. - [Mass Inflation Inside a Charged Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/mass_inflation.json): The inside of a charged black hole crossed by two streams of radiation, one falling in and one running outward. Eric Poisson and Werner Israel found in 1989 that the mass function then grows without limit at the inner horizon, which turns the Cauchy horizon of the Reissner-Nordström solution into a null curvature singularity, and Amos Ori gave the exact solution in 1991. - [Maximally Supersymmetric Plane Wave](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/maximally_supersymmetric_plane_wave.json): A plane wave of ten dimensions, held up by the 5-form field of type IIB supergravity, that keeps all 32 of the theory's supersymmetries. It pulls every free particle toward its axis with one period in all eight directions across it. Matthias Blau, José Figueroa-O'Farrill, Christopher Hull, and George Papadopoulos found it in 2001, and it is the geometry near a light ray circling the sphere of anti-de Sitter space times a 5-sphere. - [McVittie Mass in an Expanding Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/mcvittie.json): A point mass in a spatially flat expanding universe, the solution George McVittie found in 1933 for a perfect fluid at rest about the mass. Where a positive cosmological constant drives the late expansion, it holds a black hole whose horizon approaches that of Schwarzschild-de Sitter. - [Melvin Magnetic Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/melvin.json): A static bundle of parallel magnetic field lines held together by the gravity of the field's own energy, with no matter anywhere, the solution William Bonnor found in 1954 and Mael Melvin found again in 1964. Frederick Ernst placed a Schwarzschild black hole inside it in 1976. - [Milne Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/milne.json): Edward Arthur Milne's expanding universe of 1932: test particles flying apart from one event of flat spacetime with every speed below that of light. In comoving coordinates it is the empty open Friedmann universe, with scale factor $ct$ and hyperbolic space at each moment. - [Minkowski Flat Spacetime](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/minkowski.json): The flat spacetime of special relativity. No curvature, no gravity. - [Misner Space](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/misner.json): Minkowski space identified under a boost, flat everywhere. A contracting universe whose closed direction turns from space into time across a horizon of closed null geodesics, with closed timelike curves through every event beyond it. - [Misner and Brill-Lindquist Initial Data for Two Black Holes](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/misner_brill_lindquist.json): One moment of a spacetime with two black holes at rest in it, the initial data Charles Misner found in 1960 and Dieter Brill and Richard Lindquist in 1963. It is a single slice of space, three dimensions with no time, that satisfies Einstein's constraint equations for a moment at which nothing moves. Each hole is a throat that opens into another sheet of space, and what the holes do afterwards is known from computer simulations. - [Misner-Zapolsky Star of Infinite Central Density](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/misner_zapolsky.json): A static sphere of fluid as stiff as light, $p = \rho c^2/3$, whose density is infinite at the centre and falls as $1/r^2$. Tolman and Oppenheimer and Volkoff found it in 1939, and it is the core that models of neutron stars approach as their central density grows without limit. - [Mixmaster Chaotic Cosmology](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/mixmaster.json): A spatially homogeneous Bianchi type IX cosmology whose approach to the singularity consists of an infinite, chaotic sequence of Kasner oscillations. It is the prototype of chaotic cosmological dynamics near a singularity. - [Morgan-Morgan Discs](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/morgan_morgan.json): Static thin discs of dust in Weyl's class, found by Thomas Morgan and Lesley Morgan in 1969. Half the dust circles the axis one way and half the other, so a disc has no angular momentum, and the field around it is a static vacuum built on a Newtonian potential. - [Morris-Thorne Traversable Wormhole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/morris_thorne.json): A static, spherically symmetric traversable wormhole engineered to have no horizon and tolerable tidal forces. Keeping its throat open requires exotic matter that violates the energy conditions. - [Morris-Thorne-Yurtsever Wormhole Time Machine](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/wormhole_time_machine.json): A traversable wormhole whose mouths have been put out of step by taking one of them on a round trip at nearly the speed of light, described by Michael Morris, Kip Thorne, and Ulvi Yurtsever in 1988. Once the time shift between the mouths exceeds the light travel time between them, closed timelike curves loop through the throat, to the future of a Cauchy horizon whose light rays peel off one closed null geodesic. - [The Moving Mirror of Fulling and Davies](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/moving_mirror.json): Flat spacetime in two dimensions that ends at a perfectly reflecting mirror on a chosen world line, with a massless quantum field to its right. A mirror that accelerates radiates, and one whose world line approaches a light ray sends out a steady thermal flux, Hawking's radiation with no curvature anywhere. - [Myers-Perry Rotating Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/myers_perry.json): The rotating black hole in $D > 4$ spacetime dimensions, the vacuum solution Robert Myers and Malcolm Perry gave in 1986, with a separate spin in each independent plane of rotation. In five dimensions it shares its mass and spin with black rings, and from six dimensions up a black hole turning in one plane keeps its horizon at every spin. - [Nariai Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/nariai.json): A vacuum solution with a positive cosmological constant, geometrically the product of a two dimensional de Sitter space and a sphere of the same radius (dS₂ × S²). It is the limit of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole as its horizon meets the cosmological horizon, the largest black hole a de Sitter universe can hold. - [Natário Warp Drive](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/natario.json): A warp bubble metric in which space flows around a stationary ship with no expansion or contraction anywhere, so that volume elements are carried along unchanged. It shows that the expansion of space is inessential to warp travel, and that the requirement of negative energy density survives its removal. - [Near-Horizon Extreme Kerr Geometry](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/near_horizon_extreme_kerr.json): The vacuum geometry left when one looks only at the region just outside the horizon of a Kerr black hole spinning as fast as it can, known as NHEK. At every polar angle it is a circle fibred over anti-de Sitter space of two dimensions, it has no singularity and no asymptotically flat region, and the Kerr/CFT correspondence is built on it. - [Neugebauer-Meinel Disc of Dust](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/neugebauer_meinel.json): A disc of dust turning rigidly about its axis and held up by rotation alone, the exact solution of Einstein's equations, inside and out, that Gernot Neugebauer and Reinhard Meinel found between 1993 and 1995. Its one parameter runs from the Maclaurin disc of Newton's theory to a limit where the field outside the disc is the extreme Kerr black hole's. - [Nordström's Scalar Theory of Gravity](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/nordstrom_scalar.json): Gravity as one scalar field on flat spacetime, which Einstein and Fokker rewrote as a conformally flat spacetime whose curvature scalar is fixed by the trace of the stress-energy tensor of matter. Light keeps the cones of Minkowski space while clocks and rods change from place to place. - [Oppenheimer-Snyder Gravitational Collapse](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/oppenheimer_snyder.json): The first dynamical model of gravitational collapse, matching a collapsing homogeneous dust sphere to an exterior Schwarzschild vacuum. It showed how a star can form a black hole in finite proper time. - [Ori Time Machine](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/ori_time_machine.json): Amos Ori's vacuum time machine core of 2005: a plane fronted gravitational wave closed up along one direction, whose circles turn from spacelike to timelike. With $f = a(x^2 - y^2)/2$ causality first fails on a single closed null geodesic, and closed timelike curves fill the region beyond it. - [Parametrised Post-Newtonian Metric](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/ppn_metric.json): The weak gravitational field of a slowly moving body with a number in front of every term, so that each metric theory of gravity is a set of numbers and each experiment in the solar system measures a combination of them. General relativity is the point $\beta = \gamma = 1$, where the metric is Schwarzschild's far from the horizon. - [Penrose's Spherical Impulsive Wave](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/penrose_impulsive_wave.json): Flat spacetime cut along the future light cone of one event and joined again with a warp, which leaves a spherical gravitational wave one instant thick expanding at the speed of light. With the warp of a cosmic string it is the wave a string sends out when it snaps, with the cone of the string ahead of the wave and plain flat space behind it. - [Perturbed Friedmann Universe in Bardeen's Potentials](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/bardeen_perturbations.json): A Friedmann universe with two small gravitational potentials laid over it, kept to first order in them. It is the spacetime in which the fluctuations of the microwave background and the growth of structure are calculated, and in the longitudinal gauge its two potentials are Bardeen's gauge invariants. - [Petrov Homogeneous Vacuum](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/petrov_homogeneous.json): An empty spacetime that is curved and still the same at every event: four symmetries carry any event to any other in exactly one way, and no other vacuum without a cosmological constant has such a group. Its light cones turn steadily as one walks along one direction, and it is the field outside a cylinder of dust that spins with the circle round its surface a path of light. - [Kinnersley Photon Rocket](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/photon_rocket.json): The field of a point mass that accelerates by shining light unevenly, found by William Kinnersley in 1969. Its mass and its acceleration are arbitrary functions of retarded time, the light is null dust that streams out brightest behind it, and no gravitational waves reach infinity. - [Plebański-Hacyan Spacetimes and Anti-Nariai](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/plebanski_hacyan.json): The products of two surfaces of constant curvature that solve the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a cosmological constant beside Nariai's and Bertotti and Robinson's: a flat plane of time and space times a sphere, anti-de Sitter space of two dimensions times a flat plane, and the anti-Nariai universe, anti-de Sitter space of two dimensions times a hyperbolic plane. The first two hold a uniform electromagnetic field whose energy density matches the cosmological constant, and anti-Nariai is a vacuum. - [Poincaré Dodecahedral Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/poincare_dodecahedral.json): A closed Friedmann universe whose space is a dodecahedron with each face glued to the face opposite it after a tenth of a turn, the 3-sphere divided by the binary icosahedral group. Every local measurement agrees with Friedmann's, and space is 120 times smaller than the 3-sphere of the same curvature. Jean-Pierre Luminet, Jeffrey R. Weeks, Alain Riazuelo, Roland Lehoucq, and Jean-Philippe Uzan proposed it in 2003 for the weak correlations of the microwave background at wide angles. - [Point Particles in Three Dimensions](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/point_particle_2plus1.json): Gravity with one dimension of space removed, where a mass makes no field around itself. Spacetime is flat everywhere off a particle's world line, and space around the particle is a cone, missing a wedge whose angle is set by the mass. - [pp-wave Plane Gravitational Waves](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/pp_wave.json): A class of exact solutions describing gravitational waves with plane fronts and parallel rays. They model the radiation field of rapidly moving sources and exact gravitational wave geometries. - [Quantum BTZ Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/quantum_btz.json): The black hole of three dimensions with the backreaction of strongly coupled quantum fields included exactly, read off a black hole on a brane in anti-de Sitter space of four dimensions. One more term in the metric of Bañados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli, $-\ell F/r$, puts a curvature singularity at its centre and hides the conical singularities of negative mass behind horizons. - [Quantum Oppenheimer-Snyder Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/quantum_oppenheimer_snyder.json): Oppenheimer and Snyder's ball of dust with the bounce of loop quantum cosmology inside it, which Jerzy Lewandowski, Yongge Ma, Jinsong Yang, and Cong Zhang built in 2023. The dust falls, stops at a finite density, and comes back out, and the junction conditions fix the vacuum outside: Schwarzschild's metric with one more term, with two horizons above a least mass and none below it. - [Randall-Sundrum Braneworld](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/randall_sundrum.json): A flat wall with three dimensions of space in anti-de Sitter space of five dimensions, found by Lisa Randall and Raman Sundrum in 1999. Every length along the wall's directions shrinks as $e^{-k|y|}$ with the distance $y$ from it, which between two walls turns the Planck scale into the weak scale, and with one wall keeps gravity four dimensional beside a fifth dimension of infinite size. - [Reissner-Nordström Charged Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/rn_metric.json): The unique static, spherically symmetric vacuum solution to the Einstein-Maxwell equations describing the spacetime exterior to a charged mass that does not rotate. - [Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/reissner_nordstrom_ads.json): A charged black hole in anti-de Sitter space, the static, spherically symmetric solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant. It has an inner horizon and an event horizon inside a timelike boundary at infinity, and at fixed charge its small and large black holes behave as the liquid and the gas of a van der Waals fluid do. - [Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/reissner_nordstrom_de_sitter.json): A charged black hole in a universe with a positive cosmological constant, the static, spherically symmetric solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. It has an inner horizon, a black hole horizon, and a cosmological horizon, and when its charge equals its mass the last two radiate at the same temperature. - [Roberts Solution and Critical Collapse](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/roberts.json): A massless scalar field falling in from infinity onto empty space, an exact solution of Einstein's equations that Mark Roberts found as a counterexample to cosmic censorship. It looks the same at every scale, and one number $p$ decides how it ends: for $p < 1$ the field passes through the centre and leaves flat space behind, for $p > 1$ it makes a black hole, and at $p = 1$ it leaves a null singularity. - [Robinson-Trautman Radiating Spacetimes](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/robinson_trautman.json): The vacuum field of an isolated body sending out gravitational waves on expanding wave fronts, found by Ivor Robinson and Andrzej Trautman in 1960. From smooth initial data the fronts grow round as the waves leave, and the spacetime settles down to the Schwarzschild black hole. - [RP³ Geon](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/rp3_geon.json): Schwarzschild's black hole with its second exterior folded onto the first: the Kruskal events $(T, X, \theta, \phi)$ and $(T, -X, \pi - \theta, \phi + \pi)$ are one event. Outside the horizon it is Schwarzschild's spacetime, and behind it the black hole and the white hole are each half of Kruskal's. Space at the moment of time symmetry is real projective space with a point removed, and the spacetime is orientable in time and in space. - [Schrödinger Spacetime](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/schrodinger_spacetime.json): Anti-de Sitter space with one term added to its metric, which cuts its symmetries down to those of the free Schrödinger equation: Galilean boosts, a scaling under which time goes as the square of length, and a conserved mass. Dam Thanh Son, and Koushik Balasubramanian and John McGreevy, proposed it in 2008 as the gravitational dual of cold atoms at unitarity. Every event on a surface of constant time has the same future. - [Schwarzschild Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/schwarzschild.json): The unique spherically symmetric vacuum solution of the Einstein field equations, describing the spacetime outside a static, uncharged mass that does not rotate. - [Schwarzschild's stellar interior metric](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/interior_schwarzschild.json): The unique static, spherically symmetric solution for an incompressible perfect fluid ball of uniform density, with radius $R$ and Schwarzschild radius $r_s$. - [Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/schwarzschild_ads.json): A black hole in anti-de Sitter space, the static, spherically symmetric vacuum solution with a negative cosmological constant. A small one is unstable and evaporates or grows, and a large one stays in stable equilibrium with thermal radiation, as Stephen Hawking and Don Page showed in 1983. - [Schwarzschild-de Sitter Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/schwarzschild_de_sitter.json): A black hole in a universe with a positive cosmological constant, the static, spherically symmetric vacuum solution Friedrich Kottler found in 1918. A black hole horizon and a cosmological horizon enclose a static region between them, and the two radiate at different temperatures. - [Schwarzschild-Tangherlini Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/tangherlini.json): The Schwarzschild black hole in $D \ge 4$ spacetime dimensions, the static vacuum solution with hyperspherical symmetry that Frank Tangherlini found in 1963. Its metric function is $1 - (r_h/r)^{D-3}$, and for $D > 4$ every circular orbit of a massive particle around it is unstable. - [Semiclosed World, the Bag of Gold](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/semiclosed_world.json): More than half of a closed Friedmann universe of dust joined to Schwarzschild's exterior behind its throat. The mass seen from outside falls as the dust within grows, and reaches zero as the universe closes. - [Senovilla Universe With No Singularity](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/senovilla.json): A universe filled with radiation and arranged around an axis, which contracts, is densest at one moment, and expands again, with no big bang and no singularity anywhere, found by José Senovilla in 1990. It satisfies the energy conditions and is globally hyperbolic, and the singularity theorems leave it alone because it has no closed trapped surface and its expansion falls to zero far from the axis. - [Shenker-Stanford Shock Wave in the BTZ Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/btz_shock_wave.json): The eternal black hole of Bañados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli with a shock wave lying on its horizon, the field of a few quanta thrown in from one side long ago. The two halves of the black hole are joined along the horizon with a shift $\alpha$ that grows exponentially with the time since the quanta were let go, so the wormhole between the two outsides grows longer. It is the geometry of the butterfly effect in holography. - [Siklos Waves and the Kaigorodov Spacetime](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/siklos.json): Exact gravitational waves crossing anti-de Sitter space: a pp-wave multiplied by anti-de Sitter's conformal factor, with fronts that are hyperbolic planes. The simplest, Kaigorodov's spacetime, is homogeneous, and its singularity shows in no curvature scalar. - [Simpson-Visser Black Bounce](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/simpson_visser.json): Schwarzschild's metric with $\sqrt{r^2 + a^2}$ written for the areal radius, which Alex Simpson and Matt Visser proposed in 2019. One length $a$ carries it from Schwarzschild's black hole through a regular black hole, whose inside bounces into another universe, and a one way wormhole to a traversable wormhole. - [Small Universes](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/small_universes.json): A Friedmann universe whose space is a torus or another quotient of flat or hyperbolic space, made by declaring points a fixed step apart to be one point. At each point its geometry is Friedmann's, its volume can be finite with no curvature to close it, and an observer sees each galaxy many times over, at a different age each time. George Ellis reviewed such universes in 1971, and with G. Schreiber called them small universes in 1986. - [Som-Raychaudhuri Rotating Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/som_raychaudhuri.json): A homogeneous universe of charged dust in rigid rotation, held in a uniform magnetic field along the axis of rotation. Its line element is the shortest of Gödel's kind, and the circles about any world line of the dust are closed timelike curves beyond $r = c/\Omega$. - [Spinning Cosmic String](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/spinning_string.json): The spacetime around an infinitely thin, straight string that carries angular momentum as well as mass, flat everywhere off the string. The mass removes a wedge from every plane the string crosses, the spin shifts time by $8\pi GJ/c^4$ on each circuit of the string, and within $r = 4GJ/(c^3 - 4G\mu c)$ the circles around it are closed timelike curves. - [Sultana-Dyer Black Hole in an Expanding Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/sultana_dyer.json): A black hole in the Einstein-de Sitter universe, Schwarzschild's metric multiplied by the square of the scale factor of a flat universe of dust, which Joseph Sultana and Charles Dyer found in 2005. Its event horizon grows with the universe, and its matter is a dust and a null dust that fall into the hole. - [Flat Space with Supertranslation Hair](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/supertranslation_hair.json): Minkowski space in the coordinates of a supertranslation, written in closed form by Geoffrey Compère and Jiang Long in 2016. Every component of the Riemann tensor vanishes, and each function on the sphere of directions gives a different vacuum, between which a burst of gravitational waves carries space. - [Black Hole in a Swirling Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/swirling_universe_black_hole.json): Schwarzschild's black hole inside a vacuum universe whose frame dragging turns one way above its equatorial plane and the other way below it, the exact solution Marco Astorino, Riccardo Martelli and Adriano Viganò made in 2022 with a transformation of Ernst's equation. The hole keeps Schwarzschild's horizon, area and temperature, and two ergoregions run out along the axis to infinity. - [Szekeres Inhomogeneous Dust Cosmologies](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/szekeres.json): The dust cosmologies Peter Szekeres found in 1975, which in general have no Killing vector. Their shells of matter are spheres, planes, or pseudospheres that are not concentric, each evolving as a shell of the Tolman-Bondi model does, so the density carries a dipole that changes from shell to shell. - [Taub-Newman-Unti-Tamburino Vacuum Spacetime](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/taub_nut.json): A vacuum solution with unusual topology and a "gravitomagnetic" NUT parameter, often called a counterexample to many GR conjectures. It exhibits closed timelike curves and a fibered structure that is far from trivial. - [Teo Rotating Traversable Wormhole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/teo_wormhole.json): Edward Teo's rotating traversable wormhole of 1998, the stationary, axially symmetric generalisation of the Morris-Thorne wormhole, in the example he worked out. Exotic matter still holds its throat open, some travellers fall through without meeting any, and a fast enough spin wraps the equator of the throat in an ergoregion. - [Black Holes of String Theory with Three and Four Charges](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/string_bh_three_four_charges.json): The black holes of string theory whose entropy was first counted from their microscopic states: in five dimensions with three charges, Strominger and Vafa's hole and the family of Horowitz, Maldacena, and Strominger around it, and in four dimensions with four charges, the hole of Cvetič and Youm. Each charge enters the metric through a harmonic function of its own, and the horizon of the extreme hole has an area only when every charge is present. - [Three-Brane and Its Throat](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/three_brane_throat.json): A flat sheet of three dimensions in a spacetime of ten, carrying the charge of the 5-form field of type IIB supergravity. Far from the sheet spacetime is flat, and close to it a throat of infinite length opens, anti-de Sitter space of five dimensions times a sphere of five, both of one radius. Juan Maldacena took the limit that keeps the throat alone in 1997 and conjectured that string theory there is a gauge theory in four dimensions. - [Tilted Universes and the Whimper](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/tilted_universes.json): Homogeneous universes whose matter drifts through the surfaces of homogeneity, so that an observer riding with it sees a lopsided sky. In the simplest of them, Farnsworth's dust of 1967, those surfaces turn from spacelike to timelike across a Cauchy horizon, and the light rays along the horizon end where the density and the curvature are finite: a whimper, as George Ellis and A. R. King named it in 1974. - [Tippett-Tsang Time Machine](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/tippett_tsang.json): A bubble of curved spacetime whose centre runs round a circle in the plane of $t$ and $x$, proposed by Benjamin Tippett and David Tsang in a preprint of 2013 and a paper of 2017. Inside the bubble spacetime is flat in Rindler's form with an angle for its time, so the world line of a rider who keeps accelerating closes on itself. Outside is Minkowski space, and the wall between the two violates the null energy condition, carries naked singularities, and leaves the spacetime with no consistent arrow of time. - [Tolman's Fluid Sphere, Solution VII](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/tolman_vii.json): A static star of perfect fluid whose density falls as the square of the radius, $\rho = \rho_c(1 - r^2/R^2)$ where the surface is empty. It is the seventh of the eight solutions Richard Tolman wrote down in 1939, and the density inside a neutron star follows it closely. - [Tolman-Bondi Inhomogeneous Dust Universe](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/tolman_bondi.json): A spherically symmetric but inhomogeneous dust solution generalizing FLRW to a density and an expansion that vary with position. It is widely used to model voids, structure formation, and inhomogeneous cosmologies. - [Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff Relativistic Star](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/tov.json): The hydrostatic equilibrium equations for a static, spherically symmetric relativistic star of perfect fluid. They set the maximum mass of neutron stars before collapse to a black hole. - [Topological Black Holes in Anti-de Sitter Space](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/topological_black_hole.json): Black holes in anti-de Sitter space whose horizons are planes, cylinders, tori, or closed surfaces of genus two or more, the static vacuum solutions with a negative cosmological constant over a surface of constant curvature. The flat one is the black brane of holography, and the hyperbolic one is a black hole even with no mass or a negative one. - [Topological Star](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/topological_star.json): A smooth spacetime of five dimensions with no horizon and no singularity, which seen from four dimensions has the mass and the magnetic charge of a black hole. Where the horizon would be, the circle of the fifth dimension shrinks to a point and space ends on a bubble held open by magnetic flux. Ibrahima Bah and Pierre Heidmann proposed it in 2021 as the simplest topological star, on a line element that also describes a black string with the same bubble behind its horizon. - [The Universe from Nothing](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/universe_from_nothing.json): Half of a 4-sphere joined at its equator to the waist of de Sitter's closed universe: the geometry of Alexander Vilenkin's universe created by tunnelling from nothing (1982) and of the no-boundary proposal of James Hartle and Stephen Hawking (1983). The south pole of the sphere is a point like any other on it, so the universe has no first moment and no edge, and above the equator it inflates. - [Unruh's Acoustic Black Hole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/unruh_acoustic_hole.json): The spacetime that sound travels through in a fluid falling steadily into a point from every side. Inside $r = r_0$ the fluid falls faster than sound, so no sound gets out, and the sphere $r = r_0$ is a horizon that should glow with thermal sound. It solves no field equation of gravity, and its horizon has been made in a Bose-Einstein condensate. - [Vaidya Radiating Star](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/vaidya.json): A dynamical solution describing the spacetime of a radiating or accreting spherical mass with outgoing or ingoing null dust. It models radiating stars and the evaporation or growth of black holes. - [Van Den Broeck Warp Drive](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/van_den_broeck.json): Alcubierre's warp bubble with the space inside it expanded by a large factor, so that a bubble microscopic from outside opens through a narrow neck onto a pocket large enough for a ship. Shrinking the bubble's surface brings the negative energy it needs from far beyond the mass of the visible universe down to a few solar masses. - [Vilenkin-Gott Cosmic String](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/cosmic_string.json): The conical spacetime around an infinitely thin, straight topological defect, locally flat but with an angular deficit set by the string's tension. It produces no local gravity yet causes global lensing and double images. - [Vilenkin-Ipser-Sikivie Domain Wall](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/domain_wall.json): The gravitational field of an infinitely thin domain wall, whose tension equals its surface energy density, found by Alexander Vilenkin in 1983 and by James Ipser and Pierre Sikivie in 1984. Spacetime is flat on either side of the wall, the wall repels test bodies, and at each moment it is a sphere with both sides inside it, so space is closed. - [Visser Thin Shell Wormhole](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/thin_shell_wormhole.json): Matt Visser's traversable wormhole of 1989: two copies of the Schwarzschild exterior cut at a radius $a$ outside the horizon and joined there. All of its matter is a thin shell of negative surface energy density at the throat, and everywhere else spacetime is vacuum. - [Vuorio's Universe and Warped Anti-de Sitter Space](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/vuorio_warped_ads.json): An empty space of gravity in three dimensions with a mass for the graviton, whose time twists about every point. It is anti-de Sitter space with its light cones stretched or squashed along one direction, and stretched, as in Vuorio's universe, it holds closed timelike curves through every event. - [Wahlquist's Rotating Perfect Fluid](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/wahlquist.json): A rigidly rotating body of perfect fluid in closed form, its energy density and pressure tied by $\mu + 3p = \mu_0$, which Hugo Wahlquist found in 1968. The surface of zero pressure closes around the fluid, and no asymptotically flat vacuum can be joined to it. - [White Hole, the Lagging Core of Novikov and Ne'eman](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/white_hole.json): A ball of dust that comes out of a singularity through the past horizon of Schwarzschild's exterior, Oppenheimer and Snyder's collapse with the time reversed. Igor Novikov and Yuval Ne'eman proposed it in 1964 and 1965 as a piece of the big bang that started late, and as what a quasar is. - [Witten's Black Hole in Two Dimensions](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/witten_black_hole.json): A black hole in two spacetime dimensions, a solution of the low energy equations of string theory for a metric and a dilaton, and an exact string background. It has a horizon, a spacelike singularity, and Kruskal's diagram, and its Hawking temperature is the same for every mass. With matter added it is the model of Callan, Giddings, Harvey, and Strominger for a black hole that forms and evaporates. - [Zipoy-Voorhees Deformed Mass](https://damiansowinski.com/MFS/assets/data/metrics/zipoy_voorhees.json): A static, axially symmetric vacuum field whose Weyl potential is Newton's potential of a uniform rod, found by Georges Darmois in 1927, David Zipoy in 1966, and B. H. Voorhees in 1970, and also called the $\gamma$ metric and the $q$ metric. It deforms Schwarzschild's metric by a quadrupole, and for every deformation a naked curvature singularity stands where the horizon was. ## Python libraries In each library's documentation, the pages with runnable examples are Jupyter notebooks, and every notebook page has buttons that run it in Binder or Google Colab. - [Code](https://damiansowinski.com/code.html): The open-source libraries behind the physics. - [pyCA: Cellular Automata](https://damiansowinski.com/pyCA/): Documentation; source at https://github.com/EternalTime/CellularAutomata - [pyCE: Configurational Entropy](https://damiansowinski.com/pyCE/): Documentation; source at https://github.com/EternalTime/pyCE - [pyCoop: Cooperation Games](https://damiansowinski.com/pyCoop/): Documentation; source at https://github.com/EternalTime/pyCoop - [pyEDW: Exo-Daisy World](https://damiansowinski.com/pyEDW/): Documentation; source at https://github.com/EternalTime/pyEDW - [LEAFS: Foraging Simulator](https://damiansowinski.com/LEAFS/): Documentation; source at https://github.com/EternalTime/LEAFS - [pyGD: Graph Dynamics](https://damiansowinski.com/pyGD/): Documentation; source at https://github.com/EternalTime/pyGD ## Applets - [Applets](https://damiansowinski.com/applets.html): Interactive simulations in the browser, from the Ising model and Maxwell's demon to Lenia, flocking and quantum tunnelling.
