## Get an API key
- Sign up for a free API key: https://app.currencyapi.com/register (free plan: 300 requests a month, up to 10 requests a minute).
- Send the key in the `apikey` header, or as the `apikey` query parameter (`?apikey=...`).
- Keep it in an environment variable, e.g. `CURRENCYAPI_KEY`.
- First call: `curl -H "apikey: $CURRENCYAPI_KEY" "https://api.currencyapi.com/v3/latest"`
- MCP server: https://api.currencyapi.com/mcp (streamable HTTP, the same `apikey` header).

## Plans
- Free ($0): 300 requests a month, daily updates, latest and historical rates (daily history back to 1999), private use only, no credit card.
- Small ($9.99 a month): 15,000 requests, hourly updates, commercial use, adds the convert endpoint (`/v3/convert`).
- Medium ($39.99 a month): 600,000 requests, updates every 60 seconds, adds the range endpoint (`/v3/range`, JSON or CSV).
- Large ($79.99 a month): 1,700,000 requests, updates every 60 seconds. Custom: more than 1,700,000 requests, on request.
