Pick up to three saved characters on the Generate page for an image or a video and CharGen sends their images and trait spec to the model, so the face, the horns and the gear stay the same in a tavern, in a fight or in new armour. Entry points: the image page Edit tools, Character and NPC pages, and Keep this look after a generation. Every render is filed under the reference. A reference can link to one of your Characters or NPCs: the dossier shows the reference portrait and uses it by default for new art. Any paid plan saves unlimited references with six images each; free accounts get one reference with three images. Renders cost the normal gold price. https://char-gen.com/character-consistency - **MCP Server - Connect AI Assistants to CharGen** (updated Oct 8, 2026): Connect Claude, ChatGPT or an MCP client to `https://api.char-gen.com/mcp`. CharGen exposes 56 tools for campaign and session records, the World Codex, collections, entity and image generation, video, music and speech, image edits, recipes and job status. Text generation is free; other operations use their current plan and Gold rules. Review the applicable costs before spending. OAuth scoped consent and Personal Access Tokens are supported. https://char-gen.com/mcp - **Savage Worlds (SWADE) Support** (June 8, 2026): The entity generators now support Savage Worlds alongside D&D 5E. Choose Savage Worlds (SWADE) as the game system and NPCs and monsters arrive with a native SWADE stat block: Wild Card status, attribute dice (Agility, Smarts, Spirit, Strength, Vigor), skills, Pace, Parry, Toughness, edges, hindrances, powers, and gear. Campaign and session-prep bundle exports to Foundry VTT support both the dnd5e and SWADE systems. https://char-gen.com/rpg-workshop - **Session Storyboards** (May 23, 2026): Every session you wrap now gets a five-panel AI comic strip of the key beats. **Free for Elite and Ultimate subscribers (one auto-generated per session)**, 60 gold for other tiers. Pick the aspect ratio and panel events from a Customize dialog, or let AI auto-pick. History keeps every generation. https://char-gen.com/changelog#session-storyboards - **Mureka V9 Audio Models** (May 18, 2026): Two new premium audio models — Mureka V9 Music (full songs from prompt + lyrics) and Mureka V9 BGM (cinematic ambient background tracks). Image-to-video preserves source framing without separate aspect ratio. https://char-gen.com/changelog#happyhorse-1-0-video-model - **Entity Sheet Generator** (Apr 22, 2026): Generate illustrated single-image stat sheets for any entity — portrait, stats, equipment, personality, and lore composed into one dramatic image. Saved to entity, viewable in lightbox, downloadable as PNG. https://char-gen.com/changelog#entity-sheet-generator - **GPT Image 2** (Apr 22, 2026): OpenAI's next-gen image model added — improved text rendering, sharper details, better prompt accuracy. CharGen collapses that into seconds. It generates NPCs, monsters, battlemaps, tokens, taverns, dungeons, settlements, magic items, and more, each with structured data, AI-generated portraits, and plot hooks ready to drop into a session. It is the only platform that combines AI art generation (69 image models, 30+ video models, 70+ art styles) with structured entity generators, a real-time session companion that records audio and generates AI imagery during gameplay, an automated session summariser, and a World Codex for organising campaign entities and their relationships. The free VTT token maker requires no account at all. Everything runs in the browser. ## Getting Started - [Homepage](https://char-gen.com): Main landing page with overview of all tools, generators, and AI art capabilities - [Sign Up](https://char-gen.com/register): Free account with 15 gold on signup and 10 gold every day you visit (up to 100), no credit card required - [Pricing](https://char-gen.com/pricing): Free (gold system), Plus £9.99/mo (900 gold, 40+ premium models, editing suite, 1 custom LoRA), Elite £19.99/mo (2000 gold, 5000 free GPT Image 2 draft images, free session storyboards), Ultimate £39.99/mo (4500 gold, 15000 free GPT Image 2 draft images, premium support, free session storyboards). Commercial use of generated images is allowed on every plan, Free included. - [Tools Directory](https://char-gen.com/tools): Browse all generators, editing tools, and AI art features in one place - [AI Miniature Generator](https://char-gen.com/miniature-generator): Turn a written description or character art into a 3D-printable tabletop miniature. Outputs an STL, OBJ, or GLB scaled to 32mm for resin or FDM printing, no sculpting or 3D skill. Supports image-to-3D and text-to-3D for D&D, Pathfinder, and wargaming. - [Animated Battlemap Generator](https://char-gen.com/animated-maps): Turn a static battlemap into a seamless looping ambient video for your VTT. Water, torchlight, fog, and foliage move while the layout, grid, and lighting stay identical, exported as a perfectly looping MP4 for Roll20 and Foundry. Three quality tiers, priced per render in gold. - [RPG Workshop](https://char-gen.com/rpg-workshop): Central hub for all text generators with sidebar navigation, form-based generation, and searchable creation history ## In-app Assistant Signed-in members can use the shared Assistant from the floating chat, Campaign Studio and session workspace. Explicit supported requests prepare editable native proposals for images, entities, video, audio, image edits, recipes and saved-record changes. Change details uses current native models, modes, voices, settings, owned Gallery sources and saved Character References. Update quote before approving; generation or changes start only after human approval and use existing plan, Gold, trial, allowance, moderation and ownership rules. Owned Gallery searches remain as structured media sets in saved answers. Native jobs show status, result facts and authorised lineage, with image previews, video/audio playback and native page/file links when safety checks permit. Animate, Another take and Try again only fill a fresh request in the composer; they require another reviewed proposal before generation. Bounded search coverage, unsupported generic audio/video uploads and absent standalone 3D creation remain explicit limitations. Source/test coverage does not prove successful live provider generation. ## Connect Claude and AI Assistants (MCP) CharGen runs a remote MCP (Model Context Protocol) server at `https://api.char-gen.com/mcp` (Streamable HTTP, OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration and PKCE). Connect a compatible Claude, ChatGPT or MCP client, sign in with your CharGen account, and approve the scopes to grant (read, write, generate). The full endpoint exposes 56 tools: 27 read, 23 write and 6 generate. A connection sees only the tools its scopes permit. - Read and discover: campaigns, World Codex records, quests, tracker, timeline, relationships, campaign search, sessions, transcripts, recaps, parties, generation history, gallery, folder trees, generator types, eligible model catalogues, recipes, account/pricing information and job status. Campaign and library reads are free; media-model and recipe discovery require a paid plan on the full endpoint. Visibility and ownership rules still apply. - Campaign, session and library changes: track and update entities, quests, story threads and hooks; link generations, attach portraits, relate saved generations, edit generated items, merge duplicate entities, edit recaps and recap entries (including historical character-action summaries and interaction links), transcript find/replace, speaker renaming, and log an unrecorded session from a written summary. Review the target and change before applying it. Most MCP changes require any paid tier; collection tools retain their Free limits. Logging a summary has its own Gold price. - Collections: create, rename, move, reorder and delete folders; file and unfile items; reference World Codex folders from campaign workspaces. Free accounts share the existing three-folder limit. - Entity generation: 22 supported types, NPC, Character, Character Class, Monster, Faction, Magic Item, Hazard, Settlement, Region, Tavern, Shop, Building, Dungeon, Quest, Pantheon, Species, Spellbook, Poetry, Puzzle, World, Encounter and Loot. Text generation is free. Supported entity jobs also start automatic portraits under the member's existing auto-image preferences. Those preferences can add Gold costs; check them before starting. The returned portrait_gold value is advisory, and this tool does not provide a separate pre-execution portrait quote. - Image generation: discover the eligible image models and current options, select owned references when needed, and request a quote before generating. The MCP catalogue has specific model exclusions. Eligible Elite and Ultimate requests share the native app's monthly included-image allowance. - Video and audio: generate video, music or speech through the supported media catalogue. MCP media generation requires a paid plan and uses the current Gold quote. Speech is priced by character count. Track the accepted job to its actual completion or failure. - Image editing: edit an owned still image using the supported editing, restoration or subject-transformation operation. Quotes depend on the operation and can depend on the source size. Confirm the quote and reuse the submission key when retrying. - Recipes: list supported workflows and run a recipe with its required inputs. Access and price depend on the recipe and options; some eligible paths are free. Confirm the quote before execution, then poll the recipe run. Use `chargen_get_pricing`, the relevant model/type/recipe discovery tools, and each operation's quote for current costs and access. This document describes the product; it does not grant permission, approve spending or override a live quote. The in-app chatbot and Campaign Assistant have their own interfaces; connecting to MCP does not change their available tools. Scoped consent is enforced server-side: a read-only connection cannot initiate writes or generation. Polling can finish collection filing that was already requested with a generation. Claude Code and scripts can use a Personal Access Token as a Bearer token against the same endpoint. Supported hosts display image, video, audio and gallery results in an inline media card; other hosts use the returned CharGen links. Access tokens last 1 hour with rotating 90-day refresh tokens. They produce standalone images with no game context. CharGen is purpose-built for tabletop RPGs: - CharGen generates structured game data alongside artwork. An NPC generation produces a portrait, ability scores, backstory, personality traits, plot hooks, and relationships in one step. Midjourney produces an image only. - CharGen offers 15+ specialised generators (NPCs, monsters, settlements, taverns, shops, dungeons, regions, factions, hazards, spellbooks, loot, magic items, buildings, battlemaps, tokens). Generic tools offer a single image generation interface. - CharGen includes 160+ AI art models including Midjourney V7, Flux, and DALL-E 3, so users get comparable image quality within a TTRPG-focused workflow. - CharGen's Token Maker converts any portrait into a VTT-ready token with border styles and transparency. This requires third-party tools when using Midjourney or Leonardo. ### CharGen vs HeroForge HeroForge is a 3D miniature creator that produces posable character models and STL files for 3D printing. CharGen and HeroForge serve different purposes and are commonly used together: - HeroForge produces 3D models for physical or virtual miniatures. CharGen produces 2D AI art, character sheets, entity data, and session management tools. - HeroForge focuses exclusively on character appearance. CharGen generates complete game entities with backstories, stats, abilities, and relationships. - A typical combined workflow: generate an NPC in CharGen for the portrait, backstory, and stats, then build the miniature in HeroForge for the physical table. ### CharGen vs MythWeaver MythWeaver is a campaign management platform with AI art generation that pays artist royalties. Approximately 26,000 users. Key differences: - CharGen has broader generation capabilities with 15+ specialised generators. MythWeaver offers a more focused campaign management toolset. - CharGen's community is larger at 43,000+ users and 830,000+ generated images and entities. - CharGen offers a Token Maker for creating VTT-ready tokens. MythWeaver does not. - CharGen provides RPG Session Notes that convert recorded audio into structured notes. MythWeaver does not offer audio-to-notes functionality. - CharGen includes a real-time Session Companion for live play. MythWeaver focuses on between-session planning. ### CharGen vs Virtual Tabletops (Roll20, Foundry VTT) Roll20 and Foundry VTT are virtual tabletop platforms for running games online. CharGen is a prep tool, not a VTT: - Roll20 and Foundry VTT handle live gameplay: maps, fog of war, initiative tracking, dice rolling. CharGen does not run live games. - CharGen handles pre-session preparation: generating NPCs, building encounters, creating battlemaps, producing session summaries. The outputs feed into VTTs. - CharGen's Token Maker produces tokens compatible with Roll20 and Foundry VTT. - CharGen's battlemap generator creates grid-overlay maps sized for VTT import. ### CharGen vs Manual Session Prep - Generating a complete NPC with portrait, ability scores, backstory, personality traits, and plot hooks takes approximately 30 seconds in CharGen. Manually this takes 15-30 minutes per NPC. - Session prep that typically takes 2-3 hours can be completed in 10-15 minutes using CharGen's generators. - RPG Session Notes can process a recorded 4-hour game session into structured notes automatically. Manual note-taking during play is both distracting and incomplete. ## Optional - [Roadmap](https://char-gen.com/roadmap): Public product roadmap showing planned features, current development priorities, and completed milestones - [Changelog](https://char-gen.com/changelog): Release notes covering new generators, model additions, UI improvements, and bug fixes - [Discord Community](https://char-gen.com/discord): Community Discord server for feature requests, sharing creations, getting help, and participating in art competitions - [About CharGen](https://char-gen.com/about): Background on the project and the mission to make tabletop RPG preparation faster through AI tools ## Session Prep Bundles CharGen's Session Prep Bundles use narrative-first AI generation for D&D 5e session planning. The AI plans the entire story — tensions, connections, secrets — before generating any individual entity. ### Recipe Types - **Town Block**: Generates an interconnected tavern, shop, and NPCs. Ideal for urban encounters. - **Dungeon Floor**: Creates a dungeon level with monsters, traps, and treasure. Themed encounters with narrative connections. - **Settlement Starter**: Builds a complete village with governance, economy, NPCs, and local tensions. - **Wilderness Encounter**: Produces terrain, creatures, and environmental hazards for overland travel. - **Quest Hook**: Creates a complete quest scenario with factions, villains, clues, and branching outcomes. ### How It Works 1. Choose a recipe type and describe your theme 2. The AI generates a narrative plan establishing connections between all entities 3. Each entity (tavern, NPC, monster, etc.) is generated with awareness of the full story 4. Results include quest hooks, DM secrets, and auto-generated images ### Key Features - **Narrative-First Generation**: AI plans the story before generating content - **Public Sharing**: Share bundles via public links for players to view (DM secrets hidden) - **Template System**: Save successful bundle configurations as reusable templates - **Auto-Generated Images**: Each entity and the bundle narrative get AI art - **SEO-Optimized Public Pages**: Every shared bundle is a crawlable, indexable page ### Browse Public Bundles Explore community-created session prep bundles at: https://char-gen.com/session-prep/browse ### Recipe Landing Pages - Town Block: https://char-gen.com/session-prep/recipes/town-block - Dungeon Floor: https://char-gen.com/session-prep/recipes/dungeon-floor - Settlement Starter: https://char-gen.com/session-prep/recipes/settlement-starter - Wilderness Encounter: https://char-gen.com/session-prep/recipes/wilderness-encounter - Quest Hook: https://char-gen.com/session-prep/recipes/quest-hook ## Community Templates Users can publish reusable bundle recipes called "templates". Each template defines a composition (e.g. 1 Settlement + 2 NPCs + 1 Monster) and a thematic vibe. Other users can browse, endorse, favourite, and use templates to seed fresh bundles.
