# Carbon Mapper > Carbon Mapper is a nonprofit organization that delivers satellite-based methane and CO2 detection data to accelerate emission reductions. It tracks and publicly shares facility-level greenhouse gas super-emitter data via its satellite program and open data portal. Carbon Mapper, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on filling data gaps and improving global monitoring of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) to enable science-based decision-making. It uses imaging spectroscopy on aircraft and satellites to detect, pinpoint and quantify methane and CO2 point sources (super-emitters) at the scale of individual facilities, often down to specific equipment, across sectors including oil and gas, coal, electricity generation, waste and agriculture. Carbon Mapper leads the Carbon Mapper Coalition, a philanthropically funded public-private partnership with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Planet Labs PBC, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), University of Arizona, Arizona State University and RMI. The coalition developed the Tanager satellites, built by Planet with a JPL-designed imaging spectrometer; Tanager-1 launched in August 2024 as the first in a planned constellation intended to provide sustained monitoring of up to 90% of methane and CO2 super-emitters globally. Observations are published on the free, public Carbon Mapper data portal (https://data.carbonmapper.org), which combines Tanager satellite data with NASA EMIT measurements from the International Space Station and airborne campaigns such as NASA AVIRIS and the ASU Global Airborne Observatory. Registered users can also access the data programmatically through a Data API and a STAC API. The data is available for non-commercial use by governments, facility operators, nonprofits, journalists and researchers; commercial use and redistribution are governed by the Terms of Use.
