ENERGIZE . LEARN Years in Business 0 + Training Courses 0 + Topic Areas 0 Service Offerings 0 + Get Started Y2K to now From There to Here It started with a red Nokia, a laptop, and a dial-up connection. A home office, no staff, and no course library. Just an understanding of what made learning sticky, what made a day go by quickly, and what a training facilitator needed to do to help people make connections. That was 2000. Business Training Works has been at it ever since. Since those early days, our team of one has expanded to a network of seasoned facilitators and back-office support staff. And just as our team has grown over the years, so has our content. We started with one assessment and over time built a series of models, frameworks, and case studies unique to us. The people and the product are part of what makes this work. The other element is the process. We do everything we can to be easy to work with. Why? Because we have one goal: help people do their work better. If the product is no good, fail. If the facilitator doesn’t connect, fail. If the processes create barriers, fail. For more than twenty-five years, we’ve worked with that formula: create strong product, engage in the classroom, and look for ways to say yes, not no. Our current library consists of hundreds of workshops and virtual training programs. These experiences are unique to us and not licensed content or repackaged materials from the 1990s. Said another way, a lot of providers offer management training courses, but they won’t look like ours. We build from scratch and use original case studies and proprietary frameworks to create learning experiences you won’t find anywhere else. When you come to us, we want to understand where you are and where you want to go. If an existing solution can help you with that journey, we’ll recommend it. If we don’t have the right fit, we can often build one or curate something close. Either way, you’ll know where you stand. 2000+ Client Engagements Transparency We put our course overviews, workshop summaries, and pricing on our site without a login, a form, or a paywall. We want people to be able to learn about us, decide whether we’re a good fit, and make informed decisions before they ever reach out. Clients have told us for years that they appreciate it. We think it’s just the right way to operate. Fit We’ll tell you when we’re not the right choice. If the timeline doesn’t allow us to do the content justice, we’ll say so. If training isn’t the solution to the problem, we’ll say that too. And if we know someone better suited to what you need, we’ll point you in their direction. We’d rather give you a useful answer than a convenient one. Innovation We’re always looking for better ways to do this work: better ways to design it, better ways to deliver it, and better ways to make the experience worthwhile for everyone involved. That push doesn’t stop. We write original case studies, develop new frameworks, and keep asking whether there’s an approach that makes learning stick rather than just land. Flexibility What you’re told going in and what you find when you arrive are not always the same thing. Group sizes change. Priorities shift. The thing everyone assumed would take an hour takes ten minutes, or the reverse. We’re very good at adjusting. We’ve built that capability deliberately because the work requires it. We’ll also tell you when a request has reached the point where accommodating it would compromise the outcome. Flexibility has limits, and respecting those limits is part of doing the job well. Improvement We’ve been refining this work for twenty-five years and we’re not finished. We look hard at what worked, what didn’t, and what we could do differently. When something falls short, we want to know and we’ll make it right. We hold ourselves to a high standard because our clients hold themselves to one too. Fun We love this work and we think that shows. We lean into examples and scenarios that are genuinely engaging — sometimes even a little absurd — while staying grounded in the realities of organizational life. Whether the client is a corporation, a nonprofit, a government agency, or something in between: if the place issues people a check, it’s a business. We design for that world. Measure twice, cut once. The cost of a bad cut is not just the wasted material. It is the time, the momentum, and sometimes the whole project. - [Change Management Guide – Part One](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/guide/change-management-guide-part-one/): Before leaders choose a framework, build a plan, or bring in outside support, they need to know whether the organization is actually ready to begin. This section lays out seven questions that test that readiness. They address the reason for the change, the type of change, the groups affected, the definition of success, leadership readiness, organizational history, and the ability to stay oriented when circumstances shift. The purpose is not delay. It is honesty. A change effort that cannot answer these questions clearly is already carrying risks that will surface later at a higher cost. - [Change Management Guide – Part Two](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/guide/change-management-guide-part-two/): Before deciding how to approach a change, leaders need a working understanding of the field around them. This section introduces the major types of change-management providers and the major frameworks that have shaped the discipline over time. Its purpose is not to push one model or one provider type. It is to give leaders enough vocabulary and context to understand what exists, recognize the differences among approaches, and make more deliberate choices about how to structure change work. - [Change Management Guide – Part Three](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/guide/purpose-triangle-framework-for-organizational-change/): The Purpose Triangle is Business Training Works’ strategic framework for defining change before execution begins. It helps organizations clarify the current state, the future state, and the reason movement between them is worth the cost. Rather than treating change as a rollout problem, the model defines what must shift in the work, the process, and the experience of the people involved. This page explains how the framework works, why large organizations often need nested triangles, and what tends to go wrong when this level of definition is skipped. - [Change Management Guide – Part Four](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/guide/change-management-guide-part-four/): TRANSFORM is Business Training Works’ execution architecture for change. Where the Purpose Triangle defines the strategic case for movement, TRANSFORM organizes the how at the planning level so leaders can build structured execution plans tied to a shared strategic direction. This page explains what TRANSFORM is, why it is built as an architecture rather than a simple process, how the nine elements work, and what organizations tend to underinvest in when they try to execute change at scale. - [Change Management Guide – Part Five](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/guide/change-management-guide-part-five/): The Purpose Triangle defines the WHY and the new what. TRANSFORM organizes the how at the planning level. But neither framework moves without specific forms of implementation work. This page explains the five elements that bring change to life in practice: facilitated discussion, roadmap and planning, training, coaching, and evaluation and measurement. It also shows what each one looks like when handled well, what happens when it is handled poorly, and why every serious change effort depends on all five. - [Change Management Guide – Part Six](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/guide/change-management-guide-part-six/): Every change initiative requires the same five implementation functions. The question is who should do them. This page examines the three basic resourcing paths: internal ownership, outside support, and hybrid delivery. It explains why the right answer depends less on instinct or budget alone than on an honest assessment of capacity, skill, and standing across the work the initiative requires. - [Change Management Guide – Part Seven](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/guide/change-management-guide-part-seven/): Choosing a change-management partner is not just a procurement decision. It is a judgment about fit, capability, working style, and the kind of support an organization will actually receive when the work gets difficult. This page introduces the Five Cs as a framework for making that judgment well: core frameworks, capacity, capability, compatibility, and cost. It simplifies complex processes, concentrating on essential principles and tools for real-world success. Through video commentary and practical examples, the course illustrates how to effectively manage projects and overcome challenges. ## Resources - [How to Stop Meetings From Eating the Workday](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/how-to-stop-meetings-from-eating-the-workday/): A meeting is work only if it produces work. - [What “That Costs Too Much” Means](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/what-customers-mean-when-they-say-it-costs-too-much/): The customer says, “It costs too much.” - [Driving Organizational Culture](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/driving-organizational-culture/): Most organizations treat culture as a messaging challenge. They write values statements, post them in lobbies, include them in onboarding packets, and reference them in all-hands meetings. Then they wonder why the culture does not match the document. The reason is straightforward: culture is not what an organization says it values. It is what the organization rewards, tolerates, develops, and models on an ordinary Tuesday. No poster changes that. No values workshop changes it either, at least not on its own. - [Recovering from Change Fatigue](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/recovering-from-change-fatigue/): Every change initiative asks something of the people inside it. It asks them to learn new systems, new processes, new reporting structures, new expectations. It asks them to give up habits that worked, relationships that were comfortable, and ways of operating that had become second nature. It asks them to tolerate uncertainty about their own roles, their own futures, and the direction of the organization at large. - [Managing the Human Side of Change](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/managing-the-human-side-of-change/): Change creates winners and losers. That is not a cynical observation. It is the starting point for anyone who wants to lead change with any degree of effectiveness. Until you are willing to look at who gains and who loses in a given change, and name it honestly, you are working with an incomplete picture. And people know when you have an incomplete picture. They can feel it in every town hall, every email from leadership, every carefully worded FAQ that answers the questions nobody was actually asking. - [Negotiating With Someone Who Came Prepared to Push](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/negotiating-with-an-agressive-person/): Some negotiation conversations feel strange from the first five minutes. - [How Buyers Prepare Before They Ever Talk to You](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/how-buyers-prepare-before-they-ever-talk-to-you/): The sale does not begin when the buyer requests a proposal. - [Using TIPO to Build Stronger Negotiation Strategies](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/using-tipo-to-build-stronger-negotiation-strategies/): Mara had negotiated plenty of things in her life: a later curfew for her son, the price of a used dining room table, a project deadline that had no relationship to the laws of time, and once, memorably, the last aisle seat on a sold-out flight from Chicago. - [What to Know Before You Negotiate](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/what-to-know-before-you-negotiate/): Too many negotiations begin with one vague hope: I want this to go well. - [Conquering Complaints During Meetings](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/conquering-complaints-during-meetings/): Complaint sessions usually start with a real problem. - [Managing Change in the Middle](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/managing-change-in-the-middle/): Change often begins with energy. Leaders announce a new direction. The kickoff meeting is polished. The slide deck is clear. The case for change sounds persuasive. People nod. Questions are answered. A timeline appears. A training calendar is published. Early adopters show enthusiasm. The project team feels relief because the work has finally moved from planning to launch. - [Avoiding Change Saturation](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/avoiding-change-saturation/): Change is part of work. New systems, new processes, new leaders, new reporting structures, new customer expectations, new compliance requirements, new tools, new markets, new priorities, new products, and new ways of working are normal in modern organizations. - [Addressing Change Resistance](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/addressing-change-resistance/): Change rarely fails because no one announced it. It fails because people do not understand it, do not trust it, do not see themselves in it, or do not believe the organization will support them through it. - [Writing with AI](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/writing-with-ai/): AI writing tools can be useful. They can help you start faster, organize messy thoughts, revise awkward sentences, adjust tone, summarize long material, create outlines, generate examples, and spot patterns you may have missed. Used well, they can make business writing clearer, faster, and more reader focused. - [Facing Challenges Head On](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/facing-challenges-head-on/): Avoidance can feel efficient in the moment. You skip the awkward conversation. You let the vague email sit unanswered. You tell yourself the issue may resolve on its own. You postpone feedback because the timing is not ideal. You ignore the tension in a meeting because nobody else has named it. You keep working around a coworker’s missed deadlines because addressing the pattern feels uncomfortable. - [Why Questions Matter](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/why-questions-matter/): Most workplace communication problems do not begin with bad answers. They begin with weak questions. - [When “Yes” Doesn’t Mean Agreement](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/when-yes-doesnt-mean-agreement/): Every professional who has worked across cultures has been in this meeting. The discussion goes well. Questions get answered. Someone says yes. The call ends warmly. Two weeks later, nothing has moved, and both sides are quietly frustrated with each other. - [How to Tell Whether Your Team Has a Skills Problem or a Structure Problem](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/how-to-tell-whether-your-team-has-a-skills-problem-or-a-structure-problem/): Most team problems get misdiagnosed. A manager watches her team miss a deadline, stumble through a handoff, or limp out of a meeting with no clear decision, and she concludes that someone needs training. So she finds a program, books a date, and waits for things to improve. Sometimes they do. Often they don't. The reason they don't is that the problem was never about what people knew or could do. It was about the conditions they were working in. - [How to Tell a Good Business Story](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/how-to-tell-a-good-business-story/): Data persuades. But stories move people. The most effective communicators in business know this. They do not open a presentation with a slide full of numbers. They open with a moment, a character, a problem. By the time they get to the data, the audience already cares. Storytelling is a skill. Like most skills, it breaks down into steps anyone can learn and practice. Here is how to build a business story worth telling. - [How to Handle Difficult Employee Conversations](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/how-to-handle-difficult-employee-conversations/): Difficult employee conversations are part of management. Performance slips. Behavior creates friction. Deadlines are missed. Follow-through weakens. At some point, a manager has to step in and say something clear. - [How to Choose a Negotiation Course](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/how-to-choose-a-negotiation-course/): Most negotiation training fails. Not because the content is wrong, but because people stop using it the moment the session ends. - [Why Training Fails and What to Do About It](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/avoiding-the-training-blues/): Most organizations have lived this story. A company invests real money in a training program. Participants show up, engage with the material, and leave with good intentions. Six weeks later, nothing has changed. The workbooks sit in a desk drawer. The skills never surface. The business problem that prompted the training still exists. - [Why Every Professional Needs Critical Thinking Training](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/why-every-professional-needs-critical-thinking-training/): Think about the last decision that cost you something. Time, money, a relationship, an opportunity. Chances are, the problem was not a lack of information. You had information. The problem was what you did with it — how you evaluated it, what assumptions you brought to it, which voices you listened to and which you dismissed, and how clearly you saw the difference between what you knew and what you merely believed. - [How to Design Successful Change Management Training](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/eight-change-management-training-skills/): Organizations that prepare their teams for change are more likely to navigate transitions successfully. Whether you’re looking for an online change management course, an instructor-led change management training, or an onsite change management program, the right training approach can make the difference between a smooth transition and one filled with resistance. A mix of structured learning, real-world practice, and ongoing reinforcement can help employees and leaders build the confidence they need to lead change effectively. - [Ten Key Elements of Employee Motivation](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/ten-key-elements-of-employee-motivation/): Motivated employees are not the result of a single program, a clever perk, or an inspiring all-hands meeting. They are the result of an environment built deliberately over time, one where people understand why their work matters, have what they need to do it well, and feel that the organization sees them as more than a productivity unit. - [Building a Culture of Purpose](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/building-a-culture-of-purpose/): Building a culture of purpose isn’t a project—it’s a mindset. It takes consistency, adaptability, and a willingness to listen. - [The Power of Empathy](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/the-power-of-empathy/): Empathy is the ability to understand another person’s experience, perspective, emotions, needs, and pressures. In business, empathy is not merely a pleasant personality trait. It is a practical workplace skill. It affects how leaders listen, how customer service employees respond, how teams solve problems, how clients experience a relationship, and how organizations make decisions. - [What Successful People Do Differently](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/twelve-game-changing-habits-of-successful-people/): Look around at the people who seem to move through the world with purpose and momentum. They are not operating on a different playing field. They have the same hours, the same limitations, and often the same doubts. What separates them is their daily architecture — the habits, mindsets, and choices they stack deliberately until those choices become automatic. This is your roadmap to leveling up your game. - [Practical Tips for Decluttering and Staying Organized](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/practical-tips-for-decluttering-and-staying-organized/): Cleaning and organizing an office may not top anyone's list of favorite tasks, but few investments pay off faster. A well-ordered workspace sharpens focus, lifts productivity, and signals professionalism to everyone who walks through the door. Clutter, on the other hand, costs more than most people realize — it fragments attention, slows decision-making, and creates a low-grade stress that compounds over time. The process looks less daunting when you break it into stages and stop treating it as one enormous project. - [Building a Professional Presence Online](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/building-a-professional-presence-online/): Social media has become an integral part of professional networking and career development. Whether you’re connecting with colleagues, showcasing your expertise, or staying informed about industry trends, the way you use social media can greatly impact your reputation. To maximize its potential while maintaining professionalism, consider these key strategies. - [Cell Phone Etiquette](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/cell-phone-etiquette/): Your cell phone is one of the most useful tools you carry. It is also one of the easiest ways to damage your professional reputation without realizing it. Poor cell phone etiquette does not just annoy people. It signals to colleagues, clients, and supervisors that you lack self-awareness or simply do not care about the people around you. The good news is that the adjustments required are small. The impact of making them is not. - [Sucessful Job Interviews](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/sucessful-job-interviews/): Job interviews reward preparation. They also reward self-awareness, because the candidates who perform best understand that everything communicates something, from the moment they walk in to the email they send the following morning. The strategies below will not guarantee you the job. Nothing does. But they will give you the best possible chance to be remembered as a strong candidate. - [The Impact of Workplace Appearance](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/the-impact-of-workplace-appearance/): The moment you walk into a room, people begin forming impressions. Before you speak a word, shake a hand, or share a single idea, your appearance has already delivered a message. That message may be accurate or inaccurate, fair or unfair, but it lands regardless. Professionals who understand this do not leave it to chance. - [Mastering the Art of Mingling](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/mastering-the-art-of-mingling/): Networking events make a lot of people uncomfortable, and the discomfort is understandable. Walking into a room full of strangers, making conversation with people you have never met, and leaving a positive impression all at once is a genuine skill. Like most skills, it improves with deliberate practice and a few strategies worth knowing before you walk in the door. - [Goal Setting Made Simple](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/goal-setting-made-simple/): Most people have things they want to accomplish. A promotion, a stronger body, a finished creative project, a business launched, a skill developed. The wanting is rarely the problem. What gets in the way is the gap between intention and action — the fuzzy middle where good ideas go to stall. That gap does not close on its own, and motivation alone will not close it. A clear, structured approach to setting and pursuing goals will. - [Meetings That Matter](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/meetings-that-matter/): Every hour spent in an unnecessary meeting is an hour extracted from the work the meeting was ostensibly called to advance. Multiply that hour by the number of people in the room and the cost becomes visible quickly, though organizations rarely calculate it. They should. A one-hour meeting with ten participants at average professional salaries costs the organization more than most managers spend without authorization on anything else, and it receives a fraction of the scrutiny. - [Twelve Ideas for More Successful Negotiations](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/twelve-ideas-for-more-successful-negotiations/): As the Rolling Stones sang, “You can’t always get what you want.” In negotiation, that line is both true and incomplete. You may not get everything you want, exactly when you want it, in the form you first imagined. Still, a thoughtful negotiator can improve the odds of reaching an agreement that is practical, durable, and worth making. - [How to Discover What’s Important to Your Clients and Prospects](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/how-to-discover-whats-important-to-your-clients-and-prospects/): A sales professional who spends most of a client meeting presenting has spent most of a client meeting guessing. The presentation is built on assumptions about what the client needs, values, and is prepared to act on, and those assumptions may or may not reflect the client's actual situation. The professional who asks good questions and listens to the answers does not need to guess. The client provides the information, and the conversation that results is more useful to both parties than any prepared presentation could have been. - [Twelve Communication Tips for Stronger Sales](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/twelve-communication-tips-for-stronger-sales/): Sales improves when the conversation improves. - [A Step-by-Step Guide to a Polished Presentations](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/a-step-by-step-guide-to-a-polished-presentations/): A presentation planned around the presenter's comfort will serve the presenter. A presentation planned around the audience's needs will serve the purpose. The distinction sounds obvious and is consistently ignored. Most presenters spend their preparation time on what they will say and almost none of it on what the audience needs to receive, understand, and do with the information. The result is a presentation that feels complete to the person delivering it and lands incompletely on the people who were supposed to be changed by it. - [Breaking Free from Bad Slide Syndrome](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/breaking-free-from-bad-slide-syndrome/): A poorly designed slide does not merely fail to help. It competes with the presenter for the audience's attention and wins, because a screen full of text is visible, static, and readable at the audience's own pace while the presenter is audible, transient, and easy to tune out. The audience reads the slide. The presenter continues talking. By the time the slide is read, the presenter has moved on, and the audience is behind. Multiply that pattern across forty slides and the presentation has not been delivered. It has been survived. - [Background Music for PowerPoint](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/background-music-for-powerpoint/): Music can make a presentation feel sharper, warmer, more polished, or more memorable. It can also make a presentation feel cheap. - [Elevating Leadership Through Powerful Presentations](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/elevating-leadership-through-powerful-presentations/): The room was full. Two hundred employees, an energizing soundtrack, a polished slide deck on a large screen. Everything was in place for a meeting that would matter. Then the leader stepped to the lectern, and within five minutes the energy was gone. Nervous delivery, rigid posture, a voice that moved through the material without inflection or pause: the audience disengaged, and the opportunity went with it. - [On-Camera Presentation Skills That Impress](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/on-camera-presentation-skills-that-impress/): A camera does not simply record a presentation. It changes it. - [Speaking Effectively to Larger Groups](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/speaking-effectively-to-larger-groups/): Presenting to two hundred people is not the same activity as presenting to twelve. The feedback mechanisms that regulate a small-group presentation, the visible nods, the questions that surface naturally, the ability to read individual faces and adjust in real time, are absent or unreliable at scale. The presenter who waits for those signals will not receive them and will misread the silence that follows. Large-group presentation requires a different set of preparations, a different relationship to the room, and a clearer understanding of what the audience needs from the experience before the session begins. - [Building Better Presentations](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/building-better-presentations/): A presentation fails when the content is weak. - [Guidelines for Better Customer and Client Telephone Relations](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/guidelines-for-better-customer-and-client-telephone-relations/): The telephone is not a backup channel. For most organizations, it remains the primary instrument through which customers and clients form their impression of how the place operates and whether the people inside it are worth dealing with. A poorly handled call does damage that a well-written email cannot repair. A well-handled call builds confidence that no brochure can manufacture. - [Customer Service Quotations](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/customer-service-quotations/): These customer service quotations are grouped into meaningful categories to provide inspiration for training, presentations, articles, or speeches. - [Why Your Customers Don’t Like You and How to Change That](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/why-your-customers-dont-like-you-and-how-to-change-that/): At two in the morning, in an airport where a crowd has been waiting since six the previous evening, a gate agent announces in a bright and practiced voice that the flight is finally boarding. Elite passengers receive a warm welcome and priority access. Everyone else forms a disorganized line and files on to find that the overhead bins are already occupied by smaller bags, which means their luggage goes back to the cargo hold. They will wait another forty minutes at the carousel on the other end. - [When Helping Hurts Your Business](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/resources/when-helping-hurts-your-business/): Not long ago, a mail-order meat company delivered a gift order to the wrong address. The neighbors were honest, the package was recovered, and the situation resolved itself without much difficulty. What followed, however, was something else entirely. ## Reviews ## Sales Training - [Relationship Sales Training Workshop](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/sales-training-courses/onsite-relationship-sales-training/): This relationship-selling course will: - [Basic Sales Training Workshop](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/sales-training-courses/basic-sales-training-workshop/): This basic sales training course will: - [Sales Fundamentals Training Workshop](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/sales-training-courses/sales-fundamentals-training-workshop/): Sales Training Fundamentals is a half-day, instructor-led workshop designed for teams that want to bring order and clarity to the sales process. A team needs to communicate more effectively. A group of managers needs a stronger foundation in leadership fundamentals. An organization wants to build negotiation skills across a sales force. For these situations, an existing program, adapted to the client's context, is usually the right answer. - [Culture Change Consulting](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/service/culture-change-consulting/): Every organization has a culture. The question is whether the culture it has is the one it wants, and if not, whether leadership is willing to do the specific, unglamorous work required to change it. - [Assessments and Models](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/service/assessments-and-models/): Good development work starts with an accurate picture of where things stand. Assessments provide that picture. They surface what is working, identify what is not, and give individuals and teams a shared language for talking about the gaps between current performance and where they need to be. - [Training Programs Makeovers](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/service/training-programs-makeovers/): Good training programs often represent a big investment. Subject matter expertise, instructional design, facilitation time, participant hours. When a program starts to lose its effectiveness, the answer is rarely to discard that investment and start over. The answer is to find what still works, sharpen what has drifted, and rebuild the parts that no longer reflect how the work gets done. - [Training Boot Camps](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/service/training-boot-camps/): Business Training Works designs and delivers boot camp training programs for professional teams that need to move quickly. Each program runs four to five days and covers a defined topic area with enough depth to produce genuine skill development rather than surface-level awareness. Sessions are instructor-led, hands-on, and built around application so participants leave with skills they can put to work immediately. - [Corporate College](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/service/corporate-college/): Most organizations approach training the same way they approach a hardware store. Something breaks, they identify the part, they buy it, and they move on. The result is a collection of unrelated programs with no throughline, no sequencing, and no connection to where the organization is actually trying to go. Individual sessions may be strong. The overall development effort is not. - [Team-Building Challenges](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/service/team-building-challenges/): The best team-building programs do two things well. They give people a genuinely engaging shared experience, and they produce something useful: a clearer picture of how the group communicates under pressure, a conversation that would have been difficult to start any other way, or a reset on a dynamic the team is ready to change. - [Conference Breakouts](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/service/conference-breakouts/): Attendees often make up their minds about a conference in the breakout rooms. The general session sets the tone, and the breakouts are where people decide whether the event was worth the time away from the office. A well-designed breakout gives attendees a smaller room, a tighter topic, and a facilitator who knows how to use both. A poorly designed one gives them another presentation they could have watched from their desk. - [Conference Keynote Speakers](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/service/conference-keynotes/): A keynote has one job: to give the people in the room something worth carrying out of it. Not a performance to applaud and forget, not a string of stories without a point, but a clear idea, well developed, delivered in a way that connects to the work your audience does every day. - [Meeting and Retreat Facilitation](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/service/meeting-and-retreat-facilitation/): Business Training Works provides professional meeting facilitation and retreat facilitation for organizations that want productive conversations and usable results. - [Executive Coaching](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/service/executive-coaching/): Executive Coaching for Leaders Who Want to Lead Better A Structured, Practical Approach to Stronger Leadership From the Inside Out - [Training Courses and Workshops](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/service/training-courses-and-workshops/): Business Training Works goes beyond the ordinary. Relatable, dynamic, flexible, and fun. How do you prepare for a client engagement? I have a conversation with the client to find out what issues are driving the training, what the messaging is, and what specific goals they are trying to achieve. I also inquire about the participants’ roles and any past training they have had. I then look at the time I’m going to have for delivery; I set priorities and design the day. I choose content and activities based on the objectives, the number of people, and the training space. You’re known to put a lot of work into preparation. Is all that work still necessary after almost 20 years of doing this? My preparation is deliberate so that my presentation can be flexible and spontaneous. The more familiar I am with the content, the timing, and the client, the more quickly I can adapt to the dynamics and needs of the group in the moment. What do you like best about facilitating training? I encourage and thrive on audience participation and love drawing people out through discussions and activities that help them find their own answers. It’s gratifying to watch the “lightbulbs” come on when something really sinks in and they make the connection between what we’re discussing and what they’re dealing with back on the job. When you were leading public seminars, what were some of the more unusual or interesting places you worked? I ran a workshop in the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, England, gave a keynote for 300 at the Melbourne (Australia) Convention and Exhibition Centre, and even conducted a course in what was basically a bus station. You name the venue; I’ve probably been there at some point. How has your international experience influenced your work? Growing up overseas and working abroad early in my career gave me different perspectives on how to approach people and situations. I learned that there are usually a variety of ways to look at one and the same thing and that it’s important to keep an open mind. I feel it has helped me to think outside the box. Conducting training internationally brought awareness of different work styles and work cultures. If I got nervous about a first session in a country like Scotland or New Zealand, Canada or Wales, I quickly realized that people are just people wherever you go. Although the approaches (and accents!) often differ, the challenges they face in the workplace are somewhat universal. How has your work in tourism helped you in the learning and development arena? When I direct tours, I have up to 50 guests with me for several weeks at a time. I have to find new and creative ways to engage the same audience day in and day out. When sharing information on the places visited, I combine statistics, stories, humor, music and more. It’s what inspired my love of teaching and storytelling. This unique leadership role taught me a lot about group dynamics, managing others, and the importance of clear and effective communication. Whether explaining things to my tourists, making arrangements with a supplier, or coordinating with the driver, the only way to stay on target and on schedule is through good communication. I also learned to deal with all types of different, and sometimes difficult, people. Time management is vital on tours. In order to avoid rush hours in cities, grab helicopter reservations in high season, or make it to the Grand Canyon before sunset, you have to be realistic in your timing and allow for the unexpected. I learned a ton about planning and scheduling, which of course are the backbone of any productivity training program. What do you do for fun? I love to spend time with family and friends, travel, watch movies, practice hot yoga, and head down to the beach for a walk, a swim, or to watch our dog Jake play in the surf. - [Myla DeLoatch](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/myla-deloatch/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Prepared, process focused, and interactive. You picked the word “process” to describe your style. Tell me a little more about what you mean by that. I like to give people frameworks. That might mean a model, a set of steps, or a methodology. In other words, I like tools. Frameworks function like recipes. If you follow them, they usually work. And if you know them, even if you don’t follow them step by step, you’re taking an educated gamble. You’re not just working off the cuff because you don’t know any better. What’s important for you to know about a client before facilitating a training program? Often, I’ll start by asking, “Why this,” and “why now?” In addition to understanding what’s driving a need, I also want to know about an organization’s culture, to understand what themes are important, to get a sense of what’s been tried in the past, and to know what’s working well. Gaining that information along with a sense of the group’s norms helps me integrate my approach. The more seamless I can be, the better. You had two careers when you were at Xerox, and the first was in sales. What made you successful in that role, and how do you use that experience now? I was on a team with high standards, and my competitive nature drove me to rise to meet or exceed expectations. Also, the training was exceptional. I learned to be methodical, prepared, and to listen. When I conduct sales training, I know it helps that I’ve been in the trenches. I know what working on commission is like, I know what a good year is like, and I also know how it feels to have a bad year. I think people get that when they work with me. In your second career at Xerox, you were in training. Talk a little bit about that experience. Again, the bar was high. We were on the cutting edge of what was happening in talent development during the time I was there. I learned best practices I still regularly implement. I also learned how to facilitate a library of strong material: leadership, sales, compliance, communication skills, productivity, project management, critical thinking skills, and a bunch of other topics. In addition to sales and facilitation, what else did your time at Xerox teach you? I learned a lot about what good teamwork looked like and the value of process improvement. When I started in sales, I initially worked in house in contract cancellation control. I had a partner who worked in the field. We couldn’t be successful on our own. We had to work together. Teamwork wasn’t all I gained. I learned critical thinking, decision making, and problem solving. Each year, the company required us to work on at least two improvement initiatives. In other words, we looked for broken things that needed fixing and came up with a plan to make it happen. All of that work took place with either functional or cross-functional teams. Over the years I worked on more than two dozen projects. I led a handful too. You’ve been in training and development for quite some time. What surprises you? You know, there’s not a lot that really throws me these days. I hesitate to say I’ve seen it all, but sometimes I think I have. I’ve dealt with missing materials, the wrong materials, under participation, over participation, and many other surprises. Although they weren’t fun while they were happening, those experiences made me better. Do you ever get tired of this work? No. I’ve personally experienced the difference training can make, and I’ll never grow tired of helping people learn how to do their work better and get to the next step in their careers. I did it when I worked with high-school students. I’ve done it with senior executives. In addition to making a difference, is there anything else you enjoy about this field? Yes. Every day is different. No two deliveries are the same. It’s exciting. The other aspect of this work I value is the on-the-job learning I get to do. It keeps me sharp. I’ve had an opportunity to work in so many industries and so many businesses. I’ve had the opportunity to learn a lot. What do you not like about training? I don’t like delivering something I know is poorly designed. I can fix dry material, but I’ve got to be working with someone that allows that to happen. Thankfully, I’m at a point in my career where I can choose my work. We haven’t talked about it yet, so I’m going to ask about the fashion business part of your work and education. Tell me more about that. The fashion business, oh my. Well, the key word is business. Fashion is fun, creative, and exciting. And like anything else, it’s also work. My degree and experience are in the business part of fashion. It’s a fast-paced business and a demanding business. I enjoyed it when I was in it, but I enjoy learning and development more. When you’re not working, what are your interests? When I’m not working you’ll find me skiing, biking, working out, following my favorite sports team, volunteering at church, traveling, keeping up with what’s new in fashion, reading, or listening to an audiobook. - [Shawn Doyle](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/shawn-doyle/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Positive, prepared, and relatable. Some people also think I’m funny. Early in your career, what attracted you to learning and development? I was working in sales, and I did a presentation at a regional meeting where a training director sat in on a session I delivered. He recruited me. I started the job, and I loved it. From that moment on, I knew I’d finally connected with my purpose. It may sound corny, but I enjoyed making a difference in people’s work and challenging them to think. Interestingly, not much has changed. Helping people reach their potential is the main reason I get up each day. Which activity do you like best: facilitation, coaching, or keynote speaking? They serve different purposes, so I can’t say there’s a “best.” I like them all when they’re used to achieve the right goal for a client. For example, a keynote isn’t going to help someone who needs a development intervention, but a well-built coaching plan can. What are your favorite topics to facilitate? I enjoy facilitating topics that drive a business forward. That might mean a six-month leadership development program, a workshop on hiring, a keynote on driving employee engagement, or a course on harassment prevention. What I like more than a specific topic is making a difference to the clients I serve. In what industries do you have the most experience? I’ve been at this work a long time. While I hesitate to say I’ve seen it all, I’ve seen a lot. I’ve worked with retailers, banks, universities, pharmaceutical firms, manufacturing groups, nonprofits, healthcare organizations, professional service firms, call centers, and of course, the cable industry. You write a lot of books. How can someone be an expert on such a wide range of topics? You’re right. I do write a lot. And at first glance, the topics seem diverse. However, there’s a thread about motivation, empowerment, and taking action that runs through much of my work. For example, the Jumpstart Series is about improving various business skills. The first tile in the set, Jumpstart Your Motivation, earned a positive response from readers. Their reaction was the genesis of the larger project. I didn’t initially write with a series in mind. In hindsight, however, the collection allows me to address a wider range of people and business challenges. What is the best part about being an author? Writing gives me an opportunity to share with people I may never meet in person – especially those people living on a different continent who are reading my work. It’s humbling to hear from someone on the other side of the globe that you’ve made a difference. To my delight (and amazement), four of my titles have been translated in ten languages and are distributed in India, Malaysia, Singapore, China, and other places I’ve yet to personally visit. How do you stay current with what’s happening in talent development? I constantly read, I participate in industry groups, and I’m always listening to what’s happening out in the field. In terms of learning, I find there’s no substitute for face-to-face interactions with clients who are confronting real-time real-world challenges. When you’re not working, what are your interests? Enjoying the Pennsylvania countryside with my beautiful wife and our three crazy cats or drawing the occasional cartoon. - [Thomas Farley](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/thomas-farley/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Interactive, lively, unpretentious, and relatable. How has your background as a journalist enhanced your skills as a workshop leader and keynote speaker? I’m naturally inquisitive. To me, there is no such thing as a boring topic. Just boring questions. If you can see past the trite and obvious, there is always a greater story to be told—one that will resonate with audiences in a way that is meaningful and memorable. Having interviewed individuals from all walks of life—from corporate chieftains to Hollywood celebrities—I relish the challenge of establishing a quick rapport with different personality types and—in a very brief span of time—becoming trusted by them to hear and then share their story. In my work for our clients, I never underestimate the value of making a positive impression from the moment I step in front of a group. From there, it is my job to maintain and build upon that impression throughout the time we have together—whether it’s an hour or several days. What challenge do you most enjoy when it comes to working with a group? I’m often brought in by companies that warn me: “Our team has zero attention span…getting them to come to a three-hour workshop is a major deal, so don’t be offended if they start to drift.” At the conclusion of those very same workshops, the participants often approach me to report: “I can’t believe how quickly that time flew!” Or: “I thought this was going to be such a waste of my time, but I learned so much.” And the greatest compliment of all: “I wish the session had been longer!” Why do you think the subjects about which you speak and teach have so much relevance in the modern workplace? As a culture, we’re rapidly losing the ability to communicate meaningfully and without misunderstanding. It’s ironic because that’s happening in an age when we have more platforms for communicating than ever before. The tools for achieving workplace breakthroughs are all within our reach…we just need to know where to look for them and how to make them a regular part of our routine. That is a major focus in all of my programs. You’ve worked with a breadth of clients…are there any experiences that stick out for you as particularly memorable? I’ve had fantastic experiences with so many of our clients—some household names, some not. A few that stand out for their sheer uniqueness include the day I spent working with a Native American tribe in Washington State and a program I conducted for a group of coal miners in West Virginia. Both a far cry from my own life in Manhattan and yet so fascinating and enjoyable—as I hope it was for them as well. You’re often brought in to companies for just a half a day. How do you build rapport with their employees in such a brief span of time? It starts in the weeks before the session takes place. During advance planning calls with our clients, I home in on the specific challenges faced by their teams and ensure my presentation and participatory activities are germane to the attending staff. I seek out relevant case studies and, where possible, use role-play activities that are as real world for the participants as possible. And you’ll never find me using decks that are bogged down with text and bullet points. I use slides for visual impact only. How do you compare doing live television with training? During a broadcast interview, I often have less than five minutes for a segment. It’s an adrenaline rush every time. I’ve yet to work with a corporate client who needs me to speak that quickly! But both situations require me to stay on message, and to deliver insights that stick with the audience long afterward. What is your favorite part of the travel involved in being a Business Training Works team member? I’m an avid runner, so having the chance to hit the streets and parks of the cities and towns where our clients operate is such a treat. My favorite out-of-town route is to cross the Golden Gate Bridge on a beautiful San Francisco morning. I’m also a foodie and a culture hound, so discovering new restaurants or museum exhibits, particularly in a location I’m visiting for the first time, ranks high on my list, too. Are there parts of the world that exert a particular pull for you as destinations you’d like to be training? I’d love to be working with clients in Japan, Great Britain, France, and Germany. With my Spanish-language skills, I’d also like to bring our programs to Latin America. And, suffice it to say, I live for the day when we get a call for training on the Fiji Islands or in New Zealand. - [Elizabeth George](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/elizabeth-george/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Synthesizing, connected, deliberate, and outcome focused. You started your college career at Auburn University but graduated from East Tennessee. How did that happen? The short version of the story is I earned an athletic scholarship on the ETSU NCAA competitive rifle team. How has your experience with shooting influenced your professional work? It taught me about discipline, identifying patterns, and replicating those behaviors that lead to a desired target or goal. You are exceptional at customizing learning experiences for groups and individuals. How do you do it? I’m deliberate. Initially, I work to learn what’s important to a client before a session, and then I do discovery in real time to determine roadblocks, bugs, and other challenges. My objective is to make whatever subject matter I’m presenting relevant and meaningful to the participants attending a workshop. It’s important to me that people leave with actionable steps that will actually make a difference in their work and even their personal lives. You’re known for having people on their feet. Why is movement an essential element in your workshops even in a virtual environment? Movement generates energy and self-awareness. It also has a tendency to generate laughter and fun. Who wouldn’t want to learn that way? What topics do you most enjoy facilitating? I like topics that produce outcomes: leadership skills, communication, awareness, development, and so forth. While I’ve been told I’m entertaining, my primary job is to position people to deliver results. What is the number one challenge you most often see with the various clients for whom you work? Producing consistency. People are usually able to deliver desired results, but they often don’t know how to do it repeatedly. I do a lot of work with discipline, boundaries, and goals. I’m focused on being intentional about “how” and then putting the mental processes and behavioral processes in place that make that “how” happen again and again. Tell me about the clients you most enjoy. I like working with people who want to do their work better – those who are intentional about improvement. They’re not just checking a box. They are in pursuit of some kind of goal or target and are open to change. I like to take a holistic approach. For example, if it’s a customer engagement project, I want to talk to people who are face-to-face with customers and the people who never see a customer. You have a real passion for continuous learning. Where does that come from? Probably my childhood. My father was a computer architect and specialized in ballistic missile defense. My grandfather was a toxicologist and criminologist. I think curiosity and critical thinking are just part of my DNA. When you’re not working, what are your interests? I play the French horn in an orchestra, I’m an active Rotarian, and I have an avid interest in camping, canoeing, and photography. Finally, I love learning new techie gadgets. - [Audrey Halpern](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/audrey-halpern/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Creative, energetic, and participant focused. How do you prepare for a client engagement? I approach client engagements with purpose and focus on outcomes. It’s important to me that training adds measurable value. My curiosity drives me to ask many questions about a client’s business and their needs. That process helps me tailor the content effectively. What do you like best about facilitating training? As a lifelong learner, I enjoy seeing participants make connections, gain new perspectives, and acquire knowledge. Those "ah-ha" moments are what I find most rewarding in this work. How do your experiences in sales and training intersect? Sales is deeply intertwined with education. A significant part of any sale involves helping people make informed decisions. For me, the connection between sales and training has always been natural and complementary. How did you develop expertise in areas such as productivity, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and cross-cultural communication? My foundation in sales served as the training ground for these skills. Selling requires effective communication, organization, and critical thinking, which are essential for success. Over time, my experiences in these areas evolved into broader expertise. What do you enjoy about working with international groups and teaching cross-cultural communication? I enjoy helping people interpret cultural cues. What works in one setting may not translate well in another. Guiding participants through these challenges and making cross-cultural interactions more seamless is incredibly satisfying. You’ve lived in many places and worked with diverse organizations. How has that shaped your perspective? I thrive when I’m learning and adapting to new environments. Collaborating with clients across industries—from pharmaceuticals to aerospace to luxury goods—feeds my curiosity and keeps my work dynamic. What do you do for fun? I have three dogs that keep me busy when I’m at home. I also enjoy reading historical fiction, walking, cooking for others, and watching Korean romantic comedies. - [Louise Jackson](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/louise-jackson/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Authentic, engaging, reflective, and action oriented In what business industries do you have experience? Tech, healthcare, manufacturing, education, retail, and nonprofits. How do you prepare for a training session? I work to uncover ‘the why’ behind the request for the session and learning outcomes the client desires to ensure the content and session structure are relevant. I perform research to learn the organization’s values, vision, and culture. This helps me determine what relevant scenarios the training should address. Why do you think training fails? Training generally fails anytime it’s a one-and-done experience. What’s your solution to that problem? As a facilitator, I work to provide resources and a plan that can be leveraged after the training is over and easily carried in everyday work after the session. When you’re not working, what are your interests? I am a performer at heart. I sing professionally and host podcasts to bring the community together. I enjoy working as an executive coach where I help leaders become their best selves and mentor early-in-career talent. I also enjoy devoting a great deal of my time to community service and civic engagement. - [Greg Jones](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/greg-jones/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Participant focused, thoughtful, and positive. How do you plan for a training session? What’s most important to me is understanding what participants do and the daily challenges they face. Once I understand where the pain or opportunity is, I’m usually able to help people identify practical solutions for addressing those problems or improving their work. You’ve done a lot with microlearning. How did that come about? I had a client who simply couldn’t devote days or even hours to classroom learning. Microlearning allowed me to get people the information they needed in real time to do their work. When used correctly, videos, audio content, and simple job aids can be very effective. How do you judge the success of a program? Learning. By that, I mean the participants learned and so did I – genuine dialogue occurred. When that happens, the client is happy and so am I. Tell me a little about your design philosophy. I’ve seen a lot of training that includes information participants can’t figure out how to use. For me, it’s all about the practical. My purpose or intention is to create an experience people feel is relevant, useful, and again, practical – something they can start doing the minute they walk out the door, if not earlier. You do a lot of training and with senior executives, why do think that particular audience likes working with you? I’m not sure, but if I had to guess, I’d say it’s because I let them speak. I don’t need to be the person who shares all the answers. I’m comfortable with myself, and I don’t feel an urge to compete. You’ve been at this work for a long time. What “secrets” do you have for addressing the following two problems: Disengaged participants? I give people something to do, and I want to hear their opinion. What I’ve found over the years is people enjoy the opportunity to share their thought and ideas. Participants who lag behind the group? It’s critical to meet people where they are. When you think about it, they don’t show up with the same experience, so why would you expect them to all perform the same way? Chances are they won’t. I believe it’s essential to encourage and make it safe and fun for people to participate. You’ve been known to say that praise is an underused tool. Can you comment on how that belief impacts your work? Yes. Praise is free, it’s powerful, and it doesn’t have to be patronizing. It works as a management tool, and it works in the classroom. You’ve got to find what’s going right and replicate it. In my work as a leader, I know this to be true. In a training environment, it can mean the difference between buying in or checking out, fun or discomfort, and success or failure. What do you like best about your work? The thing I like to do the most is to help people discover or rediscover their best selves. In the various roles I’ve had in my career, I’ve encountered countless people who were beaten up and underappreciated. And after a while, they somehow forgot who they were. My job is to help them remember and to set their sights on something better. Now that can mean different things to different people. But how many people do you know who want to settle or choose to be mediocre on purpose? What do you not like? Rote work, routine, and sharing information or processes that don’t work. I do my best to choose projects that include none of those elements. How do you stay current with what’s happening in talent development? I tend to take inspiration from watching others facilitate. I observe what they do well and incorporate elements that work well that aren’t part of my usual approach. I also participate in several online groups and watch a few industries closely. When you’re not working, what are your interests? In addition to enjoying my family, I’m a student of American history and the political process. I also like seeing places I’ve never been to and discovering new people. - [Shanna Kabatznick](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/shanna-kabatznick/): Q. What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Results-focused, interactive, and collaborative. What are your favorite topics to facilitate? There are so many! I like everything. Seriously, nobody is as much as I’m always adding to my skillset, I’m not an expert in everything. I have deep professional experience in sales, negotiation, influence, and networking. I also have significant life experience when it comes to cross-cultural communication. Tell me a little more about that last part. I was born in Quito, Ecuador to a Jewish-American father and a Spanish-Catholic mother. After high school, my parents sent me to Mississippi State. Talk about culture shock! I am a walking billboard about the importance of learning how to navigate different environments, customs, norms, cultures, and so forth. I use those experiences when I’m helping people understand and navigate cultures, different generations, or gender differences in the workplace. You’ve had several entrepreneurial ventures in your career. How have those experiences influenced your approach to training and consulting? That’s a great question and one with an answer about which I’m passionate! I believe people with an entrepreneurial approach to work always look for new ways to complete tasks. That could mean improving processes, strengthening relationships with people, or delivering a stronger work product. I’m always seeking new ways to innovate and improve. When you’re facilitating training, how do you transfer your drive and motivation to others? I think the first step is creating an inclusive environment where people can engage and learn from each other. When they’re bought in and find new ways to do their work, most learners dig in. As a facilitator, I’m good at helping people make connections with people and with content. I believe doing both is important to get the most out of a training session. Over the course of your career, you’ve done a fair amount of training and keynote speaking targeted to women, tell me about that. I grew up in a patriarchal society, and I started my career in a field dominated by men. Through my early career experiences, I learned that my journey differed from that of my male colleagues. When I started my career, succeeding as a woman in finance required a lot of tenacity and savvy. I learned a lot through trial and error, and I wanted to share those lessons with women in similar situations. That’s the genesis of most of my female-targeted programming. That said, I like working with all sorts of groups. How do you adjust to different client groups? What’s important to the client is what’s important to me. That’s constant. What changes is where I put my focus. At the end of the day, what matters is achieving objectives.   When you aren’t working, what are your interests? In addition to spending time with my family, I love traveling and solving puzzles. New places energize me, and I find something satisfying about getting pictures to come together and uncovering answers. - [Charlie Long](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/charlie-long/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Relatable, adaptable, and interactive. You’ve spent a lot of time working with parochial schools. How does that work relate to your corporate projects?  While the nonprofit and for-profit worlds are different, the communication challenges most organizations face are fundamentally the same. Regardless of where they work, employees, boards, managers, and engineers need to share their ideas to make them actionable. Likewise, customers, clients, and stakeholders expect and deserve clear communications. How do you prepare for a workshop or keynote? My preparation begins with questions. Some clients know exactly what they want, and others present symptoms. I’ve worked with both situations. My job is to get to the root cause of whatever is going on and to develop a solution I can execute in the time allotted. What are your favorite topics to facilitate?   I enjoy anything connected to communication. While that includes written, verbal, and electronic exchanges, there is so much more! For example, listening is an underappreciated skill. Whether I’m helping people learn how to lead, manage, negotiate, or just get along better with each other, listening is the cornerstone of that work. How do you manage program participants with different levels of mastery? I believe everyone brings something to the table. I often have groups where some people with decades of experience sit next to participants with far less tenure. Both groups have a lot to contribute. From what I’ve observed, the novices often ask the best questions, while the seasoned veterans are better at seeing the big picture. I stress the importance of setting goals and working toward improvement in all my courses. That’s going to look different for each person. Once people adopt that mindset, most of the time my sessions become very collaborative. You’ve written two award-winning children’s books. How does that experience help you with your corporate work? My book work has a lot of parallels with what I do in the business world. First, writing children’s books is all about distilling an idea to its simplest core. Through writing for children, I’ve learned to be economical, exact, and direct with words. I find most business communication could benefit from the same strategy. Second, writing and publishing a book is an exercise in project management. Books, like projects, have deadlines, dependencies, contracts, specialists, marketing, vendors, staffing, budgets, etc. Finally, children’s books are great examples of the power of storytelling. My understanding of simple storytelling translates well to the corporate world. In business, people don’t have time for the great American novel. They want a story that gets to the point. How do you stay current with what’s happening in organizational development, coaching, and counseling? First, I learn a lot from my clients. Second, I pay close attention whenever a colleague or student recommends a book. I discover some of my favorite material this way. When you’re not working, what are your interests? I am always writing. Currently, I am finalizing two novels for publication and have a non-fiction work brewing in the background. I am also an avid musician and songwriter. I play several instruments and regularly perform with various ensembles. - [Mariana Marko](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/mariana-marko/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Engaging, relaxed, and outcome driven. What are your favorite topics to facilitate? I love a wide variety of topics – but the topics that are most interesting to me are considered “soft skills”. However, I do like to challenge that label. I prefer to call those skills “crucial skills” because they are essential to success. Even the smartest, most capable employees can struggle with productivity if they are not able to succeed with the “crucial skills” of emotional intelligence, communication, or conflict navigation. Equipping people in these areas is fun and exciting for me and can be life changing for them. How do you plan for a training session? I begin by understanding the needs and the desired outcomes for an engagement, and I also want to understand the potential barriers or obstacles. From there, I work to design an experience that is relevant, useful, and practical – and also interactive. I want to give participants an immediate “win” that they can apply to see quick results. What do you like best about your work? On this list is making a difference in the lives of others, encouraging change and growth, connecting with people, mobilizing teams, and seeing others live their strengths. I am passionate about educating and coaching people to be intentional – whether that’s realizing talents, strengthening weaknesses, or something else that will help them be the best them they can be. What would you do as a career if you weren’t in this field? Something with horticulture. When you think about it, there are a lot of crossovers. I like to see things grow, I will roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty, and I also understand that many factors influence a plant’s success. You need good dirt, a good location, an attentive gardener, and so forth. When you are not working, what are your interests? I love music of all genres – playing and singing. Also, my husband and I enjoy home renovation and building projects. But the list of things I enjoy is not complete unless I add a sparkly beverage, singing at the top of my lungs when I’m alone in the car, laughter with friends, and time with my family. - [Eric Molin](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/eric-molin/): Why do you do what you do? I love teaching. After spending ten years in corporate America, I realized my greatest satisfaction came from training and teaching. I was born overseas in Taipei, Taiwan, into a family of traveling teachers, so being on the road and teaching feels natural to me. What makes you uniquely qualified to teach your subjects? I’ve been a public speaker for 20 years and have spent 11 of those teaching the skill. I’ve trained over 4,000 people, written a book, and delivered a TEDx talk on public speaking. Having lived in five countries and conducted business in 15 others, I bring a global perspective to cross-cultural projects. Additionally, my decade of experience in sales gives me firsthand knowledge of the challenges sales teams face and how to help them succeed. How do you differentiate yourself from other training facilitators? Every trainer is unique, so direct comparisons can be tricky. What sets me apart is my focus on authenticity. I encourage participants to speak in their own voice rather than mimic mine. Many participants come to me after struggling with courses where they felt pressured to copy the trainer’s style. My goal is to help people find their voice and express themselves authentically. How do you tailor your approach to the needs of your clients? When a client requests a workshop, I start by asking, “Why?” This question helps me understand their background, challenges, and the issues their participants are facing. Their answers shape the content and structure of the workshop from the outset. Which types of projects do you turn down? I avoid projects where there is a clear misalignment between upper management’s expectations, middle management’s communication, and the actual needs of the participants. Without alignment, the training is unlikely to deliver meaningful results. When you’re not working, what are your interests? Despite spending more than 100 days a year traveling for work, I still love exploring new places in my free time. I have a passion for architecture, photography, and food—especially European variations of hamburgers. I also enjoy reading and staying active, having transitioned from foil fencing to hiking. Spending time with friends and family is important to me, though with loved ones spread across the globe, planning get-togethers often becomes a rewarding project in itself. - [Kathy Rineaman](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/kathy-rineaman/): After almost 20 years at Business Training Works, what’s your secret to keeping everything running smoothly? Patience, a good filing system, and knowing when to let go of perfection. I kept records of everything—sometimes even things I didn’t need—because you never know when a lunch order from 10 years ago might come in handy! And if all else fails, a kind smile and saying, “We’ll figure it out together” usually does the trick. What’s your reaction when you’re called out of retirement to help? I take a deep breath, remind myself they wouldn’t call if it wasn’t important, and say, “Of course, I’ll help!”—even if I was just about to settle in with a good book. Honestly, though, I’ve been through enough over the years that I can usually handle whatever comes up. That’s the benefit of having traveled the world and learned to adapt to all kinds of people and situations—it changes your perspective. How did you manage to stay so calm and steady through all those years? I always reminded myself that it was just one day out of 365. No matter how hectic things got, I knew it would pass, so there was no need to get caught up in the chaos. Even when others around me were losing their cool, I focused on staying balanced instead of feeding into the crazy. That mindset helped me navigate just about anything. You were known as a whiz with computers during your time at Business Training Works. What was your secret? Honestly, I just kept learning. Whether it was figuring out a new program, troubleshooting an issue, or creating systems that worked for everyone, I loved the challenge of making technology work for us instead of against us. These days, my eyesight might slow me down a bit, but back then, I could click circles around most people! If you could share one lesson from your years as office manager, what would it be? Always listen first. Sometimes people just need to feel heard, and when you give them that, the solution usually comes naturally. Oh, and document everything! I was known for overdocumenting, but it always paid off when someone needed to find a needle in a haystack from years ago. And don’t forget to keep extra pens—those always disappear! - [Pamela Sumner](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/pamela-sumner/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Enthusiastic, comfortable, and attentive. When you first started your career, you were doing very different work than you do now. How does that early experience influence how you approach clients? I started my career literally digging dirt. Often, I was in a hole looking up at people. It was humbling. That experience influenced my approach to people in general. If you go into any situation thinking you’re superior, eventually you will fail – at least I would. I think most people will tell you I’m open, easy to get along with, and down to earth. When you moved from the field to corporate, you found yourself responsible for training senior executives. How did you build credibility with that audience? I knew enough to know what I didn’t know. In the beginning, I brought in the best talent and development people I could find. I then sat in on their classes, so I could learn too. Over time, I grew and my responsibilities increased. By the time I left, I had a string of successful projects behind me and I’d earned the credibility I didn’t initially have. The company invested a lot of money in my development. For that vote of confidence, I’ll always be grateful. In what types of industries do you most enjoy working? I really can’t say I have a favorite. In my career. I’ve worked across sectors and I’ve learned there are more similarities than differences. People are people, and if I know something that can support them, it doesn’t matter where they hang their hats each day. You’re good with focus groups and getting people to talk. Why do you think that is? I’m a good listener. Some of that comes naturally. Some of it is learned. If you establish a safe environment, ask the right questions, and give people time to talk, they usually will. When working with adults, I find it’s important to honor their work and life experiences. For that reason, most of the time my work isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about helping people who already know a lot to generate ideas, consider different viewpoints, and seek solutions. You’ve done a lot of executive coaching for senior leaders. When is coaching an appropriate solution? For coaching to work, the timing needs to be right, the person must be emotionally ready, the desire to change must exist, and the willingness to commit the energy to doing the work has got to be there. When any of those four elements is missing, coaching may not be the right. In fact, it probably isn’t. Tell me a little bit about the process you follow to create engaging and meaningful content. It all comes back to meeting expectations. I’ve written a lot of content in my life. The good stuff all starts with well-thought-out objectives. Once those are in place and agreed to, I have client ownership.  Shared ownership is key. In your opinion, why does training fail? For a variety of reasons. I’ll talk about three. One of the biggest reasons training fails is training isn’t always the answer. If the problem is a performance management issue, training probably won’t fix it. Training also fails when there’s no incentive or support for people to change behavior. Finally, training can fail when people don’t find any personal or professional value in what’s being taught. An experienced facilitator can often work on the fly to “sell” content, but it’s a whole lot easier when a program fit is designed right from the beginning. What's your best training secret? I don’t know if it’s a secret, but you really have to know your topic cold. When you know your material like the back of your hand, it won’t matter which road you go down. You’re familiar with every twist and turn. In other words, to be spontaneous and flexible, you have to be knowledgeable and prepare. You can’t fake that stuff. When you’re not working, what are your interests? I’m enjoying my family, my farm, and my horses. I also am intrigued by what’s new and I rarely drive home the same way twice in a row. - [Phillip Tanzilo](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/phillip-tanzilo/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Deliberate, relevant, entertaining, and interactive. How do you design your programs? I take the trust clients have in me seriously. Typically, I begin by confirming a client’s needs and objectives. Once I understand those, I collaborate with the client to create relevant examples that shape my message, activities, and delivery. What’s your “secret” to good facilitation? You’ve got to care, and you’ve got to enjoy learning about different businesses and what makes them unique. For me, this work is a calling. If you’re not prepared, passionate, flexible, and resilient, you shouldn’t be doing it. How do you typically begin a training session? Participants need to see value in what I’m facilitating; otherwise, it’s a waste of their time. Early on, I work hard to make a connection with each person and get to their WIIFM (What’s in it for me?). I show how the program will help them perform better, achieve the results they want, and support organizational objectives. You’ve done a lot with culture change and employee engagement. What do you like about that work? Cultural transformation and employee engagement are central to the major projects I’ve worked on. Both are interconnected and critical to a business’s long-term success. My role is to be a trusted partner who makes that process easier. It’s different for every employee, and one size doesn’t fit all. I make it personal by understanding where people stand in supporting the shift and helping them see the value of a new future. How do you stay current with what’s happening in talent development? It’s important to me to stay on the cutting edge to best serve my clients. I’m still involved with ATD and previously served as chapter president for the International Society for Performance Improvement. Recently, I was invited to join a task force with the International Association for Continuing Education and Training to outline new global standards for education and workplace learning. What would you do professionally if you weren’t in learning and development? I was fortunate to discover my strengths early in my career. I know what I’m good at; not everyone can say that. If I weren’t in this field, I’d still be in a role where I could influence people to achieve their goals, continue learning and growing, and make a difference in how people work together. When you’re not working, what are your interests? I enjoy socializing with friends, learning, outdoor activities, going to the theater, and spending time with my dog. - [Ron Tsang](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/ron-tsang/) - [Eduardo Villavicencio](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/eduardo-villavicencio/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Interactive, inclusive, and innovative. How has your work in IT helped you on the soft-skills side? It taught me the importance of translation and what can get lost in the process. That’s always top of mind for me. Even when people are speaking the same language, they’re not always hearing the same thing. What does good training design mean to you? That’s easy. Good training means everyone walked away with some value from their time investment and felt a sense of ownership in taking new actions for enhanced performance. How do you prepare for a client? I ask a lot of questions, listen actively, and synthesize what’s said. Once I understand the real objectives behind a need, I’m able to design a solution. Are you creative? I’m creative at making connections. What I learn in one part of my life may have endless application in another area that on the surface seems unrelated. I think that ability helps me help participants connect classroom content to their lives back on the job or, for that matter, at home. This also helps me in customizing my training workshops to balance activities that inspire both critical and creative thinking. You have a lot of experience in change management. What makes that work exciting to you? As a former K-12 educator, I came to realize that most people don’t really resist change itself. Instead, they reject the notion that they must be changed. This occurs as there’s something wrong with them. I enjoy creating workshops that offer individuals self-awareness and appreciation for what they bring to the table while also providing a “brave space” for acknowledging areas of improvement in their performance. It helps when people feel like they don’t have to let go of what they have (knowledge, skills, habits) in order to realize the value of something new. I know you’re a big believer in the value of listening, and it’s the cornerstone of a lot of your work. What are some of the listening roadblocks you see participants overcome during their time with you? In short, the biggest listening roadblock is the phrase, “I already know that.” Studies in neuroscience suggest that people only learn something new by connecting it or comparing it to some previous knowledge. However, this filtered approach to listening can prevent someone from fully appreciating the value of learning. Instead, I ask participants to actively engage in a class by being curious – asking themselves, “I wonder what I don’t know about this yet?” You spend a lot of time making sure people see value in investing time with you. How do you show them that value? At the beginning of every workshop, I ask participants to voice out loud what value they would like to take away from the session and “why” it would be impactful for them. Once they share that with a partner (or whole group), it’s important for them to write it down. Then throughout the day, when we return from the breaks, I ask them to look at that “declaration statement” and reflect if any of their perception in that area has shifted. By the end of the workshop, participants usually tell me they received more value than they expected. You can facilitate training in both English and Spanish. How has being able to communicate in two languages helped you in the classroom? As a bilingual person, I live my life balancing viewpoints and perspectives based on minor nuances in language. This practice helps me understand that each of the participants in my classroom may come from different cultures, regions, and linguistic backgrounds. So, I often repeat important concepts in varying formats as well as ask participants to restate a question their peers may have asked in their own words before responding. I enjoy hearing comments such as, “I didn’t realize that!” It’s very rewarding. Outside of work, what are your interests? When I’m not in a facilitating or speaking role, I enjoy traveling and dancing. I find that traveling helps practice some mental flexibility as I’m forced to reckon with a variety of people’s traditions, habits, and expectations. These experiences keep me on my toes. Additionally, partner dancing (e.g., salsa, merengue, swing, and tango) helps with my physical flexibility while also being lots of fun! - [Kate Zabriskie](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team/kate-zabriskie/): What three or four words describe your facilitation style? Interactive, fast paced, and responsive. Do you tend to follow “the book” or work “off the cuff?” A little of both. I have a plan for every session, and that plan evolves throughout the day as I interact with people and learn about a group, its needs, and the participants’ mastery of various topics. While it doesn’t happen often, I’ve been known to abandon a training plan and create something in real time if I realize the initial agenda isn’t going to get the group where it is supposed to go. If you want a facilitator who will adhere to a strict minute-by-minute timetable or someone who does eight shows a week the same way each time, I’m not a good fit for your project, and the work is better suited for another member of our team. How do you handle disengaged participants? I strongly believe participants should be put in the driver’s seat immediately. They’re adults and should have a say in how our time together looks. Usually, that approach is enough to persuade even the “voluntold” to give me and the program a chance. During the sessions I facilitate, it is unusual for people to multitask or check out. If I observe those behaviors, I adjust the program. What are your favorite topics to facilitate? Something participants see value in learning. Whether it’s creativity, coaching, conquering a formal table setting, or some other soft skill, I certainly know my stuff. However, that doesn’t really matter if the people I’m working with don’t think they will benefit from learning the topic. How do you tailor your approach to meet the needs of a client? I like to understand what a client wants to achieve. In other words, what’s supposed to be different after I leave? Once I know the practical goal or goals, I can craft a training plan that focuses on developing the skills needed to reach the objective. Where do you find the inspiration for your programs and activities? I’ve written hundreds of training programs since I started in this business. At that volume, it doesn’t take long to exhaust the obvious. Luckily, ideas find me everywhere. Some of my best work has come from places you wouldn’t expect: children’s stories, song lyrics, museum exhibits, dollar stores, the street of Anytown, USA, and so forth. I’m always asking myself, “how can I use this?” Or better still, “if I had to use this, how would I incorporate it?” I enjoy the unexpected and figuring out how to adapt it to my work. What types of projects do you turn down? Anything that I don’t do well, opportunities where I know what I can do won’t help solve the problem, and projects that will consume a disproportionate amount of time or are peripheral to our core business. That last part might seem a little harsh, but I mean it. Time is one of my most valuable resources, and I need to be strategic about how I spend it. When I’m working with a client, I’m one hundred percent present. I need the hours available in order to do that. So, if something isn’t a good fit, it doesn’t make sense to push rocks uphill. The people who’ve worked with us for years and rely on us deserve better. How do you stay current with what’s happening in talent development? I’m always learning from my clients, and I read, and then I read some more. I also maintain a large network of contacts who are always willing to share information or weigh in with an opinion or idea. When you’re not working, what are your interests? I’m active in my community, and I have a passion for historic preservation, a strong interest in material culture, and a love of recreational travel. ## Team Building Training - [Total Team-Building Training Workshop](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team-building/total-team-building-training-workshop/): This business team-building workshop will: - [Team Purpose Training Workshop](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team-building/team-purpose-training-workshop/): This team strategy course will: - [The Functional Team Training Workshop](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team-building/the-functional-team-training-workshop/): This one-day team-building workshop will: - [Team Roles Training Workshop](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team-building/team-roles-training-workshop/): This team roles workshop will: - [Team-Building Workshop for Merging Teams](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team-building/team-building-workshop-for-merging-teams/): This full-day workshop for combined teams will: - [Team Focus Training Workshop](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team-building/team-focus-training-workshop/): This one-day team-building workshop will: - [Collaboration Skills Training Workshop](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team-building/collaboration-skills-training-workshop/): This page redirects to the full outline in the communication skills directory. - [Team-Building Training Workshop for Matrix Teams](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team-building/team-building-training-workshop-for-matrix-teams/): This matrix teams training workshop will: - [Cross-Cultural Team-Building Training Workshop](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team-building/cross-cultural-team-building-training-workshop/): This cross-cultural team-building program will: - [Storytelling Team-Building Training Workshop](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team-building/storytelling-team-building-training-workshop/): This storytelling workshop for teams will: - [Team Building with Food Training Workshop](https://www.businesstrainingworks.com/team-building/team-building-with-food-training-workshop/): "Culinary Capers: Team Building with Food" is a half-day onsite workshop that uses food as the thread connecting six activities, each designed to reveal something different about how a team operates.
