However, every player above him on that list came after him: Gerald Wilkins, Trent Tucker, John Starks, Mark Jackson, Charlie Ward, Ray Williams, Michael Ray Richardson, Charles Oakley and, at number one, Patrick Ewing.

They did not go for Larry Bird, who was drafted later. Instead, one of the most prestigious franchises in the NBA decided that they would choose Michael Ray Richardson as their new superstar, touted to be the next Walt Frazier.
- [When did the NBA introduce the salary cap? The story behind the decision that changed basketball forever](https://basketballnoise.com/when-did-the-nba-introduce-the-salary-cap-the-story-behind-the-decision-that-changed-basketball-forever/): In the 1984-85 season the NBA introduced a salary cap. This was not the first time the NBA had originally introduced a salary cap. It was there for one season when the NBA started. However, it was soon scrapped. This was the first salary cap since that point. It was set at $3.6 million dollars per team, and that meant that every NBA franchise had to work out a way to fit their roster onto that payroll. Furthermore, this was the first hard salary cap in US professional sports history.
- [The NBA Reserve Clause: The 1958 Battle That Started Everything](https://basketballnoise.com/the-nba-reserve-clause-the-1958-battle-that-started-everything/): The NBA realised it had a problem with its players in 1958.
- [How NBA Players Won Their Freedom: The Fights That Changed Professional Basketball Forever](https://basketballnoise.com/how-nba-players-won-their-freedom-the-fights-that-changed-professional-basketball-forever/): Every multi-million dollar NBA contract signed today, as players flit between teams with no restrictions and free negotiation, owes a debt of gratitude to the NBA players who paved the way. Sixty years ago this was not even a luxury for the best players in the league. The NBA players of yesterday had to threaten to boycott games, go to courtrooms and even the Senate to get the basic contract freedom they deserved. Today's fans and players have not heard the acts of courage that NBA players had to take to get this freedom.
- [The Night NBA Players Locked Themselves In A Dressing Room And Changed Everything](https://basketballnoise.com/the-night-nba-players-locked-themselves-in-a-dressing-room-and-changed-everything/): The 14th NBA All-Star Game was scheduled to tip off at 9pm Eastern Time on the 14th of January 1964. Boston Garden was full. A national television audience was waiting. There was just one problem. The players were locked in a dressing room 50 feet from the court and they were refusing to come out.
- [Nike NBA Therma Flex Hoodie – How to Find One on Vinted for Under £30](https://basketballnoise.com/nike-nba-therma-flex-hoodie-how-to-find-one-on-vinted-for-under-30/): I have spotted some absolute bargains on Vinted, Nike Therma Flex hoodies. Now, you might not know what these are, but they're seen on almost every NBA player during warm-ups and training sessions. When an NBA player is warming up, they wear these jackets with their team logo. These jackets were designed because in the past, when teams were warming up, players would wear shooting shirts, t-shirts or hoodies and there was no uniformity. So a few years ago, Nike made these Therma Flex jackets.
- [The First Million Dollar Man: How Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Changed Basketball Forever](https://basketballnoise.com/the-first-million-dollar-man-how-kareem-abdul-jabbar-changed-basketball-forever/): The stat that changed basketball forever was not points. - [Why did Spencer Haywood sue the NBA? The story nobody tells](https://basketballnoise.com/why-did-spencer-haywood-sue-the-nba-the-story-nobody-tells/): Spencer Haywood was an NBA All-Star, and that's the way most people remember him. He was selected five times as an All-Star, and in 1980, he became an NBA champion with the Lakers. But what people don't know is that if it wasn't for Spencer Haywood, LeBron James never enters the NBA at 18. Kobe Bryant would not have left high school, and Kevin Garnett may have never made the leap to the league. Any young player who came into the league before completing four years of college owes Spencer Haywood a debt they probably didn't even know exists. This is the story of how a kid from a Mississippi cotton field changed professional basketball forever.
- [Oscar Robertson Took On The NBA. Every Player Today Owes Him.](https://basketballnoise.com/oscar-robertson-took-on-the-nba-every-player-today-owes-him/): Oscar Robertson's name has come up recently, when Russell Westbrook passed Robertson's record of averaging a triple double for an entire season. - [Every NBA Finals MVP Got A Car. Here’s What Happened Next](https://basketballnoise.com/every-nba-finals-mvp-got-a-car-heres-what-happened-next/): There has been a tradition of the NBA Finals which has long been forgotten. The Finals MVP used to have a tradition whereby the MVP didn't just receive a trophy but a car too. Sport Magazine had the tradition and did this from 1969 for the NBA until it folded in 2000. There would be a lunch after the Finals and the MVP would get the keys. We have looked into the newspaper archives and found all the details over a 30 year run, from cars being the wrong colour to cars being refused.
- [How Five College Kids Started a Fashion Revolution That the NBA Spent Years Trying to Stop](https://basketballnoise.com/how-five-college-kids-started-a-fashion-revolution-that-the-nba-spent-years-trying-to-stop/): In the history of the NBA, the item that has changed the most is what players wear. Originally in the 1940s and 50s it was bland, earth-like coloured jerseys. This moved on to designer colours, stripes and lightweight materials. But perhaps the biggest and most dramatic change, as controversial and as culturally significant as anything in the sport, is what happened to the basketball shorts.
- [The Man who Screamed at Referees went home and Painted Landscapes](https://basketballnoise.com/the-man-who-screamed-at-referees-went-home-and-painted-landscapes/): There is a photograph of Tom Heinsohn (Tommy) that most Celtics fans will know very well. It's the one where he's standing courtside in a suit, screaming at an official. However, there's another photograph of Tommy Heinsohn that Celtics fans would have never seen. It's a photograph of a man standing quietly in front of a canvas, brush in hand, lost in thought.

- [Everyone Knows About Jordan’s Stolen Jersey in 1990… But there was another one stolen](https://basketballnoise.com/everyone-knows-about-jordans-stolen-jersey-in-1990-but-there-was-another-one-stolen/): Every NBA fan knows the story of Michael Jordans Jersey going missing on Valentine's Day in 1990, when he suited up against the Magic that night Jordan had to wear the number 12. He was one of the hottest talents in the NBA draft already having won an NCAA championship twice and an Olympic medal. The Royals decision to not pick Russell changed the Celtics franchise forever. The NBA draft took place in New York City on 30th April 1956 and the result of the draft changed the way that teams evaluated talent and managed draft picks and rosters forever.
- [George Mikan’s Statue: Honouring the First Giant of the NBA](https://basketballnoise.com/george-mikans-statue-honouring-the-first-giant-of-the-nba/): As many of you will know, the Los Angeles Lakers originally came from Minneapolis and one of their All-Star performers of that team was George Mikan. In April 2001, Minneapolis gave its original superstar a statue to immortalize his dominance in the NBA. It was a 9 ft tall statue in bronze which was installed in the target centre lobby and many people saw this as a long overdue. Thank you to George Mikan for the contribution he made to Minneapolis and the NBA as a whole. You only need to see Mikans stats on Basketball Reference to see his impact.
- [George Mikan’s Breaking Point: Pressure, Travel, and a League on His Shoulders](https://basketballnoise.com/george-mikans-breaking-point-pressure-and-endorsements/): At the start of the NBA there was no player more dominant than George Mikan. His achievements speak for themselves Five Time NBA Champion, two time NBL Champion and four time NBA All Star (see his amazing stats at Basketball-Reference.com). He was so dominant that the NBA had to widen the key and the media called him Mr Basketball due to his ability. It could be argued that he had the weight of the league on his shoulders, as most crowds were drawn to the games because of Mikan playing. Sports journalists listed Mikan as the greatest basketball player of all time. However, the burden of being the greatest player of all time pushed Mikan to the edge of his physical and emotional limits.
